Holy Cross/BC is interesting. Good rivalry from days gone by. I really didn't need BC losing last week though.

EWU/Fresno good be fun. I'll be seeing if I get enough points to back UC-Davis.

Instead of punting the football, the Trojans elected to try to run out of the clock as Bailey was stopped short of the first down marker with 1 second left, turning the ball back over to the Spartans with an opportunity to potentially tie the game.

But just when it appeared the game was headed to overtime, the snap of the field goal attempt was high as Dante Clark picked up the loose ball and sprinted 77 yards into the end zone as time expired.

Northeast Conference

Opening week of the 2023 football campaign saw Northeast Conference (NEC) teams go 2-6 against non-conference opponents. Saint Francis U and LIU put up fights against a pair of FBC opponents in Western Michigan and Ohio University, while Merrimack hung around with Holy Cross — the fifth-ranked team in the FCS — for nearly three quarters on Saturday. Stonehill also opened its season against a nationally-ranked opponent when it hosted #11 New Hampshire. Duquesne and Central Connecticut were victorious on Saturday, posting commanding 40-plus-point victories over Edinboro and AIC, respectively.

Western Michigan 35, SAINT FRANCIS U 17
Junior running back QuaSean Holmes made a 21-10 halftime deficit a one-score game for Saint Francis U (0-1, 0-0 NEC) with a five-yard touchdown run in the opening minutes of the second half, but Western Michigan ended the game with a 14-0 run to seal a 35-17 victory on Thursday in Kalamazoo, MI. Redshirt junior wide receiver Dawson Snyder registered a pair of catches, including a 77-yard touchdown from reigning NEC Offensive Player of the Year Cole Doyle, to pace the Red Flash offense with 87 yards.

DUQUESNE 49, Edinboro 7
Fueled by a pair of interceptions — including an Ayden Garnes pick six on Edinboro’s opening drive — and two fumble recoveries in the first quarter, Duquesne (1-0, 0-0 NEC) took an early 21-0 advantage and never looked back in its season opener at Rooney Field. Six different players reached the endzone for the Dukes, who produced three times as many rushing yards than the Fighting Scots in the 42-point triumph.

Ohio University 27, LIU 10
LIU (0-1, 0-0 NEC)
struggled to get the offense going in its season debut on Saturday, as the Sharks suffered a 27-10 defeat at FBC member Ohio University. Senior Davon Wells scored the Sharks’ lone touchdown of the afternoon in the final quarter after he hauled in a 15-yard pass from sophomore quarterback Luca Stanzani.

#11 New Hampshire 51, STONEHILL 17
Stifled by a potent New Hampshire offense, Stonehill (0-1, 0-0 NEC) opened the season with a 51-17 defeat to the 11th-ranked team in the nation inside W.B. Mason Stadium on Saturday. Accounting for more than half of the Skyhawks’ 125 yards on the ground, senior Jermaine Corbett scored each of his team’s two touchdowns on a two-yard rush in the second quarter and a 23-yard run in the final stanza.

#5 Holy Cross 42, MERRIMACK 20
Merrimack (0-1, 0-0 NEC)
fought tooth-and-nail and trailed by one with 3:51 to go in the third quarter, but four-time Patriot League champion Holy Cross used three unanswered touchdowns to pull away and score a 42-20 win in Worcester, MA on Saturday. Combining for 136 rushing yards, junior running back Tyvon Edmonds Jr. and sophomore quarterback Gavin McCusker each reached the endzone to lead the Warriors.

CCSU 44, AIC 0 – QB debut as starter, WR
Behind an impressive debut by junior C.J. Duell that saw the quarterback complete 17-of-25 pass while throwing for 235 yards and two touchdowns, Central Connecticut (1-0, 0-0 NEC) opened the Adam Lechtenberg Era with a 44-0 ousting of AIC at Arute Field on Saturday. Sophomore Malachi Wright registered eight tackles — including two tackles-for-loss — to spearhead a defensive effort that conceded just 158 yards, while junior quarterback junior wide receiver Davion Johnson tallied 103 receiving yards on six catches for 156 all-purpose yards in his first game as a Blue Devil.

Lafayette 19, SACRED HEART 14
Clawing back from a 13-point deficit to take a 14-13 lead, Sacred Heart (0-1, 0-0 NEC) went on to drop a 19-15 decision to visiting Lafayette on Saturday. The Pioneers drove to the Leopards’ five-yard line on their final possession but were unable to convert with 1:40 remaining in the game.

Fordham 46, WAGNER 16
Registering three touchdowns in the first half, Fordham tacked on three more in the second to score a 46-16 win over Wagner (0-1, 0-0 NEC) at Jack Coffey Field on Saturday. Steven Krajewski recorded 334 yards with a pair of touchdowns to Rickey Spruil (17 yards) and Trevor Shorter (18 yards) in his debut as the Seahawks’ signal caller.

But Stetson could not build more than a one possession lead and saw that small deficit evaporate when St. Thomas scored a touchdown with 8:47 remaining to tie the game 20-20. The Hatters and Bobcats scored touchdowns on their final possessions to force overtime. St. Thomas scored on its possession but saw its PAT miss leaving the door open for Stetson, which converted on its possession. Thank you. I wasn't sure if it makes the thread too busy? But I like having the results and some information listed within and copy and paste from conference sites seemed pretty easy
Gonna save me alot of time. That's for sure.

A few maybe misleading finals.

Sac State and Nicholls was just 24-10 entering the 4th Q. Finished 38-24

William & Mary led 34-17 before Campbell backdoored (depending on the line) with a TD in the final minute to lose by 10.

Weber State only had 306 yards but 35 pts vs Dll Central Washington

Abiline led 31-3 after 3 Q then packed it in pretty much, 31-11 Final vs Northern Colorado.

Idaho led 42-3 but only won 42-17 at Lamar.

Georgetown put the game over all totals on a pick-six in the final minute of the game

VMI had 22-8 FD and 412-184 TY edges vs Davidson. Led just 6-0 HT and won just 12-7. They only scored once on 3 RZ trips, missed an xpt, missed a 2pt conv, missed a FG and were 0-2 on 4th down.

North Dakota righfully waxed Drake, however Drake did have 332 yards (4.7) yet only scored 8 points

Lafayette at Sacred Heart was one of the better games from Saturday. Both teams had their moments. Sacred Heart hurt themselves missing 2 FGs and only scored on 2 of 5 RZ trips including a short INT thrown into the EZ with 1:40 left to lose by 5.

Southern Illinois completely dominated Austin Peay early. AP didn't get a FD until 25 minutes into the game. Appears some of the pieces missing from AP's team (only returned 1 of top 5 Rec and 5 best players from D front 7 were gone along with 4 of top 6 DBs). It was 42-3 before AP scored. 49-23 Final.

Central Arkansas held their own at Ok State. They had two TDs called back by penalty on their first possession then missed a short FG. It was only 10-0 when UCA fumbled handing OSU a FG for 13-0 game. UCA would also miss a FG, but eventually capped a 95y drive for TD to make it 13-7 entering the 4th Q. Back-to-back OSU TDs and the final was 27-13. OSU only outrushed them by 26 yards and only outgained them overall by 62 yards.

UTEP did outgain UIW 423-308 and shut them out in the 2H. UIW scored just 1 TD on 3 RZ trips and converted just 5-of-14 3rd downs (they were 2-of-3 4th down).

Western Illinois scored right before the half on a draw play that NMSU was unprepared for and unwilling to tackle for. A 20-14 game at HT turned into a 58-21 Final as NMSU outgained them 650-251 in the end (10.2-4.3 ypp) and racked up 11 TFLs in the process. NMSU could've been more efficient themselves only scoring TDs on 4 of 6 RZ trips.

As far as I can tell there upsets from the week were:

Eastern Illinois winning at Indiana State, line closed as a DD dog

A near upset would've been Dll West Virginia State only lost by 2 at Morehead. Maybe WV State is better team really. They outgained Morehead and had a better 7.4-5.5 ypp.

Then Saturday Lafayette won at Sacred Heart as a small +220 dog while Morgan St shocked Richmond which would've been +1275 if you could've gotten it and North Alabama beat Chattanooga which was about +745

The MEAC and SWAC suffered some losses to Dll schools. Bowie beat Delaware St, Virginia St beat Norfolk, Central St beat Mississippi Valley St. Alabama St won as a small home dog over Southern.

Also a monster matchup #3 Montana St at #1 Sdsu.

When I'm in charge of things or a network I've having a Friday night FCS game of the week. Sucks these games get buried.

I can not understand how that game is not valuable to have on one of the actual ESPN channels. That is a night game, but could also be a mid afternoon game if they wanted it to be. ESPN U is giving us McNeese at Florida or UCF at Boise on ESPN2. If they moved it to afternoon they could put it on ESPNU instead of Marshall at ECU.

On one hand it is nice to have so many of the FCS games on one streaming platform with ESPN+. But at the same time, kind of like you say, I feel like they are trapped there because ESPN does no promotion for them and virtually no exposure.

FCS went 0-42 straight up vs FBS last week. I was off on some of my picks there. There are some realistic potential FCS vs FBS wins this week:

Holy Cross at Boston College
New Hampshire at Central Michigan
Eastern Illinois at Bowling Green
Southern Illinois at Norther Illinois
Morgan State at Akron (based off of what Morgan's defense just did, I wouldn't have thought this was a potential before last week)
Florida A&M at USF (FAMU could be hungover from Jackson State win)
Idaho at Nevada
Furman at South Carolina (would be a pretty big one and probably unlikely)
Idaho State at Utah State (Idaho State played improved at San Diego St)
UC Davis at Oregon State (has some potential, but I don't think I'd play it)
Eastern Washington at Fresno
Albany at Hawaii (Albany has played great in two games this year as a tough dog, or should I say tough Dane)

Looking at Idaho. Nevada on a long losing skid.

I was wondering if Idaho might get favored in that one? Or move there. UNR was a very small home fav last year vs Incarnate Word and UIW whipped the floor with them. This Idaho offense is very good, some think they have best WR duo or maybe the best singular WR in FCS (Hayden Hatten). QB was Jerry Rice Award winner last year.

I left Fordham at Buffalo off the list. I've watched Fordham the last two weeks and they are still fairly good, but they also have some deficiencies. Buffalo lost at home to Holy Cross last year on a game ending hailmary. No way Buffalo takes any FCS team lightly now and that HC team had to win on the last play of the game and this Fordham team is not as good as that HC team. There were times last week I wondered if Fordham was going to cover vs a bad Wagner team. I don't think Montes or their OL will have what it takes to get the win.

I was hoping I could get a FG, but I'm guessing it's probably a pickem

FCS action ill be looking at this week (7-1 in FCS YTD)
Holy Cross - man o man I checked this game earlier in the summer, never thought BC would be coming off a SU loss, likely all ATS value gone, was hoping for +20, now will likely be +10

Delaware State- Army...great spot to back the black cadets in this one...and after a loss at crappy ULM we should have a favorable spread (-28ish) could see army getting a Feel good win in this spot

CMU- New Hampshire, UNH doesnt care about games against FBS foes and always gets blown out...maybe we catch the oddsman asleep at the wheel and can grab a CMU -16 type bet?

BG/EIU? what in the world. BG looked pretty horrific and turned the ball over alot, EIU pretty impressive indeed in their shutout win against the syc's BG has a history of letting these weaker FCS teams hang around and then getting caught withtheir girdle down at the end...

Navy/Wagner...navy rolls here, wagner is butt cheeks and with the week 1 bye week for navy i have to assume they have their offensive woes figureed out.

Idaho/Nevada...going to be a great game...could we possibly get a crack at the vandals as a dog? if so...I...D...A..H...O...Idaho idaho go go go!!

FAMU- south florida looked pretty decent against WKU for the 1st three quarters. kinda fell apart. would be a great spot to catch the rattlers and +30...I bet we see +18, not as apatizing.

ULM- Lamar...lay it with the warhawks in my opinion

UCD- can we possibly get enough points to make this one interesting? UCD can bring it...

Albany/Hawaii...can we get the danes at +21 and peep the first half under also. hawaii back to form of stinking it up against tree, bad peformance and they were really never in it...ugh that was rough. my 10 points of CLV gone in 20 minutes of game action. albany slower paced this year. and hawaii pace is also slower, and the are huddling almost all the 1st half bfore going uptempo 2nd half.

FCS vs FCS foes: would look Univ. of south dakota hosting St. Thomas (non schol. pioneer league fade)

montana state + south dakota state should be a thriller!!

mercer after two butt cheecks pefrformances PERFECT time to get right against morehead state (pioneer league fade)

gardnew webb/elon...sneaky good FCS game.

Maine, long travel to miami and now on the bus to Fargo...eeesh good luck with that.

Might take a shot with North alabama. they have been very impressive to say the least.

Albany coach is in complete vacay mode this week

Can't imagine Albany treating this like business, once in a lifetime thing for most of those guys

FCS vs FCS foes: would look Univ. of south dakota hosting St. Thomas (non schol. pioneer league fade)

That is an interesting game. These two schools played the first ever game in the South Dakota dome. Seems like St Thomas likes to bully the Pioneer teams and doesn't do well out of conference (lost big at Southern Utah last year and UNI two years ago). I'm curious to see a little of this one. I have a feeling that the St Thomas coaches are not at all happy with how their game ended up allowing Black Hills to score a bunch and kind of keep it a one score game throughout the 2H. St Thomas had some short fields and a pick-six, but Black Hills actually outgained them 366-334 despite BH only being 1-of-9 on 3rd down, so they had a lot of success on 1st and 2nd down for those yards. I like the game, kind of a prove we belong in Dl game for St Thomas. And for South Dakota, who everyone thinks is a bottom tier MVFC team, they could actually play their way into the middle of the pack as they don't look that bad on paper.

Maine, long travel to miami and now on the bus to Fargo...eeesh good luck with that.

Yes I would like NDSU as well. Will want to jump on the opener of course. That close game at FIU I believe says more about the kind of team FIU has (not good) instead of the kind of team Maine has, or might have. I wasn't thinking they would be that good or compete that closely with FIU. I like that NDSU is playing the other QB now too. It might actually be good for Miller as well, to push him. Everyone compliments how he has fended off all challengers through the years to his starting spot, so competition for his job seems to bring the best out in him. And the other QB when he plays, atleast as a runner appears very talented and I'm sure he is as good of a passer based off the recruiting hype.

yeah mercer will be a play if they are less than -28. if they dont score 55+ something is waaaay wrong there.

10-2 on these YTD.

Have a bunch on my list but a couple based on situations include Akron as the Morgan state win last week will help the line a bit and Army, similar spot in reverse with their loss at ULM.

Wish lines came out earlier but I will have my “go list” done by tomorrow. Great stuff guys!

You guys are too disciplined, I had over 100 bets on FCS games last week! I love the action as much as I love the preparation and watching and winning. It's all part of the fun!

Like last week, I'm going to do a run down on games that interest me on one level or another and start figuring out what my targeted teams are or what else I need to figure out along the way.

Some early games:

I don't see myself taking anything until Saturday

Holy Cross at BC obviously is going to be a good one you'd think, the regionality of it. Holy Cross will be confident. BC might be desperate. HC RB and their 5th year stud LB Dobbs who missed 9 games last year returned to action last week and recorded 20 tackles were both named Patriot Leauge Players of the Week! HC was a 19 pt dog at South Dakota State in the playoffs last year so even though some power ratings might suggest this line could be between 16-20 I think it will be below 2 TDs. Merrimack did move it on HC in the 1H at least and their running QB gave them some trouble, looks like BC has a running QB as well in the Castellanos kid, but I would think Holy Cross would be more vulnerable if facing a strong passing team, which BC no longer is. I don't know if I play this game unless the line comes out higher than expected.

Agree with Duck on the Army play. Delaware St is bad and just lost to Bowie, which I guess I hear Bowie is a good Dll team who routinely make the playoffs and win DD games a year, although they were down last season. But still, Delaware St was held below 200 yards of offense and just 2-of-15 on 3rd down! This line will surely be in the 40s and when the line gets that high certain things need to go right. I'm game if it comes out 41 or less.

Sacred Heart and Georgetown should be a good NEC vs Patriot game. Georgetown looked to be rebuilding on offense this year, but simply exploded last week and their D which is fully stocked did their part in holding Marist to just 7 pts and 200 total yards. Sacred Heart made a lot of mistakes in their home loss to Lafayette which actually was their first home opener loss in atleast 12 years. I don't think there is a betting edge here and the line could be close to even.

Butler plays a Dll school this week, but I am going to keep an eye on them the next two weeks. Their next betable game is 9/23. Butler played pretty well at Montana all things considered and they have a QB who plays pretty well.

Duck's comment about New Hampshire not caring about FBS games would seem to be the case, as they historically do not play well in those games. Central Michigan is in a Mich State / Notre Dame sandwich while UNH has their rivalry game, the Granite Bowl, with Dartmouth on deck. This line probably won't be that high, maybe 10-14?

Eastern Illinois was ok last week, I think they appeared better actually because Indiana State was so bad. They do have an upgrade at QB this year and I'd figure they are improved overall. BGSU will be something like what, a 14-20 pt favorite? I didn't look at anything from BG;s game last week to really have a feel for them.

The Saint Thomas (MN) game at South Dakota is going to be one to watch. St Thomas has been so strong jumping from Dlll to FCS although they benefit from playing in the Pioneer. I see they have to replace their 2 year starting QB, that could be a negative for them on the road here vs South Dakota who isn't a winning team in the MVFC, but should be just above the bottom teams and at the edge of the mid-pack teams. Line in the high teens to low 20s? I am somewhat reluctant to fade the Tommies though unless the line comes out quite a bit lower.

Samford got the Michael Hiers for the Payton Award campaign kicked off with 375y and 5 TD passes vs Shorter. A few people I have heard say look out for this Western Carolina team to suprise and they are high on Kerwin Bell as coach who's in year 3. They just need their D to catch up to the O, which 22 was better than 21 and it looks to take another step this year. The matchup vs Samford has not been kind to the Catamounts however, with only one cover in their last 5. Hard to really gauge them much off the Arkansas loss right? They started Gonzales at QB, which I think is good because I never liked Dean at Harvard. He came in the game and threw 3 INTs (one of them a pick-six). Dean led them to their first points on a FG drive while Gonzales came back in and led them on a TD drive. KJ Jefferson went 18-23-246-3-0. Playing Michael Hiers is going to be a challenge, he was 24-of-30 vs them last year. I could be inclined to having something on the home dog here even though the number could be surpisingly low. Last year at Samford it was 6. Samford won 35-12, but W Car outgained them by 63 yards. Samford was actually outgained in 4 SoCon games they won last year and their D might slip a little.

Campbell beat Citadel pretty good to open last season at home as a 9.5 pt fav. Updated Massey and Sagarin PR both imply this is going to be a low line, like 3 or less for Campbell on the road? I'd be surprised. Leading returning WR Jalen Kelsey appeared to have an injured leg last week, without him Campbell would be down their top 3 from last year - and if there is something that The Citadel is better at it is D. Campbell's secondary is rebuilding, but that should not be a problem vs The Citadel even though they are tweaking their option to more of a spread, they only attempted 8 passes last week and only completed 2 of them. Did anyone catch the comments by new Citadel HC after the season opener? “The truth is we’re a poor football team at the moment,” Drayton said. “We’re not playing very well and we’re not very happy with our progress right now. That’s the truth, that’s how I feel. We have some work to do before Saturday.” Well Saturday they lost 0-34 while going 3-and-out 6x only gaining 212 total yards. The Citadel did pull two upsets last year (ETSU as 15 pt dog in week 2 who ended up being a bad team - and Western Carolina as 11.5 dog). Surely Campbell can beat The Citadel and cover a potentially low number? If not, Mike Minter might actually not be the guy for this job.

That takes the schedule on some of the games of interest up to 3:00, I'll revisit some more later.

Here’s my “short” list…These are under consideration if the lines I can get are close to what 5D is showing this afternoon. With the understanding that some of those will be long gone by the time BOL and BM release, but still a solid reference point nonetheless.

URI
Army
Navy
Tenn
TCU
ULM
CCSU
Nova
ACU
NCCU
Montana

Thanks for the reminder on the 5dimes lines via maddux lines. They had not been listing them before now

You have to look for errors. I noticed last year when I was following Ivy League numbers early in the week there that sometimes they would list the favorite line next to the wrong team and there are a couple this week in error too. They have Northern Colorado as -18.5 vs Abilene. Abilene will be favored by something close to 18.5 presumably. And I assume the same for Campbell and The Citadel, they show Citadel -4, which would be listed in error, instead Campbell would be -4. So you have to wonder if any of their other small lines could be listed wrong as well.

I'm going to look these over.

They have YSU -41.5 vs YSU which is within the range I might've expected it. Question is going to be how many pts can YSU score? It is a huge step up for YSU's QB Davidson. He came out in relief vs NDSU in the 2H when they were down 0-21. He did lead them on two TD drives. Then he only played mop-up vs UK last year. I have a hard time thinking that YSU D can keep the lid on OSU O like happened last week, but the YSU D is pretty good and OSU is less dynamic at QB...so far this year. Of note, YSU's starting CB who was tied for team high in tackles 2022 and had the second most pbus, Jordan Trowers was penalized for targeting in the 2H last week, so he'll miss the 1H this week.

After seeing those numbers from 5dimes for the early games I was looking over, I'm somewhat surprised to see the Samford line at Western Carolina 10.5. Samford definitely has the name QB and Western Carolina is replacing their primary QB from last year, but Gonzales played a lot in 7 games last year and started a few games at the end of the season. It doesn't look like QB Davis they lost was that much better than Gonzales - Davis was just a somewhat experienced Junior and Gonzales was a tFr. The fact that Gonzales got so much PT as a true says that Davis wasn't really the guy they needed or wanted. Davis had a 16-13 ratio to Gonzales' 11-7 ratio and they were both a 67 - 63 % type passer and equally mobile. So I don't think we have a downgrade at QB for WCU with Gonzales - Harvard transfer Charlie Dean being an x-factor who does bring more experience, but I was never impressed with his play at Harvard. Overall WCU should be about as good or maybe better if the QB play improves from last season.

Defensively, something that jumps out to me from their Arkansas game, how did Arkansas only run for 105y on 36 attempts (2.9)? There was only 1 sack. And something else, Arkansas only outgained them by 88 yards while beating them 56-13! Ark outgained them by about 100y in the 1H, so WCU gained on them a bit in the 2H after it was already a 35-3 blowout at HT. Ark had short field TDs after turnovers of 31, 32 and 47 yards. WCU was in the RZ 5x but only came away with 1 TD (one of their failed trips ended up as an 85y pick-six). Biggest worry is how efficient Jefferson was 18-23-246-3-0 and Heirs is going to be good as well.

The box score from last year's WCU at Samford game is somewhat misleading. They lost 35-9 yet held a 456-393 TY edge (5.1-6.1) and a 32-25 FD edge. But they were -2 in TO margin and struggled on 3rd down and were also 0-3 on 4th down (including 1 at the goal line) and maybe the biggest thing was continually kicking short FGs of 20, 24, 30, 31 yards). They sacked Hiers 4x.

WCU's splash transfer LB Antoine Williams was listed on the 2 deep but he did not record a tackle vs Arkansas.

I said before that Samford was outgained in 4 of their 8 SoCon games that they won last year (WCU, Furman, Chatt and Mercer) and while they were favored in 6 games last year (avg line 12.9) they only covered 2 of those 6. There is a lot of turnover on that Samford D.

With this line being a little higher than expected I am definitely interested in WCU. Samford has the name and reputation, but WCU was has been mentioned by several people I listen to as an under the radar potential surprise team this year.

Marshall is gonna be a huge play for me

Albany gotta have both feet on the flight to Hawaii already

Another one, Campbell -4 at Citadel confirms the Massey and Sagarin PR that had it from like Pk to 3. I know The Citadel can be one of those teams that pulls out upsets every now and then and Campbell can be an underachiever, but man, if I can lay a FG maybe with them or like 4, that is something I have to try and do. Campbell led 29-3 late into the 4Q last year vs them (29-10 F). Citadel is supposed to be kind of transitioning to a different form of their option, while Georgia Southern was going to make life hard on them, it was a major struggle for them (lost 0-34 and outgained 212-473 and only converted 2-of-12 on 3rd down). Maybe this new HC is going to to able to light a fire under them? Campbell had the #1 recruiting class in FCS in 2022, I don't know what their FCS rank was in 2021, but see they were 88th overall FBS/FCS in 2021 (better than many big name P5 FBS schools). That talent has to make a difference or else, it is a failure of coaching.

Interesting that Eastern Illinois closed at 13.5 at Indiana State who was completely terrible and the projected numbers for them at BGSU are 15/18.5. I see BGSU QBs combined for 5 INTs last week which led to 2 FGs and a pick-six for Liberty! That is how EIU flurished vs Ind State getting 4 INTs, two returned for TDs. If this line were to come lower I might actually consider BG. After the first 1.5 quarters BG got some rhythm on offense and ran the ball pretty well, it was just the QBs were awful! If EIU was believed to be a nearly a 14 pt road dog to Indiana State, who was without their Fr POY QB from last year, then this line doesn't make much sense. Unless EIU is undervalued ... I think they are improved, but mostly benefitted from playing a really bad football team week 1.

Why no lines from 5dimes on Holy Cross - Boston College and Delaware State - Army? Any BC or Army injuries?

As mentioned before, have to lay it with North Dakota State. On paper Maine looks very weak especially on D where they lose their top 5 DL, lose all 3 LBs yet do return an experienced secondary from a group that finished last in the CAA! Their QB tranferred to UConn, after returing their top 4 RBs into last year, this year they lose their top 4 and 3 of their top 4 receivers are gone. That group is going to hang in the Fargo Dome? They did have some positives vs FIU last week, but it is FIU who has about zero offense as witnessed for two games now. NDSU should be able to make this score whatever they want.

SIU and NIU should be a good competitive game, but at only +3 I don't see how I can play anything there, they could win, but it's just not enough of a spread.

No line yet on Cal Poly vs San Jose, could be about 24? I was not impressed with Cal Poly last week. Even though they outgained San Diego by 219 yards and won 27-10 they had a poor running game and the passing game didn't look all that good despite the 364 yards. They got into the RZ 6x but only managed to score 2 TDs. Would think it only gets harder for them vs San Jose D and Spartan O should be able to move it well on them after facing USC and Oregon State, the San Jose St D should be ready to shut down an opponent like Poly. It's not apples to apples, but Poly has not competed well with their FBS opponents of late (lost by 28 and 53 to Fresno and 38 to Oregon St their last 3). Giving pause on the other side, San Jose does not routinely hammer their FCS opponents - since they became good under Brennan, they only beat Portland St by 4 as 21 fav last year, Southern Utah by 31 laying 24 in 2021 and Northern Colorado by 17 giving 13. Feels like the backdoor could be a problem. Even their big spreads last year vs Hawaii -15, Colorado St -24 and Nevada -24.5 were all non-covers. Yeah this has to be a pass.

Illinois State at Western Illinois could be one. Illinois State is one of those playoff contenders in the MVFC while Western Illinois is among the worst teams in the league. Illinois State O really exploded last week, got a big lead then kind of shut it down. They led 21-0 with a 163-31 yardage edge in the 1Q and later led 31-0 HT with a 283-85 edge. That was vs Dayton, doubt Western Illinois is better. It is one of those rivalry games. ILL St was 20 pt home fav last year but only won 20-13. That may be explained with the loss of their starting QB who was hurt in game 8. He was 5-2 as a starter and the offense averaged 334 ypg in their first 7 (20 ppg, 23 ppg if Wisconsin shut out not factored), but just 203 ypg without him (14 ppg) - which included the finale vs Western. Still history says this is a tighter game than it should be. Western has covered the last 3 as DD dogs (were only +2 in 2021 and lost by 7). Guess I want to play Illinois State here, but hard to justify laying the number. Illinois St does have some questions on D that weren't exposed or maybe even answered last week. I suppose this needs to be a stay way.

Some of the Phil Steele information on Lehigh last week painted probably too rosy of a picture and the simple fact was Villanova is a bad matchup for them. They didn't start the QB who had started 2021 and 2022, but instead went with last year's backup. ? I don't know, new coaching staff and all must see things differently. Over half his yards and most of his success passing came after Nova already led 38-3 then they let the 2 year starter come in for mop up. Villanova had a strong running game that overmatched Lehigh. So will it be any different vs Merrimack? Merrimack is definitely an up and coming team and they played very well for 2+ quarters last week vs Holy Cross before HC put the clamps down on them in the 2H. I should probably just move along from this game instead of guessing if Lehigh will play better in game 2 vs a lesser team or if Merrimack is good enough to be trusted as a fav (Wins vs NEC teams last year were just by 1, 7, 37, 6, 7 and 6 points).

Northern Arizona at North Dakota is interesting in that Drake did move it on ND last week with 332 total yards, but only came away with 7 pts. They often had drives into ND territory but would fumble or miss a FG or SOD as they were 4 separate times! Was just 14-0 HT and ND did blow some scoring opportunities as well, but they made up for it in the 2H and outgained them in the end by 320 yards! NAU is off their game vs Zona as the Wildcats got revenge for the 2021 upset. NAU started Cal transfer Kai Millner who was just ok in his debut, didn't turn it over, but didn't score either. NAU struggled out the gate and Zona was on fire. They lost 38-3, but did have some chances to score more...fumbled at the A39, FG from the A31 and missed FG from A09 - in total NAU was in the RZ 3x and failed to score a TD on any of those trips. NAU OL is a little suspect right now, but if they can get some play there their O has some pieces to produce. These teams played last year in Flagstaff and North Dakota came away with a 27-24 win as a 7.5 pt fav, but NAU did outgain them by 130 yards - different QB and OL for NAU though. North Dakota is a likely playoff team out of the MVFC, but I wonder are they that much better than NAU as in more than 2 TDs better? They are 8-9 ATS as a home fav the last 5 years. They have the offense, but do they have the D? 8th and 9th in MVFC D last year in scoring and yards - the score last week will help on that total for this season, but the yardage vs Pioneer League Drake 332 isn't the best. That would be Drake's 4th best yardage gained in their last 12 games. Drake only had 163 TY when ND shut them out 38-0 in 2021. Maybe they are better this year. 5 of North Dakota's 7 wins last year were by 11 pts or less. Kind of think that NAU competes here.

Believe I would like Northern Iowa hosting Weber. It is hard after seeing what we saw last week in Ames. UNI has just overmatched, an the OL that was a concern on paper was a major concern in reality. ISU straight got after them and the great Theo Day was not great at all. UNI D did do pretty well vs what is likely a limited ISU offense this season. But the mistakes and poor play on O and the intensity of the ISU D saw UNI get a hole and ISU's O really didn't have to do much. Humbled I'm sure, UNI returns home to face Weber St who went 10-3 last year, got a playoff win and only lost to Montana St by 8 in the second round. So this game would appear to be pretty tough? Weber lost a lot off that team. Their starting QB transfered to WKU and they lost 3 of their top 4 receivers. Their run game could still be strong and they leaned on that last week in a lackluster win vs Dll Central Washington. They had 306 TY (5.7ypp) in that one and some easy scores, like a 13y drive after a bad punt snap and a 100y KO ret TD. Game was 14-10 HT after those scores. Weber added a 66y TD run and another short field TD after a punt return. They won 35-10 but only outgained them 306-276, so I'm not real sure if the Weber O is capable of moving it down the field if they don't get some good fortune from the D and ST. Their HC is gone to be the BYU DC. Their OC became their HC and they retained some of their defensive coaches for co-DCs. Just doesn't look like the same team this year. Maybe UNI was overhyped and maybe they had some problem ares that were overlooked. If the line is just 2.5 as 5dimes suggests, I will have to jump on that and expect a better showing from them vs a Weber team who isn't as good this year.

Think I talked about Bucknell already in the ML dog thread. I'm a sucker for an ugly dog or two every week, and they are ugly that's for sure, but seems there were some things that led me to believe they can hang. The new QB appears better and has to be a lot better than anything they have had in a while. Facing VMI should be much easier going than what they went up against at JMU last week. And VMI benefitted from playing what could be one of the weaker teams in the FCS this year. I guess Bucknell is usually one of the weaker teams too. Maybe this line gets bet up after it opens, will have to watch.

That takes me midway through the early evening games.

So far my targets would be: Holy Cross on a good looking line around 2 TDs, Army anything 41 or less, BG if less than 2 TDs, Western Carolina, Campbell, NDSU, Illinois State but only at a number that probably won't be available like 10, Northern Arizona at an expected 2 TDs or better and Northern Iowa. Oh and maybe Bucknell for some reason. Will run through more later. Also, carolinablue had Tennessee listed, can't believe that line vs Austin Peay will be 31.5 very long at open so will have to hurry on it. Might be a good Over play too at 65. Just that Vols do have Florida on deck if that matters.

Expected QB for The Citadel transfer Dylan Fletcher (NIU) DNP week 1. He was said to be a "perfect fit" for the O that the new HC wants to implement. So the "new" Citadel O has not fully been revealed or shown yet. Citadel HC said that Underwood will start, Fletcher is said to be available (undisclosed injury). 6 of their 11 drives last week were 3-and-out

Yeah I’m curious what lines I will actually get when the time comes, but I like to look for those potential 50+ margin type games like my Cuse one last week.

Sometimes those jump out at me as the mismatches in the trenches are so great, I figure the fav can score on 8 out of 10 drives just by running the ball with a few passes thrown in for good measure, and the bench guys are so hungry for PT and to showcase their skills that they will still outplay the starters on the weaker team, so look ahead as don’t worry me as much in those spots.

Cuse could have scored 90 if not for those darn new clock rules (I’m joking, slightly). I have Tenny, Army, Navy, PSU, NDSU and maybe Florida, WVU, TCU and LSU in this batch for Week 2, but strongest are first 5 in my view.

The 5dimes lines listed on the Maddux site now show a lot of movement on the FBS games:

Penn State from 28.5 / 49.5 to 37.5 / 51.5
Army from 37.5 / 47.5 to 45.5 / 51.5
UK from 29.5 / 57.5 to 35.5 / 59.5
Toledo from 31.5 / 59.5 to 35.5 / 61
Navy from 41.5 / 51.5 to 46.5 / 55.5
Tennessee from 31.5 / 65.5 to 41.5 / 67.5
West Virginia from 32.5 / 55.5 to 39.5 / 57.5
Florida from 37.5 / 55.5 to 44.5 / 58.5

The newly listed FCS vs FBS ones - Holy Cross is +17.5 / 53.5 at BC, Richmond is +31.5 / 50.5 at Michigan St, Cal Poly is +27.5 / 57 at San Jose, FAMU is +21.5 at USF and Furman +20.5 /52.5 at S Car

New FCS vs FCS that wasn't listed before, South Dakota -20.5 / 48.5 vs St Thomas (MN). There were some very slight FCS adjustments, but just .5 pts here or there.

Notable to indicate the direction of movement on these - small move, BGSU down from 18.5 to 17, NIU up to 5 from 3, Akron from 24.5 to 23, Nevada from 3 to 4

Indiana State is currently expected to be without the reigning Missouri Valley Freshman of the Year in quarterback Cade Chambers, and his presence was sorely missed in the season-opener – Sycamore QBs threw four interceptions

If he doesn't play, and I'm not really sure he was that good last year (45% passer), Indiana State's offense is going to do next to nothing I would think.
