Is there a chance he'd take us back?

The rumor is that Marvin Harrison isn't really even that motivated to play football at this point.

I have no desire to see Harrison come in. I, like everybody else, want Boldin.

<!-- end mod-article-title --><!-- begin story body --><!-- template inline -->Seven-time Pro Bowl wide receiver Torry Holt has asked the St. Louis Rams for his release, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported, citing league sources.

Holt

<!-- INLINE HEADSHOT (END) -->
Holt, who has one year left on his current contract, is due a roster bonus of $1.25 million on March 17, making it unlikely he'll remain on the roster beyond that date. The Rams could trade him between now and then. But a number of other free-agent wide receivers have already signed deals, limiting the remaining market.
Trading or releasing Holt would save the Rams $8 million on the salary cap this season, according to the report.
Holt, 32, is currently 11th in NFL history in career receptions, with 869, and 14th all-time in career receiving yards with 12,660. His 817 receptions for 11,872 yards are the most of any receiver this decade, and his 80.1 average yards per game is the most for any receiver in league history.
But 2008 was a down year in every way for Holt, who saw his string of eight 1,000-yard seasons snapped as the Rams struggled to a 2-14 record and fired coach Scott Linehan after four games. He caught 64 passes for 796 yards and a career-low three touchdowns in 2008.
Holt could not be reached for comment on Wednesday, while Rams GM Billy Devaney said "Our only comment is no comment," the Post-Dispatch reported.

SPRINGS TO SIGN WITH PATS

Posted by Mike Florio on March 5, 2009, 2:50 p.m.
Last year, the New England <nobr style="font-weight: normal; font-size: 100%;" id="itxt_nobr_0_0">Patriots</nobr> lost a cornerback to Philadelphia, when Asante Samuel jumped to the Eagles on the first day of free agency.
This year, the Pats have managed a small measure of revenge, winning the two-team derby with the Eagles for the services of veteran corner Shawn Springs.
According to Shalise Manza Young of the Providence Journal, Springs is expected to sign with the Patriots.
Springs was released last Friday by the Redskins.

Why does it seem Eagles are just sitting on their asses when there are top free agents out in the market.

we have flexibility!!!

Which is, of course, the difference between a gymnast and an amateur porn star, one maximizes their potential, the other does not.

That said, the Pats can have Springs.

The irony in that trade is Lewis has had 2 decent games in his career....the Super Bowl and the AJ Feely game vs. the Undefeated Pats

I wonder what they gave up...

a 7th rounder?

Eagles Trade WR Lewis To Patriots

March 5, 2009 | Last Updated: 3/5/09 4:06 PM ET | Comments (0)
By: CHRIS McPHERSON

Two of the biggest games of Greg Lewis' career came against the New England Patriots.

Now he's one of them.

The Eagles dealt Lewis on Thursday to New England along with an undisclosed draft pick in 2010 in return for an undisclosed pick in this year's draft. A rookie free agent in 2003, Lewis carved out a nice career with the Eagles catching 127 passes for 1,699 yards and seven touchdowns in 90 games. This past season, Lewis notched the first 100-yard game of his career in the season opener against the Rams (five catches, 104 yards) and finished the year with 19 catches for 247 yards and one touchdown.

It was against the Patriots in Super Bowl XXXIX where he became the first wide receiver in Eagles history to catch a touchdown pass in the championship game. Lewis' 30-yard touchdown pass in the fourth quarter brought the Eagles within three points. Against the undefeated Patriots in 2007, Lewis caught four passes for 88 yards and two touchdowns as the Eagles nearly pulled off the upset.

Lewis' best season came in 2005 when he was a full-time starter. He caught 48 passes for 561 yards and a touchdown while starting in all 16 games. The following year, 20 of Lewis' 24 catches went for a first down and 13 of those receptions occurred on third down. The Eagles signed Lewis to a five-year contract extension during the 2004 campaign that runs through 2011. With Lewis' departure, there are only five players on the Eagles roster who played in Super Bowl XXXIX - David Akers, Sheldon Brown, Donovan McNabb, Quintin Mikell and Brian Westbrook.

2 things here...

the Eagles probably gave Lewis and 4th rounder next year for like a 5th rounder this year...whatever the terms were, im sure they got burned...

And secondly...theres only FIVE (?!) guys left from the super bowl team????

Unreal

I'm not sure which team makes me want to vomit more right now, the Birds or the Browns, but they both make me want to raid that shoe box full of pills Believe keeps under his bed and pop some pills.

I don't really care that G-Lew is gone, he really wasn't that good. The only WR that seems to be panning out in any way, shape, or form is Avant who is somehow becoming a third down guy with good hands. Which is fine with me. It's also why we could really use that big number one. Boldin (or Braylon) at one, Desean at two, Curtis/Avant at three. That's one hell of a passing game and there's some depth to it.

But it simply makes too much sense for the Eagles to do it so it'll never happen (hint, reverse psychology at work).

Wait, I'm sorry, I just read this again.

The Eagles dealt Lewis on Thursday to New England along with an undisclosed draft pick in 2010 in return for an undisclosed pick in this year's draft.

Another draft pick this year? That's 12.

One of two things is going to happen. We're going to ship off about four of these between now and the draft, or we're going to hold them all, trade Donovan, bring back Garcia for one-to-two years and completely rebuild the roster through the draft. Which, of course, could never go wrong given our track record in the draft.

I dont know what we're rebuilding...theres only FIVE guys left from the Super Bowl team...seems like its been rebuilt already

Just for scorekeeping purposes, here's the picks they have (I think...)

2 firsts (21, 28)
1 second (53)
1 third (85)
1 fourth (117)
4 fifths (133, 145, 149, 151)
2 sixths (181, 182)
1 seventh (213)

in my mind, the fifths, sixths and sevenths are pretty much worthless and only usable if your trading up to sweeten the pot

something like my third and a fifth to move up 8 spots in the third...

Not that it fucking matters, these assholes couldnt draft a (insert insulting witty analogy here)

Thats the draft point value chart most NFL teams follow....

So...just going by that chart...the 21 and the 28 can get you up to 7 (Crabtree? Yes please!)

Then youd have like your 3rd and a fifth move you up 8 spots in the 3rd (my guess was right...scary)

Your fourth and a fifth moves you up 15 spots in the fourth....

basically a bunch of crap

Well, if we had faith in the Eagles, we'd love having a plethora of late round picks. But, of course, we don't, so what we want them to do is use them to trade up so they have less chance of screwing up yet another draft

I'm honestly confused by how hard this is. A team like Cleveland has four f**king picks in the draft. They are obviously rebuilding. They have a new front office. Short of handing Hunt a midget, a roofie, and a six pack of Lifestyles, the situation doesn't get much more self-explanatory.

Trade one of the firsts to Cleveland along with one or two of the late round picks for Braylon--or for their first pick in the draft so you can take Crabtree if you like. Then trade some of your other late picks to move up in the second and/or third rounds. Cleveland gets more picks so their new regime can put their stamp on the roster they're currently gutting, the Eagles get the WR they need, and they get better shots at draft picks that might make the roster rather than making us all bring up Mike Mamula on an annual basis.

That makes entirely too much sense for the Eagles front office to consider it

theyd rather prove theyre 'savvy' and find some diamonds in the rough that is the 5th round of the NFL draft...even though they cant find em in the second or third or anyother round...

i broke down reids draft record in some thread around here a little while ago...

basically they had one good year...everything else has been a borderline trainwreck

Found it...highlighted what i consider to be decent picks

So basically in 10 years, hes had what Id consider 2 good picks in the 5th round or later...Gaither and Cole

Thats it. Thats the list.

2 out of 36...

Though I guess you can consider Celek and Feely 'successes' to a varying degree...and then Raheem Brock...but they couldnt sign him before he caught on with Indy for (ironically enough) cap reasons....but are those types of guys really gonna help this team this year??

So essentially 7 of their 12 picks are worthless this year is I guess what Im trying to say

The more troubling thing is the staggering amount of 2nd and 3rd round busts theyve had...

Barry Gardner...Doug Brezezinski (who the fuck is that?)...Bobby Williams...Quinton Caver...Billy McMullen...Matt Ware...Matt McCoy...Ryan Moats...Winston Justice...Tony Hunt...

These were all 2nd or 3rd round picks!!

Its really phenomenal theyve been able to compete at the level theyve been able to given their draft record

Man, you are a hard grader.

I consider Celek a success. Oddly, I think they gave up on Barksdale way too quick, although I think he might be out of the league so what do I know.

You have to grade Considine well for as much as he played, even if you didn't/don't like him.

I'd also say Buck was an eventual success, those injuries are tough to penalize him for, that's just bad luck, LJ Smith was a success at least for a few years, and, yes, Feeley was a success.

That all said, you're right about the shocking amount of misses in here.

Outside of Desean Jackson (who I think they got lucky with, and are we sure he wasn't a first?) and Michael Lewis and LJ even our second round picks have been awful.

Quentin Carver? Matt Ware? By the way, what's with our thing for Quentins by the way?

Tell you one thing that makes you fear for our draft this year, too, look at last year and a few years back. We had a ton of choices. And what did we do, we stood pat and threw them down the drain.

How we can't realize that a number one, in the hands of this draft crew, is worth far less than Anquan Boldin is beyond me.

JONES TO VISIT EAGLES

Posted by Aaron Wilson on March 5, 2009, 7:10 p.m.

Cleveland <nobr style="font-weight: normal; font-size: 100%;" id="itxt_nobr_16_0">Browns</nobr> unrestricted free agent safety Sean Jones is scheduled to meet with the Philadelphia Eagles on Friday.

Jones is a big, experienced safety at 6-foot-1, 225 pounds with 44 career starts.

For his career, Jones has 286 tackles and three forced fumbles.

Jones’ 14 interceptions since the 2006 season ranks third among NFL safeties behind the Baltimore Ravens’ Ed Reed and the St. Louis Rams’ Oshiomogho Atogwe during that span.

The Browns drafted Jones in the second round out of the University of Georgia in 2004 with the 59th overall pick.

Jones hasn't fallen out of favor with me as he has with lots of Browns fans. I would take him in Philly.

It would be admitting to a mistake with Dawkins, because he's neither as talented or as much of a leader, but he would give us a serviceable trio at safety.

Sean was drafted and immediately broke his leg or blew out a knee or something and had to miss his entire first year in the league.

When he came back he seemed to show hints of being a leader and a playmaker. Problem was the defense seemed to consistently fall apart and so as seasons went on you never knew. Then he seemed to fall out of favor.

Truthfully, in my world, the verdict is still out on this guy. I'm not sure the Browns overall have ever known what they're doing with their defense to know exactly what you're going to get from Jones. That's not to excuse him or anything, but the Browns defensive philosophy for the last four or five years has seemed to be, 'you go out there and play really hard, and if you look like you know what you're doing and you make some plays, we'll keep you out there.'

From ESPNs Scouts Inc:

Comment: Jones is the Browns' starting strong safety. He is big, physical and talented. His season was somewhat up and down in 2007, but he really put himself on the map in 2006 as an impact player. Too many tight ends got behind Jones last season, particularly early in the season, but he remains a formidable starter in this league. While 2007 was somewhat of a down year for Jones, he is still a very consistent producer and one of the more productive safeties in the NFL over the past two seasons. He produces a lot of tackles as an extra defender in the box and intercepts more than his share of passes with excellent anticipation and soft hands. As strong safeties go, Jones has good range and isn't a liability when asked to cover a deep half of the field, but his deep ball skills are still a work in progress. He is an enforcer who hits with power. Against the run, he is an immediate force, but can be too aggressive when dealing with play-action. He also blitzes well. Mentally, Jones is still a work in progress, but from a size, speed and production standpoint, he is impressive and his best work might still be ahead of him.

his deep ball skills are still a work in progress.

Linda Cohen used to say the exact same thing about me. It's just one reason I dumped her ass.

not bad for the 8th wr on your roster

Exactly.

So it looks like the Birds are going to sign Sean Jones (S) from the Browns. I always love when Browns become Birds and Birds become Browns--unless they're washed up and useless like Donte Stallworth.

Assuming this happens, I'm just fine with it. Yes, I miss B-Dawk, but we will have gotten younger at the position (Jones is 27) and collectively we'll still have some good talent there.

kinda weird that its only a one year deal...

must have something to do with the potential of an uncapped year next year

but its a decent signing...i like it

Who Is Sean Jones?

Time to get to know the latest free agent visit, because it's being reported the safety has agreed to a one-year deal with the Eagles.

The 27-year-old and former second round pick out of Georgia was a three year starter at strong safety for the Browns where he actually compiled some impressive numbers, including 14 interceptions, though coverage is surprisingly considered his weakness. At 6'1" and 220 lbs., Jones is a physical safety who is excellent in run support, but he does not have the greatest speed.

However, he does seem to have a nose for the football. He was coming off a knee injury this past season which may have limited his range. Jones was also a quarterback in high school and is said to be intelligent, so maybe he does not have the most athleticism, but understands where he needs to be.

As a one year flier, it's a smart move. Jones hasn't had the opportunity to play in a quality defense, and who knows, maybe he'll shine here. He played free safety in college, so they have the flexibility to keep Mikell at strong if they desire, or flip them. And if they decide Demps is their guy or they choose to go in another direction, Jones is simply gone at the end of the season.

In terms of big time free agent acquisitions, this probably doesn't excite the fanbase, but it's a solid move in wake of the last weekend's disaster.

Exactly. Nobody's going to jump for joy, but it could be a very solid pickup if he stays healthy and gets the system.

Now, go get Boldin and I'm fine with this offseason despite the fact that the front office punched me in the face like I was Rhianna for no earthly reason.

Now thats funny...

(And Im going to defer to your wisdom here given the subject matter, but I think Id rather have Braylon over Boldin?)

Not that id be complaining with either one...

Or a move up to get Crabtree...

Basically I want one of the three catching passes from 5 next year...

I dont care which one

I think your "one of the three" statement is right on.

The only thing that worries me about Crabtree is that I think he's only 6'1". Of course, Boldin isn't much bigger, however, Boldin's proven in the league and Crabby isn't.

Braylon, however is 6'3" so that is obviously something to think about. Problem is, Braylon has yet to prove any consistency. He led the league last year in dropped passes. Yes, more than TO. And they weren't just random drops, they were much like TO, bad drops at bad times.

When Braylon drops balls he tends to do it at a particularly bad time, usually killing a drive. Not so with Boldin, Boldin's generally the opposite. He makes plays to sustain drives. And we need that bad.

I don't foresee Crabtree in Philly, and if we do draft a WR I'm intersested in Nicks from UNC. He's big and has excellent hands. He's very polished and seems ready to go. Teams don't like him because he's not a burner like Heyward-Bay, but if you can make the plays, I'm interested.

MCFADDEN TALKING WITH FOUR TEAMS

Posted by Mike Florio on March 6, 2009, 11:03 p.m.
A week into free agency, cornerback Bryant McFadden still doesn’t have a new home.
Per a league source, McFadden hopes to make a decision soon.
Four teams are in the running: the Steelers, Cardinals, Dolphins, and Eagles.
McFadden, a four-year veteran, appeared in ten regular-season games and started eight of them in 2008. He also started all three postseason games, including Super Bowl XLIII.

TRA THOMAS TO THE JAGS

Posted by Mike Florio on March 9, 2009, 10:24 a.m.
The Eagles have lost another member of their starting lineup.
Left tackle Tra Thomas has agreed to terms with the Jacksonville Jaguars, according to a league source.
[UPDATE: A reader says that our friends at 1010XL radio in Jacksonville are reporting this one as well.]
Thomas, an 11-year veteran with the team, started 16 regular-season games as a rookie in 1998, and he started 16 regular-season games in his last year with the club.
In all, he appeared in 166 games, with 165 starts.

Yeah, I knew Tra was gone a couple of days ago when he first went to Jax. He was asked about his visit and said he really wanted to stay in Philly, but he guessed he had to go some place he was wanted.

Whether he's over the hill or not, I wish this organization would stop needlessly kicking people in the nuts.

Speaking of which, did you see they fired that game-day employee for a comment on his Facebook page about B-Dawk? The extent to which this team is tone-deaf with its fans and the town at times is astounding.
