This season is eerily similar to last season as far as Indians-Tigs "races" go ... Let me tell you a little story, goes like this. Today is an anniversary of sorts. Last season on the morning of July 26, the Tribe stood 49-49, trailed the Tigers by 4 games. (Chicago actually led the division at that time, 1/2-game ahead of Detroit.) Indians beat Verlander and the Tigers that Thursday afternoon in Cleveland, 5-3, taking two of three in the series and drawing within three games of Detroit. The 50-49 Indians were obviously a flawed bunch screaming for help at the looming trade deadline. After that Thursday afternoon game against the Tigers, the Indians took to the road, got pounded, 11-0, on Friday night by last place Minnesota, got swept, did nothing at the trade deadline, and when the carnage was over, they had lost 11 in a row. Then they played win-a-couple-lose-a-couple for a week or so, and finally closed out August on a 6-game losing streak. At the end of August, they were 17.5 games out of first place. It was the worst August record in TEAM HISTORY, and this is a charter member of the American League that has played baseball since 1901! Now, I think this team's a little stouter, but short of maybe some relief help (which they sure could use), I think their team for the stretch run is on the field. So they're going to need a little magic and/or Tiger underachievement.
