Thiago Silva out of UFC 89 bout with Lyoto Machida

Undefeated UFC light-heavyweight contender Thiago Silva (13-0 MMA, 4-0 UFC) has been forced out of his UFC 89 co-headlining bout with fellow undefeated contender Lyoto Machida (13-0 MMA, 5-0 UFC) after sustaining a back injury.

Our friends at fiveouncesofpain.com first reported the withdrawal, and MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) was able to confirm the change with sources close to the fighter.

An American Top Team fighter, Silva has had an impressive run in the UFC since his May 2007 debut with the organization. His four wins over James Irvin, Tomasz Drwal, Houston Alexander and Antonio Mendes have all come via stoppage -- three by TKO and one by submission.

Machida has been equally successful in his tenure with the UFC. His often-debated style of attack has led to four decisions in his five UFC victories, the most recent in May at UFC 84 over Tito Ortiz.

Many MMA pundits believed the winner of a bout between Silva and Machida would be the clear-cut No. 1 contender in the UFC's talent-laden light-heavyweight division. Former champion Chuck Liddell has stated publicly he believes a win over Rashad Evans at tomorrow night's "UFC 88: Breakthrough" would establish "The Iceman" as next in line for a shot at the title.

The UFC has yet to issue a formal announcement, and it is unknown whether a replacement has been identified for the Oct. 18 card in Birmingham, England.
 
With Lyoto Machida out of UFC 89, December or January return possible

With original opponent Thiago Silva injured and with the Ultimate Fighting Championship unable to secure a new opponent, light heavyweight contender Lyoto Machida (13-0 MMA, 5-0 UFC) has been pulled from the UFC 89 fight card completely.

His manager, Ed Soares, today told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) that UFC VP of Talent Relations Joe Silva expects Machida to return in December or January.

More than likely, Machida, who most recently defeated Tito Ortiz for his fifth consecutive win in the UFC, won't get a title shot in his next fight.

With his stunning knockout of Chuck Liddell this past weekend at UFC 88, Rashad Evans secured the next shot at current champ Forrest Griffin's belt. And, even with the new layoff, Machida is unlikely to face the winner of that fight -- not until he gets another victory, anyway.

"I think we'll definitely need to win one more before [Machida] gets a title shot," Soares said.

Although Machida's sometimes-elusive fighting style and propensity to take fights to decisions have been criticized, Machida has found phenomenal success during his five-year pro career. In addition to UFC wins over Ortiz, Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou, Kazuhiro Nakamura, David Heath and Sam Hoger, Machida also owns victories over the likes of Stephan Bonnar, Rich Franklin and B.J. Penn in outside organizations.

the machida/silva fight was the one I was looking forward to the most on this card. No one in the LHW division wants to fight Machida and now he has to sit on the sidelines while two undeserving fighters fight for the belt....

i like Bisping, Vera, Sokoudjou, Lytle ..... although those are just quick picks, and i will probably not be betting any of these fights.... i don't see much worth taking a shot at the moment...

Yes, I will be all over anything under -200 and probably a lil up to -250. This is not the greatest matchup for him and hes going to have to cut weight for the first time ever I think. But I still think he can dominate most of the 205 class standing and hang with anyone. I really like him at 205:shake:

you know that I'm the biggest Vera homer. The only thing that scares me is I saw how shitty he looked in his first fight at 205. You would think he would be better this time cause he doesn't have to drop as much as he did. But we have nothing to back that up by. I hope he wins though just a lil scared. I may even through a bit on it.:shake:

cane was opened at +155 and bet down immediately. im confident hes a better fighter than soko, but im sitting tight. soko will get bet and i hope cane goes back up above +150, cause i did not get down fast enough. i don't care for either side at pickem.

i like jardine, i know there are several vera fans here. please tell me why you think he deserves to be favored. i dont think think vera brings enough heat to do what houston and wandy did (1st round demolition), and the longer the fight goes you would have to give the advantage to jardine, right?
 
i agree with your assessment of the matchup, however I think Vera has a lot to prove coming off a lackluster performance in his debut as 205. I think will be just as explosive at 205 as Wand and Houston. He has a good chin and definitely stronger striking than Jardine. I could see Jardine winning a counter-punching decision as he did vs Chuck, but I think its very unlikely that this goes past the 2nd rd. This is a make or break fight for Vera who has been overhyped his whole career and has to prove himself.

After the two losses at heavyweight, Vera took a 205-pound fight against Reese Andy at UFC Fight Night 14 back in July. He won the bout with a decision but didn’t look very sharp while doing it, attributing the lackluster performance to the weight cut. Broken Hand, bad stoppage and weight cut: All reasons (and not saying they aren’t valid) Vera has used to explain his three most recent performances … none of which include money. Let’s see which Brandon Vera shows up on October 18 and whether or not White may be onto something or Vera has indeed been the victim of misfortune.

Bisping might be more well rounded per se but he doesn't have the ability to keep Leben down... not that I think it'll be on the ground for very long. Bisping is quick and might be able to frustrate Leben on his feet but Leben has the KO power. I give Leben the edge- Leben should grind out a decision or more likely a wild KO. Leben, 3u @ +180.

havent seen the fight but know the result. I agreed with u then and agree with u now, but never thought this would go the distance.
