Can't find odds on the Truck race tonight, as Olympic isn't offering them..so that sucks..

500 full of newcomers, past victors and cheats

Rookie David Gilliland, a bright spot in an otherwise bleak beginning to the 2007 season, will lead the grid to green Sunday some two hours after FOX comes on the air at 1 p.m. ET for pre-race pomp and circumstance

Gilliland spotlights an all-Robert Yates Racing front row, with freshly unretired Ricky Rudd starting on the outside.

A pair of former Cup champions looking for redemption in '07 start on Row 2. Tony Stewart, who has won everything but the Florida state lottery in the year's early going, is third alongside Kurt Busch, who begins his second season in the No. 2 Dodge. Neither has ever won the Daytona 500.

Jeff Gordon has, but a fourth victory might be hard to come by after his car failed inspection following his win Thursday in the second Gatorade Duel. Gordon will start next-to-last in the 43-car field.

Seems Gordon picked the wrong day to get caught. Another former 500 winner, Michael Waltrip, whose team committed the most serious of infractions among the six offenders, raced his way into the field in the first twin qualifier -- in the backup car of Michael Waltrip Racing driver David Reutimann.

Despite having his qualifying time disallowed, Matt Kenseth will start 10th.
One driver void of car ill-tampering has been Dale Earnhardt Jr., a former winner who will start fifth.

"I couldn't be happier with my crew," Earnhardt said. "I really like all of the guys around me and we're all really focused on the racecar and motivated to go out and win another of these [Daytona 500s].

It's a race we all look forward to for months and months, and I'll be glad to get in the racecar and let it all hang out. We won the 500 in 2004, and it really set the tone and the attitude for the rest of the season."

Jimmie Johnson overcame a cheating scandal at last year's Daytona 500 to win the race, then cooly proceded to win the Cup championship.

"Our chances are good but this year's 500 is a lot different than last year's," said Johnson, who will start 21st. "The car that I would really like to have is sitting over in Daytona USA right now.

"We have been working on trying to get our car to handle but we lost too much straight-away speed in the process. So we have to find a happy medium."

Newcomer Toyota will have four cars in the Daytona 500, three of which belong to Michael Waltrip Racing. The other is the Bill Davis Racing No. 22 Camry, with driver Dave Blaney putting up the manufacturer's most consistent times in preseason tests.

"Our Toyota Camrys were fast, and we feel very confident in what we'll be able to do not only in Daytona, but for the entire season," Blaney said. "We're excited about this year, and we think we have the chance to really improve the performance of this race team right from the start of the year."

Four drivers will be making their first Daytona 500 start: Gilliland, Reutimann, Juan Montoya and David Ragan, who replaces Mark Martin after 19 years in the No. 6 Ford.

"I think we are ready for Daytona. I have mentally and physically prepared myself for this race," said Ragan, who will start 35th. "This is one of the biggest races of the season if not the biggest and I want to finish every lap and improve every lap.

"I know I have the resources to get the job done so I am going to take advantage of that and do the very best I can."

Well boys...big card here and I'm tempted to go nuts, but not extended the whole roll this early...I didn't flat bet last year, and it got me in trouble in spots, so I'm flat betting all year, no exceptions..

First off, the 20 is the major fave to win the race, and the odds are indicitive of that...that being said, I don't see any way u can't bet the 20 in any scenario here...there's absolutely NO VALUE in that...at almost 2-1, that's just unheard of in NASCAR, let alone at a plate race...there are so many variables that came into a plate race, besides having the best car/driver...it's just insane to bet the 20 at these odds...but I'm rootin for SMOKE and I hope he cashes everyone of those odds..

As for the others, I think the bowtie's have some competition today...in the 150's, I was extremely impressed w/ the 38...the hung in there all day, w/ basically no help from other drivers, and certainly none from his manufacturer...Chevy's took 7 of the top 8 spots in the first duel, and Gilliland was the sole non Chevy in that group...he passed cars w/ NO help and his car was a pusher, and not getting pushed too much himself...he has a TON of motor and Ole Bertha was handling well too...kid's got a good piece today..

Others:

17: was dropped to the back and came right up through the field takin the 9 w/ him...they've been quick and the car is handling great...expect windy conditions today and that's always a positive for the handling cars, where it's always important at Daytona...the 17 was the best three cars (8, 5) in that second duel...He's my second choice today..

2: teamed w/ his brother and was stout as well...Kurt is a great drafter and you never hear anyone talk about him when they talk about plate faves, prolly cause he hasn't won one...but he's a top 5 machine at plate tracks..

5: has been at the front of every race he's ran down here and no reason to think he won't be again...he's the best Hendrick car down there this week IMO...

31: Burton was so impressive in the first duel...he was junk in qualifying and started in the back...he literally went from 27th to 3rd in two laps...doing alot of it up the middle w/ no help..his car sucked up as good as anyone in the field and you could tell it really handles well...this is a guy that can work the draft and a good handling car is car to work w/...sleeper today..


As for cars to fade, I think I'd stear clear of the 48...he's getting good value in these matchups for the most part, but he's showed no speed...mainly because his car is pushing, and the wind won't help that..when you push in the corner at Daytona, it kills your straightaway speed and then in turn makes it impossible to pass..I don't think he's a factor today...another car I don't want anything to do w/ is the 29...he won the busch race yesterday, but it's been a disaster this week in the Cup car...he hasn't been fast and had mechanical issues over and over...don't think he's the best RCR car here (31 is IMO)...

Good luck today, like most of your picks, still deciding who to take today. Smoke was +450 - + 550 last week, now he is like you said about 2 -1 maybe 2 1/2 - 1. Not sure on the Burton over Mears pick, but like the rest. Nice writeup, by the way.:cheers:
 
Great insight, JUMP. Will tail on you 3 of the 4 matchups, passing on Gordon vs. Kurt . Also think you are dead on about JJ and Harvick, if they win I will be shocked. Put some on Jr., Kyle, Kenseth and Gordon to win it. GL

Crazy ass ending and two of my guys spin coming out of four running 2nd and 4th, but still cash thank god..
