Welcome to the wildest coaching carousel we've seen ...

In last week's CFP ranking, ND and Miami had identical 9-2 records and Miami beat them head to head. Yet ND was ranked higher.

SOS and SOR means a ton to the CFP committee.

OU played and beat 9-3 michigan by DD.

Ole Miss played no one in nonconf.

The SOS and SOR between OU and Ole Miss is no comparison. OU's is way stronger.

Re LSU interest in Lane, it was clear to many people who live, eat and breathe college football, that Lane was their one and only target from the getgo when BK got beaten by A&M like a dog at home on 10/25.

It was over for him.

Guarantee you that LSU's people got in touch with Lane's people (his agent is not hard to find) no later than Monday 10/27.
Someone in this thread said Lane had 40 days to decide but gave his assistants 1 hour (Lane is disputing the claim he gave an ultimatum to his assistants) but tonight marks 34 days since Kelly was canned.

Everyone knew where this was going.
Again NOT true about Ole Miss not playing anyone non conference - it’s not hard to look at schedules or resumes. We beat 10 win Tulane and likely CFP team by 35. Once again you are misinformed BUD

Go look at SOS and SOR metrics. It's all available.

OU is about 10th

OM is about 40th.

Bad news for the Indiana's, Texas Tech's, Ole Miss's and Vandy's of 2025:

The Portal Transfer rules changes being implemented on 01/02/2026 will change things in terms of multitransfer players in the same calendar year:

Major NCAA Division I football transfer portal changes for 2025-2026 include a new, single transfer window from January 2–16 and the elimination of the spring window. A 15-day exception is also in place for players on teams that change coaches. In other sports, a key 2025 change allows athletes who have already transferred once to transfer again and be immediately eligible without sitting out a season, provided they maintain academic eligibility.

Football transfer portal changes
  • Single winter window: The portal officially opens on January 2nd for most players, replacing the previous December opening and eliminating the spring window.
  • Late season exception: A 15-day exception is given to players on teams that make a coaching change.
  • Post-championship exception: Players on teams that reach the national championship will have an additional 5-day period to enter the portal after their final game.

Someone mentioned earlier in the thread about Saint Nick retiring and Kalen being allowed to coach Washington in the championship game.

That was a retirement announcement by Nick right after the semifinal loss to Michigan on 1/1/2024 and Washington also won that day only to play in the national championship game just one week later.

Here with the lane situation, today is nov 30 and the title game is jan 19 2026.

We are talking 50 days from now if OM were to win each rd to get into the final. 7 weeks. That would be insane.

Apples and oranges between that situatik two years ago and this one.

We are in the 12 team CFP era. It is a whole new ballgame.

The off-season calendar is talked about a lot these past few months ...

And to start, the EASIEST first move ..

NSD needs to be moved back to the first Tuesday of February.

The early signing period, that is now in December was created for reasons that I don't believe are as important now. A big part of that was to create less "flipping" and to lock these kids in earlier.

No need. We're in the wild West now.

Move NSD back to where it should be. Allow kids to still early enroll and sort of have that binding and allow them to go to school starting in January.

To add to this, signing day kinda is blah now. Both of them. Granted, I think a lot of us recruiting nerds don't have the same passion anymore, but the move to December accelerated that!

Let's make NSD Great AGAIN!

Next up let's call the WFT the Redskins again!

The other issue with the CFB off-season calendar is some of these times simply have to overlap.

With expanding playoffs and whatnot, there is no way to end the season in December.

Simply put, teams in the final 4/8 are at a disadvantage.

As are teams like Ole Miss (this year) trying to change a staff and prepare for playoffs.

I was thinking about this the other day...

Go back to 2007...

Let's say WVU wins the backyard brawl. No upset there. They are now heading to the championship game (I believe it was the sugar bowl that year).

Still, Rich Rod is courted and hired by UM (woof).

Three weeks B4 the champ game.

We assume that he would have coached in a champ game and meanwhile been filling his staff at Mich.

How would we have looked at that? I think that would be controversial, but not to the extent it would be today. Right?

Anyways, I was just comparing eras in my head is all.

We've seen plenty of guys coach their team one more time. The possibility of multiple games and maybe over a month till officially finished changes things a lot.

I think about this as well. Obviously Campbell has been rumored to leave for years. I do know that ISU fans would take that final bowl game to have a bunch of fun and appreciate him to the nth degree. Clearly there would be a couple bad apples that are bitter but they are certainly in the minority.

And every situation is different...

Campbell will always be rumor to somewhere...

I'd think if he left after a regular season that he'd be the type to coach out. And I think they would love for him to do that.

Shout-out @Grovehard and @Charles0619 ...

Two great Ole Miss fans/CTG members. We appreciate all your contributions. I understand totally letting things get a bit emotional. Holding the offensive staff hostage (if true) is bolsquash.

Stoops fired at Kentucky
Put Stoops in the same category as Mike Gundy. Solid coaches who prospered under the old system of college football but hated the NIL/transfer portal system and fought it instead of adapting to it.

Saban was the same, but he was smart enough to move on

It's really fascinating that Pollard (AD) hired Campbell and Otzelberger knowing that ISU could easily be a stepping stone type job and he addressed that before hiring. Campbell has had many opportunities to leave but showed the love to the community. TJ is a different animal in that his first job as an assistant was at ISU in 2006(?) I believe and he did the whole thing with McDermott and Hoiberg and declared ISU to be his dream job. That's the kind of guy you just love at a non destination school.
