Someone explain to me again why a late hit on a 4th-down play isn't a first down? How did Ohio State get the ball?

it happened after the play was short of the 1st down line...so possession changes to ohio st, then they are backed up 15...it's kinda stupid

Not sure either

It didn't really make sense, but they said the penalty occurred after the play was over. BS call for sure.
How did millen con the lions into giving him a GM job and then con ESPN into doing these big games. He is fucking awful.

Late hits always occur after the play is over.
It was the way the refs worded it that gave Ohio state the ball.
That's the thing,.if after the play out makes sense. That was during the play
Not sure either
boyd running out of bounds with 00 left instead of chucking to the end zone, brilliant

By definition a late hit is after the play.
how the hell is the line not atleast -0.5
So if its 4th & 1, and the guy is stopped short. But while on the ground the guy hits him late, its not an auto first down?
So how is a late hit or unsportsmanlike penalty assessed on a similar play involving a qb or receiver? Assume 4th and whatever....incomplete pass but late hit. The play is over short of the line to gain but they're given a first down correct??
What am I missing?

is the penalty then assessed on the offensive end?
Again, I think we all agree that the refs made a bad call. No one is saying otherwise.
Story of the Bowls. It is what it is.
