Here’s a look at the current class of commitments and who I predict they will add by NSD. Obviously things are fluid, so expect this to change. But here’s my take right now. I stuck with 27 signees, once again.
QB: TBD
I honestly don’t know who the quarterback in this class might be, because this could go in a few different directions. I can confirm that they are looking at graduate transfers and high school seniors right now, with the latest name to surface being Rutgers QB commitment Anthony Russo. I’ve heard a couple other names that are being kept quiet by the staff, but I had mentioned QB’s being looked at that were currently committed to the SEC, ACC and Big 10. Russo was the Big 10 guy I was referencing. I think that we see them put out feelers with a number of national guys, and they very could well come back to Louisiana closer to NSD. I do think they get a QB in this class, so I think that scholarship will be spent. I’m just not sure we can know - or even LSU knows - who that guy will be right now.
RB: Devin White
LSU went all-in on White as the lone running back they recruited in this class, and I’m feeling confident that he chooses the Tigers whenever he makes an announcement. He doesn’t currently have anything set up, but White does still plan to graduate here soon and enroll in a college in January.
TE: Jamal Pettigrew
Texas and Florida have made a big push for Pettigrew, but he hasn’t taken a ton of visits or talked up other programs yet. We will see what his January schedule looks like, and LSU does plan to host Pettigrew and his family for an official visit then. For now, he appears solid after being one of the first guys to commit in this class. He’s a really versatile tight end who the staff has always been really high on. They are still recruiting some tight ends, including a couple JUCO guys and some high school guys like Irvin Smith at Brother Martin and Nick Eubanks down at American Heritage in Florida. But for now, I think Pettigrew will be the lone tight end in the class.
WR: Dee Anderson, Da’Monte Coxie, Drake Davis
Anderson is set to enroll at LSU next month. He’s maintained that he’s solid to LSU and it doesn’t look like there will be any last second change of heart. Coxie has been committed since the staff offered him this summer, and his recruitment stayed quiet until this week when Alabama offered. While Coxie maintains that he’s on board with the Tigers, I wouldn’t be surprised if he made a visit to Tuscaloosa in January. LSU will obviously be monitoring that, and they will certainly host Coxie and his family on an official visit in January. I think they do wind up with a third receiver in the class, though I think they have some good depth there and it’s not a necessity. Following his official visit to LSU and work that will have to be done in January, I will put Davis in this round of the prediction piece. I think it’s really close between LSU and Ole Miss, and his mom will be in his ear about wanting him back in Baton Rouge. January will be huge here. Stephen Sullivan is obviously the front runner for a spot in the class, and he’s set to announce at some point here soon (was going to be Friday, but he pushed it back) between LSU, Mississippi State and TCU. I know LSU has done a lot to try to get him back on board, but he maintained that the Tigers were the No. 3 team after the visit. He may be trying to drum up some drama around his announcement, but I think one of these out-of-state teams really has his ear. The Bulldogs certainly closed strong with the final in-home with Dan Mullen and his staff.
OL: Donavaughn Campbell, Jakori Savage, Willie Allen, Jean Delance
Jeff Grimes always has a surprise or two in store this time of year, and I think Delance might be the guy this time. LSU and Michigan are apparently now his top two, which is surprising to most for the one-time Oklahoma commitment who seemed all but a lock to wind up staying home and signing with Texas. The Tigers and Wolverines hosted Delance the final two weekends of the open-contact period, and Miles and Grimes both went in-home with the family again last week. We will keep our ear to the ground on where things stand there. Allen is a guy who we’ve felt has been trending back towards LSU for a while. Georgia got their official visit in just before the dead period, and LSU is expected to host him in January. He will be at the Under Armour Game in a couple of weeks, so we will get the latest on his January schedule then. Another guy to keep an eye on is John Simpson. Grimes and Kevin Steele have been working the South Carolina native hard, and he made an official visit to LSU already. Miles also went in-home with Simpson last week. Mississippi’s Scott Lashley and Greg Eiland are a couple other January visitors to keep an eye on.
DL: Edwin Alexander, Glen Logan, Andre Anthony, Caleb Roddy, Rashard Lawrence, D’Andre Christmas-Giles, Sci Martin
Lawrence hinted that he might not make many visits in January, meaning he probably has a good idea of where he wants to sign to play his college football. I’ve always felt it came down to LSU and Alabama, and I think the work done by Ed Orgeron and Bradley Dale Peveto was big enough for the Tigers to win out here. The other two linemen I think they add is Christmas-Giles, who was offered this past weekend, and Martin. Martin is committed to TCU, but I think a big press from LSU in January could really shake things up. I’m told Orgeron likes him a lot. I’m also being rather conservative this time around, as I’ve left off the big out-of-state names on the defensive line that Orgeron is after. But, I don’t want to count him out when it comes to pulling in big names on the recruiting trail, so it’s worth mentioning that he’s still very much in the mix with a number of other guys. Alabama commit Raekwon Davis, five-star Rashan Gary and four-star Brian Burns are three guys that Orgeron went in-home with last week before the dead period arrived. We will certainly see him hit the trail hard in January as he tries to bring in as many guys as he can on those three weekends.
LB: Erick Fowler, Rahssan Thornton, Micheal Divinity, Travez Moore
I’m surprised that I’m saying this at this stage, but I think they hold on to both Texas commits in Fowler and Thornton. I always thought that with the pressure to stay home, Fowler would wind up at Texas. But the staff has done a great job of staying after him, and his message has been the same. Even though his parents prefer he stay home and play for the Longhorns, he wants to play for LSU. I’m also predicting Divinity to be back in this class once he announces in early January. He’s a guy they feel like will compete for a starting job right away, no doubt. They are still after a bunch of other linebackers, and I think the two big guys who they are still very much in it with are Jaleel Laguins and Jeffrey McCulloch. It will be interesting to see how their tone is come January when things really take off. But on this go-around, I left them off the list. I went with Moore in the class. Grades are the thing holding him back from being able to commit, but if they are in position where a free spot is there, he would be a sign-and-place candidate.
DB: Saivion Smith, Eric Monroe, Greedy Williams, Cameron Lewis, Kristian Fulton, Trayvon Mullen
It looks like Smith, Monroe, Williams and Lewis are all solid right now, and I’m still rolling with the same two guys I’ve had on the prediction piece for a long time in Fulton and Mullen. I know it’s a tough task for them to convince both guys to join the class, but Corey Raymond keeps being able to sell these guys on the reality the best players will play. Fulton will announce at Under Armour, and the teams to watch for are Arkansas and Florida. Mullen doesn’t plan to announce until Signing Day, and LSU remains penciled in as the final school he will visit in January before NSD. Deontay Anderson will also visit that weekend, but I think Ole Miss still holds the edge there. Raymond did go in-home with him during the open-contact period. A name worth monitoring as well is Nigel Warrior. The Georgia safety will visit LSU next month and got an in-home visit from Raymond last week.
K: Connor Culp
Culp, the No. 7 kicker in the country, is the only specialist that I expect to be on scholarship in this class
