CFL 2020 Draft

Well there's not a lot going on these days and since the CFL season may become the latest co-victim, and the league itself is teetering on the edge of existence, I am going to enjoy this like its a goddamned Grey Cup.

Its been tough trying to keep on top of roster news with the current situation but I'm going to sit back and enjoy the draft like I do every year and keep my fingers crossed that we may see some 3 down football this year.

The obligatory Simpsons clip...

Of particular interest this year is Ohio QB Nathan Rourke. He has a skill set that is well suited to 3-down ball but there is a sense that he may find a place on an NFL roster at some point so any team that drafts him may have to wait a bit. Its very likely he could go in the 2nd round and could possibly even be the highest QB ever picked.

I'm interested to see what Hamilton does. They have an embarrassment of riches with 2 first round picks thanks to the Manziel trade with Montreal. Biggest needs are a speedy NAT receiver and some depth on the DL. I would love to see them take Virginia receiver Dejon Brissett who would fit in very nicely with his size and speed.

eta...the cats also need a kicker after losing Hajrallahu to the LA Rams and there just so happens to be one of the best K/P prospects for several years in this draft in Marc Ligghio out of Western. Could the cats really spend the 9th pick on a kicker?

And sorry...this is decidely a low budget affair. Commissioner Ambrosie will not be going full moose-knuckle by the end of the night.

Most mock drafts have East Carolina's Jordan Williams going first overall to Calgary although don't rule out the possibility of someone trading up. Williams is the perfect CFL draft pick...good enough to be a star in this league but lacking the size to be a realistic NFL prospect so low risk.

Also of interest to me is UBC DB Stavros Katsantonis. He's undersized but has skills and he is flying below the radar after having his college career sidelined by a positive drug test.

A number of potential 1st rounders have already been snapped up by the NFL as UDFAs including Alberta OT Carter O'Donnel (Colts), Brown DL Michael Hoecht (Rams) and Montreal DB Marc-Antoine Dequoy (Packers).

Just read SFU receiver Rysen John signed with the NY Giants. Another potential first rounder drops off the board.

We've got some props! Sorry for the shitty formatting...I'm a capper, not an IT specialist.

Degenerate gambler specials for tonight...

0.025* Isaac Adeyemi-Berglund 1st Overall Pick +250

Some rumors swirling around today that the Stamps either trade the first pick or select Mr. Alphabet here out of SE Louisiana. THinking about it, he fits a definite need they have for NAT depth on the DL.

Eyeing a few others including what round Rourke goes. I'm torn as to whether he goes in the second or third but I don't see it any later than that.

Also find this one intriguing. Territorial picks have been gaining popularity over the past few years and its always been an asset in Quebec. Wouldn't surprise me if the ALs picked him unless another team does so first.

Also gonna take a shot with this...

0.025* Neville Gallimore picked in round 2 +325

Gallimore could be a year 1 starter on any teams DL and is being compared to Ted Laurent. But it always hard to determine how far a guys stock has fallen when he goes to the NFL. I doubt a team wastes a first round selection on a risky gamble that he doesn't make it down south. Nevertheless, Gallimore is a highly touted prospect that could get taken by any number of teams in the second round. Being that his hometown is Ottawa, I see the Redblacks taking a chance on him, if not with the 10th pick, then certainly with their territorial pick at the end of the second round. Ottawa's designated territory is relatively small and by pick 19 there may not be a whole lot of quality players left that qualify, making Gallimore worth the risk for them.

Reminds me of trying to pick the NIT winner in December. Who's too shitty to make the nfl, but still good enough to be effective

Calgary takes Adeyemi-Bergland with #3. Smart of them to trade down and still get their man.

Wow Cats take OL Coulter Woodmansey. Didn’t expect them to go OL and he wasn’t expected to go before the 2nd round. Very odd pick

Ottawa takes S Adam Auclair. Not a surprise although I thought Edmonton would take him at #4.

I wasn’t even aware the CFL had a draft, seriously. Lol. What is the player pool they draft from? Is it undrafted college kids or do players sign up for it so cfl knows they want to play in their league?

Yup. Not to mention trying to figure out who actually cares and wants to be there.

That my question and why I asked where they get the player pool for this draft? I would think they would get torched with early draft picks if nfl offered a free agent contract.

Players have to declare for the draft. It’s for Nationals only so to qualify you have to be a Canadian Citizen.

Most of the players are either NCAA or USports (Canadian college athletic system).

Very different than the NFL draft. Since it’s national players only, teams do t draft QBs in round 1. Offensive linemen typically dominate early.

There are players that declare for both. Chase Claypool for example is available in this draft but he won’t go until late if at all because he’s an NFL pick and won’t likely come north.

right on, interesting. So that just applies to the draft correct? They can still sign other guys who not Canadian citizens?

Yes. CFL rosters have to have minimum 21 nationals on the 52 man roster and at any given time 7 nationals on the starting roster.

It’s provides several handicapping angles that aren’t well understood by most bettors.

Very happy with the cats 2nd first round pick DL Mason Bennett our of North Dakota. He will give them depth they lost when Connor McGough left

So 4 OL, 2 DL, and 1ea WR, DB & LB in the first round. Pretty typical.

I have one bet left that Gallimore goes in the 2nd round.

Packers prospect Marc-Antoine Dequoy goes to the Alouettes. I think he ends up in the CFL eventually. He’s too raw for an NFL team to develop.

Nathan Rourke goes to BC at #15. Tied for the highest drafted QB ever with Jesse Palmer.

I knew I should’ve taken that bet.

Well Ottawa passed on Gallimore so I’m likely 0-3 tonight.

Combine that with 0-1 in the nfl draft and I won’t be betting a draft again until there’s another pandemic.

Well that’s the first 2 rounds done. I’ll sign off at this point.

Keeping my fingers crossed that we see some cfl ball this year and even more so that the league survives because that’s anything but sure right now.

LOL Neville Gallimore goes in the 8th round, third to last. Just missed that one by a little.

Mr. Irrelevent for 2020 is DB Bleska Kambamba out of the University of Western Ontario.

Well that's it.

Please please please let there be football this year. I'll wear a mask if I have to.

these lower less cash rich leagues have to play or they in serious trouble.

Did you guys make any money on the cfl draft? I risked bout 6 bills on the nfl (pretty much what I had left in bitcoin I hadnt cashed) hoped to double but also feared i was gonna end it with like 200 left, lol. Ended up winning little over 200 total which not terrible, not great since 140 of the winnings was Hurts in 2nd round!

would it be harsh to suggest the cfl has many mr irrelevant picks before the last guy? Lol

I went 0-3 but just $50 bets for fun. so no big deal. I honestly didn't spend a whole lot of time capping it. Its too unpredictable.

Maybe not but I'll say this...I make about double the CFL minimum salary but if any team called me up and offered me a roster spot for the minimum I'd take it. Anyone who can get paid to play a kids game is doing ok in my book.

And yeah you are right. CFL teams derive about 60% of their revenue from ticket sales and gameday sales so they can't play games without fans and survive. I am clinging to the faint hope of playing a half season starting labor day but thats a long shot too I think. The future is not looking bright.

oh absolutely! Well not sure if I would take the offer now, not sure my aging out of shape body could hold up presently?

I’ve gotten slammed with side work starting last week, I’ve taken down couple trees, pulled some bushes, and busted out a concrete patio by hand (worked all thru the weekend) and I was so happy it started raining yesterday afternoon and was still drizzling this morning so I had excuse to take a day off! I slept in till 11!! Wore the fuck out!! Lol.

back in my 30s when I was still a workout warrior I would have got on a plane to play in the CFL in a heartbeat so certainly not taking anything away from them!
