The Braves are on the verge of acquiring Rangers first baseman Mark Teixeira.

The deal is done, pending a review of the medical records of the players involved, according to major-league sources.

The Braves will receive Teixeira and left-handed reliever Ron Mahay.

The Rangers will receive catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia, Class A shortstop Elvis Andrus and two pitching prospects.

One of the prospects is believed to be Class AA left-hander Matt Harrison.

The Rangers had been split on whether they wanted Harrison, in part because he recently experienced shoulder trouble.

However, Harrison underwent an MRI that revealed no damage, and the Rangers evidently are willing to take him despite their concerns.

The addition of Teixeira, 27, would dramatically transform the Braves' lineup, giving them a second switch-hitter with power to join third baseman Chipper Jones.

The Braves rank fifth in the National League in runs scored, but their on-base/slugging percentage at first base is the worst in the majors.

Teixeira, who does not become a free agent until after next season, also would give the Braves lineup protection against the likely departure of center fielder Andruw Jones as a free agent this off-season.

The Angels also made a strong bid for Teixeira, offering first baseman Casey Kotchman and left-hander Joe Saunders. They were willing to include a third player, but not at the level the Rangers were seeking, sources said.

The Diamondbacks and Dodgers also had been interested in Teixeira, but neither was willing to trump the Braves' proposal.

Saltalamacchia, 22, is perhaps the single best player the Rangers were offered, a switch-hitting catcher with power who offers more upside than Kotchman.

The Braves were reluctant to part with "Salty," who also can play first base. But they would have no place to play him if they had Teixeria through '08; catcher Brian McCann is signed through 2012 with a club option for '13.

Teixeira is earning $9 million this season, and his salary could rise to $12 million next season in his final year of arbitration.

It is almost certain he would not sign a contract extension before becoming a free agent; his agent, Scott Boras, prefers his clients' values to be determined on the open market.

However, Teixeira attended Georgia Tech in Atlanta and might be open to signing with the Braves long-term.

Except for Harrison he was our best lh starter, sooner or later we have to invest in some young pitchers and just take our licks, I think Reyes will be good after a couple seasons, just look at how far Chuck James has come.

ESPNEWS & MLB.com: Teixeira to the Braves

ATLANTA -- Barring any unforeseen developments, Mark Teixeira will be serving as the Braves' new starting first baseman on Tuesday night. One Major League source confirmed late Monday morning that the Braves and Rangers are finalizing a deal that will send Teixeira and left-handed reliever Ron Mahay to Atlanta in exchange for catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia, shortstop prospect Elvis Andrus and two players to be named later.

One of those two players could be left-handed pitcher Matt Harrison, who came to Atlanta on Monday to have his sore left shoulder evaluated by Braves doctors. The Rangers will be able to choose two prospects, and it's believed they'll both be pitchers.

Teixeira, who is hitting .297 with a .397 on-base percentage and .524 slugging percentage this year, immediately bolsters the Braves' lineup and makes them legitimate postseason contenders. The 27-year-old first baseman could earn around $12 million through arbitration next year and then be eligible for free agency.

While getting Teixeira, who has averaged 38 homers over the past three seasons, is the centerpiece of the deal, the Braves will also greatly benefit from the presence of Mahay, who will become their only current left-handed reliever. The 36-year-old southpaw has limited opponents to a .236 batting average this year. Left-handed hitters have batted .250 against him.

The Braves have seen their first basemen hit .211 with a .270 on-base percentage and .363 slugging percentage -- all of which rank as the lowest marks in the Majors.

Do they? I dont know how big a difference this makes...their offense was already top 5 in the NL...i dont think thats their problem

Look at the new lineup 2-7 and you tell me that a switch hitting cleanup hitter doesnt help. There were no pitchers out there to get, all the trade bait is sub-par, the braves need Smoltz and hudson to anchor the team and as long as Chucky, Caryle, and Reyes can keep afloat we are ok to get into the playoffs where a 5 man rotation isnt necessary. We also got a lh reliever to replace Gonzalez so thats about the best we can do. We are living in a hitters era right now, I am glad the braves had some balls and went out there and got a name to go with all our farm boys...With Andrew's departure this looks like a good move to solidify the middle of the lineup.

1. Kelly Johnson/Willie Harris
2. Renteria
3. C Jones
4. Teixeira
5. A Jones
6. Francour
7. McCann
8. Diaz
9. Pitcher

Something like that...With Willie Harris and Escabar as well as Diaz to mobe around against lh and rh pitching....Thats nasty.

wow... trading a strenth in the system... (prospects from the farm and one of their 2 good young hitting starting catchers) for and big bat, a lefty specialist, and insurance for incase jones walks... i m stunned... trouts right.. it is a selleers markets for pitching... so going after a bat i thnk is genius... i m glad that the braves have a guy who has the balls to pull something like that...but hey he manages the team, payroll, and farm as well as anyone i have ever seen
I tip my cap you John Scerholtz(sp) the smartest GM in the game in my opinion now

Schuerholz has made plenty of bad trades:

Gave up Bret Boone and Ryan Klesko for Quilvio Veras, Reggie Sanders and Wally Joyner.
Gave up Jermaine Dye for Michael Tucker.
Gave up David Justice and Marquis Grissom for Kenny Lofton and Alan Embree.
Gave up Adam Wainwright, Jason Marquis and Ray King for J.D. Drew.
Gave up Kevin Millwood for Johnny Estrada.
Gave up Jason Schmidt for Denny Neagle.

I think the common theme here is he is willing to trade youngsters. As a Rangers fan I'm pretty pleased with this trade. It looks like we're gonna get 4 of the Braves top 5 prospects. This is a much bigger return for Tex than many thought Daniels would get as he effectively played several teams against each other and let the offers build up.

The Rangers should be thrilled with the return they are getting on Teixeira. For the Braves its more mixed,if they don't get Teixeira long term and miss the playoffs this season then this is a huge blunder. I applaud the courage of the deal but I question the wisdom of it.

i mean its an ok move

seems like a lot to give up to have a guy for a year and 2 months though...

and i dont think its gonna make a damn bit of difference as far as this year

ya he has made some bad move, and ya it looks for only a little more then a yr b/c he is a boras talent.. but sitll a shrewed move in my opinon....

we will see how good of a deal it is..they are giving up their best prospects and we have already seen how good salty is
