2023 Transfers

It would have to be a clear upgrade for us to take a QB in the portal. We'll see who enters the portal in the coming days, but there's probably only 8-10 guys out there that are a clear upgrade at this point. I don't expect us to take a QB though. The roster is championship caliber though, and 9-3 would be an abject failure.
Alabama snagged a QB as mentioned in my April 24 post. Today is May 2. At the time of my April 24 post they wanted the QB from the state of North Carolina, that didn't happen, but they did pick up a QB because what they currently have doesn't make the grade. I stand by my comment that this AL team is 9-3 or 10-2.

If I remember correctly, Colorado leads all CFB in players using the portal to leave.

Breaks over back to Derby stuff.

If this team goes 9-3, then I'll concede that the downward slide is in full effect. I get the questions at QB, but there is a lot to like elsewhere on the team. My guess is that Ty Simpson still becomes the starter, but I don't discount that a healthy Buchner could win the job. It does seem that the writing is on the wall for Milroe, but he didn't enter the portal yet, so that's a positive sign. It seems clear that the coaches feel that the current guys aren't progressing as they had hoped. Competition should make the eventual starter better, I guess we'll just have to see how good that starter actually ends up being.

Please do not take my comments to mean Alabama is not a very good team, they are. Right now, Saban isn't happy with how the QB position is progressing and felt he needed to try and upgrade the position. Is this guy the solution? I don't know but it wouldn't surprise me to see him get a fair opportunity to try and win the job in the locker room and field. I truly get a person's passion for their school and realize it's not always easy to see things another way. It's well established, I live in Florida but this doesn't mean I should put every in state team a top each their conference. In another thread or post, I mentioned FSU not being ready for National Championship because they don't have the depth needed (yet). That doesn't mean I won't be rooting and cheering for them, I will, but I realize they aren't ready this season. I am extra critical of all the in state teams because I do not want to be called and/or considered a homer. The season will be here soon so we can talk about the games and that's always fun.

I think the folks around here can vouch that i'm not some public message board homer. While it's true that my fandom does blind me somewhat, I try very hard to be impartial on this board. In-game threads after a full day of having fun can't be held against me lol.

Mycah Pittman to Utah. He's been banged up but if he's healthy this is a good get for Utah. They need "a guy" at WR.

AU WR Landen King to Utah. Auburn insisted on him as a WR but Utah sees him as Dalton Kincaid/Brandt Kuithe type TE. I think this will be a great move for both.

Alabama added DBs Trey Amos and Jaylen Key this week. Guess Nick had enough after watching Jalin Hyatt run past everyone not named Kool-Aid last year half a dozen times. Secondary shaping up to be a real strength of the team this season, especially considering the guys we'll have chasing the QB

Saban is straight up hoarding at this point lol .. both sounded like prized grabs but isin't there like a wall of 5 star studs lined up to be #3 on the depth chart there? idk I think Amos has a coupe years unsure w Key might be his last hurrah if he doesn't have a few extra covid years saved up ..

I believe this puts us at 87 or 88, so 2-3 guys might need to find new homes by August. Though I think a specialist or two may not be on scholarship
Michigan will be carrying 95-100 this year it looks like.

NIL at work.

This just kinda came up the past few months.

No play for pay here but they are using the situation to their advantage.

There's no doubt that NIL opens up possibilities for roster management. Saban has been a master at it for years, I have no doubt we'll be able to have close to 100 possible contributors on the roster at all times

I should have worded it better.

I'd say these top 10 teams will all be able to do that now..

Casey Thompson to FAU. Reunites with Tom Herman who recruited him to Texas in the first place. I expect he'll have a big year

Yeah I know what you meant. From the beginning there's been a few folks who have said that with NIL and portal, that the rich will get richer, and I think we're seeing that. But I think it also helps the "middle class" too. It's why you see a TCU or a Cincinnati make the CFP. I think it's a net positive, though I think we'll see fewer super teams like we had on the reg during the 2000-2020 seasons

Add in the portal too...

So many good 4th and 5th year guys stepping into P5 teams...

This kid we got from Coastal, Josiah Stewart, is going to have a 6+ sack season and likely have a better draft position now (for example).

There's a lot of win-win situations. Strictly from an Alabama perspective, we've had 4 out of 7 or 8 portal guys go in the first 3 rounds of the NFL draft so far. We'll see moving forward if that trend continues. I think there is some bad as far as diminished opportunities for graduating high school kids, as well as guys who are too impatient at some schools, but it will work itself out. We've taken 5 portal guys this year, and the one that the fanbase is least excited about was also the highest rated recruit (Tyler Buchner)

Good stuff.

ND fans told us Tyler was far superior to JJ as they got recruited (JJ turned ND down) so I think you'll be happy ;).

I'm not sure what to expect honestly. What I think is that all 5 guys that have transferred in will make their individual position groups more competitive, so I don't see how it's a bad thing. If the Alabama QB ends up being better than average, I think we'll be in the discussion all the way to the end

Probably better for another thread but the schedule sets up nice ....

Sure Texas coming in, but you all should win on home turf.

Looks like most tough sec opponents at home sans Jimbo.

Maybe I'll gather up some gusto and start an SEC preseason/prediction thread. More interested in my golf game at this point though

You should.

I'm pretty juiced about football right now maybe I'll do a Big thread.

I understand all that about the golf game though. I just need my back to stop hurting around hole 14 and then really start getting the rounds in.

Not to totally derail, but look at really stretching your hamstrings, hips and/or shoulders. Back pain usually comes from the back picking up the slack from another area being deficient. For me, it was all in the hips...

I noticed that last fall, with regards to the hips.

I didn't stretch tuat great last weekend before a round and it showed.

I'll work on the hammys a bit more. That honestly makes sense.

I keep some stretch bands in both vehicles so I can do it in the parking lot as well.

Utah added USC S Bam Allen. He's had some injury issues but will add some quality depth to the secondary.

You meant Tulane instead of Cincinnati

He's a huge get but don't sleep on Daniel Richardson .. Tom Herman / Casey T reunite is a better story but DR was one of FAU OC Carlie Frye's first recruits at CMU in '19 .. CMU zero FBS wins in '18 .. Mcelwain along w Frye turned the Chips around big time nearly eeking out a MAC championship his first year.. DR wasn't the QB yet but the QB play was a huge part of the turnaround and I bet Frye has a strong hand in picking his QB's .. DR had some ups and downs but I thought he was pretty good overall they had a string of bad injuries the last few years and DR got injured late last year .. and does sound like he RIPPED FAU's 100% ret pro D in the spring game, he's sure fire QB1 after spring ball .. Thompson could obvi take that spot in the Fall but Im not at all convinced he's a sure thing I mean Sims beats him out, Card beats him out and its pretty late in the game post spring here ..

Really surprised Thompson didn't go to Mich State there's an open seat in the B10 WTH MAN!!! .. I can't imagine they didn't try to get him in there, I hear their collective is pretty flush and that situation is beyond code red at this point .. so odd Thorne a 3 year starter leaves after spring and I haven't heard about them pursuing anyone to come in .. have to start wondering .. Is Noah Kim just like this total secret nuclear weapon QB and won the competition and they let Thorne resign gracefully so he'd get decent offers etc lol .. idk that doesn't sound as crazy to me as we're just wingin it at QB this year ... The Kim Nuke Theory is way more fun hope its true!

Utes wheelin em in lately .. idk how you'd judge their portal record overall but theres at least a few guys they found that were pure portal platinum status rare earth super gems lol .. you got any read on the recent influx.. these lookin like sniper shots or Utes really just needing bodies at spots and filling the ranks? ..

Caesars with a 6-1 for the conf still .. maybe rest of the PAC finally has em outgunned but if they're gunna give us those odds I can get on board pretty easy .. maybe doesn't get there but the thing we can count on is there's nothing hyped up or fake about DA UUUUTES ..

I think sniper shots. I think this years team will be better defensively than last year and Jaquinden Jackson is going to be a beast at RB. Can Rising stay healthy though? It Looks like Brandon Rose will be the #2 QB this year and he's a huge upgrade over Barnes.

Utah is also looking to add one potentially huge get at WR but I won't mention the name yet. There are a few things holding up an official announcement but it is expected that he'll be a Ute.

Edit: I've seen his name connected to Utah just by a Google search so I'll post it. Trejan Bridges.

Oh cmon don't do that to me lol.. no idea who so hope I don't jinx it but .. CMON ZAKHARI!!! .. yeah just hit Utes 6-1 an hour ago at Caesars they had the best odds out there and idk why in the world they moved squarely behind 3 others I'm sure there's alot of well this team/that looks good etc .. maybe not THAT big a value but think the right odds are like 3 to 4 ..

Had fun with a few PAC long shots .. UA 100-1 lol okay maybe lost already but the O looks built to pull some shockers.... they play all the top teams but 4/5 are at home .. at 100-1 I can have a little fun ..

Gotta say I don't see UCLA as a sure thing way back of the pack 16-1 long shot .. the guys lost are the story but their roster doesn't seem in bad shape and idk never thought much of DTR I could see a new era being good there and couple QB's to choose from .. Main thing is Kelly needed to finally hire a real DC .. whiffed on all the guys he used to work with but moving to the B10 this was a must win spot .. can't go to the B1G a stinky PAC team.. can't go being USC's little brother .. my limited read is they went out and got a well recommended NFL DB's coach .. its not sure thing but think sure thing better than Kelly's hires .. also nothing to base them being bad on yet .. UCLA like only team that still has a roster still from '22 ... no spring game ... could just be hiding a dud I suppose but I dont think its such a long shot that they're competing with the top teams .. not a bad schedule to bag wins either albeit 3 tough roadies .. we'll see ..

I don't see UCLA either. The south should come down to Utah/USC. The north will likely be an Oregon/UW shootout. None of that matters any longer though with them talking the best two for the ccg.

Dante Moore will be better than DTR.

I was a DTR guy as well.

I'd expect that Dante starts right away. That was a big thing with his recruitment and why he flipped from Oregon when Nix decided to come back.

Ugh I didn't even know that. How stupid...that conference is a sieve, figured the new commish would improve it when he came in but that is taking a couple massive steps back.

Beat reporters say Garbers clearly won the spring and Moore looks good but isin't quite there.. Schlee further back .. kelly is keepin things close to the vest won't know much till week 1 on QB's or much else .. Obvi gotta find a way to keep Moore involved can't lose him ... im optimistic given the QB competition we can at least count on Garbers being solid and he knows Chip's offense by now .. I don't think Moore is QB1 opening day unless he really earns it so if he's first one trottin out there its maybe a real good sign they're lock'd n loaded w him ..

Also sounded like TJ Hardin is looking like a legit RB1, Carson Steele looked good .. lost Bobo but lotta WR's back and the xfer from Cal is a good replacement .. QB questions aside whole roster looks in pretty good shape I don't see a dud unit on there, good depth, experience and talent ratings returning / tranferring in .. that doesn't mean it all clicks together obvi .. the new DC gotta perform an exorcism lol .. but if they can get reasonably coordinated on D and got the right QB picked out then think real decent shot they'll just have a good win total and might slip into the champ game .. lucky draw to avoid Oreg and Wash .. all the other top teams play basically a round robin and its no divisions .. gotta have the wins ..

I hate it too but I don't think it's all on George K. He has some dumb ass presidents to deal with in this conference. They are the dumbest smart people of all time.

I guess this season will see USC and UCLA getting virtually no favors from Pac 12 refs in theory. But conference refs out West rarely make any sense anyway. Top two teams will likely be Oregon and USC I guess but would it be a shock if they found a way to make Oregon/UW the conference ship game if possible?

Big 12 is already trying to gobble up the Utes and Colorado. Conference is in such disarray.
