NBA Road to the Playoffs (Money-Making Season) Research/Analysis/Plays

Gorgolon Lives

The Reverend of CTG
With only about 10-12 games left in the season, this is the "money making" time to bet the NBA. This is when the playoff teams are motivated to either get in the playoffs or increase seeding position. During this time, you can throw out public %'s and the like. This is the time when the good teams will beat up on the bad teams. Particular value can be had when these good teams are on the road against a bad team. This year, we have an added dimension, as more teams are "tanking." This should lead to even more betting opportunities.

This thread will be dedicated to identifying the teams fighting for the playoffs and/or seeding, and identifying the bad teams, especially teams that are tanking. The goal is find the plays that are worth betting on down the stretch.

I'll do my best to provide information, but I haven't spent much time at all on NBA this season. We will need help from the others, so hopefully this will be a group effort. In roughly 10+ years of betting, I've found that this time of year in the NBA season provides some of the more profitable betting situations in all of the sports.

The 8 playoff teams are just about set in the East. NY, Clev, and Det have outside chances. Miami/ Indy in a huge battle for home court. Charlotte should be motivated to try to catch WASH for the 6 seed to avoid Miami and Indy in round 1.

PHX/DAL/MEM in a dogfight for the 8th seed. OKC trying to catch SA for home court, conversely SA trying to hold on to home court.

Who does Memphis want to play or not want to play in the playoffs or are they content with being in the playoffs and being healthy considering how the 1st half of their season had gone..

Tanking teams: Philly, Millwaukee battling for the most ping pong balls.

All other teams really have nothing to play for, as we approach the playoffs.

3 horse race for final 2 spots out West. MEM needs to win as much as they can.

Daily betting opportunities will provide all of the games where playoff teams are playing teams that are playing for nothing.

3/26 betting opportunities:

TOR -3 at BOS

LAC -7 at NOR

DEN at Spurs -13

MEM -8 at Jazz

ATL +6 at MINN

An argument could be made for the KNICKS tonight as a betting opportunity. But after last night's blowout loss to a bad Lakers team without Gasol, I have my doubts about them.

Would think Memphis would help GS and Suns if convenient as both have terrible history vs them.

Not a great situation in Boston. TOR off b2b and boston well rested. Pass.
Pelicans 3-0 ATS L3...Pass
Spurs...Looking but that's a high line, not too much value.
MEM...like it.
ATL...considering

I hit grizz live going into the 4th at +262

such a dope squad...

I can't believe the Bucks are favorites tomorrow...-1.5 against the Lakers? Lmao...I might have to take it, bucks have been playing solid basketball lately. They have been passing the ball much more than usual.

If they win they only have a 1 game lead. Really not sure they are willing to win the game.

1-1 on 3/26

3/27 betting opportunities:

No real opportunities today. DAL needs a W, as they fight for a playoff spot. But DAL is off a big win, and they face LAC who is off a loss. The situation isn't as good as it may seem.

3/28 betting Opportunities:

BOS at TOR -10 ... TOR cant catch the #2 spot, so they are merely playing to retain #3 in East. Not strong enough to play. PASS

CHAR -4.5 at ORL ... On this one at -4. CHAR trying to catch WIZ for #6 to avoid Indy/MIA. Wiz got a tough one tonight against Indy. Must win scenario for CHAR, who has been very good ATS on the road, including a 10pt win at ORL earlier this season. Good spot. PLAY.

SAC at OKC -12.5 ... OKC off a tough OT loss to DAL, now sit 3 games back from SAS for #1 in West. Kings surprisingly 5-2 ATS last 7. OKC needs to win, but can they cover the big #? Not sure...

SAS -6.5 at DEN ... SAS needs to win to stay atop the west. This is the back end of a home and home, where SAS did not cover in game 1. Might consider ML here in a parlay, but probably won't lay the points.

Spurs ML / OPEN ML Parlay for 1 unit

I'll hang on to the Open slot and fill it with a NBA ML on a later day. Mozgov is out tonight for DEN. That usually wouldn't mean much, but it's magnified tonight because Hickson is already out, along with Vessly and Chandler. That leaves DEN with 4 rostered big men: Miller, Arthur, Randolph, and Faried. Randolph hardly even played against the Spurs in the last game, but he will likely be forced into more action tonight. This one could get ugly.

Bulls at home to portland- tblazers playing b2b - like the bulls on ml.. fighting for the 3rd spot...
Blazers fighting as well but got their win last night..

Blazers fighting as well but got their win last night..

Like Bulls if I had to choose, but PORT only 2.5 games out of the 8th seed. Huge battle out west from 5 through 9.

CHAR held 3 with 10 seconds to go and then inexplicably gave up a wide open 3 for the tie. Tough loss, but that's the NBA. Spurs won the first end of a ML par, so I have a side to fill.

Will be back with today's outlook...

3/29 Betting Opportunities:

SAC at DAL -10 ... DAL still fighting for 8th seed, as they are mathematically .5 games out of the playoffs right now. This is a must win. They are also coming off a home loss. Kings on the 2nd leg of a b2b with Thomas a ?. Kings say they "hope" Thomas can play. Considering DAL here.

NO at SAS -14 ... SAS sits 3 games up on OKC for home court. SAS on the 2nd leg of a b2b. Rumors say they could consider sitting some vets. Looks like Davis is out for NO. Too many question marks to consider in this one. PASS

MIA -9 at MILW ... With Indy's loss last night, MIA can pick up a game and get to 1 game back of the 1st seed in East. MIA coming off a b2b, but they were able to rest some guys in a blowout win. Wade is a ?, and I'm not sure they need him tonight against this Bucks team. Bucks coming off a home win. I find it hard to believe the Bucks can string together back to back su wins. Considering MIA.

Wasn't inexplicable, the defender got picked and he went under the pick and the other defender never stepped up which gave him a wide open three...,,
pet peeve of mine - you know they are going to take a three...as a defender you should be standing on the 3 line so that the offensive player is 2 feet back of the three line to get a good look, so what if he goes by you,, the only has a 2 pointer ..... anyway in this situation,, the "other" defender should have been standing up near the 3 line as soon as his guy went to set a pick... 2 does them no good especially as there were about 3-4 seconds on the clock...

BTW you were right on with the tblazers...

pet peeve of mine - you know they are going to take a three...as a defender you should be standing on the 3 line so that the offensive player is 2 feet back of the three line to get a good look, so what if he goes by you,, the only has a 2 pointer ..... anyway in this situation,, the "other" defender should have been standing up near the 3 line as soon as his guy went to set a pick... 2 does them no good especially as there were about 3-4 seconds on the clock...

BTW you were right on with the tblazers...

Right...I guess my point was that ORL got a wide open 3 when everyone in the building knew they would be shooting a 3. That can't happen. Outside of Mia, Indy, and maybe the Nets, the rest of these Eastern Conference playoff teams are inexperienced and pretty mediocre. Something to keep in mind, especially in "must-win" games down the stretch.

I fucked up and took a CBB side with this. The CBB side lost, so I don't have this available. If I did, I'd hit Miami Heat ML tonight. With Indy losing last night and taking on the Spurs tonight (I believe they will lose again), Miami can gain ground with a W.

Miami wins tonight

Some good games today, but a lot of these games are toss ups because a lot of teams still fighting for playoffs/seeding.

MEM -4.5 ... MEM on the last leg of a road trip which is never good. But they take on a struggling T Wolves team. Wolves have lost 5 of 7 su and ats, with the only wins coming against ATL and the Lakers. Considering MEM as they are fighting for #8 out West.

Looking at Bobcats as well, maybe just the ML there in a parlay.

Locking in now before lines goes up:

Bobcats / Grizzlies ML parlay for 1 unit (-117 Odds)

Bobcats beat WASH last game, so they are now 2 games off WASH for the 6th seed. This is a must win against a terrible team. What I like about this one is that Philly beat CHAR in their last meeting in Philly, so CHAR will not come into this overlooking Philly.

Grizz in a battle for 8th out West. Grizz on the final game of a 5 game road trip, so the spot isn't the best. But with games at the Spurs and home to Miami coming up, they can't afford to lose these next 2 games against Minny and Denver. The key to the game is the interior. Pek looks to be OUT (currently listed as DOUBT). That leaves Minny with inexperienced, Deng, to man the interior. He's played well, but he's facing probably the most crafty big man tandem in the league, in Gasol and Randolph. They should have their way tonight (much like they did down the stretch in Utah against their young bigs). As mentioned above, Minny's season is just about done. They've dropped 5 of 7 (su and ats), with the only wins coming against the Hawks and Lakers. Some of the starters were benched last game when they were getting blown out. The team is finished.

Well, sitting 2-3 right now during this end of season stretch. It's been tough to get a read on these lower seeded potential playoff teams. Some big guns are playing tonight, but the games are too tight to call.

4/3 Opportunities:

Thunder -4 ... this is a playoff game tonight, plain and simple. If the Spurs win, they effectively clinch the 1 seed in the West (Cant see them blowing a 5 game lead with 6 to play after tonight) and the vets will be able to get some extra rest before the "real" playoffs. If the Thunder win, they pick up a game and still have a puncher's chance (at 3 games back). That being said, triple revenge is hard to ignore for the Spurs, and the thought of extra rest should have this team motivated for a win tonight.

Dallas +4 ... Clippers could catch OKC for the 2 seed, especially if OKC wins tonight. But they face a Dallas team fighting just to get the playoffs. Lean DAL but Im concerned oddsmakers opened this fairly high for a reason.

Busy day..

MEM/OPEN ML parlay ... bet this two times for .5units each. Will fill in future. Probably not tonight.

BOL

Filling this with Heat ML tonight. Risking 1 unit to win .6 units. Heat now control their own destiny in terms of home court advantage in the East. A little home court loss revenge doesn't hurt either. Heat need this one before some tough road games coming up (against playoff teams) and a home game against Indy.

.5 units on a ML parlay:

Dallas Mavs / Wash Nats (Gonzalez) pays about EVEN

Despite the bad spot on the road, DAL needs this win with 3 tough games coming up, including 2 against fellow 8th seed believers: PHX and MEM.

Not much reasoning needed on Gio. Marlins bats just overpowered tonight.

Gonna monitor this Heat game. See how it plays out. Grizz tomorrow could be a value play as they face the Heat in a true look ahead spot against Indy and off a b2b performance.

I just watched the best player in the game get fouled on the final shot and not get the call. The NBA has deteriorated so much. It used to be my favorite of all the sports, too. It's sad.
