The Los Angeles Lakers have announced that point guard Steve Nash will miss the entire 2014-15 season.

"Being on the court this season has been my top priority and it is disappointing to not be able to do that right now," Nash said in a statement released by the team. "I work very hard to stay healthy and unfortunately my recent setback makes performing at full capacity difficult. I will continue to support my team during this period of rest, and will focus on my long-term health."

Nash, who at 40 is the NBA's oldest active player, hadn't practiced with the team since leaving an Oct. 12 exhibition game.

"As disappointed as we are for ourselves and our fans, we're even more disappointed for Steve," Lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak said in a statement.

"We know how hard he's worked the last two years to try to get his body right for the rigors of the NBA, and how badly he wants to play, but unfortunately he simply hasn't been able to get there up to this point in time. Steve has been a consummate professional, and we greatly appreciate his efforts."

Because of back, knee and hamstring issues, Nash played in just 65 of a possible 164 regular-season games the past two seasons with the Lakers. Nash tweaked his back earlier this month while carrying bags.

Nash decided not to retire this offseason and instead returned to the Lakers, who will pay him about $9.7 million in the final year of a three-year, $28 million deal. Nash also said this summer that he believes this season -- his 19th -- will be his last.

The only thing surprising about this is that they couldn't coax him onto retirement before the season started. He was never playing more than 20 games

He said he wouldnt retire because he needed the money.. i think his ex, has gotten him pretty good...

Nash is owed $9.3 million for the current year and $9.7 million for next season. If he's found to be physically unable to play, he would still receive full compensation.
The NBA would then do its due diligence, sending a league-appointed physician to verify Watkins' findings.
If the league would sign off, the final year of Nash's contract would be completely removed from the Lakers' salary cap -- as long as he plays in fewer than 10 games this season.
So far, Nash has made six appearances. Has he made his last?

he played exactly 10 games last season

Lakers could/should have had has salary off the cap this year

Faking the injury cuz he does not want to play with Kobe. Lol

He knows he has had back problems for years....why was he carrying bags that could possibly injure him? Doesn't make sense. As has already been said....wasn't expecting him to play many games this year anyway.

PS - What is wrong with the Lakers trainers/strength conditioning? Ton of injuries last year (to players not named Kobe/Nash...so its not age) and look at their pre-season injuries - Jordan Clarkson, Xavier Henry, Ryan Kelly, and Nick Young - thats four of their top 9 hurt. If you are looking for fantasy players....check out Boozer/Lin/Randle, Ed Davis and Ronnie Price....lot of minutes with the injuries.
