GREAT Thread. Love to see who can pick the upset. How bad is Indiana St?
I personally am too uninformed at the moment to answer that directly, but I can say that they ranked 191 on Sagarin's year end ranking from last year, about as good/bad as UMass or FIU who were 188 and 187 respecitvely.

Would be good to know FCS ATS records or how teams do as a dog and how they do as a favorite if anyone has that information readily available?

These lists do not appear to have been updated since last December if there are any further transfers, I'm not sure they are listed. But in any event they show the volume of player movement and there are bound to be some key moves among them.

semo better be catching 44 or more for me to play them.
I'm not sure K State can remotely score 44 points against SEMO and I expect SEMO to get into the 20s

I believe they will be a top 8-10 FCS team by the end of the season, they're already top 15 now in polls I've seen. Can't see them getting blown out.

crappy iowa state scored 42 last year on them
missouri 59 in 2022
sam houston 52 in 2022

why can KSU not score 44 on them? please help me understand.

SEMO Last 4 VS FBS Foes:
2017 Kansas L 38-16
2018 Ark State L48-21
2019 Missouri L 50-0
2021 Missouri L 59-28
2022 Iowa St L42-10

not saying you are wrong, but would love more context

UIW? any reason why in that matchup traveling to UTEP?

It's very hard to know much about Incarnate Word this year with the players and coaches they lost and how their new transfers are going to fit in. And even with Calzada coming in...I might suspect that Scott and Ward were better QBs in better offense than what they will field this season.

UTEP will already have had a week 0 game in the books and Incarnate Word's recent success last year will probably have UTEP on alert (UIW has beat an FBS team the last 2 years and advanced into the 3rd round of playoffs). UTEP is a pretty veteran team at this point.

Mercer at Ole Miss MERCER COVERED LAST 3 VS SEC FOES

I had Mercer vs Auburn last year and got very very lucky. I recall a 2H weather delay and some improbable 4th quarter Mercer scoring drives landed them the cover that they probably didn't deserve, but playing til the end with big spreads vs a disinterested opponent late can lead to those kind of dog covers.

I don't do matchups duck, I'm strictly situational and there won't be much in the way of situational play in week 1, in the past I've simply loved taking the top level FCS teams (say top 15 teams in the preseason coaches poll give/take) against teams who I perceived to have overperformed the previous season, which KSU and UTEP did imo. This is usually the one shot these teams get against the big boys and whether they are overlooked or not, those teams tend to compete.

SEMO is by far the best version of themselves since I've pretty much followed football, they were dregs forever in that conference, went to a game in Cape Girardeau as a freshman in college and the only thing I took from it was the We Want More Head chant going back n forth on both sides of the stadium. Can't even remember who won, didn't really care lol...would've been '93. They finished strong last season and think they could have beaten the Grizz if the playoff game was in Cape Girardeau. Kstate absolutely overperformed in my book last year, making the Sugar Bowl was unique, time for the hangover this season. I guess they could prove me wrong but I'll pay to see it.

UTEP has a strange start to the season. @Jax St, UIW, @Northwestern, @Arizona to start. UIW is likely the best of those teams ffs but I can see UTEP starting anywhere from 4-0 to 0-4. Another team that overachieved imo last season and I enjoyed betting them but have seen that recipe fail far to often when expectations are high (I'm an Iowa State fan so been there, done that). I think I saw you're on the season win total over and it could be over quickly or take you to the final week imo. They are going to be hard for me to play this year because of the respect they earned last season. UIW comes in ranked 3rd in the coaches poll and love me an in-state game where a projected very good FCS team gets to play an overvalued (again my opinion) FBS team.

A couple early week 1 looks -

Eastern Kentucky at Cincy. EKU could've opened up 2-0 last year but split two MAC games. Cincy is not a MAC team, but 2023 Bearcats do have a lot of new and have game vs Pitt on deck. EKU made the FCS playoff field last season - HC and coordinators return. I am not familiar with the 23 EKU roster, but they should return their QB McKinney

Gardner Webb at App State. App State has game at UNC on deck. GW was a 2022 playoff team and returns 18 starters. GW only lost to Coastal Carolina by 4, were only down 7-14 HT vs Marshall before losing 7-28 and lost to Liberty by just 1. They do have to replace their Conference O POY QB though.

South Carolina State is a pretty poor team, only reason they come to mind is they are taking on Charlotte who has a lot of turnover and were quite disappointing last year.

I think there could be angles for SEMO, like KJ says, they are a team on the upswing. Incarnate Word on the other hand, I don't know. They are ranked where they are for coaches and players that aren't there any more - which they did that last year too. I don't follow FCS real close, but I have a hunch this isn't going to be close to the team they fielded in 2021 or 2022. UIW in 2023 is not better than Northwestern or Arizona and UTEP should most definitely win the game and I'd think by double digits. Now, if this was last year's UIW team ... well, they would likely beat UTEP

agree with alot of this. and honestly SEMO could be worth a look, I just hope we get 44 points.

massey ratings have the spread at 36...again, above 40 and SEMO is a play

I'll buy it 'til it fails, don't think they're going anywhere anytime soon

Couple notes, some could be upsets others maybe just interesting or killer spot and we'll see if they can hang in for a half or so ..

- Holy Cross is gunna play BC like its their super bowl got the total gamer QB back I think .. BC w FSU on deck ..
- Stan steals Sac State's coach .. thinkin likely they show up in that one lol .. no idea if Sack will be Back this year but interesting game for sure .. Also sandwiched after the always huuuuge USC game and UA .. still, think its fair to say this is 100% a MUST WIN for da Tree lol ..
- N.Iowa I think still has their good QB Theo Day .. Iowa State should be fine but I think N.Iowa has been a tough customer in these historically ..
- Boise gets North Dakota in a pretty unfortunate spot .. @WASH, UCF, ND, @SDSU, @MEMP .. like wayyy bigger fish to fry and ND was pretty dangerous catching NEB in a bad spot LY .., think they still have Tommy "The Rooster" Schuster at QB he's a gamer ..
- Nevada / Idaho .. Fightin Potatoes played Wash State very tough LY and Hero has em #5 pre ssn .. could def sink any chance for Nevada's to cover their RSW ..
- Albany to Honolulu would be 10.5 hours if a non stop flight existed .. maybe ~30+ hours of round trip total travel time in a weekend?... woof ..
- Utah/Weber surrounded by more important games .. Utes go UF, @BAY, Weber, UCLA, @BEAVS .. another bigger fish to fry sitch ..
- Samford still not terrible?... def catch Auburn in a spot sammiched between @Cal, @A&M .. Little Bama School has got that one circled in blood red ..
- Cock sammich w FCS #6 Furman wedged between the MASSIVE (N)UNC and @UGA .. Little SCAR team is showing up ..
- IDK if SELA is any good this year they def get SO.Bama in a spot between @Tulane and @OK.State..
- Same for Gard Webb idk if they'll be as good but they were realllly close to upending Coastal and Liberty LY .. App State opening weekend surprise w huuuuuge UNC game on deck ..
-

week 2

New Hampshire at Central Michigan. CM inMichigan St - Notre Dame sandwich (and a revenge game vs SBama after that). UNH returns 17 starters which I believe includes their QB and team captain/star RB. UNH was a surprise playoff team last season after winning a share of their league title. Even though they struggled to crack 40 vs lowly Bucknell last year, Central Michigan likely should be a better team this year, but UNH could also be a better team

Southern Illinois at Northern Illinois. SIU beat Northwestern last year (not that big of a deal last year) and they were 5-2 before they lost their final 4 to make their first losing season since 2018. They also were a back-to-back playoff team in 2020 and 2021 before last season. In 2021 they only lost to Kansas St by 8 and upset South Dakota State who at the time was ranked #2. I'm not familiar with their roster this year and who is back or not, but their staff has a history of playing good teams close and pulling upsets. Northern Illinois should also be a better team than they fielded last season, although they find them selves in a sandwich spot as well with SIU coming in between BC and Nebraska.

Fordham at Buffalo. Fordham was 9-3 last year with a record setting offense and nearly beat Ohio University and lost in OT to Holy Cross (who also had a very good season). Same head coach, new coordinators promoted from within. Unfortunately they are down 8 starters on O including their outstanding QB. Buffalo has become just kind of an average-ish MAC team these days. They lost to Holy Cross on a hailmary last year.

UC Davis at Oregon State would be pretty shocking given the trajectory the Beavers are on. Davis has pulled some upsets and played some others tough. Last year they got off to a rough start in what was supposed to be a strong season for them. I don't know what their personnel looks like going into this year however and Oregon St appears to continue getting stronger. It's still Dan Hawkins at the top of the staff for Davis so you never know either way with him.

Albany also goes to Marshall the week before Honolulu. Have to assume they charter those flights though so should be nonstop

Teams like Sac St and UIW hired their OCs to replace the HCs that left, I highly doubt you'll see much difference in offenses like those where they should get their pick of QBs from the portal with the way they play offense. Those system guys should always thrive there until they change the formula...which they should never do.

Holy Cross will be played and I'll be eyeing Weber when they play Utah. Most of the FCS spreads I play will also have a small piece of the MLs

Clint Killough just lacks the resume.

Eric Morris:

2010: Houston, Quality Control
2011: Houston, Graduate Assistant
2012: Washington State, Inside Wide Receivers
2013: Texas Tech, Co-OC/Inside Wide Receivers
2014: Texas Tech, Offensive Coordinator/Wide Receivers
2015-17: Texas Tech, Offensive Coordinator/Inside Wide Receivers
2018-21: Incarnate Word, Head Coach
2022-current: Washington State Offensive Coordinator

GJ Kinne

2017: SMU, offensive assistant (called plays in bowl game)
2018: Arkansas, offensive analyst
2019: Philadelphia Eagles offensive assistant (special projects)
2020: Hawaii, offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach
2021: UCF, co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach
2022: UIW Head Coach
2023: Texas STate Head Coach

Clint Killough

2017: Bowling Green, Graduate Assistant
2018-19: UIW, quality control
2020-21: UIW, inside receivers and recruiting coordinator
2022: UIW, associate head coach/wide receivers coach
2023: UIW Head Coach

Killough got promoted from within, and that is fine and maybe he was the best candidate for them and maybe he'll be a fine head coach and oversee a good offense, but at the same time it also seems like this isn't necessarily the record of success they have used before in naming their previous two head coaches - Killough has never been an OC before.

dropping down to week 6, William & Mary beating Virginia would be no shocker. Not sure where Virginia is going to find improved offense this year. Their D might be good enough to keep them in some games. W&M is pretty loaded and off a very strong season last year. It is a somewhat frequent series and UVA has won the last 5, 3 being bonafide blowouts and only one of those 5 was a one score game. W&M last win in the series was 2009. These teams are in different places now with W&M again appearing capable of a FCS playoff run and UVA trying to avoid the ACC basement. Both teams have a bye after this game. One caveat though, W&M does play Elon the week before and Elon came from 18 down back to win last year so no doubt that game will have some meaning for the Tribe. Can't see them coming off that one flat however being that UVA has typically woodshedded them and this is a rare chance to get the Hoos.

That is a good look there. Sac State still looks pretty good if they can get a good replacement at QB (really they are replacing both of their QBs from last year). There are a handful of new position coaches for Sac State, but a lot of their staff stayed (DC elevated to HC, QB coach elevated to OC, same OL coach, same DL coach).

About the only FCS analytics I've seen - provides unique FCS data - PR / matchup tool / SOS for O & D / starting FP / predicted spread, etc. He's only done it for a year or so (FCS), so not perfect, but very useful, and superior to anything else publicly available and FREE. A Bridge1 recommendation seems like :

great to see you over here ole friend...

@KJ woahhhhh .. I didn't check Albany's schedule man o man that is straight up RUGGGGED .. I wouldn't assume too much on CFB travel outside the major conferences .. G5 travel can get uncomfortable, plenty of long bus rides in the FCS .. I have no idea what the plan is but suspect it won't be direct .. the other questions are how thin is that travel roster gunna be .. when are they leaving vs playing, .. how discombobulated will they be .. maybe doesn't matter this is obvi a must win for Hawaii and maybe first sure shot for Timmy to show off a little at home... think they will ..

I just don't think you can travel a full football team commercially like a basketball team can, just too many players and coaches. I guess maybe they have to stop and fuel up.

Sup dude!!!! .. yeah think if cappin FCS or even just FBS/FCS sharp college football's analytics are interesting but very true LY was year 1 .. sounds like Phil is putting an FCS mag out but no idea when .. HERO sports / Sam Herder is the ball with FCS im sure he'll have some articles or podcasts on potential FBS upsets ..

I suddenly got curious about this and ran across this site of college football charter aviation fanatics lol .. can't make it up .. looks like Vandy and WKY both went non stops to Hawaii LY although Albany is considerably longer and less budgeted so guess we'll see .. vandy was there about a week before practicing and soaking it up .. def see a few notes in there when travel goes awry .. very much worth a bookmark ..

Fascinating site, thanks for posting it

Pretty sure Hawaii pays for the visitors for these kinds of things or at least helps to subsidize it

Seein WKY had to high tail it outta town after their game LY .. midnight exit got home like 2:30 .. plus a bus ride .. think for sure Albany is on an all expenses paid hawaiian vacation .. at least for one day lol ...

Took a look at St Francis (PA). Ran undefeated through the weak Northeast Conference then lost big in the first round of the FCS.

They travel to Western Michigan week 1. WM normally puts up big numbers vs the FCS opponents, but I thought with this particular WM team vs a St Francis who nearly won at Akron last year after the kind of season the Red Flashes had in 2022 that maybe this would be an FCS-FBS upset candidate.

Unfortunately St Francis was decimated in the transfer portal. They placed 10 players 1st Tm All NEC and 3 more 2nd Tm. Only 3 of the 13 return. 4 of them landed FBS spots with a DL that signed at Maryland. And it appears they only landed one incoming transfer, a non-remarkable DB from Lehigh. It's a shame as all but one of their key players they lost were young and it looked like they could've had a stronger team this year and next.

St Francis would have to be catching 30 or so for me to want to take a look. I assume WMU will be -17 or so.

Looking for any angles or trends through the last two years.

2021 and 2022 seasons FBS vs FCS = 120-108-5 ATS
(2021 57-55-4 ATS)
(2022 63-53-1 ATS)

I thought there could be a difference between coaches in their first season compared to returning coaches, with the new staff being more vulnerable to a poor game, which ATS over the last two years it was not the records I thought it would be.

2021 and 2022 seasons FBS vs FCS new head coaches = 24-15-1 ATS
2021 and 2022 seasons FBS vs FCS existing head coaches = 96-93-4 ATS

In terms of straight up, there is a slightly better chance that a new coaching staff will be upset by an FCS team than an experienced coach staff.

2021 and 2022 seasons returning coaching staffs lost a total of 15 games out of 193 games (7.77%)
2021 and 2022 seasons new coaching staffs lost a total of 5 games out of 40 (12.5%)

I wondered how the FBS teams who lose to an FCS team respond the following week, and it is not good. Those teams are only 3-17 SU and 8-12 ATS (6 of those 8 covers happened on the road).

Also there have been 3 FBS teams lined as dogs the past two years each. Over that period the FBS dog team has won 4 out of the 6 straight up.

-Note I did not include the spring 2021 New Mexico State - Tarleton State result in any of the records.

Which book is best for earliest lines on FCS vs FBS ? BM? BOL? Other?

I remember jumping on a few here and there last year and the lines would move between 2-10 points at times, but don't remember which book provided the best opportunity each week, so open to suggestions...

I only bet online one week last year of college football and I only used books that released lines on Saturday morning. Being prepared I was able to get a lot of good lines compared to close on Bet Rivers, but they didn't release until maybe an hour before the first game kicked off and they move quick. DK was the other one, but their lines were worse from the start. I suspect that offshores will be better.

Yeah it was fun when I was around before kickoffs as much value was to be had, but these days I’m not around as much on Saturday mornings and we don’t get DK or FD here in NC yet, although the bill to “legalize” betting was recently signed and we will finally have more options both online and Brick and mortar, starting in Q1 2024.

Would be good to know FCS ATS records or how teams do as a dog and how they do as a favorite if anyone has that information readily available?
only back to 2009 (you get a lot of unlined the farther you go back.) Not sure if you meant just FCS or FCS vs. FBS. It's a rudimentary search. A lot of other posters have better SDQL skills.

I'm not familiar with any of those things. Maybe they hold the answer. But what I was wondering is something like, say Stetson, how does Stetson perform as a dog, as a favorite? Or in-season tracking of lines and results. I can find FBS ATS logs for any team, newsletters and online websites, but if I want to see how a team like Stetson has been doing ATS updatd week to week, where can I find that? Does Killer Sports keep track of info like that? I don't know how to use it though.

You click the link. Fcs vs fbs for example)
You know what ats/su/total are.
On tge far right(in blue) are the teams
You can click each and get details for that team specific to tge date range(2009-present.
It will take a small bit of effort to find the team you’re looking for but you can do that.

massey is a good tool to use, like phil steele, sag, or other ratings. a starting point, or an idea. years ago some of the rogue books used to blindly put up these massey numbers with low limits and myself and some of the educated constituents over on "blankets" used to pound those lines...and then our ole pal JIMMYDAFREAK would post about the SEC and sunbelt...miss those days.

Thanks for taking the time to post this info, great stuff!

Here are the ones I jotted down a few weeks back, but of course, any actual plays would be dependent on whether or not I can actually get lines, but never hurts to be proactive. I think some of these may open within range, but may see some jump 5+ points after open like they did at times last year, so gonna have to be ready on gameday to pounce.

Okie State if laying less than 35
Wofford if getting 35.5 or more
SEMO if getting 35.5 or more
Oregon if laying less than 40
Ariz State if laying less than 35
Memphis if laying less than 42
FAU if laying less than 28
Charlotte if laying less than 31
UNI if getting more than 24.5
Cuse if laying less than 35
Mizzou if laying less than 28

Yeah Memphis -42 or less has to be a look. They are great in this spot pouring it on and Bethune is really bad. Should be a solid play IF we can get a line we like.

Yeah the thing is how many of these will actually have lines and for the one that do, they will probably come out an hour before kickoff, so I gotta make sure I am camped out in front of the laptop as the openers probably won't be out there for more than a minute in some cases. My plan this year is to fund 3 books sometime early August, which gives me some leeway in case I run into issues with funding for whatever reason. I am going with BOL, BM and Heritage this year, so hope that combination is a winning one this year. Best of luck man, and thanks for the discussion!

every one of these games will have lines. and yes, they will be posted "day of". bookmaker is good about getting them out the day of the game in the early morning (after 9am Central), you just have to prepare before hand and pounce on the good numbers...thursday, friday in week 1 is no different. they will be lined under "extra games" within the college football section of your menu.

all my offshore books and local casino options all have lines for these, and they can be WEAK AF if you know what you are looking for...

week 1 these FCS big dogs of +32.5 or more do not compete well. Since 2011 ( I sorted out some previous years because there was a 50% record )
Favorites laying <-32.5 or more :

73-54 ATS and 49-29 ATS if the favorite in this game will be a favorite in their next contest as well. The back to back favorites usually means a premium favorite and the results show it.

It's tough to tell imo about these mammoth spreads because the game likely plays a lot differently with the moving clock. Less plays means less likely to get that final garbage time score you need to cover. Curious how it plays out and no better time than week 1 to get these kinds of spreads to see
