Following Purdue INT and punt, NW drove 11p 64y and 5p 65y for 14-0 lead. QB Green replaced Thorson and PU tied 14-14 thanks to big plays from Fr WR Rondale Moore. NW made a FG, PU missed a FG and PU threw another INT leading to a 3p 55y TD drive for 24-14 NW lead. PU went 10p 44y for a 38y FG, but later a third Sindelar INT set up NW for a 5p 30y TD drive to lead 31-17 HT. Blough replaced Sindelar, Green and Thorson would both continue to play. NW’s first 4 drives of the 2nd H didn’t cross midfield punting twice on 4th-and-1 and once on 4th-and-2. Meanwhile PU went on 2 long drives to cut the score to 31-27 early 4th qrt. NW was SOD at PU 34 with 9-1/2m left, but PU punted. NW was then able to kill the final 8m with a 3rd down and 4th down conversion, then facing 3rd-and-11 RB Larkin was stuffed, but PU’s Neal threw him down after the whistle for a personal foul 1st down allowing NW to kill the final 2m (PU no timeouts). PU edges 23-22 FD, 472-401 TY (6.6-5.1 ypp), 202-166 RY (8.1-4.0 ypc), 270-235 PY, 53-35% 3rd down. NU D 2 sacks, PU 0. Thorson 16-26-172-0-0, Green 7-11-63-0-0 (both combined just 15y rushing). Min got the ball back with 2:11 left and Annexstad was 2-of-3 incl a 33y TD pass for a 35-10 HT lead. Min’s first three drives of the 3rd totaled only 19y – one of those was actually a 6y FG “drive” following a blk’d punt…38-10. MSU ran 5 plays inside the U6 (incl another sack) and had to settle for a 32y FG. 7-6. Later Lewerke was sacked again on 1st down, this time losing a fumble at midfield (he may’ve been throwing it away, but was a bad decision as he just kinda dropped it). USU had to punt. Later USU threw INT leading to a 4p 42y MSU TD drive to lead 13-7. The teams then traded a pair of 70+y TD drives before HT for a 20-14 MSU lead. In the 3rd MSU went 10p 81y to open up a 27-14 lead. WKU could only gain about 57y on their 7 possessions in the first half as UW led 24-0. Taylor fumbled in the 3rd and did not carry after that. WKU did have their 2nd half drives end at the W8 (FG), W10 (INT), W14 (SOD), W1 (Fum), W49 (end game). UW edges 24-15 FD, 234-124 RY (6.0-3.6 ypc), 491-305 (7.0-4.8 ypp), 54-31% 3rd down. UM went for it again 4th-and-6 at the T34 and eventually got a 17y TD run to retake the lead 31-29 before a lengthy weather delay. UM would drive 90y off their own 8 (keyed by a 3rd-and-11 PI call on UT), but UM had to settle for a 18y FG…34-29. TexSt’s only score was a 51y pick-six.

Kent State debuted their “Flash Fast” O at Illinois and you would never think they were in their first ever game with a new coach and Illinois was the supposed experienced team in year 3 under Smith. ILL got on the board first with a 50y FG, then Kent went 7p 80y, 14p 60y and 8p 65y to lead 17-3 HT. ILL came to life in the 3rd with TD drives following Kent INT and SOD to tie 17-17. Big Ten Cont:

Penn St jumped out 7-0 on their opening drive, but 3 of their next 4 possessions would net just 9y. They were also SOD at the A31 in that span. App St ran a KO back and added a FG. Tied 10-10 HT. App St had just 77 1st H yards to PSU’s 190 yards. PSU O was clicking out of the half with long drives for 24-10 lead. App St got a big 22y QB run on 3rd down and later a 15y run on 3rd-and-17 leading to a 4th-and-2. QB Thomas had to leave the game and rFr QB entered with icewater in his veins and completed a pass to the P2, two plays later it was a 7 pt game. But PSU extended it to 14pts again with 11m left. App St O was rolling at this point though with 9p 80y TD drive – onside kick – 4p 53y TD drive to unbelievably tie with 6m left! PSU goes 3-and-out back-to-back and App St takes the lead 38-31 1:39 left! App St outscored PSU 28-7 4th qrt at this point. On the KO the PSU KR was in the EZ and like “I’m coming out, no I’m staying, I’m coming out, no I’m staying” then he runs out with App St players inside the 10 yard line, but he vindicates himself with a 52y return! PSU faces a 4th-and-2 at the A40, but McSorley calmly delivers a 10y pass for 1st down, 3 plays later he throws 15y TD pass to tie. With :20 left at the P38 App St misses a 56y FG on 4th down. We go to OT. Sanders touched the ball 4 straight plays 45-38. App St converts a 4th-and-1, but next play throw a INT in the EZ (only turnover of game). App St 451-434 (5.9-5.5 ypp) edge. NIU blk’d a punt on the first Iowa series of the game, but missed a 33y FG. In a game lacking of offense and sustained drives early, both teams were SOD just across midfield, both teams threw an INT and NIU missed another FG, but Iowa made theirs 3-0 HT. NIU was dominated in the 2nd half, failing to get a first down on their first 6 2nd half possessions while Iowa went 7p 58y, 5p 46y, 6p 26y and 3p 35y for TDs and also added a safety. NIU’s only score was garbage time (75 yard drive) with 2min left. Iowa edges 18-15 FD, 352-211 TY (4.8-3.4 ypp), 209-101 RY (4.4-2.8 ypc), 50-25% 3rd down. Iowa D got 5 sacks. Stanley 11-23-108-1-1. IU and FIU traded turnovers to open the game with FIU cashing their’s into a 7-0 lead (11p 66y). But FIU would net just 12y on their next 3 poss while IU went 7p 75y and 11p 68y plus a pick-six for the 21-7 lead. FIU was able to score mid-2nd qrt, but IU converted 4th-and-goal to retake the 14 pt lead into HT. In the 2nd half neither team could stop the other as both had two 70+y scoring drives…IU led 38-28 with 6m left. IU recovered an onside kick and begins at the F44. From the F15, IU runs straight ahead 4x making it to the F2 with :18 left, 4th-and-1. They run to the F1 ending the game there for the 10 pt win. Oklahoma St scored on their first 4 poss while Missouri St netted negative 3y on their first 5 poss. OSU did what they wanted 33-13 FD, 732-260 (8.0-4.0 ypp), 431-110 (8.0-3.0 ypc). Cornelius 25-35-300-5-1. MSt QB Huslig 11-28-150-2-0. OSU D got 5 sacks.

The only thing that could stop Oklahoma was perhaps themselves (or the occasional tackling ref)(did punt twice and missed FG). OU racked up over 400y (plus a punt ret TD) in the 1st H to FAU’s 130. 42-0 HT. It was 56-0 before FAU got on the board. 174 of FAU’s 324y came on the final 3 drives. Kyler Murray 9-11-209-2-0. Rodney Anderson 5-100-2TD. Sermon 9-69-TD. Marquise Brown 6-133-TD. FAU QB Chris Robinson 15-26-157-0-0. Singletary 18-69-TD.

TCU QB Shawn Robinson only played the first half in his second career start, he was 17-24-182-3-0, 2 rushes for 57y. TCU scored on their first 6 drives of the game. The revamped OL ran for 235 (5.6) vs the overmatched opponent. 30-9 FD edge for Frog and 499-185 TY (6.7-3.6). Southern did throw two 1st H INTs in TCU territory.

WVU took their opening drive to the T11 with a 1st down, but settled for 26y FG. 3-0. UT moved the ball across midfield, but punted and WVU quickly went up 10-0. UT did get something going for a 17p 78y 4th-and-goal TD pass…10-7. With 2m left in the half, WVU drove off their own 10 (aided by some UT penalties) for a 13-7 HT lead. Lengthy weather delay. Grier hit nice passes, while UT went 3-and-out and WVU built a 27-7 lead. WVU scored 2 of the 3 final TDs of the game. Keeping more potential pts off the board, UT was SOD at the W2 and WVU fumbled at the T37. WVU edges 26-19 FD, 547-301 TY (9.0-4.8 ypp), 55-36 3rd down % (UT 2-for-3 4th down). Vols did outrush ‘Eers 129-118 (3.4-4.4). Grier 25-34-429-5-0. Sills 7-140-2TD, Jennings 6-113-TD. Guarantano played whole way 19-25-172-1-0. Leading rusher for WVU, Pettaway had just 56y on 9att. UT’s Jordan 20-118-TD.

Kansas and Nicholls played an even 1st H with each team getting TD and FG drives and then nothing else. 10-10 HT (KU FG was 54y, Nich was 28y). Both Ds were stingy in the 2nd H. Nicholls took a 17-10 lead, but their ST mistakes kept KU alive. KU got a safety on a Nicholls punt and late in the 4th Nicholls fumbled a punt at their own 10 setting up KU for the TD (2pt good). 20-17 Jayhawks. After a sack and short completion, Nicholls would’ve had 3rd-and16 upcoming, but KU facemasked the QB bailing them out. With :47 left Nicholls got a 43y FG to force OT. KU had to settle for a FG on their OT poss and after a KU D PI call, Nicholls scored the winning TD 2 plays later. Nicholls edges 17-14 FD, 329-255 TY (4.4-3.6 ypp), 187-56 RY (3.7-1.8 ypc). Nicholls D got 6 sacks (KU D just 1). Herbert did have 12-61 (5.1) rushing. Bender 19-35-187-2-0. Nicholls QB Fourcade 12-24-142-0-0, Nicholls RB 28-123-TD.

Kansas State was in trouble, trailing 12-24. KSt could only muster 4 FGs kicked from the 7, 5, 21 and 27 yard lines, while South Dakota benefited from a KSt fum (7y “drive” for FG) and also a 25y pick-six. KSt moved the ball well early, but stalled on those FG drives, after their pick-six KSt O was nonexistent netting just 43y on their next 5 poss. South Dakota missed a 47y FG off the crossbar and was SOD at the K32. On this day, Isiah Zuber was not going to lose. Zuber revived KSt with an 85y punt ret TD early 4th qrt. 24-19 SD led. Later in the 4th Zuber to the rescue again, once converting 3rd-and-long and also catching a 3rd down TD pass to give KST the lead 27-24. Killing the clock KSt did give SD one final chance, Barnes fumbled at the S15 with under 1m left (2nd lost fumble for Barnes). SD drove to the K34, but their 51y FG was short as time expired. SD out FD’d KSt 21-19, but yardage edges to KSt 408-334 TY (5.4-4.3 ypp), 256-77 RY (5.4-3.7), 45-25 3rd down %. SD D did get 3 sacks (KSt D 1). Delton 5-14-91-0-1, 78 rushing. Thompson 8-14-61-1-1, 58 rushing. Barnes 21-103. Zuber 5-68-TD.

Baylor scored on 3 of their first 4 poss and 7 of their first 9, rotating QBs while they did so, building a 45-20 lead. Brewer 8-15-138-0-1, 15 rushing and NCSt transfer McClendon 10-13-173-2-0. The running game got going with Lovett 12-115-3TD, Hasty 10-102-2TD. Mims led the receivers 3-80 and Chris Platt returned to action after inj LY with 3-40. BU did rack up 606 TY (9.5 ypp), but Abilene Christian was able to get 466 (7.0) with 220 rushing (8.1) (boosted by 45 and 75y runs). Not sure how good Abilene O might be, but some of these numbers out of them must be concerned for Baylor.

ACC

Wake Forest started Tr Fr QB Sam Hartman and they played it close to the vest early. They loosened the leash some on the 3rd poss then opened it up and he proved himself leading a 14p 85y drive (missed 23y FG), 14p 80y TD drive. He also threw an INT, but it is unclear if WR Dortch or Hartman was at fault as they each seemed to blame eachother. WF led 7-0 at HT largely because Tulane couldn’t take advantage of their opportunities. TU punted 5x from WF territory, 3x from the 35-38. TU QB Banks connected on a 52y TD pass on 3rd-and-15 to tie 7-7. WF responded with a FG. 10-7. Punts. Banks again hit a deep downfield throw, 74y and a 14-10 lead late 3rd qrt. WF came right back 9p 75y to retake a 17-14 lead. TU again punted from the WF 39, but Hartman drove WF off their goal line eventually getting to the T17 with a first down, but under pressure he paniced and threw a underhand INT (knee may’ve been down) trying to avoid a sack. Banks was under constant pressure all night and the conventional TU run game was consistently stuffed by WF. TU did drive 13p 61y incl a 4th and 11 15y rush by Banks. But with 4m left TU had to settle for a 39y FG and 17-17 tie. TU D forced a 3-and-out, but TU punted for the 7th time from WF territory. In OT TU’s poss was disaster being forced to go for a 4th-and-25 from the 40 (big hands to the face 15y penalty put them behind 8 ball on first play). WF ran it 7x and won 23-17. WF edges 32-20 FD, 532-436 TY (5.7-5.5 ypp), 154-155 RY (3.6-3.7 ypc), 53-37% 3rd down. WF D got 3 sacks. Hartman 31-51-378-2-2, leading rusher 67y. Banks 18-37-281-2-0, leading rusher 38y.

Syracuse had no trouble jumping out to a 34-7 HT lead on WMich. Cuse 336-190 1st H yard edge. But Dino Babers decided to take the oft injured Duney out before the final series of the first half believing the game was in the bag and DeVito could take over from here. But DeVito could only lead 60-some yards on 5 poss and zero pts all while WM was HUGE plays and quick scores. At 34-28 Babers put Duney back in. Dungey led 3 straight TD drives before being SOD 4th-and-goal at the 1 (Babers actually acted like he didn’t want to score again top the 60pt plateau (WM HC Lester was a Babers and Cuse assistant). Cuse edges 26-24 FD, 334-242 RY (5.4-8.6 ypc), but WM had 621-560 TY (9.7-6.4 ypp) and 379-226 PY edges. WM just 20% 3rd down, Cuse 41% with 2 of 3 4th down. Dungey 7-17-184-2-0, leading rusher 15-200-TD. WR Custis is going to be a stud this year 6-168-2TD. Wassink 19-36-379-3-2, just 14y rushing. Bellamy 11-120-2TD. WM WR Eskridge 8-240-2TD.

Duke jumped out 17-0 lead with Army’s first 3 poss being fum at A32, FG miss, fum at D29. Duke had 217-151 1st H yard edge. Duke fum their opening 2nd H poss and Army drove 11p 55y to get on the board as Army’s O got it going better in the 2nd H at one point cutting it to a 10 pt game, but their D still couldn’t stop Jones and Co. Army missed a second FG in the 4th and Duke added a late FG for the final pts. Army fumbled 5x, losing 2. Duke was only 2-of-9 3rd down. Army 5-of-14, but they converted 4-of-4 4th down. FD nearly even (19-18), PY even (197), RY Duke led 184-168 (5.3-3.6). Jones 13-17-197-1-0, #2 rusher 10-49y. Duke WRs Rahming 5-44, Young 4-114-TD. Hopkins 10-21-197-1-0, #2 rusher 16-37. Army WR had 3-92-TD.

NCSt got the JMU 16 to open, but fumbled. JMU went 8p 68y to lead 7-0. NCSt would score the next 17 pts to lead 17-7 HT. JMU did lose a fum at the N10. NCSt went punt, missed FG and punt on their first three 2nd H poss while JMU kicked a pair of FGs from the N3. 17-13. NCSt then converted 3rd down 3x and put the game away 24-13 with 1m left. BC scored TDs on 4 of their first 5 poss, all with long drives. UMass did score once early, but mostly struggled to sustain drives. They were SOD at their own 45, fum at B3 (a long KO ret took UMass to B17) and inexplicably threw an INT in the waning seconds of the 1st H which was ret 59y for a time expiring pick-six. BC led 48-7 HT. UMass couldn’t get anything going on their first 4 poss of the 2nd H, but did score two late TDs on 10p 59 and 8p 44y drives to close the game. BC didn’t try very hard on O in the 2nd H. BC edges 31-18 FD, 598-315 (6.9-4.6 ypp), 272-66 RY (4.5-1.9 ypc). Brown 15-21-279-4-0, only 1 rush att. Dillon 20-98. 12 BC receivers caught a ball. Here are the independents, I'll see what I can get up tomorrow. I usually defer SEC to gps_3's excellent thread.

Independents

Notre Dame went 7p 75y and 7p 96y to go up 14-0. On a few of the big plays Michigan defenders were in position to make critical plays, but ND players won those battles. UM had a 1st-and-10 at the N29 ,but had to punt after a sack, later UM had a 1st-and-goal at the 5, but again went backwards and had to settle for a 28y FG. 14-3 Irish. ND had a 15p 75y drive where Michigan penalties twice gave ND first downs after they had been stopped on 3rd down. 21-3…UM did answer with a KO ret TD…21-10 HT. UM drove to the N16 with a 1st down, but 3 straight incompletions and a bad hold on a FGA netted zero pts. UM D got an INT, but UM was SOD at N45. ND had a TD pass called back and had to settle for a 48y FG near the end of the 3rd. 24-10. Next two UM drives ended in INT and SOD. UM scored their first O TD with 2m left in the game…24-17. UM kicked deep, forced a 3-and-out, but such as it happened all night ND harassed UM QBs with 6 qbh and 3 sacks, and on this final drive Patterson under heavy pressure was sacked/fumbled to end the game. ND only had about 60y in the 2nd H, as a result Mich actually had a slight 307-302 TY (4.4-4.4 ypp) edge. ND rushed for 132-58 (2.8-1.8). Wimbush 12-22-170-1-1 and led in rushing with 19-59y. Patterson 20-30-227-0-1. Higdon led with 21-72 rushing. Chase Winovich 6 tkl, 2.5 tfl, 1 sack and 2 qbh.

BYU trailed 7-10 HT (UA had FG blk’d and kicked one from the B6), but Cougs scored 21 unanswered in the 3rd qrt while UA went 3-and-out on consecutive possessions (4 three-and-outs on the night). 28-10 BYU. UA scored 2 TDs in the 4th qrt (2pt no good on the last one)…28-23. UA kicked off deep with 2 TOs, but BYU ran 6x and killed the final 88 seconds. Khalil Tate did not look to run as much as 2017, although part of that may’ve been BYU’s scheme as well. Tate had just 14y on 8att. FD even, BYU with a 392-326 TY (5.5-4.7 ypp) edge. Mangum 18-28-209-1-0. Canada 24-98-3TD, 2rec 29y. Tate 17-34-197-1-0.

Liberty won their first game as an FBS member in dominant fashion over Old Dominion. They jumped out 14-0, ODU had a fake punt stuffed from their own 34 and had a TD overturned by replay settling for a FG, scored a TD and also missed 38y and 40y FGs in the first half. ODU QB Williams had a stretch of 4 straight incompletions and HC Wilder put in Larussa, but said at HT he just wanted to sit Williams down to “calm him down”. Williams stated the 3rd qrt. 14-10 HT. ODU however could not gain any ground in the 3rd qrt and as the 4th qrt began Liberty stepped on the gas, up 24-10 now they got chunk plays quickly going 5p 94y to lead 31-10. Williams was just 1-of-4 passing on the next poss with a 4th down incompletion and Liberty was back in the EZ 2p 25y later. 38-10. Williams later fumbled setting up Liberty for another short 3p 22y TD. Liberty edges 29-18 FD, 591-301 TY (7.9-4.1 ypp), 38-19% 3rd down conv. Liberty was only +1 TO. Calvert 25-36-345-4-0. Easier to be genius when your qb is Greg Ward and you coach in the AAC.

That being said Tua prolly makes at least 20 teams, top 5ish

Woke up early...

UCF scored on 4 of their 5 1st H poss with 60-90y TD drives and led 28-10 HT. UC was able to move the ball at times, but would lose fum at UCF39 and INT at UCF 25. TU D did a better job after the 1st qrt and held Nova in check until the 4th. TU took a 17-13 lead, then after an INT missed a 29y FG early 4th. Nova got a key play of the game on a 10p 80y TD drive they converted a 4th-and-9 with a 30y TD pass mid 4th qrt to lead 19-17 (xpt blk’d). Houston opened with a FG, but the UH O was underwhelming with 4 straight 3-and-outs including a 4p drive off a Rice INT ending with a 35y FG miss. Rice got 52y and 29y plays on their way to a 7-3 lead. UH was then SOD at H47 setting Rice up for 44y FG…10-3 Owls. UH did convert 3rd down 2x and appeared to tie with a TD, but xpt no good. 10-9. UH then muffed a punt handing Rice the ball at the H8…17-9 Owls. UH quickly went 5p 75y and hit a 40y TD pass with 2pter to tie 17-17. Central Arkansas came in ranked 15th and it was a close game with Tulsa. CA led 27-24 in the 4th after a fum ret TD. UT went 7p 75y to retake the lead 31-27, then CA fumbled the ensuing KO and UT got a 7y TD “drive” for a 38-27 win (CA punted next poss and UT killed the final 6m). Earlier UT fumbled a KO of their own setting up CA at the 10, but CA fumbled through EZ for TB. UT had 25-16 FD, 470-247 TY (5.4-4.3 yppc), 274-82 RY (4.3-2.6 ypc). UCLA got on the board following a sack/fumble leading to a 4p 13y ‘drive’. 7-0. UC Fr QB Desmond Riddler replaced Moore in the 1st qrt and he QB’d the rest of the game. He led UC to a 14p 75y TD drive to trail 7-10 (converted 4th-and-1 along the way). Speight was then INT’d leading to a short UC TD drive and a 14-10 Bearcat lead. Speight was then knocked out of the game and UC added a FG before HT. 17-10. UCLA tied it on a 74y TD run. 17-17. After trading punts, UCLA went for it on 4th-and-4 at the UC48, but it was incomplete. In the 4th UC was SOD on their own 4th-and-4 call. UCLA had poor field position throughout the 2nd H and a key play was when QB Thomson-Robins fumbled on a sack that resulted in a safety. 19-17. Again with Kelly saying “I thought we needed a spark”, UCLA went for it this time at their own 36 4th-and-1, but the pass was incomplete. 5-1/2m left. UC ran 7x, converted 4th-and-2 at the 12, then faced 4th down again with under 2m left. After a TO UC lined up for a FG 4th-and-goal from the 2, but UCLA had 12 men on the field, and now 4th-and-goal at the 1, UC chose to go for it resulting in a TD run making it a two score game. UC D had 5 sacks, UCLA D 4. UC DT Cortez Broughton had 3.5 sacks and 4.5 tfl.

UAB defense only allowed Savannah State to cross midfield once, the second to last possession of the game. Technically SavSt started a drive at the UAB28 in the 1st qrt because of a fumbled punt, but SavSt lost 16 yards on that poss and punted from midfield. It was just 28-0 HT as UAB O was not as dominant as their D. In the 1st H UAB’s offense had offense had TD, INT, Fum punt, three-and-out punt, punt, D got pick-six, O TD, O TD. For the game UAB had 36-12 FD and 548-178 TY (6.6-3.2 ypp). SavSt was 1-17-23-0-2 passing!

Marshall dominated early. Miami did not cross midfield until the 2nd qrt gaining only 23y on their first two poss and at one pt Mar had a 9-1 FD edge. Mar led 14-0. Mia was SOD at Mar29, but then forced two Mar punts and Mia went 10p 76y to trail 7-14. Mar extended to a 21-7 HT lead. Mia’s O struggled again to open the 3rd qrt with two 3-and-outs, and Mar went 8p 90y for a 28-7 lead. Mia did find some O from here, going 6p 72y for TD and then was SOD after a 9p 69y drive at the Mar2. But they came back down with a 3p 61y TD drive to make it a 7pt game. After exchanging punts, Mar got a big return to the Mia 11 and scored 1 play later to go back up 35-21. Mia did score with 4m left to trail by 7 again and Mar made a big mistake by taking the KO out of the EZ and being tackled at the 2! Mia had all 3 TOs and forced a 3-and-out punt starting their would-be tying drive near midfield with 2-1/2m left. A holding call backed them up and then a 4th-and-15 pass was incomplete. FD 24-23 and TY 444-443 even. Mar DL Ryan Bee DNP. Mia went for 4th down 5x only converting 2. Mar Fr QB Green 24-37-272-2-0. RBs Davis and King comb 27-144-TD. Brady 9rec-116-2TD. LaTech D was doing their job holding SBama to 45y on their first 5 poss. LT O was was inconsistent, but led 13-0 early (missed xpt) until a short punt from the LT gave SB some life at the LT 35 mid 2nd qrt. 3 plays later it was 13-7. SB recovered an onside kick but LT D forced a fum. LT took a 20-7 lead into HT. LT had a 1st-and-goal at the SB10, but could not get past the 6 and settled for a 23y FG. 23-7. SB would convert 4th-and-1 2x on their way to a 15p 67y TD drive (2pt no good). 23-13. After a LT punt, the next 4 drives ended in turnovers (2 apiece). SB was at their own 34 early 4th and they went 10p 66y to make it a 23-20 game. LT drove for a TD and some breathing room 30-20 2m left. SB backup QB broke a 59y run on 4th-and-2 leading to a TD, xpt blk’d. 30-26, the onside kick went OOB and LT took knees. LT 22-15 FD and 440-308 TY (5.7-4.7 ypp), 231-217 RY (4.8-5.0 ypc). SMU went 3-and-out on six of their first eight poss, the two they didn’t was 1p throwing an INT and the other a 6p 14y drive. NT edges 34-9 FD, 529-256 TY (5.6-6.0) 68-4 RY (1.6-.2 ypc). Northern Arizona got their first win over an FBS program since 2012 in the 30-10 win at UTEP, few teams have been so excited to beat the Miners. NAU led 17-0 before UTEP scored and the Lumberjacks lost a starting LG and RB to injury early in the game and starting CB to ejection in the 2nd qrt, but it didn’t matter. Metz started the game for UTEP, but threw an INT on the opening poss and never came back in. Locksley QB’d the game until late 4th qrt. FD were even 14-15, but NAU had 318-229 TY (5.1-3.4 ypp), 107-102 RY (3.0-2.8 ypc), 211-127 PY edges. NAU D got 5 sacks.

Central Connecticut drove for a FGA on their opening drive, but missed. They would not cross midfield again until the 3rd qrt. Ball St had a FG blk’d, but scored 3 TDs to lead 21-0. BSU was driving in the final seconds of the 1st H, they had two shots from the C10 with :07 left, CC was called for D PI and with :03 left instead of kicking the FG, they went for it from the C2 with :03 left and were stopped. 21-0 HT. BSU received the 2nd H KO and after not taking sure pts to end the half, BSU gave further evidence of not respecting their opponent when they choose to fake a punt on their own 27 on 4th-and-8. It could’ve swung momentum to CC, but fortunately for BSU, it was just CC and they were SOD at the B17 4 plays later. BSU started pulling starters late 3rd leading 28-0. BSU edges 31-16 FD, 652-291 TY (7.8-4.4 ypp), 316-174 RY (6.6-4.6 ypc), 69-27% 3rd down. Neal 23-30-259-2-0, 37y rushing with TD. 12 rec caught a pass. 4 RBs had over 40y.

Returning most of their quality core players the only question for Eastern Michigan was who was going to replace Brogan Roback. Tyler Wiegers (Iowa transfer) started and went 18-21-238-2-0, 19y rushing. Although Monmoth held EM’s top two RBs Vann and Eriksen each under 4.0ypc. Monmoth O couldn’t do much and EM scored on their first 4 poss and led 30-3 HT. EM 473-386 TY (7.2-4.9 ypp).

Howard led 10-0 before OU missed a FG then made one near the end of the 1st qrt. 10-3. Solich thought starting QB Rourke was “off” and had planned to play Quinton Maxwell anyway. Maxwell went in the 2nd qrt and did not come out. Maxwell did not have immediate success and How added to their lead 16-3 (xpt blk’d). How may’ve been on their way to more pts when OU forced a fum at the O22 and Maxwell and Ouellette got them going for their first TD. 16-10. With some good field position off a punt exchange How went 2p 35y to lead 22-10 (2 pt no good) with 2m left 1st H. Maxwell engineered a 2m drive 7p 75y making it 22-17 HT. San Jose St’s best QB was the third off the bench in their 38-44 loss to UC Davis. UCD did lead 7-0, but SJ took 14-7 lead thanks to an INT return (1y TD “drive”) and 7p 66y drive. UCD scored 3 straight TDs to lead 28-14 2nd qrt and they would never trail again. Aaron came into the game in the 3rd down 16 and O improved, getting to within 6, trailing 37-31, but SJ D couldn’t hold…44-31 and SJ fumbled at the UCD8 before SJ scored a final TD with 1-1/2m left, UCD recovered the onside kick. Air Force opened with a TD, then got a pick-six to lead 14-0. A bad punt snap set up SB deep in AF terr, but they were SOD. A big punt ret had SB back in AF terr, but they missed a FG. Those were their only scoring chances courtesy of the AF ST, otherwise the AF D completely shut down the SB O. AF had 23-4 FD, 362-75 TY (4.3-1.5 ypp) edges. AF was 5-of-6 on 4th down and owned a 40-20 min TOP.

Boise led 7-0, Troy punted, but Boise fumbled and Troy recovered and drove 5p 52y to tie. Rypien hit a 53y pass on 3rd-and-10 and the rout was on scoring 35 unanswered into the 3rd qrt (incl a 55y fum ret TD). Troy got some garbage yards in the 2nd H while Boise put the O away in the 4th (still scored 2 4th qrt TDs – another fum ret TD and 2p 48y TD). Boise 416-379 TY (7.3-4.9 ypp). Boise D had 5 sacks. Rypien 20-28-305-4-0, 14y rushing. Mattison 14-56-TD. Modster 7rec-167-2TD. Troy played 2 QBs, combined 24-34-255-1-1.

New Mexico completed 7 passes over 30 yards, last season they completed 10 30+ yarders all season. Tuioti threw for career high 13-21-327-4-1 with 54y rushing + TD. NM led 28-7 end of 1st qrt and 35-16 HT. NM scored 3 straight to pull away in the 3rd. In a 62-30 game it might be expected the yardage gap to be wider, but NM had just 680-566 TY (7.5-7.8 ypp) edge. IW did have 78y and 83y 4th qrt TD drives and earlier they were either SOD or turned it over 3x in NM terr and also kicked a FG from the N11.

Fresno scored TDs on 2 blk’d FG returns, a pick-six TD and also had a 4y “drive” for a FG after an INT and a 5y “drive” for TD after a fum recovery…essentially 31 pts credited to ST and D. FS 486-307 TY (6.7-4.7 ypp). 62-23% 3rd down conv. McMaryion 19-26-207-0-0. 5 RBs had 35+ RY.

Navy gained just 27y on their first 3 poss, while Hawaii jumped out to a 28-0 lead incl a blk’d punt TD return. UH scored on every poss of the first half and led 38-14 HT. Navy came out in the 3rd with a TD drive, then a short TD drive following a UH fumble…38-28. A strange and critical moment happened on 3rd down, Perry dropped back to pass on 3rd and 13, but most of the Navy players stopped, UH defenders rushed in on a standing still Perry who looked around for the refs to stop the play as he says he heard a whistle. No whistle could be heard on the replay, but it ended up being an 8y loss for Navy and their small chance at a comeback ended and UH tacked on another score on the ensuing drive. UH’s 436 passing yards allowed were the 3rd most allowed by Navy under Coach Ken. UH 522-411 TY (7.5-6.6 ypp) edge. McDonald 30-41-428-6-0. UH RB Holly had 17-82-TD. Ursua 10-167-2TD, Ward 6-161-2TD. Byrd 11-90-2TD. If you didn’t know any better you’d think it was Bess, Grice-Mullen and Rivers out there. Perry was just 1 of 3-19y passing, but 17-108-TD rushing. Navy QBs combined 6-13-85-1-0, but Mids ran for 49-326-5TD (6.7). UH LB Jahlani Tavai ret’d from suspension to lead Warriors in tkls.

Sun Belt, maybe I will get PAC12 tonight.

Kennesaw led 7-0 then forced a fumble to stop a Georgia State drive at the K15. KSU drove 15p 85y with a 4th down conv to make it 14-0 2nd qrt. GSU did make it 14-7 with a long drive. With under 1minute left in the half, KSU threw an INT and GSU drove to the K6 with :03 left. They passed on the FG and thew for the EZ getting a time expiring TD to tie 14-14 at HT. KSU added 32 and 24y FGs and it was 20-14 when GSU kicked a 35y FG early 4th. 20-17 KSU had a first down at the G15, but fumbled. GSU was SOD. KSU went for a 4th-and-9 at the G35, but only gained 8 yards giving GSU life with 2m left. GSU drove 9p 73y aided by two KSU penalties for a TD with :41 left in the game and KSU couldn’t do anything with their final poss. Kennesaw had a 382-315 TY edge (5.5-4.8 ypp).

SE LA and ULM was a fun one. Each team scored on 3 of their first 4 poss (SELa had a 18y TD “drive” after INT). SELa missed a FG, ULM fumbled. It was 21-16 SELa at HT. ULM took lead on a 79y TD pass. 23-21. ULM then got a 50y INT ret but would miss a 37y FG. ULM later had 1st-and-goal at the S8, but had to settle for a 28y FG. 26-21. SELa made a FG…26-24, then ULM missed another FG. A 34y TD pass with 8m left gave SELa the lead again 31-26. It didn’t look good when ULM was SOD at the S28 with under 4m left. SELa had a penalty then a sack forced a punt with 2m left. Caleb Evans hit 5-of-6 and then ran 11y for the go-ahead TD, 2pt good with :37 left….34-31. From their own 20, with no timeouts, SELa gained 10 and 8 yards then connected on a 24 yard pass with :19 left. After clocking the ball, they then hit a 27y pass down the sideline and got out of bounds with :13 left at the ULM16! Instead of trying for the win, from the 16 with :13, they run the QB to the middle of the field (losing 4y) to center the ball for a potential game tying FG….which was blk’d! ULM edges 31-22 FD, 208-72, 554-437 TY (5.8-6.7 ypp), RY (4.8-3.1 ypc), 61-30% 3rd down. ULM D got 3 sacks. Each team missed 2 FGs. ULM’s two made FGs were from the 22 and 28. Evans 35-53-346-2-1, #2 rusher 13-62 + TD. Gore 21-104-TD. WRs Green and Turner 7rec each for 99 and 95y a piece. SELa had a dude make 20 tackles!

Grambling scored the first and last pts of the game, opening 3-0, but it was 35-10 ULL HT…and 49-10 before Grambling scored a late one. 27-15 FD, 315-147, 556-306 TY (7.6-4.7 ypp), RY (7.3-4.1 ypc), 70-38% 3rd down. ULL D got 4 sacks. Nunez 19-22-184-2-0, 21y rushing with TD. Ragas 13-142-TD (career high).

South Carolina St went 3-and-out on the first 3 possessions, lost a fumble and an INT, but Georgia Southern led just 16-0 at HT (2pt no good on first TD, also kicked 19y FG). GaSo scored out of the half 23-0. SCSt had one good drive all night resulting in a TD making it a 23-6 game in the 4th qrt. GaSo would score on their third straight 60+y drive to make it 37-6 F. Werts played deep into the 4th qrt and guided the final covering TD drive with just 4m left. FD 19-10, 348-151 TY (5.8-2.9 ypp), 319-120 RY (6.0-2.9 ypc). SCSt outpassed them 31y (20% compl) to 29y (71% compl). GaSo D got 3 sacks.

Arkansas St QB Justice Hansen passed for school record 6 TDs vs SEMO. ASU converted a 4th down on their way to an opening TD, 7-0 end of 1st qrt, then Hansen threw an INT at the S10 leading to a SEMO TD. 7-7. ASU quickly went back on top 14-7, but SEMO tied on a 67y TD run. 14-14. ASU scored TD and missed a FG…21-14 HT. A 57y TD pass out of the break made it 28-14 and the rout was on with ASU scoring 4 3rd qrt TDs. 48-14 before SEMO got a 4th qrt TD. ASU edges 30-14 FD, 685-285 TY (8.7-4.8 ypp), 188-122 RY (4.8-3.9 ypc). 50-14% 3rd down. ASU D 3 sacks. Hansen 26-36-423-6-1. 11 receivers caught 2+ passes.

PAC 12

Stanford missed a FG on their opening drive, afterwards the O struggled to move the ball. Their next 4 drives did not cross midfield. SDSt scored a TD on a 8p 92y drive where Washington was given the ball 7x getting consistent yards and big plays (half his 158y on the night came on this drive). Love was bottled up all night, having just 9y on 14 att at one point. After downing a punt at the 1, Stan sacked Chapman for a safety. Later Costello threw a INT, but Stan WR hustled to chase the Aztec down and stripped the ball giving it back to Stan allowing Costello hit Whiteside for a 38y TD right before HT. 9-7. SDSt was called for D PI twice and Whiteside had his second TD catch. 16-7. SDSt kicked a 30y FG, then Whiteside got his 3rd TD, this one an 80 yarder on 3rd-and-15, 2pt good, to who else? Whiteside. 23-10. The 4th qrt started with Washington being SOD at the Stan32, Aztecs would never threaten to score again…Stan scored their final TD then killed the last 7-1/2 minutes of the game. Shaw praised Love’s pass blocking and blitz pickups and he did catch 3 passes (had 6 all of last season). SDSt was blitzing all the time and often had 9 and 10 guys in the box with blitzers crashing the line at the snap. Stan edges 19-11 FD, 382-263 TY (6.5-5.1 ypp), 47-31% 3rd down. Stan D did record 5 sacks (SDSt just 1). SDSt had 150-50 RY (4.1-1.8 ypc) RY advantage. Costello 21-31-332-4-1. Love 18-29. Whiteside 6-226-3TD. Chapman 10-15-113-0-0. Washington 24-158-TD.

Utah held Weber St to just 59y, the third lowest yardage allowed in Ute history. Despite that Weber led 10-0! Utah fumbled a punt, Weber “drove” 7p 15y for a 42y FG. 3-0. Next play after the KO, Weber St got a 30y INT return to the U2, next play it was 10-0. The Weber O would only be in Utah territory once the rest of the game, which was because of another Utah fumble. Utes scored the next 17 and missed a FG and got going after the break in the 41-10 win. Utes 25-3 FD, 587-59 TY (7.6-1.1 ypp). Utah was just 5-of-14 on 3rd down (2-of-3 4th down). Utah D 3 sacks. Huntley 25-40-279-4-1, 1 net rushing yard. Moss 16-150. Covey 7rec-79, 1 rush-38y.

Colorado came out of the gates fast scoring TDs on 4 of their first 5 possessions (75, 87, 75, 48y drives). CSU was no match with punts on 4 of their first 6 poss (other poss were TD and INT, then FG on the 7th). 28-10 HT. 17 unanswered 3rd qrt pts by CU turned it into a blowout. TY 596-284 (9.2-3.7 ypp). CU D got 9 TFL and 3 sacks (CSU D 0 sacks). Montez 22-25-338-4-1, 34y rushing w/ TD. Shenault 11rec-211-TD. McMillian 10-103-TD. Carta-Samuels 18-33-176-1-1. Collin Hill did attempt 4 passes. Preston Williams caught just 6rec-49.

Wyoming went three-and-out on their first 3 poss while Washington State kicked a 24y FG, 63y TD drive (aided by a WYO personal foul on 4th down). 10-0. WYO did get a safety off a bad punt snap. 10-2. WYO then recovered a fum at the WSt30 leading to a TD. 10-9. WYO then got an INT at the WSt46 eventually resulting in a 16-13 WYO lead which was the HT score. WSt avoided those mistakes in the 2nd H and scored TDs on 4 of their 5 poss, while WYO could only sustain one drive for a FG, otherwise WYO O in the 2nd H did not advance further than their own 36. 24-15 FD, 394-206 TY (5.1-3.5 ypp) for WSt. WSt D got 3 sacks (WYO 0). Both teams struggled on 3rd down 20%. Minshew 38-57-319-3-1. RB Williams 16-82-TD. WSt top 3 rec comb’d 20rec-203-TD. Vander Waal 8-20-67-0-1 RB Evans 18-89-TD.

UNC – Cal was a defensive struggle (or struggling offense). UNC’s 1st H O amounted to 31 plays for 38 yards! Cal got a 23y TD Drive after an INT, a pick-six and a 35y FG to lead 17-0 HT. UNC partially blk’d a Cal FGA, then drove for their own FG. 17-3. A 10p 79y TD drive for Cal made it 24-3 end of 3rd. UNC had a 92y drive, converted 4th down twice on their way to a TD, then had a good onside kick attempt, but were called for “illegal batting”. 24-10. Cal punted with 4m left. UNC drove 85y for a TD with a minute left and appeared to recover the onside kick, but upon review a UNC player made contact with a Cal player just barely before the ball went 10 yards. Call killed the clock. With the 4th qrt drives UNC actually finished with a 301-279 (4.1-3.4 ypp) TY edge. UNC D recorded 10 TFL and 4 sacks (Cal D 2 TFL and 0 sacks). Both teams were ony 23.5% on 3rd down. Bowers 8-17-56-0-0, Garbers 7-13-54-1-0. Laird 29-95-TD. Elliot 15-35-137-1-4, leading rusher 10-58y. Malik Carney led with 8tkl, 3tfl and 2 sacks, 1 qbh.

UNLV fumbled on their very first play and USC got a free 46y FG out of it (USC only gained 1 yard after the fumble). 3-0. Later in the 1st JT Daniels was 5-of-6-55y leading them to a 38y FG. 6-0. UNLV RB Thomas broke free for a 75y TD run. 7-6. USC opened the 2nd qrt with a 29y FG off a 81y drive (kept alive on a D PI call on 3rd down). UNLV faked a punt on 4th-and-1 at their own 34 and broke a 36yarder up the gut which led to a 3rd down TD pass. 14-9 Rebels. USC got another short field, a 73y KO ret set up USC at the 23, but after O PI and two dropped passes, Trojans kicked a 47y FG. 14-12. Later UNLV missed a FG. Keyed by a 40y Carr run, USC drove for a TD just before HT. UNLV did drive to the USC26, but a holding call backed them up and they couldn’t get close enough to try an end of half FG…19-14 Trojans. After 4 FGs in the 1st H, USC turned in 3 TD drives in the 2nd H while UNLV only ran a total of 7 plays in USC territory. So USC had very good starting field position throughout the 2nd H leading to scoring drives of 69, 59, 43 yards for TD and a 57y FG drive. The final TD was scored with 1:38 left. Jake Olson was the xpt snapper. USC 23-17 FD, 501-405 TY (6.9-5.8 ypp), 44-33% 3rd down. USC D got 5 sacks (UNLV D 2). Daniels 22-35-282-1-0. Ware 10-100-TD, Carr 9-54. St Brown 7rec-98-TD. Oregon went 3-and-out on their first two poss and BG drove 10p42y and 10p73 for a 10-0 lead! Their third drive was SOD at the O33 after going 8p49y. After that the Ore D clamped down as BG went backwards on 3 of their next 4 drives. Ore would score 37 unanswered into late 2nd qrt…37-10. Ore did fumble a punt, BG converted a 4th-and-2 and got a 43y TD drive with :06 left in the half. 37-17. 2nd H saw big scoring plays, Ore got a pick-six and 83y TD, BG got a 63y TD and Ore capped the scoring with a 48y TD. 58-24 F. Herbert played until mid-4th, he QB’d all the scoring drives. FD even 21, Ore 504-389 TY (7.4-4.4 ypp). Duck D 3 sacks (BG 1). Herbert 10-21-281-5-2, #2 rusher 41y w/ TD. Ore leading rusher Verdell 13-51. Eight different rec caught a Duck pass, but only two receivers caught more than 1 pass. Doege 22-38-253-3-2. Clair 25-113. Scott Miller 13-166-2TD.

Arizona State opened with a 58y TD, then got a pick-six for a quick 14-0 lead. ASU would punt on their next 3 poss. UTSA only ran 6 plays in ASU territory, but on their best drive they did make it to the A26 with a 1st down, but were later sacked and fumbled. From there ASU drove 7p 64y converted a 4th down and led 21-0. UTSA punted from deep in own terr and ASU got a 5p 43y TD drive with just :32 left to lead 28-0 HT. ASU scored 3 straight TDs to open the 2nd H. UTSA’s TD was towards the end of the 4th qrt. TY 503-220 (8.4-2.9 ypp). UTSA was -3 TOs. ASU D had 15 TFLs and 9 sacks!! (UTSA had 0). Strangely, ASU only converted 30% 3rd down, while UTSA converted 39%. Wilkins 16-24-237-4-0, 28 rush yards. Eno 16-131-TD, Floyd 9-79-TD. Harry 6rec-140-2TD. Grundy 16-33-187-0-1.

East Carolina had 28-15 FD and 382-269 TY (4.0-4.5 ypp) edges. 2 turnovers and 2 FGs from inside the 5 killed the Pirates. The ECU D did their job early, limiting NCA&T to 17y and 1 FD on their first 4 offensive poss. Problem was ECU kicked a FG from the N5 and then at the end of their second drive threw a 100y pick-six to trail 3-7 despite having a 145-10 yardage edge. But ECU rebounded to lead 17-7. A&T had their best drive of the game right before HT, going 83y (aided by D PI) to make it a 17-14 game with a TD :06 left. That momentum did not carry over for A&T as they gained just 31y on 13p for their first 3 poss of the 2nd H. ECU had 2nd-and-goal when they fumbled at the N2 for their second turnover inside the 5. ECU was able to drive for a 35y FG their next poss....20-14 Pirates. A&T finally got their O going with an early 4th qrt TD drive to take the lead 21-20. ECU had 1st-and-goal at the 4, but settled for a 22y FG...23-21. A&T quickly retook the lead keyed by a 49y pass on a 75y drive....28-23, 7min left. After exchanging punts, ECU had great field position at the A&T 27, but ECU went 4-and-out, 3min left. ECU had one last chance getting the ball back with 2min left. They drove to the N37, but their pass as time expired was INT'd in the EZ. Herring 37-65-309-2-2. ECU run game only produced 68y on 29att. Green and Prohl led the receivers combing for 19-150-TD. DE Nate Harvey has been one of ECU's best players in camp (former walk-on RB, moved to DE), he led with 8 tkls incl 4 tfl. ECU did have 12 tlf. A&T was only credited with 1 sack, but had 13 qbh, I would almost think that was a typo, but this is ECU we are talking about.

SEC

Kentucky held CMich in check until UK QB Wilson fumbled giving CM the ball in UK terr, leading to a 41y drive for a 26y FG. 3-0 Chips. Rose broke a 55y TD run. 7-3. UK had good field position off a punt, but Wilson threw INT in EZ from the C32. CM went 14p 80y on a drive that Chris Westry was ejected for targeting on 3rd-and-long keeping the drive alive. 10-7 Chips. Next series Bowden fumbled and CM had a 20y fum ret TD to lead 17-7 (Bowden fumbled the ensuing KO too but recovered it). Snell broke a 52y run for TD. 17-14. Right before HT Wilson threw his 2nd INT (3rd turnover) and CM ret’d it 36y to the K10. Wilson was injured. CM got a 22y FG out of it 20-14. Hoak came in at QB for UK with :55 left he led them down the field, 3-6 passing for 48y (aided by D PI) with a 24y TD pass :14 left. 21-20. In the 2nd H CM ran a total of 1 play in UK terr until their final drive in which they ran 6. UK O was not fantastic, but did produce 2 TD drives on short fields. Wilson came back in to replace Hoak. Wilson can make plays outside the pocket, but takes risks. Hoak is a pocket guy, but plays it safer with the ball. 27-11 FD, 427-255 TY (6.1-3.9 ypp) edge for UK. UK lost 4 TOs, CM did not turn it over. CM did kick two very short FGs (off of UK TOs). Snell ran for 125, Rose 104, 2 TDs each. Wilson 11-18-78-0-2, 38y rushing. Hoak 4-9-50-1-0. Williams 11-82-TD. Deebo 7-56-TD. Anderson 11-13-91-0-0, 8net rush yards.
