MLB Offseason Thread

Know it's not a popular opinion but if Yanks can turn Gardner and prospects into good SP it'll make the Elsbury signing much more attractive.

Can't comment on Detroit...I've thought they were by far the best team in MLB last 3 years and they've not won a damn thing.

And Yanks still have plenty of $$$ for Cano and others...

monk i understand you pessimism with the tigs, i have had my fair share and we agree to disagree. i always of course would have rather seen someone else besides fister go but i dont think it hurts them long term, in fact i think it helps. moving on... this would be beautiful to me and would fly in the face of anyone saying Mr. I is cutting salary to be cheap and rebuild.

Mark Feinsand of the New York Daily News reports that Shin-Soo Choo is the Tigers' "top target" as they seek a left-handed hitting outfielder.

It's become apparent that with the Prince Fielder and Doug Fister trades, the Tigers were clearing some payroll space for their next big move. Choo would certainly qualify, as he's surely going to command a contract over $100 million. The Yankees, Rangers and Mariners are three other teams known to have interest in the OBP machine.

So if they sign Choo they filled their biggest needs of 2B, Closer, Left Handed Reliever, get a lefty in the all RH rotation and LF; while giving up Prince when Cabrera can slide over and your top prospect is at 3rd anyway and you cant ever DH Miggy because of Victor and give up your 4th best starting pitcher.

I also think the clubhouse gets a boost with some of these guys coming over to change it up a bit, much like the Sox did last year. It could be debated Peralta and Fielder were not wanted by some players.

I am 100% on board with this if they grab Choo Choo and see no reason why they dont compete at the same or better level. Whatever was, was not working.

Choo's a good all-around player. Would not like to see him back in the division 18-19X a year. He seemed mentally out of it his last couple seasons in Cleveland, but rebounded pretty nicely in Cincy. Hoping the Tigs don't get him.

Besides the length of the contract and the dollars, the other concern with Ellsbury is that he's dinged half the time. Fantasy leaguers know it as well as the Sox fans. Guy's like an Italian sports car, always in the shop getting tuned up. Knew someone would pay him, sort of surprised it was the Yankees ... I don't think Boston minds it that much.

Reds are still interested in Gardner...u want BP?

I like the addition of Kazmir for 11 mil per year which is cheap for a starting pitcher. having said that, he's a huge risk.

That was too much for Kazmir. Close observer last year. He started the season on the DL. He tossed gems or shitburgers, very few in between. Required extra rest at several points during the season. Think he's been on the DL like 10 times in 8 years. Even in this market, surprised he got that deal. Indians knew him best, and wouldn't go more than one year. And I doubt their ONE year offer was 11-million.

I know he had his moments, just find it hard to believe that he would get 11 million a year, after struggling to cut it with a team 2 years prior

Struggling to cut it is putting it mildly. He pitched for the independent Sugar Land Skeeters in 2012. Tribe threw a dart last year.

someone said they want to keep Gardner, have two guys at the top of the lineup with speed and OBP

would provide two helluva "table setters" and defensive OFers but that would make getting Tanaka a HUGE must...maybe they know Kuroda's coming back?

B lineup and A pitching...wait, isn't that the Tigres team I've thought was far-n-away the best in MLB? I'd be concerned that Victor ain't enough to truly protect Cabrera, personally.

Are those 2013 salaries? Some of those guys are still arbitration eligible which keeps the salary down. Or a case like Hudson that took a discount. But, the main factor is the guys that are arbitration.

Wainwright makes 19 million this year for example.

He signed a 5 year 80 million dollar deal (avg 16 mil). They just kept the first year low (8 mil)

That was an interesting read on the rationale in signing Kazmir. Except for this dreamer in the comments section: "I see 16-8 over 185 innings with a 3.25 ERA and 190 K’s." Little on the ambitious side, wouldn't you say?

Yeah, I believe that's ambitious. Looking at his numbers, he suffered a bit through some bad luck. over 9 ks per 9, 2.7 bbs per 9 is fantastic. Homeruns at 1.08 is not ideal, but not terrible. Overall he had a 3.51 FIP and 3.36 xFIP.

He should benefit from being a flyball pitcher going to Oakland. He's risk is that he's an injury risk. I think it's far to pay 11 million for a starter that can give you a mid 3 ERA if healthy (which is what I would expect based on pitching in Oakland and his peripherals from a year ago...and to a lesser degree his career)

Im not sure what was going on with him from the point of him being a top propsect and pitching dominate for the Rays until last year so I'm not sure what the causes of his struggles have been. But, I do think he's a fair risk at a market derived salary. Hell, Phil Hughes got 8 million per year.

One question in column: Why didn’t #Tigers get more for Fister? Some GMs weren’t even aware he was available.

Why didn’t get Tigers get more for Doug Fister?

This one still has rival executives scratching their heads. Fister is one of the top 10 or 15 starting pitchers in the game, and will be quite affordable at approximately $18 million to $19 million combined in his final two years of arbitration. Yet, the Tigers parted with him for a utility infielder, Steve Lombardozzi, a promising 20-year-old left-handed reliever, Ian Krol, and a solid left-handed prospect, Robbie Ray, who could develop into a No. 3 starter.

for the sake of comparison, i compared last years stats of kazmir and compared it to last years salaries...aka to prove my point more, 8-11 million last year got you: sanchez, hudson, darvish, garza, shields, nolasco, lester, kershaw, waino...this year 11 m gets you Kaz?

damn, you just flat out trolling my brother, orange monk? definitely agree with the article...Fister underrated and really affordable for next 2 yrs.

But, the problem is that some of those guys are arbitration eligible so it doesnt' compare to free agent salaries or guys like Waino and Sanchez that had really low salaries for 1 year and then bump up.

The better comparison is to other free agent pitchers. Unless you want to argue that they should have traded for a cost controlled pitcher, like say Fister....in which case I would support that. But by judging FA salaries, Kazmir is a solid risk/reward, imo.

Not intending to. I like a lot of the moves that the Tigers did. And getting someone like Choo would probably be good. And they could use the Fister money to good use. My only argument is that on paper, the trade seems like the Tigers either overvalued the prospect or overvalued the value of a utility player and a left handed middle reliever. I just find it hard to believe they couldn't get more for Fister, I haven't heard any injury concerns about him.

Bovada has already changed the odds to Yanks at +200, Texas at +300. That makes more sense, though I'd still bet Yanks

even if you take out those that are arbitration eligible you still will find pitchers who out performed Kazmir for the same money....i don't think the risk reward is the same...josh johnson is a better example of a solid risk/reward compared to kazmir

I don't quite see it as risk/reward either. The risk is he gets hurt or sucks. The reward is that he pitches like an $11-million dollar pitcher. I mean, what does he have to do to "reward" the A's and outperform his contract ... Win 20 games? If they luck out, they get what they paid for.

Well, for example, if Kazmir pitches exactly like he did last year, he's relative worth salary wise (using WAR) is 12.7 million dollars.

Just go by what free agent pitchers are getting:

Haren- 10 million
Lincecum 17 million
Nolasco 12 million
Hughes 8 million

You could argue Nolasco pitched better, that could be debated, but they were fairly close. Kazmir was significantly better than those other guys.

I understand he pitched his way to an 11-million dollar deal, I just wouldn't be the one to give him 11-million. I saw enough red flags from the guy. Not looking, but at least half his starts had to have been five-and-flies.

I'd rather find the next Kazmir reclamation project, or trade for a friendly contract, or turn a youngster loose. Which it seems to me is what the A's usually do. I thought the A's had enough pitching in place that I wouldn't have thought they'd pay Kaz, but .... He is a lefty.

Dex Fowler to the Stros, has that been posted? Condolences, Dex.

The reward for Kazmir contract is it's a one year deal. Team isn't locked into anything. Makes it a lot better than a 3 year 33M deal.

Brewers traded Aoki to KC for Will Smith.

Weird move for KC.. they have like 5 similar OF now
