European basketball season 2015/2016

Orleans/Lyon Over 143.5 - L
Prienai +1.5 - L
Rakvere Tarvas -4.5 - W

Dec. 8th: 1-2 (-1.02u)

Season: 112-99-2 (+5.33u)

Eurocup: Avtodor Saratov -3 - 1 unit (1.97)

Two teams playing opposing style of basketball will meet in Thessaloniki today. PAOK likes to play slow half-court offense and grind type of defense while Avtodor Saratov likes to run the floor and outscore opponents. PAOK has 3rd worst eDiff in Eurocup at -11.7 while Avtodor has 4th best eDiff at +14.1. PAOK defense is far from good (109.2 DRtg), Avtodor has the most efficient offense in Eurocup (120.1 ORtg). Avtodor players are accustomed to playing tough physical teams on the road. Since the beginning of the season Saratov beat some good teams - Nizhny Novgorod, Besiktas (twice), Lietuvos (twice), St.Petersburg (on the road). Saratov is perfect 6-0 SU/ATS in L6 games in VTB League and Eurocup. Saratov won first meeting with PAOK 90:68 at home. Saratov -3 (B)

Eurocup: Aris -5 - 1 unit (1.92)

Aris is 3-0 SU/ATS in L3 games in Greek league and Eurocup. Aris won these games with AEK Athens, Unics Kazan and on Sunday with Nea Kifisia. Steaua lost first meeting with Aris 70:66, so the Greeks are aware they need to show up in Bucharest otherwise they can find themselves in trouble. Steaua won only 2 games in Eurocup but is able to cover against the spread when playing at home (2-2 ATS at home with ats wins vs Trabzonspor and Podgorica). Aris -5 (B)

Eurocup: Valencia -5.5 - 1 unit (1.92)

Valencia is basically an Euroleague team playing in Eurocup (at lower level of competition). Valencia is on 17-game winning streak in ACB and Eurocup. Valencia is 13-4 ATS since the beginning of the 2015/2016 season. This amazing record was achieved despite Valencia's head coach Pedro Martinez decision to rest key players in multiple Eurocup games (like PG van Rossum). Venezia is coming off a straight up loss to Cantu at home as -8 point favorite (game played on Sunday). Venezia is 1-3-1 in L5 games played in LegaA and Eurocup. Even with some players out Valencia should win and cover against the spread. Valencia -5.5 (B)

Eurocup: Lietuvos rytas Vilnius TT Under 79 - 1 unit (1.93)

St.Petersburg is now one of the most unpleasant places to play basketball in Europe thanks to defensive effort Zenit players are giving. Zenit has limited Szolnoki to 64 points, Tbilisi to 50, Besiktas to 58, Saratov to 74, PAOK to 66. Petersburg is also crushing opposing teams on the road - Lietuvos scored only 65 points vs Russian team, PAOK 70 and Loimaa 62 points. Very quietly Petersburg have climbed to number one spot in DRtg rank with 95.3. Opponents are shooting .467 eFG% vs Zenit in Eurocup which gives Zenit 3rd best record in that statistical category. Lietuvos is just 1-4 ATS in L5 and 2-5 ATS under the new head coach. Lietuvos TT Under 79 (A)

Love the TT Under on Vilnus. Aren't you worried that Valencia secured first place in their group? Also, I would think that a smart coach will try to break the streak now, instead of having blown up in their faces in much more important stages of the season...

I'm not concerned with that. Head coach and players are pros - the club doesn't pay them to loose but to win. And Valencia has deep roster - their 11th and 12th rotation player is still probably better than Venezia's 5th or 6th. I watched large parts of previous Valencia games in Eurocup and I was impressed how well the team played with G Vives instead of van Rossum. I really like Belgian point guard but Vives is younger, quicker, plays harder on defense, has great 3-point shot and court vision. What I like about Valencia is their system - it doesn't matter who coach Martinez plugs into the system, the players are productive and that's what's important at the end of the day. Losing on purpose is psychologically and morally bad - it has bad influence on players work ethic, it teaches them bad habits and makes them worse.

For players who play less than 10 minutes on average, it's a great chance to showcase their skills and prove they are worth the money and maybe the new contract. They are better motivated than starters and more efficient. I decided to against Venezia because I saw they are slowly hitting the wall - Venezia has no depth and the players were playing a lot recently. Valencia has staunch, hard to crack defense and I just knew Venezia will have problems on the offensive side.

Today Valencia is playing without van Rossum, San Emeterio is on the bench but didn't log any minutes, Hamilton, Sikma and Dubljevic are (one more time) on minutes restriction (none of them played more than 7 min. in 1st half) and Valencia is leading at the half 26:33. A win is useless for Venezia - even when they win, they stay at 3rd place in the standings. Look at Galatasaray and Zenit - those teams didn't have to win today but they did.

The only thing that worries me is -5.5 spread, it would be better if it was at -3.

Stats after 1st half:

1-3 in free plays but 6-1 in premium (+4.6u).

Saratov -3 - L
Aris -5 - W
Valencia -5.5 - L
Vilnius TT Under 79 - L

TBL: Turów Zgorzelec -4.5 - 1 unit (1.87)

Kutno never won with Zgorzelec since team team have joined Polish basketball league. Kutno is 0-3 SU and 1-2 in last three games while Zgorzelec is 3-2 SU and ATS in L5. Zgorzelec was loosing game after game in FIBA Cup but in domestic league is on 4 game winning streak. Home team is 3-1 ATS as home favorite in TBL. Zgorzelec -4.5 (C)

ProA: Nanterre -3.5 - 1 unit (1.95)

Le Havre (1-9 SU, 3-7 ATS in ProA) is hosting Nanterre (6-4 SU, 3-7 ATS). Away team is on short 1-day rest after Eurocup loss to Oldenburg (83:92), home team had 4 days to prepare for this game. Le Havre has second worst defense in ProA (117.3 DRtg). Nanterre is shooting the ball better (.537 to .486). Le Havre is too unreliable to back them now even in the schedule spot they are in. Nanterre -3.5 (C)

Euroleague: Kuban/Pinar Karsiyaka Under 147.5 - 1 unit (1.93)

Pinar is 2-5 SU and 0-7 ATS in their L7 games in BSL and Euroleague. Pinar is 1-5 O/U in L6 Euroleague. Pinar ORtg in Euroleague is abysmal (93.5) and their eFG% is the worst in Euroleague at .455. Kuban knows how to play defense (95.1 DRtg in EL), Russian team is playing at very slow pace (83.7). O/U record in last five Kuban games in Euroleague is 0-4-1. All 4 Pinar EL games ended with the under result. Kuban/Pinar Karsiyaka Under 147.5 (B)

I like the Under 154.5 in Tel Aviv tonight. Big game for Maccabi, Bamberg will try to slow things down - should be a low scoring game.

I was thinking of Bamberg +5 but 5 points may be too little on the road. Will look at this in a minute.

I was busy all day. Will be back tomorrow with some picks.

Euroleague: Zielona Góra TT Over 65.5 - 1 unit (1.90)

Panathinaikos is conceding 71 pts in last five games. Zielona Góra is scoring 66 in their last five games. The number is where it should be. Zielona Góra TT Over 65.5 points (C)

Euroleague: Strasbourg TT Under 75 points - 1 unit (1.89)

Strasbourg is scoring 69 points on avg in Euroleague. In Moscow Strasbourg scored only 62 points. Khimki has 3rd best defense in Euroleague. Opposing teams are shooting only .443 eFG% against Russian team. Strasbourg is in bottom five in eFG% and in ORtg. Strasbourg TT Under 75 (C)

First part of my Saturday card - early games:

BSL: Usak +4 - 1 unit (1.95)

Turk Telekom (1-7 SU, 3-5 ATS) badly needs a win in Turkish league. Turk Telekom won all group games in FIBA Cup but have paid for these wins a high price in domestic league. Turk Telekom doesn't have the roster depth to keep up with other teams in all competitions. Now there is a break between the first and second stage of FIBA Cup and Turk Telekom can focus on domestic league. Too bad they will be playing with red hot Usak (6-2 SU, 7-1 ATS) that is playing really well as underdog (6-1 ATS in BSL) and on the road (3-1 ATS). Usak is 4-1 SU and 5-0 ATS in their L5. Usak +4 (B)

BSL: Kolejliler +6 - 1 unit (1.95)

Besiktas is clearly in deep crisis - the team have lost 7 games straight up and against the spread in Eurocup and Turkish league. Their rival - Kolejliler is on 3 game winning streak (SU and ATS). Kolejliler is 3-1 ATS in away games and 5-1 as dog in Basketbol Super Ligi. Kolejliler have covered against the spread in games played on the road versus some good teams (Fenerbahce, Galatasaray, Banvit, Buyukcekmece and Pinar Kariyaka). Kolejliler +6 (B)

TBL: Tarnobrzeg +15 - 1 unit (1.96)

Włocławek have lost on the road in Słupsk as five point underdog and is returning home to play one of the weakest teams in Polish league. This sounds like a scenario of a blowout and the early line movement confirms it with the move from -14.5 to -15. I will take a contrarian approach. Włocławek is bad versus the spread as big favorite 0-3-1 ATS in current season. Tarnobrzeg is 4-1 ATS as dog. They have won two games outright as road underdog and are coming off a road win as -5.5 point fav in Lublin. Tarnobrzeg is a team nobody is counting on and because of that they are predestined to make another surprise. In previous season Tarnobrzeg lost 82:78 at Włocławek as +10.5 dog and won at home 83:75 as -5.5 point fav. Tarnobrzeg +15 (C)

Second part of my big Saturday card - late games:

BBL: Frankfurt +2 - 1 unit (1.92)

So, fantastic 13-game winning streak has ended for Frankfurt with a home loss to ALBA Berlin. The schedule is favorable to Skyliners team though as they will be rested after 5 day break versus talented but very young Ulm team (24 years of age avg) that played on Wednesday an Eurocup game vs Zaragoza. Ulm is very mediocre as home favorite (2-3 ATS in BBL). Frankfurt (8-3 SU and ATS) is 4-1 ATS in away games and 5-1 ATS as an underdog in Bundesliga. Line for the home team opened at -3 and moved since to -2. Frankfurt won 4 games outright as an underdog in BBL and is in good spot for the fifth ATS win. Frankfurt +2 (B)

ACB: Manresa +8 - 1 unit (1.96)

Monbus (5-4 SU, 6-3 ATS) is 4-1 ATS at home in Spanish ACB. Monbus have covered at home versus not-so-good teams like Sevilla, Zaragoza, Gipuzkoa and one solid squad (Joventud). The biggest spread was versus Gipuzkoa (-8.5). Manresa (4-5 SU, 5-4 ATS) as 8 points road underdog got almost the same amount of points like Gipuzkoa (the worst team in ACB with only one win). This is hard to justify even knowing that Monbus at home is tough to beat. Manresa was able to cover as road dog at Andorra and at Canarias as +7.5 dog. Monbus 78, Manresa 71. Manresa +8 (C)

Pro A: Chalons +8.5 - 1 unit (1.99)

Dijon (7-3 SU and ATS) has won and covered in three games in a row. Dijon is playing really well in French ProA. Home team is 4-0 ATS in home games and 5-1 ATS as fav. They are also 5-2 ATS coming off a win. Chalons should be extra motivated after two straight losses at Monaco and vs Nanterre at home. Chalons (5-6 SU, 6-5 ATS) is for the second season undervalued - they were favored only in 2 games during current season. In 2014/2015 season Chalons have won 17 games and posted impressive 21-12 ATS record. Currently Chalons is 5-4 ATS as dog overall and 3-2 as away dog. Eight points should be enough to cover. Chalons +8.5 (C)

Season 119-107-2 (+2.85u)

VTB: Enisey Krasnoyarsk -3.5 - 1 unit (1.86)

Eleven days ago Enisey have won with Kalev in FIBA Cup 87:91 on the road and covered versus the spread as 1 point favorite. Enisey won also at home with Estonian team 77:70. Enisey is 3-0 SU/ATS in their last three games. Kalev is trying hard to win in VTB but they just can't keep up with other clubs. Kalev (3-7 SU/ATS in VTB) is 0-5 SU and ATS in their L5. Kalev is 2-6 as un underdog in VTB. In 2014 Kalev lost at home with Enisey 66:111. Enisey -3.5 (B)

LagaA: Sassari/Juvecaserta Under 152.5 (1.97)

After replacing coach Sacchetti with coach Calvani Sardegna Sassari is playing a little bit slower and the players are paying more attention to defense. Sassari last three games stayed under the total (at Capo D'Orlando, at Tel Aviv, vs Trento). Caserta still has the best DRtg in LegaA (94.4). Opposing teams are shooting 39% from the field against Caserta. Caserta is 3-6 O/U in Italian league. Veteran F Amoroso is back in the lineup. Sassari/Juvecaserta Under 152.5 (C)

ACB: Tenerife -3.5 -1 unit (1.93)

Tenerife is 4-1 SU and ATS since Txus Vidorreta replaced coach Martinez. Tenerife is on four game winning streak (Gran Canaria, Fuenlabrada, Manresa, Vitoria). Zaragoza (2-6 SU, 5-3 ATS) is on three game winning streak (Nancy, Estudiantes and Ulm). Zaragoza is 3-1 ATS as road dog. Home team is on 6-day rest, while away team is on short 3-day rest. Tenerife has the momentum, home court advantage and is in favorable schedule spot. Tenerife -3.5 (C)

BBL: Wurzburg +6.5 - 1 unit (1.94)

Wurzburg didn't play any games since seven days. During that span Oldenburg played three games - at Bonn, at Nanterre and on Friday at home vs Bremerhaven. Oldenburg finished the week 3-0 SU but it is highly unlikely that the North German team will continue to perform on such a high level. On Wednesday Oldenburg has scheduled Eurocup game with Ljubljana. Oldenburg is 4th in group A standings with a chance to advance to the next stage. Oldenburg may be today not only fatigued but also in a lookahead spot. Oldenburg is 0-4 ATS as home favorite in Bundesliga. Wurzburg is having great season so far (8-2 SU, 5-5 ATS) and in road dog role they are 2-1 versus the spread. Wurzburg +6.5 (B)

Season (121-109-2 (+2.73u)

LegaA: Cremona +3.5 - 1 unit (1.93)

Key trends for this game: Cremona is 6-0 SU and ATS in their last six games in LegaA. Cremona is 4-1 ATS in away games in LegaA. Cremona is 5-1 ATS as an underdog in LegaA. Cremona is 5-1 ATS when coming off a win. Cantu is 1-4 ATS in home games in LegaA and is horrible on defense (111.3 DRtg). Cremona +3.5 (B)

ProA: Cholet +7.5 - 1 unit (1.96)

For Cholet it will be the second game under new head coach Jerome Navier. Cholet (2-9 SU, 4-7 ATS) is 3-2 ATS as away dog. Paris-Levallois (3-8 SU/ATS) is also desperately looking for some wins. Paris is just 1-4 SU/ATS in their last five games. Struggling Paris will be in a big favorite role today. Paris is just 2-5 against the spread when coming off a loss. Both teams had over a week to prepare for this meeting. Cholet +7.5 (C)

Main stage of FIBA Europe Cup stats today. I'm not sure if this young Aris team will be able to cover as 3.5 fav versus top Turkish team, so I took an under.

Eurocup: Aris/Banvitspor Under 152 - 1 unit (1.93)

Aris Thessaloniki is 1-8 O/U overall and 0-4 O/U in home games in Eurocup. Banvitspor Bandirma is coming off a win and in this spot Turkish team is 1-3 O/U in Eurocup. Currently both teams are on 4-game under run. Banvit is on 2-day rest after tough game with Galatasaray, so a letdown is possible. There was no games scheduled in Greek league this weekend, so Banvit will face rested and well prepared Aris team in revenge spot at Alexandreio - one of the toughest basketball venues to play in whole Europe. Both teams are shooting below 43% from the field in Eurocup. Aris is the best team in Eurocup at limiting opposing teams in scoring (.458 eFG%). Under 152 (B)

FIBA Cup: Pieno žvaigždes +8 - 1 unit (1.95)

Le Havre should focus on ProA rather instead of trying to win meaningless FIBA Cup games. In domestic league Le Havre is 1-11 SU and 3-9 ATS and with this kind of record we're getting them as 8 point favs which is super cool. French team is coming off 2 straight losses (SU and ATS) in domestic league to Nanterre and Nancy. Pieno was just 1-4-1 ATS in the first stage of FIBA Cup but Lithuanian team never got so many points as underdog. This will definitely help young Pieno to cover against the spread. Pieno žvaigždes +8 (C)

FIBA Cup: Juventus Utena +6 - 1 unit (1.98)

On Saturday Mons won and covered versus Leuven on the road. Before that win Mons was on 0-3 ATS run. In first stage Mons finished at 3-3 SU/ATS record but was perfect 3-0 ATS at home. Juventus Utena is 9-6 SU and 6-9 ATS in LKL. They beat some solid teams (Siaulai twice, Nevezis, Neptunas). Utena advanced to second round of FIBA Cup with 2-4 SU and 3-3 record. Juventus was 0-3 ATS as an underdog outside LKL. Statistically Lithuanian team is not that far from Belgian team. Projected score: Mons wins 79:75. Juventus Utena +6 (C)

I found a cool stat:

Off.Reb.

Utena 11.0 avg
Mons 6.0 avg

Turnovers

Utena 12.7 avg
Mons 17.3 avg

That's +10 possessions advantage for Juventus but of course Mons shoots the ball better and Juventus had easier schedule so you'll never know what is going to happen...

Eurocup: Gran Canaria +3 - 1 unit (1.91)

Reggio Emilia hosts Gran Canaria in a battle for first place in Group B. Reggio Emilia needs to win by 10 or more points in order to overcome 9-point loss suffered in Las Palmas. I don't see home team winning by such a big margin over very solid Spanish team. Reggio is 3-6 ATS in Eurocup and 1-3 ATS as home favorite. Gran Canaria was doing well in away games up to date, going for 3-1 ATS record in Eurocup. Even if Reggio lose this game and ALBA Berlin win with Brindisi, it will not change Reggio's situation in the standings (they will remain at 3rd place). Gran Canaria +3 (B)

Eurocup: Kazan -3.5 - 1 unit (1.95)

Kazan is obviously a stronger team than Trabzon. Kazan has better players, deeper roster, stingy defense and ok offense. Trabzon has a small advantage in three points shot percentage and that's all. To take first place in Group C Trabzon needs to win by 19 points which is completely unrealistic. At some point during the game Turkish team will probably wave a big white flag. The only question is: will Kazan be able to cover against the spread? Kazan (B)

Eurocup: Galatasaray +2 - 1 uit (1.98)

Galatasaray needs a victory to secure the first place in the Group F. Nizhny Novgorod is not playing well since a week or two. In their L5 games Novgorod is 2-3 SU and 1-4 ATS in VTB league and Eurocup. Galatasaray is 2-1 ATS in away games in Eurocup and 1-0 ATS as dog. In last five games Galatasaray was 2-1-1 against the spread. Turkish team has the second best ORtg in Eurocup (118.5). Galatasaray +2 (C)

Braunschweig - Tubingen:

0.4 seconds to play, 81 - 79. Total was 161 points.
Is there any chance it wasn't a fix?

Very possible. Hard to find a rational explanation for something like this. Too bad it happened in German league which in recent 2-3 years have mad huge progress in terms of sport talent, quality of coaching, management, revenue generating, PR and so on. I'm very curious if the league is going to investigate this incident and punish the player.

Fixing basketball games was very frequent in the 80's. UNLV coach Jerry Tarkanian, who passed away in February 2015, used to gamble in Las Vegas casinos on his own team performance and every couple of years we're hearing news about college basketball players involved in point shaving scandals. Some of them are continuing their 'careers' overseas - it's seems Garlon Green is one of those guys.

Of course he has. I checked in my database - he came to Tubingen from Kumamoto in 'pro' Japanese league. That league is a joke. I have watched some of the games played in Japan and the feel I had was like: 'WTF is this, it's an exhibiton game or what', it was like a bad parody of Harlem Globetrotters. That's why I never ever bet on Asian, Middle East and South American basketball leagues. Unfortunately it can happen everywhere.

What is especially painful for me is that the play he run was the famous play Michael Jordan has invented and mastered - the same famous play every basketball fan around the world knows and loves. And he used it AGAINST his own team and against integrity of the game. Hard to find a bigger blasphemy than this.

Last round of Euroleague takes place today. Lots of meaningless games today and weird lines on the board. I'm really not sure if Maccabi can pull out a road win in Turkey and advance to next phase. I don't like the numbers so I'm taking day off but already have my Friday card ready. I'm still looking at Dijon as road dog.

BBL: Ludwigsburg +4 - 1 unit (1.96)

Wurzburg (9-2 SU, 6-5 ATS) is having fantastic season but this team is also hugely overrated. Wurzburg has 0 wins over top Bundesliga teams. Team from Bavaria still has to play with Bayern, ALBA, Bamberg, Ulm and Ludwigsburg. On Sunday Wurzburg won with fatigued Oldenburg squad. Wurzburg is coming off a win and in that spot they are 3-5 ATS (they were 2-5 ATS before the game with Oldenburg). Ludwigsburg (9-2 SU, 7-4 ATS) is on fire recently, winning lots of games in Eurocup and BBL. On Wednesday Ludwigsburg crushed Le Mans 90:49. Wurzburg has home court advantage and is rested but Ludwigsburg is better and deeper team and they are pumped up after 3 SU/ATS wins in a row. Ludwigsburg +4 (B)

Euroleague: Crvena Zvezda ML - 1 unit (1.59)

Huge game for both teams, as Munich and Belgrade still have a chance to advance to the next stage. To advance one of the teams has to win outright. The game will be played in Pionir Arena, one of the toughest, most hostile places for road teams to play basketball in Europe. Because of that Crvena Zvezda has big advantage. At home Crvena Zvezda can ball with anybody as they proved by beating Khimki Moscow despite 28 points from Shved. This will be a crazy game in which every point will be of huge importance, so I would advice to bet on moneyline instead of spread. Crvena Zvezda ML (B)
