Elsewhere, Montana and Sacramento State improved to 2-0 on the year after their blowout wins on Saturday. The Grizzlies mauled Utah Tech 43-13 on the road, while the Hornets stung Texas A&M-Commerce 34-6 at home.

Two Big Sky squads had heart-breaking losses on Saturday, as Montana State lost by a mere inches at defending national champion South Dakota State and Eastern Washington dropped a double-overtime decision at 2022 Mountain West Conference champion Fresno State.

Ivy League joins the party this week. With everyone else having already played atleast 2 games, one might wonder, how do Ivy League teams do in their week 1 with everyone else's week 3? It helps that the Ivy's generally schedule very easy out of conference opponents. People will sometimes state how good Ivy League teams' record vs non-conference opponents is when stating why they can or should compete in a post season playoff, but other than one or two games here or there, the Ivy's feast on NEC, Patriot and Pioneer league teams out of conference.

2021 - Ivy League opening day, ATS as a fav 4-2 (as a fav of 21pts or less 4-0) - as a dog 0-2

Brown (+11) 24-45 at Rhode Island
Columbia (-17.5) 37-14 vs Marist
Cornell (+3.5) 21-31 vs VMI
Dartmouth (-30) 28-18 at Valpo
Harvard (-13) 44-9 at Georgetown
Penn (-10) 30-6 at Bucknell
Princeton (-21) 32-0 at Lehigh
Yale (-9.5) 17-20 vs Holy Cross

2022 - Ivy League opening day, ATS as a fav 2-3 (as a fav of 21pts or less 2-0) - as a dog 2-1 with two upset wins

Brown (+4.5) 44-38 vs Bryant
Columbia (-20.5) 38-3 at Marist
Cornell (+14.5) 28-22 at VMI
Dartmouth (-32) 35-13 vs Valpo
Harvard (-28.5) 28-21 vs Merrimack

Princeton (-32.5) 39-14 at Stetson
Yale (+8.5) 14-38 at Holy Cross

Thanks for all the info. I’m looking to play Miami over Bethune and WSU over UNC. Any idea what the numbers will be?

Since I have been following Ivy League football, Harvard has been nothing but over hyped and Tim Murphy is a legendary figure there, however his best days and best teams are clearly behind him. The one quality aspect of their team is the DL and that is the only quality thing about this years team. They don’t get good QB play, have problems with penalties and literally this year, except for DL, they lose just about everyone who was anyone off that team.

St Thomas’ D played well at South Dakota. 10 of SD’s 24 pts were off TOs that didn’t take much of a drive to cash in. St Thomas wasn’t very good on O however. I would think this is an under 49.5 and the total comes crashing down at open, although in the couple games we saw that happen at 2 weeks ago, it didn’t matter as those surprisingly, to me, went over. I’d be very surprised here. That is a very high total considering Harvards DL and LBs should create just as much trouble for St Thomas as South Dakota did. But I also see no reason for any confidence on what a lesser O from Harvard can do in this game compared to what South Dakota did to the Tommies. If the line got up to 3 TDs I might go dog and Under but Under either way looks very appealing.

5dimes has earky numbers that some tracker sites post.

Miami-48.5/67.5
WashSt-45.5/62.5

Looks like Sagarin says Miami-54 and Wazzou-42.

It felt like FCS was much better ATS last week vs FBS than they were week 1. I looked just at Saturday 9/2 vs 9/9 and that was indeed true. These records could vary from other accounts based on point spread - which ATS logs can be very misleading because a 1 to .5 pt difference from one source to another changes the records completely - but I have 15-15-3 ATS week 1 and 21-13-1 ATS week 2.

Of those 21 last Saturday, I count 9 that the FBS team was in a somewhat predictable flat spot either after being upset, pulling an upset or off an emotional ending to a game. Those being: HC vs BC - BC upset by NIU, SC St vs GT - GT blew DD 2H lead vs Louisville, SIU vs NIU - NIU off BC upset win, Portland St vs WYO - WYO off OT upset win over TT, Laf vs Duke - Duke off big upset win vs Clem, McNeese vs UF - UF off big opener game at Utah with Vols on deck, Nicholls vs TCU - Frogs off CU upset loss, Lamar vs ULM - ULM off Army upset win, E Wash vs Fresno - Fresno off Purdue win. It is not a stretch to include...Charles Southern vs Clemson (depending if the line was 49.5 to 51+ which is was in some spots), Austin Peay vs Tennessee (UT not off huge week 1 win, but still an anticipated kickoff game at neutral site vs ACC with Gators on deck), New Hamp vs C Mich (C Mich in MSU - ND sandwich). That would make a total of 12 of 21 ATS wins for FCS last Saturday that may've found the FBS in a weak spot from an psychological or preperation standpoint resulting in a "C game" type effort and execution.

There are some such games this week:

Bethune-Cookman at Miami Fl (Miami off Texas A&M win)
North Dakota at Boise (last week Boise took lead vs UCF with under 2min to go then lost on a off walk-off FG and have MWC opener on deck)
Long Island at Baylor (Baylor off allowing 2 TDs in final 2min, the last off an INT giving the game away to Utah, Texas on deck)
VMI at NC State (NC State off much anticipated home game vs Notre Dame)
Weber State at Utah (Utah off come-from-behind win at Baylor in somewhat improbable fashion, PAC12 opener on deck)
Idaho at Cal (Cal off tough game vs Auburn, PAC 12 opener on deck)
Northern Colorado at Wazzou (Wash State off upset win over Wisconsin, PAC12 opener on deck)
Villanova at UCF (UCF off come-from behind win at Boise with game winning FG as clock expired, at Kansas St on deck)
Tarleton State at Texas Tech (TT off back-to-back emotional games with OT loss in Laramie then narrow loss vs Ducks where they blew late 4Q lead)
Texas Southern at Rice (Rice off double OT win vs Houston)
Prairie View at SMU (SMU in Oklahoma - Iron Skillet sandwich)
Samford at Auburn (Auburn barely held on late at Cal, Texas A&M on deck)

That is 12 of the 21 FCS vs FBS games this week. Some of those situations make more sense than others, and there are some ugly dogs among them, but there will be closer than expected games among those and maybe some value on the spreads if they are higher than anticipated.

I just got home tonight. I'll be condensing my thoughts and ideas for Saturday tomorrow and Friday

One last thing I had been thinking of today...Holy Cross at Yale. Holy Cross ha their own let down to avoid this week. But Yale was the Ivy League Champion last year and they were a good team. But I think people who do not follow the Ivy League I have heard talk about the teams think that Yale was just some head and shoulders better team and that is not the case. Yale beat Harvard by 5, beat Princeton by 4, they lost to Penn by 7 and they only beat Dartmouth by 4. Throw in an 8 pt win vs Howard and a 24 pt loss to Holy Cross to open last season. So last year, Yale won the Ivy, but they didn't walk away with or dominate the teams they were fighting with for it. For 2023, it is likely they improve as a team and it's fine to have them as the favorite to win the league, just some perspective for what type of team they were last season. 5dimes and Maddux is showing Yale as a 2.5 pt favorite vs Holy Cross. Sagarin has Yale about 4-4.5 and Massey has Holy Cross -3 on a neutral. Other than the biggest of big games, Ivy fans don't turn out to the home stadiums and HC will likely have a large following at Yale Bowl for this game. If Holy Cross has their minds right, I would expect them to win, last year they outgained the Eli's by 265 yards. HC has won the last 2 and 3 of the last 4. You can't have people saying that HC should've been favored at BC and now have them dogged at Yale.

I like that Harvard under play and would be very happy to see 49+. I had 24 as a buy point on South Dakota and eventually that came. Very glad I had the patience to wait it out and not play 24.5 so I mustered a relatively underserved push. But I watched most of it and had the same takeaway re: the St. Thomas offense. Under at anything birth of 45 is worth a play imo.

Here is my current short list based on the 5D lines at Maddox, understanding that I may not see many of these by the time BOL and BM come out with their lines...Just posting for reference...

  • CCSU +27.5 (will probably take as low as 24.5)
  • Ball State -22.5 (prefer under 21 but Indiana State is bad, so may take anything under 24)
  • Youngstown State -27 (will probably take under 28)
  • Morgan State -4 (I'm a sucker)
  • ACU -3 (would probably take anything under 7)
  • URI +5 (would probably take any points as I think they win SU)
  • UNH -6.5 (would probably take anything under 10)
  • Central +39.5 (will probably take as low as 28.5, as I think Central will give them a game for at least a half)

Here are ones I had on my short list before I saw the lines posted on Maddox, as these probably won't come close to what I would like...

  • North Dakota (seeing 17.5, was hoping for at least 21.5)
  • Idaho (seeing 175, was hoping for at least 21.5)
  • Nova (no line, but would love to see 21.5...notice a theme here haha)
  • Illinois State (seeing 11.5, was hoping for under 7)
  • Richmond (seeing 24.5, was hoping for a lot less)
  • S Dakota State (seeing 45.5, was hoping for a lot less)
  • MTSU (seeing 27.5, was hoping for under 3 TDs)
  • Coastal (seeing 32.5, was hoping for under 24)
  • Stony Brook (seeing 17, was hoping for 28.5 - if it goes much lower, may consider Arky State)
  • Sac State (seeing 9.5, was hoping for 21.5)
  • N Dakota State (seeing 19, was hoping for under 17)

Some observations from looking at last week's box scores:

Abilene led PV 31-7 HT, but for the game Prairie View outgained them 535-393 (6.2-9.1) behind 301y rushing (5.0)!. PV scored just 2 TDs on 6 RZ trips and just 3 of 6 overall, most of which occurred in the 2H where they fumbled at the A20, INT from the A06, fumble at the A20 again, missed FGs from the A03 and A14. ACU had a blk'd punt ret TD and an 80y fumble ret TD.

A week after Alabama State beat Southern, they lost to Miles. ASU led 14-0, had slight 20y TY edge for the game, but were -2 TOs and failed to score any TDs on both RZ trips. Miles was better on their 3rd downs conversions too.

Albany fought hard vs both Marshall and Hawaii, yet Albany was outgained by 113 vs MU and 140 vs UH in those. Albany has been good in their 3 games at getting pressure and penetration with their DL, but gone unnoticed perhaps is a weakness in the Albany OL, Marshall sacked them 7x and Hawaii sacked them 9x.

Alcorn State has completed under 40% passes in both games this year (USM and SFA)

Austin Peay has allowed 11 sacks and 24 TFLs in two games (SIU and Tennessee)

Long Island ran for 224y (6.8) on Bryant - they lost by 11 despite a 402-399 TY edge (6.5-5.5). LIU was -3 TOs and 1 TD on 3 RZ trips

Central Connecticut State lost at home as DD fav to Stonehill. Stonehill led 16-7 HT and while CCSU made a 2H comeback to tie, they could not overcome -3 TOs and two missed FGs

Charleston Southern had 4 FDs to Clemson's 37 (679-73 in total yards)

Chattanooga led 17-0 HT and 24-7 3Q, only won 27-20 but did have a 116 TY edge over Kennesaw. Mocs D had 5 sacks and 10 TFLs

Davidson lost to Barton 31-33. Barton was just 1 of 12 on 3rd downs! (but were 3 of 4 on 4th down). Davidson missed a FG and was also SOD at the B05. Barton was 4-7 last season.

Delaware was held to just 5 FDs at Penn State!

BGSU led Eastern Illinois just 21-12 HT, but outscored them 17-3 in the 2H. BG completed 83% of their passes and finished with a 184 TY edge.

Eastern Kentucky improved from being outgained by 365 yards in the 53 pt loss to Cincy, to only being outgained by 103 yards in their 11 pt loss at UK.

A week after NDSU shredded the Eastern Washington D, EW held Fresno to just 364y (5.0) in their OT loss (EW only outgained by 2 yards).

Gardner Webb outgained Elon by 108 yards. GW led 27-13 4Q, but allowed Elon to tie (after a GW fumble while killing clock) forcing GW to go down and score game winning TD with just :14 left to win 34-27. There were 31 pts in the 4Q.

Florida A&M was able to only lose by 14 at USF depsite being -5 TOs! FAMU was outgained by just 33y.

An unexpected result to me, but no fluke, Fordham outgained Buffalo by 97y and converted 11 of their 19 3rd downs. They also outrushed UB 150-97 (3.5-3.2).

Furman led 14-7 early 2Q, but South Carolina would score the next 40 pts! Furman got a garbage score to make the final 47-21.

Georgetown outgained Sacred Heart by 250y a week after they outgained Marist by 199y.

Norfolk St lost to a Dll team last week, this week benefitted from a +2 TO margin that resulted in 10 pts off just 10y of offense in their 8 pt upset win at Hampton. Hampton had a 95y TY edge (7.8-5.6).

Idaho could've won by much more in their 33-6 win at Nevada. They outgained UNR by 197y but were just 2 of 7 scoring TDs in the RZ a week after being 5-for-5 vs Lamar. Idaho kicked 4 FGs and ended the game on the N17.

Illinois State had a 461-200 TY edge (6.9-2.9) at Western Illinois. ISU fumbled twice, once in WIU territory and a muffed KO following a WIU FG which allowed WIU to make a 20-9 game early 4Q at 20-15 game (they had gone for 2 and failed on the TD). ISU got 7 sacks making WIU finish with -5 yards rushing.

Indiana State would've been shut out back-to-back weeks if it wasn't for a 75y fumble return TD vs IU. Indiana St was held to 93 total yards. Last year's MVFC Fr POY QB Chambers DNP again for the Sycamores

Lamar threw an INT in the EZ on their opening drive, missed a FG from the ULM15 and threw another INT in the 1H. ULM also blk'd a punt for TD in the 1H. ULM led 21-0 HT after all of that, but only won 24-14. Yards were just 384-311 (6.2-5.0).

Lehigh and Merrimack was moved to Harvard's stadium after storm damage and power outage. The game also had a weather delay. Ultimatley Lehigh got a 14-12 upset win as 9.5 dog, they held a 329-276 (5.1-3.9) TY edge the week after Merrimack emptied the tank vs Holy Cross. The teams combined for just 3-of-28 on 3rd down.

UT Martin ran for 405y (9.9)! But Missouri State threw for 402y (8.4ypa) as both teams finished with over 500y. Missouri State was -2 TOs. UT Martin led 24-7, but Missouri St tied it 24-24 and again 31-31. UT Martin went back up 38-31 with under 2min left, but Missouri St's final possession ran out of time at the UTM24.

Montana led Utah Tech 36-0 at HT and 43-0 3Q and won 43-13 laying 23.5, but Utah Tech was throwing in the EZ at the end of the game threatening a backdoor. Montana looked much better this week than they did vs Butler, but they did finish with just a 397-361 TY (5.1-5.2) - 153 Utah Tech yards on their final 3 drives of the game. Montana capitalized with 21 pts off 4 Utah Tech TOs

South Dakota State was ripe for the upset, but Montana State was repeatedly in the RZ yet could only score 1 TD on 5 trips (3-for-3 FGs). QB1 Mellott was injured for the Bobcats, Chambers filled in and nearly pulled off the upset.

Akron scored 2 defensive TDs vs Morgan State, one with just :52 left after Morgan fumbled trying to kill the clock. The teams combined for 9 turnovers. Akron ran for just 8 yards. Morgan State's D has given them a chance as 20+ dogs each week this year, but their offense was held to just 213y (3.6) at Richmond and 231y (3.2) at Akron.

NC Central led just 17-16 at HT, but shut out A&T in the 2H to win 30-16. A&T's D did a good job and their running game kept them in it in the 1H with long breakaway runs, but ultimately, again A&T's O was too little as NCCU had a 345-207 TY edge. On the season A&T has completed just 9-of-24 passes for 67 yards.

New Hampshire had a 98 yardage edge in their 3 pt loss at Central Michigan (538-440, 8.2-6.1). Central Michigan was better on the ground with 236 (4.5) as they completed just 8-20 passing but for 204 yards. UNH ran for just 45y (3.2) yet passed for 493 (9.5 ypa). CM kicked the game winning FG as time expired. UNH was down by 14 on 3 separate occasions but kept coming back.

North Alabama ran 109 plays! They led Tarleton 28-17 HT, but lost 31-52 while finishing with a 565-477 (5.2-8.7) TY edge. UNA's D gave up several big plays in the 2H including a pick-six. UNA fumbled at the T12, T36, own 19 and threw an INT at the T40. Their final 2 drives were SOD at the T10 and T26. In addition to that there was also a controversial muffed punt in the 4Q when it was just a 7pt game, where a player was pushed into the UNA punt returner, but the refs still gave the ball to Tarleton. An unsportsman like conduct on UNA moved the ball to the NA16, after that it became 45-31 Tarleton and the pick-six next possession made it 52-31.

North Dakota only outgained Northern Arizona by 3 yards 448-445 (6.6-6.6). Over 100y of UNA's yards did come on their final two possessions when they back doored thanks to an onside kick recovery also, but NAU moved it throughout the game but failed to score pts, similar to what Drake did the week prior at ND. ND's D is more of a bend-don't break unit and does create some negative plays and turnovers, but they yield yards. ND returned a blk'd xp for 2 the other way in this game to make it 22-9 at the time instead of 20-10. There was only 1 turnover in the game, it was a NAU fumble at the ND20. Other possessions accounting for the empty yards by NAU was a SOD drive at the ND36 and a FG from the ND09.

Portland STate was outgained by Oregon 529y in week 1, but just 27y at Wyoming week 2.

Rhode Island D did a good job limiting the Stony Brook O, it was 35-7 until SB scored mid 4Q, but the URI O was a little underwhelming themselves. They scored on a fumble ret TD and while they had 414y of total O, there was a stretch they punted 5 straight possessions 2Q-3Q.

Robert Morris surprisingly outgained St Francis (PA) by 154y in their upset win as 20 pt home dogs.

Sac State outgained A&M Commerce by 297y but only won 34-13. They got up 24-0 and led 24-6 after an INT put Commerce on the Sac14 yard line, 27-6 HT. In the 2H only had 4 possessions with the first going for a TD, then punt, SOD near midfield and the final one to end the game again near midfild.

The best QB on the field in Cullowhee NC Saturday was not Samford's Michael Heirs, it was Cole Gonzales for Western Carolina! Heir's may've had more yards, but just 1 TD while being sacked 6x by the Catamount D. Gonzales was a better 83% threw for 2 TDs and added 68y rushing. WCU outgained Samford 546-361 (6.5-6.3). All those yards and "just" 30 pts - WCU scored just 2 TDs on 6 trips to the RZ.

Dll Colorado Mesa outgained San Diego 443-390 (7.6-5.0) enroute to their OT win and they did so despite -2 TOs.

South Carolina St did open with Jackson St and played two FBS schools in Charlotte and GT, they actually covered vs both of their FBS opponents, but have been outgained by an average of 252.33 ypg! Their game vs GT was actually their best all around offensive outing (13 pts more than the first two games combined, 291 TY where their first two games avg just 184.5, 53% completions instead of the 35% they completed week 0 and week 1, 4.8 ypp better than their 3.5 and 3.1 previously).

South Dakota held St Thomas to just 166 TY! St Thomas started a tr fr QB for his first game, Tak Tateoka.

Southern Illinois pulled hte 14-11 upset win over NIU, but they were outgained by 141y and held to just 219 TY of O. SIU converted just 1 of 11 3rd downs! 3 NIU INTs were the key.

Stetson has played two NAIA schools to open the season. Week 1 was a fortunate OT win over St Thomas (FL) and last week they got the more comfortable win, just 10 pts while they did outgain Webber International by 209y and led 38-7 at one point. It appears that Matt O'Connor is the new starter with 2022 and week 1 starter Brady Meitz coming on in relief.

Texas Southern was down 50-3 at HT at Toledo.

Arkansas Pine Bluff was attempting a tying 31y FG with :54 left in the game, but it was blk'd and Tennessee State ret'd it 92y for a TD and the 24-14 win. Tenn State did lead 17-0.

Dustin Fletcher did make his debut for The Citadel and their new offense vs Campbell. Not like it mattered much as Campbell blew them out 56-7. Fletcher was 11-15-134-1-0, but 75 of those yards were on a single completion. The Citadel did accumulate 332 yards for just 7 pts? Four 2H drives ended being SOD at the CM22, CM34 and CM18 and at the CM23 when the clock ran out (196 of their yards came on those four final drives).

Valpo threw 5 INTs in their upset loss at NAIA Indiana Wesleyan. Valpo outgained them by 34y but also only managed to score 1 TD on 4 RZ trips.

William and Mary won just 23-6 hosting Wofford with a 226 TY edge. Somehow they only scored 2 TDs on 5 RZ trips. Wofford converted just 1 of 13 3rd downs and only 156 yards of O (8 of 17 passing).

YSU showed well for themselves at Ohio State. They did lose by 28 and were outgained by 248 yards. Still the YSU OL and DL had their moments as they were not overpowered. OSU only scored 7 pts in the 2H. YSU converted 7 of 15 on 3rd down, OSU just 5 of 12 (2 of 3 on 4th).

  • UNH -6.5 (would probably take anything under 10)
  • Central +39.5 (will probably take as low as 28.5, as I think Central will give them a game for at least a half)

My printout from Maddux shows Morgan dogged by 4 and Rhodie favored by 5. I have yet to become familiar with Towson. I do know Morgan State's D is pretty good, it was against a somewhat rebuilding Richmond O and Akron. Is Towson better? I don't know. Morgan just needs some O to go with that D.

I like Abilene as well, but they are +3, for now.

The URI - Maine game is Friday now as they try to avoid any bad weather from the hurricane. So make that a note for the line tomorrow.

Is there an injury for Boise? I haven't seen an 'official' line.

I don't know where to see FCS SP+ numbers people talk about here. Sagarin and Massey have UCF like 28-31 vs Villanova. Not sure it will be that high.

I think this might be a good spot to take Eastern Illinois vs the Red Birds even though ILL St was better last week than the final score suggests.

I wanted Richmond as well but am very surprised that line is so high, but it is Delaware State...

Sac State even at a low number has some appeal to me.

So this summer I had Central Arkansas as a ML target at NDSU. Now, NDSU has played really well, just a not quite an A game 1H last week, but good enough. They look good compared to last year and now I will not be playing any UCA ML, but I might still like them + pts. I think that 19 might go higher rather than down based on how NDSU has looked and what people will expect them to do. What do you think of the UCA game at Oklahoma State earlier? They are pretty solid team and I think and I'll be watching where that line ends up.

North Dakota Fighting Hawks has played well vs FBS the last 2 years, atleast part of the game.

Tied 7-7 HT at Nebraska last year. Tied 17-17 3Q before Neb pulled away and won by 21.

2021 led at Utah State 21-7 end 1Q and held a lead into the 4Q before crashing and losing by 24

What is going on with Boise this year? Seems like they are off. This would also be a good Over game as ND moves it and puts up points and their D yields yards. WR Bo Belquist is really good, catches everything and makes guys miss. Just not sure what Boise O is doing this year.

Thanks for the update as I notice sometimes they post funny on the site. Definitely like Morgan as a dog and still like URI at 5, but again who knows what lines will be available come Saturday.

Georgetown's O dominated Marist week 1 as they did last week vs Sacred Heart they had two 100y rushers (250+ rush yards each of last two games). 6.3 and 6.8 ypp in each of those. QB is new starter, but a 5th year guy and has looked pretty good, likes to run too. Their D returns 11 starters and 97% of their production from last year and so far this year they look it - they are causing problems for the likes of Marist and Sacred Heart. Why wouldn't the same continue vs Stonehill?

Stonehill pulled that upset at CCSU last week where they were bet up to a DD road dog, won on a career long FG for their K as time expired.

Stonehill found offensive success they may not find here and CCSU gained 420y on that D good enough for 7.0 ypp. CCSU lost 3 fumbles.

Georgetown moves to 3-0 for the first time since 2016. That line won't be staying at 9.5 very long at open.

Great points…I made the mistake of taking Oklahoma State in that one, but based on what I saw, it was hard to tell if it was really CAU or just bad all around play by Okie State. Will most likely lay off that one unless it’s 16.5 which I don’t think will happen.

I'm sure I will play William and Mary at pretty much any line. Charleston Southern is a very bad football team. I noted last week how they struggled week 1 vs a Dll school, they have a new coaching staff and lots of new players filling in spots. Nothing really happened vs Clemson that changed my opinion at all, so they scored some pts off Clemson turnovers. William and Mary is off a less than impressive 23-6 win although they had nearly 400y of O (5.9) and their D pretty much smothered a not good Wofford team. I'm surprised PR and 5dimes have this line in the 15-17 range. W&M one of the top teams in the country not in the MVFC or Big Sky and Charleston Southern is among the worst anywhere.

Do you think that one will be less than 35.5?

At open? I'd say yes. Again, not sure what a SP+ line would be, but both Sagarin and Massey have it 15.3 and 17. They must have too high a PR on Charleston Southern or something? 5dimes shows it at 16.5. No way it doubles in the first few minutes after they open

How about Temple beating up on Norfolk State? Note that Norfolk St was outgained by 183 yards to Virginia State out of Dll and lost by 9. They upset Hampton last week who was in a Grambling - the 'Real HU' sandwich. It wasn't that bad for Norfolk in that one, only outgained by 95 yards. I just need a little assistance with Temple's capabilities to cover 4 TDs?

I said I think this might be a good spot to take Eastern Illinois. I did not see them being competitive last week and they weren't. They are a pretty limited offense with just 338y vs Ind St and 325 vs BGSU.

I had thought that Illinois State was going to be rebuilding on D this season, but so far they have been able to play a Pioneer opponent and one of the worst teams in the MVFC last week and handled each very well. I think this Eastern team is a better test for them. I am a little worried about the EIU OL as I think they have some injuries there, but if they can block I think they have enough success on O to keep this a close game. Mentioned Georgetown above, EIU's new QB Holley is a Georgetown transfer where he was a multi-year starter passed for over 4000y before coming here. Their transfer RB Daniels has been good too (1400 career yards before coming here) and I actually like a few of their players on D as well. This is year 2 for their coaching staff, HC is an alum and I think they show signs of improvement this year.

This is one of the longest FCS rivalries and big for both teams. EIU has not won since 2016 and Illinois State usually has their way with them, although EIU has been down for a while now and Illinois St is generally respectable at least.

2022 Illinois State (-18.5) 35 vs EIU 7 -3 turnovers
2021 Illinois State 31 (-16) at EIU 24
2019 Illinois State 21 (-18) at EIU 3
2018 Illinois State 48 (-20.5) vs EIU 10
2017 Illinois State 44 at EIU 13
2016 EIU 24 at Illinois State 21
2015 Illinois State 36 at EIU 33 (ot) - last year EIU made the playoffs

I'm thinking a renewed EIU team in their home opener vs long time instate rival who hasn't faced any kind of capable team yet makes this a game. The key is going to be if Ill St actually has any kind of drop off on D. So far they have allowed just 200 ypg in each. Coming into this year they returned 0 starts on DL (only 26% of production returned) and they lost the MVFC D POW at LB to make for a rebuilding front 7. If I'm wrong about that then Eastern is going to struggle. And I'm also not sure that Illinois State is quite as good on O as their first two opponents has allowed them to be. We shall see.

I've been trying to get a feel for some of the Ivy openers. Columbia may be a good target.

Ivy League all time winnest coach, Al Bagnoli retired due to health reasons before fall camp. They named their 7 year OC as the interim and promoted their RB coach who first started working at Columbia in 2015, but left for one year stints in offensive roles with the Eagles and Chiefs before returning to Columbia the last 5 seasons. They had to replace their longtime DC last year (promoted LB coach) and overall the D improved run D and lower ppg. Coaching wise, last year kind of felt like it might be Bagnoli's last year, if they had won the Ivy I'm pretty sure he would retire, but they still had yet another winning record for a team with few of them in their history, it was overall a disappointing season given some expectations. Point here being, while it was a sudden retirement, it wasn't something that was totally a shock.

Columbia returns both QBs who started last year. Green was a 10 game starter in 2021 and he started til injury mid season last year although the offense underperformed once he got into Ivy play. It was back up Bell who came in and added some running ability and led the team to 3 wins in his 5 starts and put up better numbers. He is a 5th year and appears to be the starter to open the season. Columbia has very good returning WRs to throw to, now that Princeton has lost their dynamic duo, this is probably the best WR unit in the Ivy. RB is fine. OL is a concern. They lose 3 starters from a veteran unit last year and they move in their #1 TE from 2022, who by accounts, has gained a lot of weight and they think highly of him. But the OL play is going to be something to watch and looks like the only weak area on the offense.

Defense, they lose a super MLB, but do return a lot to a good front 7, especially their DL. Columbia's pass D wasn't always very good - at least for this week vs Lafayette that should matter less as the Leopards aren't as good or interested in passing all that much.

Columbia has done well in recent years out of conference, last year they beat the likes of Marist, Georgetown and Wagner all by 3+ TDs (3-0 ATS). 2021 they only went 1-2 ATS (3-0 SU) however they were breaking in a new QB and were a lesser O at the time.

Lafayette isn't a strong team. They are replacing a lot of their best players from their 2022 DL which should help the weaker Columbia OL. Lafayette has not had good QB play in a long time - they played at Duke last week, so whatever there, but their pass numbers vs Duke were consistent with what they did at Sacred Heart week 1 (53-50% completions, under 100y passing in each, 4.6-4.8 ypa, 1-3 TD-INT ratio on the year). They like to run and that should play into Columbia's strength on D. Lafayette O was better at the beginning of the Duke game kind of surprising, but Duke was likely still heavily hungover post-Clemson. Laf has a good young RB who had a big game to open their season. In that opener, Sacred Heart was in position to win that game. Lafayette did play well, but SHU missed a lot of opportunities in that game and it could be said they lost it as much or more than Lafayette won it. This is Lafayette's home opener and I'm sure they view this as a winnable game, so emotionally they are going to be pretty high for this one and it is of course Columbia's first game of the 2023 season. Sounds as if Lafayette people feel they competed fairly well at Duke last week - so maybe some confidence for them. I'm not rushing to lay many pts with Columbia, line shows 4 at current, but I'll watch any movement there and see if it moves, if we were live betting (and I've only seen some very limited live options on Bovada for FCS) I'd be looking to take Columbia if they were to fall behind or something.

In the other games, essentially I would rather have Holy Cross than Yale. I'd probably rather have St Thomas vs Harvard at a higher line than Harvard at a lower line (St Thomas QB situation does makes me nervous).

Penn is another pretty good team, Ivy road favorite at Colgate. Penn has a lot back, but like Columbia are replacing pieces on their OL and actually the Penn OL may be more of a concern not just losing 3 starters, but who they lost in 2 of those were very good players transferring to FBS schools. If the OL is good for Penn, they have an offense that can be good through the air with returning QB and receivers. Not sure who their RB will be this year. Penn's D should be pretty stout all around. I just don't know what I think about Colgate, they've been very overmatched their first two games and put up numbers one would expect from being severely overmatched. Penn is not known as a fast starting team. They opened with Colgate last year and actually Colgate led 14-3 HT, Penn won 25-14. They only led Lafayette 6-0 HT before winning 12-0. Let Dartmouth 7-3 HT last year, went on to win 23-17. So not great starts to early games for them and I suppose I picked Columbia instead of Penn because I don't want to lay nearly 10 pts on the road with them here. However, if I see they won something like 27-10 I would not be surprised at all. Actually, 48.5 is probably too high of a total.

Ivy teams are always good Under looks. In 2021 Penn had just 2 Overs (avg line 38.5 in those) and 8 Unders last year (avg line 44.25). 2022 they were 5-5 O/U, but their first 3 games all went Under (avg line 40.33). Every single Princton game, all 10, went Under last year! Talking closing numbers not openers. Columbia was 6 Unders to 4 Overs and opened the season with 4 straight Unders (avg total 49.5). Dartmouth was 7 Unders to 3 Overs. Even Yale, I have 5-3-2 on Under-Over-Push for totals. So Penn - Colgate 48.5, that seems really high. Not one team in the Ivy had more Overs than Unders last year, some were 5-5 (like Harvard actually because their D allowed more pts than one would expect). They are just not real strong or consistent offensive teams, matchup depending, and generally pretty solid defensive teams.

I'll see what Brown, Cornell, Dartmouth and Princeton look like.

I put on some of that Lafayette - Duke game. I don't know how much of it was Duke being flat, but Lafayette had some moments. I was surprised, makes me wonder if they are perhaps a little better than people, me, think.

Cornell looks decent traveling to Lehigh on as short road fav. I remember looking at Cornell last summer thinking they were going to be awful. The fans and alumni were very unhappy with their HC - there was even speculation if their AD was committed to football - their OL entering last year was very inexperienced, their secondary was gutted, it looked like they were going to be the worst team in the Ivy and maybe looking for a new head coach for next (this) year. Wang was there after playing limited in 2021, but he wasn't the guy yet and hard to know what to expect out of him at that point. But they went 5-5, good considering they had losing records for the last 10 seasons!

Wang at QB is one of the top 3 QBs in the Ivy for sure. If Grooms is 1, we could probably debate the next best QB, but Wang is right there, top 2-3. Dual threat, makes plays, makes that team what it is. This year they return a lot around him, 80% OL back, lose top WR but have everyone else back including a good TE. D returns 87% of their tackles. They have probably the best LB in the league as well in 3x All Ivy Jake Stebbins and it is an experienced defense in front and behind him. They should be able to improve on what they were last year on both sides.

Road favorite? It's pretty rare for Cornell. They aren't bad road team though, won their first 3 road games of the season last year, including their season opener at VMI. 2021 was rougher, but this team is better than 2021.

Lehigh isn't real good at much. They pulled that upset last week which was kind of a mess. Merrimack thinks they are playing their home opener, but then have to unexpectedly learn the night before they will instead travel across town to Harvard's stadium to play their game, which the start was delayed over 2 hours. And I think Merrimack, really, there is no good reason they should lose to Lehigh. Merrimack is an improving team and played well for 3Q at Holy Cross week 1. I feel everything that happened the week prior there and with the venue change, that worked to Lehigh's advantage. Merrimack had seven 3-and-out punts, that makes no sense to me. They were 1 of 14 on 3rd down a week after being 47% at HC. Either the Lehigh D all of a sudden got really really good, or it was just an outlier game. I'd say Leghigh is pretty beatable and Cornell is good enough to get the road win here, but it's 3 or less, for me. Nobody wants to lay road pts with Cornell, when Big Red win it isn't by much: 6, 3, 4, 3, 4 - those are the margin of victory in their 5 wins last year. One of those wins was against Lehigh in Ithica. Lehigh led 15-10 HT then Cornell shut them out in the 2H and won 19-15 laying 8. Lehigh had a slight 17y edge overall (Cornell 6.2-5.1 ypp).

Otherwise, I'd kind of like Bryant, but don't really want to lay it. I think their offense could have a big day vs Brown. Just these kind of teams, I can't get too excited about laying pts because they are hard teams to really trust, they're just not consistently good enough. Brown is never good on D and don't look it again this year. They do usually produce on offense so they have a shot at staying in the game. Bryant has a good QB and offense. I thought they would show better at UNLV week 1 and that was way off. Coach felt that the setting was too distracting for them. They stayed on the strip! Playing in that stadium for kids from Bryant, it was an awe factor and UNLV really blew them out although Bryant did put up 409 yards. They racked up 399 yards last week, but they aren't getting the scores out of it they should, 14 pts week 1 and 21 pts last week against LIU. These teams play crazy games which also makes me hesitant to lay many pts. Brown HC used to be Bryant HC. Last year was an 2OT thriller. They play just about every year and the last 6 have been one score games.

If this was last year's Princeton team I would bet them in a heartbeat at this or higher line. But Princeton lost some really good WRs, really good. Their best RB also left who was just really starting to develop, transferred to Stanford. Princeton does return a starting QB for a change, and he is good. There OL however I don't think is good, they always seem to underachieve when I watch them. So if that OL is the same (they lost 3 starters) and the pieces around Stetstrom are worse, it just doesn't make me too excited. And the Princeton DL was really strong last year, they lost their top 6 from the DL. Should any of that matter at San Diego? A team with less proven play makers laying 3 TDs on the road, actually I think I will look to play against Princeton in the coming weeks instead.

Read Dartmouth has won like 12 straight season openers? They only started with the Granite bowl once since 2006 though and as far as I can see other than that have some creampuff type opener to get their feet under them. Not this year. UNH is rolling offensively. I think last week we saw the UNH D is sitll a liability. Dartmouth O has lost it's luster though, they used to run a dual QB with one good passer and one good runner. They lost the passer and now are stuck with the good runner, who is a bad thrower and trying to find the other good thrower guy. Quite the drop off for them last year. They should still be a strong running team and UNH will give up yards on the ground, although last year UNH shut them out 14-0 in a weird one. Dartmouth is a hard team to get an idea for. If they find a passing component to their offense, they will be tough like they were in 2021. The D loses their top DL and LB, but return the rest of the front 7 and lose both CBs. I'd want to give the edge to New Hampshire, but it is hard to trust their defense at times.

Rhode Island opened at 7 BOL, quickly went to 8.5. I'd rather see it go higher and take a shot on Maine.

BM has 7.5 112...pass for me as I wanted less than 6...not going to force anything as there will be plenty more opportunities tomorrow

Have no idea how the reschedule will impact these guys so staying away. Also just read that Maine has won 14 of the last 15 in the series, weird...I like URI but 7.5 isn't a line I want to take.

The Rhode Island D looked good last week vs a pretty below avg Stony Brook O. I think Maine has some success vs them tonight. Question will be then if Maine can limit the URI O which I am not sure of. Having faced even a bad FBS team and NDSU should prepare them though to take on a good team like URI.

It's 9 at BOL now

just looked at Bet Rivers and they opened 7.5 I believe

I just took +10 at BR -113

They took it off from 7.5 and put it back up at 10

I have various Maine lines now from 10 to 11.5 and a couple MLs.

That record vs URI is as good as it is because Maine was a frequent playoff type team not so long ago, winning 14 of the last 16. Maine has been down the last 4 years, although they still went 2-1 over that time (DNP 2020). Coaching change last year and it's a rebuild. Finsihed 2-9 last year, but only lost by 4 at URI.

There is a reason that Rhode Island has been 7-4 the last two years and not made the playoff, they are good, but they aren't anything special. They are trying to breakthrough this year and maybe they can. QB Hill is pretty good, but he is also pretty much a 50% passer.

Maine looked really rough on paper this year, now after two games, I don't hate them. They aren't strong or anything, but I think they can find some offense in this game because URI's D isn't that great either - not a unit you really want to expect to win you games. Maine's current QB Robertson was not the #1 last year, but he started some games in 2021, actually had a really good game and beat URI last time he faced them in 2021. OL and running game is where Maine is going to have to win tonight though and they have an exciting Fr RB Kenan and 3 starters with 42 starts among them with 2 new guys. I am assuming this is what Maine will have success with tonight and I'm also assuming URI can be run on.

If Maine has anything good about their D, and I'm not really sure they do, but if so it is in their secondary, that is where all their most experienced defenders are as they have several players who have rotated and seen time back there with 3 multi-year starters. So if the 50% Hill shows up tonight, I'm not really afraid of that.

1st year with the new staff last year, Maine was a good CAA home dog, 3-1 ATS with covers vs 2 playoff teams, losing to UNH by just 1 and Richmond by 10.

Again, I think it is a good spot to play Maine here. I think we will see the best offense out of Maine so far this year and recent history means they should have some confidence they can compete with URI.

Nice info man, I don’t have anything on it but will be watching and pulling for Maine to win SU!

Maine was just like a slow death. They did have more scoring and balance on O than their other games. A couple penalties and mistakes really hurt them that a team like that can't recover from. And of course the announcer jinx on their final possession "they haven't thrown an INT this game" I was like 'whyyyyy', next play INT in the EZ which if they would've scored that possession they would've got in the backdoor. At any rate, URI had to work for it and just slowly walked away with it.

I would think YSU is pretty decent play depending where the line comes out at, assuming the sub-4TD line won't last. I wouldn't expect YSU has a post-Ohio State hangover. They played well enough and I think compared to what they would've looked like in that game if it were say 2 years ago, nothing that happened in that game negatively effected my opinion of them. They have a bye on deck before facing their nemesis UNI. So far this year, they came out tentative and tight vs Valpo in the 1H, but then played with their hair on fire in the 2H. They should get after Robert Morris pretty good I'd assume. Robert Morris might be a little better this year. Their loss at AF played out pretty much as anyone would expect with the only exception being that RM covered, but they were outgained 469-156 in that one. The big surprise is that they upset St Francis last week. St Francis did lose a lot off last year's team and it showed up last week. YSU poses a much more difficult challenge on both sides of the ball than St Francis. RM tried running the ball a bunch on St Francis but could only manage 2.5 ypc. YSU is pretty deep so even when the second teamers come in, unless they go real deep the YSU reserves should still handle business.

We will find out how good Idaho's defense is when they play Cal. Nobody I heard can ever remember an FCS team beating FBS in back-to-back weeks. There have been a couple that had two FBS wins in the same season. I am not sure how the Idaho D is going to fare in this one, but I think Idaho can compete, their skill players appear FBS comparable. Cal plays some of the better west coast FCS teams so they should be prepared for what a playoff caliber FCS team is going to bring and not take them lightly. It is a tough sandwich for Cal tough Auburn - Idaho - PAC 12 opener. Idaho dominated UNR last week, which is not saying much, they were road favored, but more effiicient offense for all their yards they racked up, it should've been worse than the 33-6 win. I could see myself having Idaho and the pts, assuming it will be DD, may not be north of 2 TDs though.

Just saw the Bryant line looking like a 6 right now, I thought it was higher, maybe one of the PRs had it higher. I could play Bryant vs Brown if the line is a TD or less.

Southeast La and Eastern Washington - man I don't know, both have played really tough schedules and the loser will be 0-3!

Central Arkansas feels a little dangerous vs NDSU, just because NDSU really does look improved this year. Of course they were in Frisco last year, but it was not a good NDSU team by their standards in terms of how they play and how they win and beat teams. They are looking more like that vintage standard this season. Questions answered, Miller is better at QB, they use Cole Payton at times as well and he has been explosive. The secondary that was very much in question this year has shown some playmakers. So I expect this line to climb after open and that is where I might take a chance on UCA as I really do feel this UCA team has a strong roster, good at every level on O and D. It's just hard for me to see this as a blowout given how I view UCA. Ok ST only outrushed them by 26 yards and the ypp in that one was just 6.0-5.7. So I'm kind of comparing that to NDSU. I think this ends up being a really good game between two very good teams. One we know is very good, one, we, or I, think is.

I have Kennesaw down as a play against team this year. Had a push and a win against them last week. Chattanooga was up fairly comfortably and let Kennesaw come back to only win by 7. Now they get a better team, albeit at home vs Furman. Seeing this at 6.5? It is a sandwich spot for Furman off a game at South Carolina that they hung around in for a bit before losing big and have important SoCon game vs Mercer on deck. If I can get Furman to win this by a TD or less I'll take that.

I'm not sure I could actually play The Citadel, but the timing would be right in terms of perception and getting 'value' on the line. Off blowout loss to Campbell who just has way better players and Citadel is trying to find a new identity under a new staff and all. This line is high, 18?, and may go higher. But this series is a tight one. Last year Chattanooga did win by 10 (non cover) with only a 44 yardage edge, but every year before that - 3 pt game, 1 pt game, 1 pt game, 1 pt game, 6 pt game, 8 pt game, 8 pt game you have to go all the way back to 2014 to find a large margin of victory by either team in this game. Chattanooga has SoCon game at Samford on deck and Chattanooga missed the playoffs last year partially because they lost to Samford, and W Car in the last two weeks of the year. So not like they will take The Citadel for granted, but there are bigger games upcoming and Citadel looks like a complete pushover this season. Based on the series history alone, I may have to throw something on them at what I expect will be a 3 TD+ spread. This is the same Chattanooga D that allowed 517y and over 8ypp vs UNA week 1. Don't expect The Citadel to do that, but they will have their "perfect fit QB" for his second game of the year and maybe there is some improvement on O out of them in his second start?

Western Carolina at Eastern Kentucky is going to be a big one. EKU coaching legend Roy Kidd died this week. He is the all time winningest coach in EKU history. So this is going to be a game played in his honor, their home opener and the first home game since his passing. WCU might be a really good team. I would want to take them and the pts here but sometimes those off the field things like Kidd's passing makes me not want to go against that situation.

Granted, SIU has looked really good this year. Both offense and defense week 1 vs Austin Peay (and consider how AP played vs Tenn last week too). Then last week SIU's D won them that game as the O struggled. So they can win games with the O or the D or even if one of them is having an off night, certain games, the other can carry the team. Very impressed with SIU. But road fav at SEMO in rivalry game. Schools are like 50 miles apart and the game is called "war for the wheel". Some of us expected SEMO to compete at K St, instead they looked really overmatched. I don't want to hold that against them too much, but maybe I should? I mean this SEMO team is still pretty good, right? I wouldn't be surprised if they won at all even knowing how good SIU is played, I mean, wouldn't or couldn't SEMO have done the same thing to Austin Peay and NIU? I need to look at this more. Hard to assess SEMO because blowout loss to K St, blowout win vs Lindenwood.

Temple *can* win by that but but feels like a big ask. Warner's kid at QB hasn't been spectacular so far for them, certainly not as good as I was anticipating when I played their win total over. They are hosting Miami FL next week.

I have Princeton as a buy up to -21 although I don't think we see it. San Diego is a bad, bad team.

Also interested in seeing a total in Boise/NoDak. I've watched both games of both teams this year, and I think that one could be a track meet.

@EFC1878 Thank you on the Temple insight. Your comment on Princeton / San Diego does make me realize that it may not matter what Princeton does or does not have coming back like it normally would considering who they are playing. North Dakota has been very successful on O - easy vs Drake, but did it vs a step up last week vs NAU. Another step up here, but they are good enough to still get some vs a MW D and the North Dakota D definitely will let Boise move it up and down the field assuming Boise is right.

I'm still very fixated on William and Mary at Charleston Southern. W&M is 0-2 ATS, but they were covering most spreads at Campbell until Campbell scored late in that game and last week failed to cover 21 in their 23-6 win home vs Wofford and I think they found themselves kicking more FGs instead of TDs than one would've expected. 2 FGs from just outside the RZ, one from the 13 and a SOD at the 22. 382y and just 23 pts. Conceivably they could've had atleast 8 and probably 12 more pts and covered. Holding Wofford to 6, the W&M D did their part and should again today. So they are 0-2 ATS, but it's not difficult to envision them being 2-0 ATS. I think they get their first cover today. Do anyone actually think that Charleston Southern's 17-24 HT score at Clemson is some kind of indication that Charleston Southern is good? 14 of those pts came on just 1 yard of offense (pick-six and fumble recovery at the 1). And their week 1 opponent North Greenville, it's not like they are a good Dll team, they haven't had a winning record in years. I just see a big W&M win today as I'm sure the coaches and players know how they played last week isn't good enough and they are capable of more. Only have Maine on deck.

North Alabama deserves a look so long as they aren't running out of gas. That game at Tarleton was not a blowout the final score suggests. North Alabama is at Tennessee Tech today and UNA looks like a small road favorite. UNA's D should get back to being able to shut down a pedestrian O

Interested in this one as well. Tech is not good. Been shutout in the 2h both games this year.
