Anybody around want to Discuss Early CFB thoughts?

Silkydiamonds

Imma sip this tea
These anybody around want to discuss early thoughts threads, VK & Dwight used to start. And I'll be the 1st to tell you that they help a LOT!! It's always good to see where everyone's heads are at & it allows us to start whittling away at the nut. Let's call it Cappers Spring Training for CFB.

So it's that time again, let's just start shooting the shit. Old guys, newbies whoever. Let the information exchange commence!

FOOTBALL IS BACK!!!

Silk - I'm always a procrastinator but one of my favorite things to do this far out from kickoff is to look for those big sandwich situations. Just games where teams have a down opponent between two higher profile games with rivals or quality opponents. Players and coaching staffs alike will tell you its tough to remained focused on the weaker opponent without a lookahead to the giant on the horizon while recovering from an emotional win or a tough loss from the first bookend in the sandwich. There can't be any byes involved in these spots for me as it gives teams time to recover/prepare.

So far here are my favorites from the SEC and ACC. The team to look at playing is listed in bold

9/21 Bama hosts Colorado State the week after traveling to A&M and before hosting Ole Miss. What to like: Bama has circled the A&M game for obvious reasons after losing to them last year. Ole Miss making noise and trying to turn themselves into a new SEC powerhouse. Focusing on CSU is going to be tough even for Saban's staff. Think it can't happen? See them winning 35-0 vs WKY in a Michigan/Arky sandwich last year as 38 point faves.

9/21 - A&M hosts SMU after the aforementioned Bama game and before heading to Arky. What to like: See above points about the Bama game. Two works for ya: June Jones. There might not be a guy in the NCAA I like getting the points more than June Jones. If the oddsmakers put up anything reasonable here, I'll be on SMU for a large play without even doing any homework.

9/26 - Auburn hosts FAU after @A&M and before @Arky. What to like: The dreaded home meat and road bread sandwich. FAU a gritty team and the two conference foes on the road make this worth a look.

11/9 - Georgia brings in App St after the Cocktail Party and before a trip to Auburn. Same home/road situation as above. App State no longer flying under anyone's radar but you've still got to look at this one based on scheduling.

11/9 - Boston College @NMSU after hosting VT and before hosting NCSt. Big travel situation to a different climate after facing two of their conference opponents at Chestnut Hill.

I'll try and do a few other conferences as I get some time, but chew on these and let me know your thoughts when you can.

Good stuff doggy. Right up my alley and a good way to prepare this far out.

Agree wit BAR, definitely like Doggy's approach this far out. Just identify spots/schedules first. Creates a map. Gonna dig into some schedule stuff too.

Oklahoma has one of those stretches as well:

9-28 @ Notre Dame
10-5 v. TCU
10-12 @ Texas (Dallas, Cotton Bowl)

Not a sandwich but a situation I'm interested in is SoCar/UGA WK2 after SoCar gets UNC showcase & UGA has early make or Break game vs a Clemson team I'm HIGH on.

Good stuff Smails and Silk - though I'm not sure TCU is sneaking past anyone anymore Judge. Three tough ones in a row for Stoops and the boys. I may just start with a half unit and chase til they lose, cause they aren't going 3-0 ATS in that run...

I still don't understand why Georgia state made tha jump to fbs. I honestly can't see Vegas lining Georgia state at bama week 6 close to correct.

Great stuff Doggy!!

Though I have to agree with the bolded. TCU opens up vs my Tigahs in JerryWorld August 31....nah, TCU is the deal. Regardless how dirty that program is as far as QBs and players betting on their own games....Dasher-esque for the underground CFB heads even

I better figure out what teams are in what conferences before I comment. Way behind right now .. so short on time and have to devote the time I have right now to mlb. I will chime in these threads once I am starting in on my pr for this season. Sorry but I can't be the early worm this year. Some suggestions ... might want to list out the coaching moves in a thread as they are significant ( especially to totals ) changes year over year in a majority of cases.

No doubt Georgia state is tha worst fbs team in 2013, i wanna see some thoughts on a line at bama.

I think it's higher than that, in tha mid to high 60s maybe. Michigan was -47 or so last year vs umass and umass is better than Georgia state. Bama opened -12 over Michigan and blew em out on neutral field also.

Both went 1-10 on tha season and yeah no doubt Georgia state is better, but also remember fsu woulda been 10+ point dog to bama on neutral. So at 62 u would think then roughly Georgia state would be -18 to savannah state? I think it's close to a wash an bama -70 wouldn't be that far from tha truth. Question is can they cover that kinda number?

If this gets lined anywhere in tha 50s I will lay it wit bama. I still got a lot of work to do once Steele comes out, but I'm more ahead at this time than last year

Well we know GaSt won't score unless a miracle happens but then they will pull that running clock shit they pulled in the Sav st game. You prolly closer than me on it cuz folks would lay the 70 without thinking 2x.

It might not open in tha 70s but it will be tha highest spread ever fbs vs fbs that I've seen or heard.

The more I think on this the more 70 becomes a reality. GaSt vs Tenny at Tenny was 46. Bama Tenny was 20. So umm yeah 70 is VERY real

Did a little bit of looking around and there seem to be much fewer sandwich situations on this schedule than years past. I see a lot of conferences that run their cupcake games in the first 2-3 weeks and then go entirely conference with byes scattered along the way. Still not done digging but I did see this one while reviewing the Independents.

BYU hosts MTSU 9/28 after hosting Utah, with @Utah St on deck. Hopefully they beat the balls off Utah and give us a ton of points vs the Raiders.

I was talking about the whole team, not just the head coach.

Are they ahead of Washington? I have Stanford and Oregon, some crap teams on the bottom, but the upper middle is messy. UCLA, Washington, OSU, USC in some jumbled up configuration. 3-7 is really tricky in this conference.

I like Stanford a LOT!! And the PAC 12 overall. Lotta good coaches & to n of talent

Now is a good time to get out in front if Sun Belt & MAC study. Those confs offers offer us bettors the better edge. Books are more sharp on the larger confs obviously. Let's attack the low hanging fruit

Saban is not going to cover a 70-point spread . . . EVER!!!

Has anyone bothered to read up on BC's offense? Rettig is decidedly not a fit for the Addazio/Urban offense, but horses told me that the magazine he picked up said they are sticking with a passing attack this season.

Thanks cudder. He still never really answered it, but I suppose in coachspeak he is admitting that he won't change things a whole lot quite yet.

Yep. I will have some TU tidbits, but I need help with the MAC for MAC Tues and such....

Phillip Sims ate his way out of school, according to my sources in the program. He refused to clean up his diet, was never in shape, and London pretty much pulled the plug on the tutors and other things that were helping him keep afloat. What a waste of talent....

CSU also coached by Jim McElwain. Saban won't run it up on his buddy. And surely McElwain has some knowledge on personnel and tendencies/weaknesses

He may have trouble stopping it from happening anyway .. without trying to. Not saying they cover a huge number but saying it will be an asswhooping when the backups are in.
