Friday Discussion Thread

And the Braves pull it out in the 9th.

i guess it was fitting since they did have lead coming into the 9th. I figured fish were screwed once the leadoff hitter got on in front of Acuna, almost expected him to end it right there, what wrong w him only getting a single? lol.

Kim is slated to start Saturday. Him coming back should help our rotation. Then I have heard Mikolas getting closer also. All I know is the sooner they can get Carlos, de Leon, Gant out of starting rotation the better!! Looks like KK is replacing de Leon, I dunno if that the best move or not? Mostly cause I know Gant can be a excellent reliever so rather get that back, no way am I bringing de Leon into a close game out the pen!

tough to find anything on this card without major concerns

Boston should be a bullpen battle and the home team is pretty cheap considering Cease is being activated from the IL to start since he has tested negative for COVID despite having symptoms that got him on there. Probably a run-on, but Pivetta is about as ugly as that sentence

Hoffman also looks cheap, not sure how good Allen is for CLE but CIN bullpen can hang with CLE and there's a huge hitting discrepancy

Don't have a ton of insight on Widener, but fading the Nats does not sound like a bad idea and especially in Scherzer starts since he's aging and the market won't price him that way

Smyly keeps getting close to looking like the high K% LHP, but never seems to make that final step to be trustworthy

sounds like Gant is staying in the rotation for now

yea I knew de Leon was gonna be 1st out, I just don’t agree with it. As I’ve mentioned a few times I tbink Gant living on borrowed time as a starter, he has had guys all over the bases in his starts and has somehow managed to avoid a big inning. That will only last so long. He such a better weapon out the pen where he gets his fastball up into the mid 90s for a inning or 2 and that plays well off that change up. As a starter the change turns into his only plus pitch and since he doesn’t have much more than that and the fastball so won’t be long till teams figure him out imo.

Just as important he a proven commodity out the pen, that Vulcan change gives him the ability to be just as good vs left handed hitters and he has shown capable of coming into high leverage situations. I dunno if del Leon a better starter than him but I know there no chance I’d bring him into a close game in the later innings! His issues all about control, when he has it he a capable pitcher, when he doesn’t he useless. I rather let him start games and have a long guy ready to relieve him if he can’t throw strikes that day, I prefer that to bringing him out the pen in crucial spots.

Eflin should be a guy who gives cards problems with a nice pitch mix including a few good off speed offerings. Martinez in this park just screams meltdown waiting to happen, just can’t trust this guy anymore. It not even game to game with him, it more like from one inning to the next you really don’t know what ya gonna get! I got a bad feeling Harper Will entice Shildt into going to Webb out the pen, that another disaster waiting to happen, no idea why the fuck we trust this guy? He a straight up gas can, if Harper doesn’t hit him you can rest assure the righties around him will!

Man, it gonna be tough to continue playing tribe Ff unders against reds in this band box. I dunno if I can do it?

Both these starters going in Boston tonight walking way too many but there a really strong wind blowing in and really chilly temps. In other conditions I’d be looking at the over here but not with weather being what it is tonight.

Eflin is impossible to predict, CMart seems like he's about done though he was very good just a few years ago i thought

We get San Fran going to Miami which should be a under bettors wet dream and fish throwing some guy that looks like a bum on paper in the opener. To make matter worse he left handed! A lefty throwing high 80s fastballs and sinkers doesn’t seem like a good option against the giants.

he went from being on cusp of a ace to a straight bum. Last few years out the pen he was pretty good but back as a starter last year and now this season you just can’t trust him. He a total head case, the minute anything goes wrong he falls apart. He will have a few innings where he looks dominate but then the wheels fall off, his velo also way down from what it was. I trust Eflin vs our lineup significantly more than Carlos vs phils bats.

Trying to decide how I’m gonna play phils, maybe just eating the juice the way to go? 1st 5 laying the half run might be ok idea but that eliminates the chance to see Phils hit Webb which I’m fairly confident he will make 2 appearances in this series! I just don’t understand why Shildt trust this bum? I know we don’t have many legit lefty options but we have right handers in the pen I feel way better getting both sides out!! Cabrera the only lefty we have that I’d ever bring out the pen cause Webb sucks and Miller was another terrible signing who has never looked like the guy in Cleveland!

CMart's shoulder must have gone, wonder why they haven't put him back in the pen but i guess with low velocity that doesn't equate to much more than a long relief role. Why would he even be used when it matters cuz Shildt can pick a bunch of upper-90s guys who are much younger and part of the future

I don’t understand a lot of things cardinals been doing last few years. Trading Arozarena, Grichuk, and Pham for bags of balls when we in desperate need of outfield help made no damn sense. Continuing to play carpenter despite the fact he prob the worst hitter in baseball is awesome!! Always bringing Webb out the pen just cause he left handed a joke. I know they scared Reyes will get hurt yet again but I dunno why pitching every other day out the pen somehow protecting him more than starting? While he healthy id be starting him, his still has the best stuff on the whole staff! It too late now cause he hasn’t been stretched out. Guess they hoping KK and Mikolas can come back healthy and somewhat solidify the rotation but feel like Mikolas a big if and that still leaves Martinez in the rotation I assume? The cardinal way has pretty much turned into if we gave a player what has turned out to be a bad contract he gonna play regardless how awful he may be! I really think we 3rd at best in the rather weak central. Milw and cincy are def ahead of us imo.

Brewers starting rotation is becoming down right scary. I dunno if their pen is as good it once was but some those starters have turned into straight studs!

money seems to matter, but the rich farm system StL always seemed to have seems like it's dried up and the big money acquisitions have not panned out. Couple that with injuries and you have a middling franchise...

Reyes throwing 100 pitches vs 20 is a much bigger injury risk difference, that should be obvious

The trades seem like they've been made cuz the front office is making bets on Carlson and other young guys that make the ones they have in the bigs redundant. If those don't work out, yikes

thank god for Rockies giving arenado away, without that it would look super bleak.

far as Reyes goes he throwing 20 pitches 3-4 times a week, I dunno that is safer than starting every 5-6 days or not? it woulda been worth the risk imo, cause he still has the stuff to be a dominate starter. We lacking for quality arms in the rotation much more so than in the pen.

They bet on mostly all the wrong young outfielders a huge problem. Carlson the only one who gonna pan out. I’ve never understood their love of Bader? He great in the field but he has so many holes in his swing. O’Neal prob could hit 30+ bombs given the chance all season but he never stays healthy. Forever they insisted on Fowler being part the plan while they were trading those kids. They better prey the lefty pitcher they got from tampa for Arozarena pans out or that trade will look so so stupid! I just wasn’t thrilled to take a young cost controlled pitcher from the rays, if they were willing to part with him that raised a red flag to me cause they know what they doing w pitchers!

they have enough money, problem is they refuse to eat it when they dish out what turns out to be a awful contract, they will continue playing that guy no matter what!! The lineup being suspect nothing new, it just alarming we have seem to run out of all the good pitching we used to be able to bring up. Im sure that a big part the Arozarena trade, Libetore supposed to be that next guy but we shall see.

Are all those Stros players still out?

so Altuve, bregman, Alvarez, and Maldonado all out? That a pretty big dent in their lineup! Brantley probably not gonna be as effective vs the lefty Seattle throwing tonight. Stros been the best lefty hitting team in baseball but gotta believe a huge part that production sitting tonight! Kikuchi has looked really good, I expect he has a pretty good outing here.

Seattle was really good on their road trip taking 3 of 4 from balty after winning a series in minny. Their pitching got it done in Baltimore as they only scored 10 runs in their 3 wins. So the question for me is how effective will Urquidy be? If he good then Ff under seems like the play to me, if not Seattle with the plus money. Kinda lean both Ff u4 and Seattle to win the game.

How much do we buy Matz? I thought halo’s would get to him but they didn’t, now he faces a kc lineup that been smacking lefties around. Might be moot for tonight, looks like that game could get rained out.

Think I would lean over in kc if it wasn’t for the weather but don’t think it worth getting involved when I look at forecast

Padres ML, yanks over, SF under and texas over are what i'm leaning for today; want to back Matz, but like 2dabank, saw the weather

initially leaned the over in the bosox game

didn't copy well;

all the wind directions..pretty heavy wind out to right at Yankee stadium

Padres ML, yanks over, SF under and texas over are what i'm leaning for today; want to back Matz, but like 2dabank, saw the weather

I was def planning on playing some San Fran/Miami unders and prob will sometime this series but don’t think I like fish pitcher tonight vs giants bats. Not huge fan of playing favs and everyone knows I’m into this Marlins team but think giants might be a little cheap in this one. I never had even heard this Castano kid that was part what cards Gave up for Ozuna (obviously alcontera and gallen were the 2 who hurt!! God what I’d give to have those 2 back in stl!).

He has pretty underwhelming stuff even for a lefty, in 6 starts last year he only stuck out little over 3.5 per 9 and walked almost as many! he did manage a 3 era w pretty good ground ball rate but his peripherals look much worse. He only went 5 innings or more in 2 of those starts, and giants hit lefties pretty well so not sure I like his chances here. He doesn’t look like a starting pitcher. I will say one thing, his splits are interesting as he has held righties to a way lower ops than lefties, im not sure that due to small sample or something that will continue?

I do think Desclafani outta be able to limit the fish bats now that they back in this big pitchers park.

like the numbers for Desclafani against the fish batters.. Giants haven't seen Castano and to be fair most of the league hasn't and I like that advantage for the first time around for pitcher. Would have liked it more if they were going West to Miami Thursday to Friday, but they had an additional day to travel. We'll see, just playing a number I like. Small sample at Marlins park but he has pitched well there

I like desclafani here also. Not sold on fish starter but it is a great pitchers park and if fish only score a few prob be in great shape. Gl
