Kobe Bryant hasn't given up on the Lakers' season, but he knows that injuries are piling up and time is wasting, writes Jackie MacMullan. Story

More MacMullan: Kobe talks Celtics

Despite winning the three games Howard has missed, the Lakers (23-26) are 10th in the Western Conference playoff race. They also will be without star forward Pau Gasol, who has a tear in the plantar fascia of his right foot, an MRI revealed Wednesday. The Lakers fear Gasol could be sidelined four to six weeks, a source told ESPNLosAngeles.com."We don't have time for (Howard's shoulder) to heal," Bryant said Wednesday in an exclusive interview with ESPNBoston.com's Jackie MacMullan. "We need some urgency."The interview with MacMullan came one day after Bryant publicly challenged Howard, stating that playing through an injury is "something that you have to balance out and manage."Bryant also asserted that Howard is preoccupied with how he is perceived by fans and media."Dwight worries too much about what people think," Bryant told MacMullan. "I told him, 'You can't worry about that. It's holding you back.' He says, 'OK, OK, OK,' but it's always hovering around him.

"He just wants people to like him. He doesn't want to let anyone down, and that gets him away from what he should be doing."Bryant also speculated that Howard, in his first season with Los Angeles, may not be accustomed to the Lakers' standards."(Howard) has never been in a position where someone is driving him as hard as I am, as hard as this organization is," Bryant told MacMullan. "It's win a championship or everything is a complete failure. That's just how (the Lakers) do it. And that's foreign to him."When you think about it, there aren't many organizations that look at it that way. There are only two that can really honestly say that's what they live by -- Los Angeles and Boston."Howard preached patience in a recent interview with ESPN's Stephen A. Smith, pointing to the fact that Bryant and Shaquille O'Neal needed three years before winning a championship with the Lakers. But the 34-year-old Bryant, who is averaging 27.6 points per game in his 17th NBA season, is approaching this season with more desperation."We don't have three years," Kobe said. "We've got this year."Howard is listed as day to day, and his status is uncertain for Thursday's game against theBoston Celtics. The Lakers are hopeful Gasol's injury will prompt Howard to return "sooner than later," a team source told ESPNLosAngeles.com.ESPNBoston's Jackie MacMullan, ESPNLosAngeles.com's Dave McMenamin and ESPNLosAngeles.com's Ramona Shelburne contributed to this report.

Nash is 39 today.
Underdog and Under = money in the bank in this series longterm.

Celts on back end of b2b and line is -2.5 vs a rested LAL team that is rolling? Plus have had much success in Boston last couple years? Seem about right from initial #s coming in. Nets were -4 rested with all their players. No Rondo is worth a few points. Remember this Lakers team has been favored in road games. Clearly a stronger power # than the Celtics. Lakers -5 in Toronto and Celts +4? 9 point difference for Yag? I imagine Dwight is playing with this line. Kobe hates being guarded by Lee and Bradley.

The storm hitting the north east this weekend is supposed to bring 2-3 feet of snow to the New England area.... Denver is scheduled to play in Boston Sunday night. Boston has won and covered 14 of their last 15 Sunday home games

Boston and Lakers played 4 times on Thursday in Boston since KG came to the team. Result is 4 Unders.

Took plus 2 minus 15 cents with Chicago first quarter. Denver last 8 home games would have covered this number 1 time. Refs seem to favor Chicago but hard to ignore team histories
Probably should add Denver has stunk at home on Thursday

Chicago very averge away on Thursday. Denver has tied team record for consecutive wins for last 3 years. Denver 17-1 ATS on 1 days rest and Chicago 3-8 ATS on 2 days rest moving into a FRIDAY ROAD GAME. Strong gut feeling Denver takes over late.

Some of these trends are simply painful to have slipped into my brain. How about this 1? Bulls haven't dropped back to back games in 2 months. For a team with 20 losses, pretty impressive.

Pretty good angle. Hopefully I cash first quarter and wish everyone GL

@kobebryant: On our way to the Garden. Ready to do that work. If D12 is healthy he will play if he's not he won't. Simple math #countonmediahype

Would be weary taking the Lakers with Monty McCutchen in the house. Home teams just win under his whistle...

Lakers been terrible so far on defense and on boards. I think they are done for this game...

Should go under because the public is on it? I could understand the logic with that C's total with EVERYONE screaming under... but that won't always work. In fact if you ever watch consensus #'s and how they are graded.. it's always within 1% of 50% with most all teams and totals.

Bulls backers tough break tonight with a terrible shooting Denver team shooting lights out. Usually sub 40% shooters like Iggy and Chandler outside the paint can't miss. Just a tough break for what seems like it should be the right side from a Bulls offensive standpoint.
