MLB Offseason Thread

Let's do a recap shall we:

Toronto Blue Jays Sign Dionar Navarro - Navarro will make $3 million next season and $5 million in 2015. The contract's completion is contingent on the free agent passing a physical.

Scott Kazmir signs with the A's 2 years $22MM

Jim Johnson traded to the A's for Jemile Weekes + PTBNL

Pirates acquire Ian Stewart from the Yankees

Rumor Mill:

Granderson met with the Mets

Hawk is signing with Boston

Yankees make offer to Kuroda

Looks like the Angels will try to land Bartolo Colon

Cano to Washington has come up as well

Rockies interested in Justin Mourneau

oh and the Detroit Tigers just got fleeced and the Jays get rid of JP

JP has a market? He had maybe the worst season in the history of the sport.

apparently it's Texas or Colorado...

Toronto Blue Jays: By coming to terms with free agent catcher Dioner Navarro on a deal, the team is now free to move J.P. Arencibia to a new location. The Colorado Rockies may be a good fit for the low-average power hitting backstop, as they're looking to potentially move Wilin Rosario to the outfield, at least some of the time

The Toronto Blue Jays were also unable to find a trade partner for J.P. Arencibia, so they opted to non-tender him and allow him to explore free agency. He may very likely end up with the Texas Rangers, who are believed to have been exploring a possible trade for the catcher yesterday

man...AA should have taken a bag of balls for JP yesterday

On Monday night, the Baltimore Orioles sent closer Jim Johnson to the Oakland Athletics in exchange for second baseman Jemile Weeks, a deal that had many people scratching their heads.
<offer>
As ESPN.com's Buster Olney put it, "Industry perception is that the Orioles' trade of Jim Johnson was a giveaway, a total salary dump." However, this does not appear to be a case of a team simply selling off high-priced players in an attempt to decrease its overall payroll at the expense of maintaining a competitive roster.

As Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports reports, a source told him the Orioles could be using the money they'll save by unloading Johnson in order to pursue free agent outfielder Nelson Cruz. At the very least, by saddling the Athletics with Johnson's salary, the Orioles may have eliminated one potential competitor for Cruz from the mix.
</offer>

Seems a little un-Beane-esque to acquire a closer under contract.

Pirates have taken everyone in Pittsburgh on a ride if they make no moves whatsoever with all the money they made this year

I think some of this Fister stuff is a little overrated. He has been a solid starter no doubt, but he isnt dominating. You have to pay JV and Anibal and assuming they will pay Max if he has another stellar year. Porcello showed huge improvement last year, is much cheaper and more importantly younger. So if Mr. I is looking to save a few bucks, it makes sense to spend a few on a position of need.

Truth be told, I think this Tiger team is better suited to win in the postseason now. They have much more roster flexibility, have a little more speed, have a decent lefty out of the pen, finally have a a lefty starter in Smyly they can put in and most importantly have a closer which moves Benoit back to the set up role and strengthens this pen a lot.

Trees needed to be shaken one way or another and they were. I dont love it, but I dont hate it at all and am looking forward to the different look this year.

I think on the outside it looks like they have lost too much for what they have received, but as far as huge team needs, i think those have been addressed. One more good player in left would be nice of course.

Porcello makes like 2 million dollars less than Fister, hardly savings enough to justify cost as any reason for a team with a $150M payroll. Why does Fister have to be dominating to be a great pitcher? He doesn't post high K's but he located and gets guys out. Regardless of what you think his value to this team specifically is, when you're trading away a #2 pitcher who is making peanuts compared to his counterparts, you have to get something good in return. The Tigers got next to nothing.

How are the better suited to win now? What is their roster flexibility? No one is even sure if Lombardozzi can even play SS in order to be a utility infielder, let alone get on base (sub .300 OBP). That doesn't sound very flexible to me. Neither does not having any depth if a SP goes down. Smyly was great in the pen and was able to step in to start if needed -- they don't have that now. They gained no speed from this be Lombardozzi can't get on base any better than Iglesias or Kinsler, so he's strictly utility that won't matter. We had a great lefty in the pen (smyly) that we turned into a decent one. Benoit is a FA so locking him into the 8th role right now is no guarantee.

I still don't understand what team need was addressed. You got 3 guys who won't equal up to a win of WAR by the end of 2014. Nathan will pitch 60 innings and will be slightly more effective than Smyly was, given the little impact you can have over 60 innings of work.

The Tigers were a much better team 24 hours ago then they are now... and a cheaper one too!

I guess I can understand financially the reason to get rid of him, but I seriously doubt they didnt have more attractive offers. Just last year the Rays got Wil Meyers for a similar pitcher (Shields) in a similar situation 2 years left of arbitration. Look at what Garza got in return. The trade for Peavy got Iglesias. Nolasco just got a huge FA deal.

Fister is as good or better than all of them.

i think kinsler and lombardozzi are faster than infante and fielder. roster flexibility is huge when you have victor miggy and fielder clogging up the field limited to basically DH or 1b. Peralta Infante and Fielder were all sloths that did not allow the team to play a style other than hit it further than the other team. I dont know if they have improved, but i dont think they have digressed to the point you have suggested based on losing fister. I dont care about high K totals, in fact i think they are a waste of an out at time as it uses up pitches in a pitch count so i have no clue of what you are talking about. But to say Fister is better than Max or JV is insane if you are saying he is a #2 starter on a contending team and he isnt better than Zimmerman, Gio, or Strasburg on Wash. He is a middling starter who will do very well in the NL keeping the ball down. He is a solid player, far from the superstar people are making him out to be.

Were you happy with the bullpen last year? 2 million a year is a big difference believe it or not and i dont have a problem with the tigers choosing to go with the less expensive younger arm in porcello who showed a lot of improvement last year. not to mention finally getting a lefty in the lineup. did you want this team to stay the same and suck in 5 years and rely on benoit and this same old pen with lefty specialist phil coke to carry us into the championship?

You cant compare Smyly to Nathan, completely different roles when comparing them last year.

Who knows what will happen, but i am one who is happy for change and i am not a "change" kind of guy. But something needed to be done.

I wont compare Doug Fister and James Shields Dollaz, ever.

Fister has been rated as the 9th best starter in the last 3 years based on WAR. He's 15th based on traditional metrics. I think people severly underate him, even Tigers fans.

And Fister going to the NL with a defense than can actually field ground balls should help him as he's one of the best ground ball pitchers in baseball. Just to use as an example, Fister (an extreme ground ball pitcher) had a babip on ground balls of .287 last year. He's going to the Nationals were their starters had the following BABIP on ground balls:

Strasburg .239
Gio .215
Zimmermann .193
Haren .296
Jordan .253

Actually if there is one starter in baseball I would compare Fister to it would be Zimmermann, they are similar as can be seen in the chart above which ranks the best pitchers in baseball over the past 3 years.

I think Fister is slightly ahead of Gio and Z and it will show with the improved defense which should certainly bring that BABIP down.

Fister is certainly not a superstar, but is also much better than a middle of the rotation type starter. He must be ecstatic right now knowing he gets two years with competent infield defense.

agree with the zimmerman comparison, though zimm has more upside. i think any team would rather shields than fister all things equal.

I could see it and I don't really feel strongly enough to persist in the argument over Shields/Fister. Certainly the perception by most is that Shields is better. I certainly don't see a huge difference, but if you think Shields is better, I can respect that opinion. Either way 1 got you Wil Myers, possibly the top prospect in baseball; the other got you a top 150 prospect (?), and 2 replaceable parts.

Two really bizarre money wasting signings by the A's getting Kaz and Jim J for those prices. Bill B must have gone on a bender and forgot to leave his checkbook home.

Who is the heir apparent to Johnson in Baltimore? O'Day seems to be the only real option at this point. I'm fine with Baltimore dumping some salary to get someone good, but please don't have it be Nelson Cruz. Starting pitching is what they've been lacking for a number of years. Adding another outfielder makes no sense...

i think kinsler and lombardozzi are faster than infante and fielder. roster flexibility is huge when you have victor miggy and fielder clogging up the field limited to basically DH or 1b.

I'm talking about the Fister trade / Nathan signing, not the Fielder trade that happened 3 weeks ago.
Fister has #2 stuff. obviously he's not the second best pitcher on the Tigers. on average, he would be the second best pitcher on an MLB team.
The roles the guys play is largely irrelevant compared to the outcomes they produce. The talent is there, it's up to the manager to put that person where he is most useful. Smyly had great #s across the board last year. The bullpen is still awful, probably worse than it was. You lose your best arm in Smyly, Veras, Dotel, and potentially Benoit, and add a great arm in Nathan and a pretty meh player in Krol. whoop dee do.

I like the addition of Kazmir for 11 mil per year which is cheap for a starting pitcher. having said that, he's a huge risk.

This is like the Yanks swooping in after a Sox title and overpaying for Damon all over again. Although I guess I have to know what they're paying him before I say they're overpaying him. Don't 7-year deals make you cringe though?
