<!-- end wide photo -->Florida again makes the biggest jump in the latest edition of our class rankings, which we updated to reflect recent movers and shakers. The lineup shuffled quite a bit as we approach signing day.

The Gators' class surges to the top, unseating Miami with a flurry of upper-echelon prospects coming on board in the last 10 days. There is just too much team speed, impact guys and athleticism with needs being met now for us not to place them at the top.

Miami drops only to No. 2 and Georgia to No. 3. As Florida continues to add elite players to its growing class and so does Clemson, their rise in the rankings created a bit of a windfall and also led us to reevaluate some classes behind them. We also expanded from a top 15 to a top 25. Obviously rankings are a hot topic this time of year, but they are subjective as always. Our criteria for a class is likely much different than others, which is what makes all this debatable and fun.

Notre Dame noticeably drops No. 3 to No. 7; it has compiled a very good class with multiple needs being addressed but doesn't have as many elite or impact guys as the classes ranked ahead of them.

Teams No. 15 thru 25 may surprise some as well, but really take a close look at the classes and you will see all have a legitimate argument for being there.

1. (7) Florida

23 verbal commitments, 11 ESPN 150 prospects
The addition of four ESPN 150 players plus depth throughout with the addition of CB Adrian Bushell (DeSoto, Texas) has solidified this ranking for now.

2390.gif
2. (1) Miami
26 verbal commitments, 10 ESPN 150 prospects
Yes, the Canes have lost a few but still have pledges from four of the top seven outside linebackers, including No. 1 OLB Arthur Brown (Wichita, Kan./East) and No. 2 OLB Sean Spence (Miami/Northwestern). Needs have been met at wide receiver and quarterback.

61.gif
3. (2) Georgia

25 verbal commitments, nine ESPN 150 prospects
A lot of impact guys coupled with needs at running back being addressed. It needs to keep TE Dwayne Allen (Fayetteville, NC/Sanford) from being lured away.

228.gif
4. (8) Clemson

20 verbal commitments, seven ESPN 150 prospects
The No. 1 overall player in DaQuan Bowers (Bamberg, S.C./Bamberg-Ehrhardt) plus multiple ESPN 150 guys, including DT Brandon Thompson's (Thomasville, Ga.) addition this week, has really elevated an already stellar class for the Tigers.

194.gif
5. (4)Ohio State

18 verbal commitments, eight ESPN 150 prospects
Recent in-state commits FB Jermil Martin (Cleveland/Glenville) and S Zach Domicone (Xenia, Ohio/Beavercreek) fill needs. Still in the mix for No. 1 QB Terrelle Pryor (Jeannette, Pa.) and No. 3 CB Brandon Harris (Miami/BTW). Have been in a holding pattern as of late.

201.gif
6. (6) Oklahoma

19 verbal commitments, eight ESPN 150 prospects
With Julio Jones (Foley, Ala.) a serious candidate to be a Sooner, Oklahoma could add to an impressive group. It added teammates ESPN 150 WR Jameel Owens and Stacy McGee (Muskogee, Okla.) and two junior college commits.

87.gif
7. (3)Notre Dame

22 verbal commitments, 10 ESPN 150 prospects
Has a very strong class but needs to close strong to bump back into the top five.

30.gif
8. (5) USC

16 verbal commitments, eight ESPN 150 prospects
Needs met in the offensive line and at wide receiver as well as defensive line help, too. Must do its best to retain ATH Joe Adams (Little Rock, Ark./Central Arkansas Christian).

333.gif
9. (8) Alabama

26 verbal commitments, four ESPN 150 prospects
In a holding pattern right now with a great class, its best in years. Needs to close strong with Julio Jones' signature and a couple others. Nonetheless, this class should get the ball rolling in the right direction for Nick Saban and his staff.

251.gif
10. (10) Texas

20 verbal commitments, nine ESPN 150 prospects
Same old class, different year -- and we mean that in a good way. Texas continues to grab who it wants, when it wants.

99.gif
11. (11) LSU

23 verbal commitments, four ESPN 150 prospects
This is the one class that could close very strong down the stretch as they are heavily in the mix for many of the nation's top undeclared prospects, including WR Deandre Brown (Ocean Springs, Miss.). Could end up in the top eight or higher.

130.gif
12. (12) Michigan

19 verbal commitments, five ESPN 150 prospects
Could late surge snare QB Terrelle Pryor, among others? Stay tuned.

52.gif
13. (13) Florida State

21 verbal commitments, five ESPN 150 prospects
Off the field issues and the departure of John Lilly to Georgia has not made a dent -- FSU is posting a strong class. OT Zebrie Sanders (Clayton, Ohio/North Clayton) was a nice pickup.

26.gif
14. (14) UCLA

21 verbal commitments, four ESPN 150 prospects
It just has to hold onto all these guys and solidify this class between now and February 6th.

245.gif
15. (15) Texas A&M

27 verbal commitments, three ESPN 150 prospects
Added DE Eric Harper (Marrero, La./John Ehret), who previously was committed to Nebraska and Louisiana Tech. After reportedly having his scholarship pulled, DE Kapron Lewis-Moore (Weatherford, Texas) is now back on board. Could close with some surprise commitments on signing day.

259.gif
16. Virginia Tech

29 verbal commitments, one ESPN 150 prospect
Every year it proves college rosters aren't made up top to bottom with high-profile kids. It gets the few highly-touted guys here and there, but its true recruiting prowess lies in its evaluation of the player graded in the 77-79 range who end up being great ones.

356.gif
17. Illinois

27 verbal commitments, one ESPN 150 prospects
Not as many high-profile names in this class as last year, but a ton of very good football players with the upside to be great like DE Corey Liuget (Hialeah, Fla.).

2.gif
18. Auburn

25 verbal commitments, one ESPN 150 prospects
Besides the postgraduates in this class, it is still a tough class with some playmakers at wide receiver, which is a need. The Tigers are like Virginia Tech in that they know what a football player is regardless of hype.

2483.gif
19. Oregon

20 verbal commitments, one ESPN 150 prospects
The Ducks have become national all of a sudden as winning, Nike and those great uniforms have garnered interest from some of the land's best players.

152.gif
20. NC State

21 verbal commitments, two ESPN 150 prospects
The class is a little top heavy but the middle portion is strong with guys like LB William Beasley (Milton, Fla.). Regardless, QB Mike Glennon (Centreville, Va./Westfield) is the guy to look to in this class.

221.gif
21. Pittsburgh

19 verbal commitments, four ESPN 150 prospects
Despite still not leading Pitt to a bowl game Dave Wannstedt remains a top recruiter, especially in Western Pennsylvania. Four ESPN 150 prospects include the big, talented wide receiver Jonathan Baldwin (Aliquippa, Pa.).

158.gif
22. Nebraska

19 verbal commitments, one ESPN 150 prospect
Boasting a strong class in the spring of 2007, the Cornhuskers class was headed for an all-time meltdown, but new head coach Bo Pelini has stopped the bleeding and has Nebraska headed back in the right direction. Luring back linebacker Will Compton (Bonne Terre, Mo./North County) and defensive end Josh Williams (Denton, Texas) have been small victories for this new staff.

9.gif
23. Arizona State

27 verbal commitments, one ESPN 150 prospect
Following a successful first season at the helm in 2007, Dennis Erickson is piecing together a solid first full class. The recent addition of running Ryan Bass (Corona, Calif./Centennial) is a nice addition.

213.gif
24. Penn State

14 verbal commitments, one ESPN 150 prospect
Joe Pa seems to be restocking the shelves at Linebacker U. Louisiana native Michael Mauti (Mandeville, La.) leads a solid class of linebacker commits.

8.gif
25. Arkansas

18 verbal commitments, two ESPN 150 prospects
Bobby Petrino's first class features two ESPN 150 prospects in promising quarterback Tyler Wilson (Greenwood, Ark.) and running back De'Anthony Curtis (Camden, Ark./Fairview).
Also considered: Washington, Missouri, Minnesota, Stanford, Colorado, South Carolina and Arizona.

Texas Tech gets defensive

While Texas Tech is well-known for its creative and explosive passing offense, the Red Raiders landed an elite 2008 prospect with similar attributes on defense. Under Armour All-American Keanon Cooper (Dallas/Skyline) may be the most versatile defensive prospect in this class and is an excellent pickup for a one of the most prolific offenses in the country currently struggling to keep opponents out of the end zone. The ESPN 150 projected outside linebacker chose in-state Texas Tech over Kansas, Kansas State and Minnesota.

"Staying in-state was just an added bonus. I really liked the school, the campus and the coaching staff at Tech. It was the school I felt most comfortable at," said Cooper.

When evaluating the sixth best defensive player out of the state of Texas in 2008 last spring, we were more impressed with Cooper as a total football player than with his excellent physical skills. There was not one defensive position where this kid did not shine and wreak havoc. Whether employed at strong safety, outside linebacker or even defensive end, Cooper showed tremendous instincts and playmaker-type qualities.

As we collected senior film of this impressive Skyline athlete, we saw the added bulk and improved explosiveness needed to be productive weakside linebacker at the next level. Cooper's first step quickness and jump to the football are excellent. If he is covered up and allowed to pursuit backside, we project this kid will turn into a tackling machine at Tech. The power this kid generates in the short area for a 195-pound defensive prospect may be his most striking attribute; ESPN's No. 12-rated outside 'backer plays bigger and faster than his listed measurables and should be able to hold his point versus front side run as well.

We project he will work his way into early blitz packages with his outstanding closing speed combined with his quickness and experience as an edge player. Great range and current size make strong safety a good possibility early in his career, but with a good frame for continued physical development and better vertical attacking skills than lateral, a slide up to linebacker is more than likely.

"The coaches like me at strong safety and it was great watching film with them and seeing how they want to use me," explained Cooper.
When asked about the possibility of linebacker, Cooper acknowledged the Red Raider coaches saw similar attributes as the Scouts Inc. staff. <>

"They like my ability to play down in the box and my explosiveness off the edge. They plan to move me around a lot and get me involved like a linebacker."

Cooper is Mike Leach's 15th commitment heading into signing day including four JUCO prospects. While the class does not feature many top-tier prospects, there is an emphasis on defense which helps fill roster needs in an effort to create balance with its high-scoring offense. Joining Cooper on defense is end Joey Fowler (Oklahoma City, Okla./Westmoore), another explosive and potentially disruptive prospect with the physical tools needed to provide much needed pressure off the edge for Tech.

WR Julio Jones (left) and QB Terrelle Pryor are the two most coveted undecided prospects.
</DD></DL>
<!-- end wide photo -->Recruitniks nationwide are abuzz with where the top uncommitted prospects across the land will sign. Here's a look at the top 10 uncommitted prospects in the ESPN 150 and what lies ahead for them leading up to February 6:

1. WR Julio Jones (Foley, Ala.)
ESPN 150 rank: 2

Many may argue that Terrelle Pryor is the biggest mystery in recruiting, but for our money it is without a doubt Julio Jones as he has not said a word to anyone in regards to his recruiting experience -- ever. Heck, just about two months ago he announced his five official visits (Alabama, Oklahoma, Florida, FSU and Texas Tech), but that was it with no elaboration whatsoever. I, for one, actually admire this young man's approach; many prospects are all about the attention and publicity, but not Jones. He deserves some credit for just taking the time to make the right choice for him without anyone's interference. Florida State was the latest stop this past weekend on the recruiting trail, and if it were our guess, this is a three-horse race between Alabama, Florida and Florida State, in no particular order.
2. QB Terrelle Pryor (Jeannette, Pa.)
ESPN 150 rank: 4

The minute Rich Rodriguez left West Virginia for Ann Arbor and David Cutcliffe cut out to be the head coach at Duke, everything changed for this class' greatest athlete. Prior to all this happening, we believe Pryor's choices were in this order: Tennessee, West Virginia and Ohio State with a few hangers on down the line. Now, the tables have turned and Oregon and Michigan have thrust themselves to the forefront for Pryor's services. If Oregon weren't so far away, the Ducks would likely be in the lead by a few lengths. Obviously both offenses fit Pryor's skills perfectly and while I'm sure he would love to contribute right away, I think he is smart enough to understand that red-shirting isn't a bad option either. Rodriguez has played with a freshman before in Pat White and if he wants to truly run his scheme in year one, he will likely hand the keys over to Pryor as the ultimate recruiting tool in luring him to Ann Arbor.
3. RB Darrell Scott (Moorpark, Calif./St. Bonaventure)
ESPN 150 rank: 9

The best thing that ever happened to Mack Brown at Texas in regards to landing Scott was Jamaal Charles' decision to declare for the NFL draft -- it leaves the void of an elite load carrier in the Longhorns' backfield. Brown still has to contend with the family connection Colorado has (Scott's uncle is wide receiver Josh Smith) and the young, athletic Gators starving for a bona fide running back to team up next to Tim Tebow. For our money, Texas is in the lead.
4. RB Jamie Harper (Jacksonville, Fla./Trinity Christian)
ESPN 150 rank: 12

[+] Enlarge

Gary Bogdon for ESPN.com
Jamie Harper should make an instant impact no matter where he signs.

Speaking of hotly pursued running backs by the Florida Gators, Harper is going to be tough to lure away from Clemson fresh off his official visit this past weekend -- he has made no secret of his interest in the Tigers. However, he has stood firm on his stance to make sure he educates himself on all his options, including cold weather climates like Illinois.

5. WR Deandre Brown (Ocean Springs, Miss.)
ESPN 150 rank: 24

Recently leaping into the top 25 of the ESPN 150, Brown has impressed us with an excellent postseason. His improved receiving polish to go along with his 6-foot-6, physically-impressive frame has made him a highly sought-after talent on the recruiting trail. While coveted, Brown remains open on his recruitment at this point and has yet to take any official visits; LSU, Florida, Texas Tech, Auburn, Alabama and in-state Ole Miss and Southern Mississippi are currently atop his list. Early playing time and a throwing offense to better utilize his skills appear be the decisive factors in his decision. Current LSU tight end Richard Dickson is an Ocean Springs grad and the familiarity to the program could push the Tigers towards the top if he decides to leave the state.

6. CB T.J. Bryant (Tallahassee, Fla./Lincoln)
ESPN 150 rank: 25

There is more than one physically-talented cornerback in this 2008 class. T.J. Bryant (Tallahassee, Fla./Lincoln) may be our No. 2-rated prospect behind recent LSU pledge Patrick Johnson (Pembroke Pines, Fla./Ely), but he is just as coveted. Planning to announce on signing day, Bryant still has six schools in the mix -- LSU, FSU, Florida, Miami, Alabama and USC -- and plans to visit each (five officially and one unofficially). He is keeping his recruitment close to the vest, and each of his final six schools certainly has their selling points. LSU is coming off a national championship, but the loss of respected defensive coordinator Bo Pelini and the recent pledge from the country's top shutdown corner could hurt the Tigers. FSU has been stagnant on the recruiting trail, but it is the home team and has had a host of Lincoln players succeed in its program. Florida is thin and young at corner and the chance to play next to Will Hill (West Orange, N.J./Saint Peter's) and Dee Finley (Auburn, Ala.), ESPN's top two safety prospects, has to be enticing. Physical tools would fit well as a Miami corner, and Randy Shannon has shown the recruiting touch for in-state defensive players. Nick Saban appears to have already made a good impression on Bryant; his ties to the NFL and defensive pedigree could greatly influence the No. 24 player in the country. USC is USC, the tradition and reputation for producing NFL first rounders is attractive. The X-factor could be which track program most impresses the accomplished hurdler.

7. CB Brandon Harris (Miami/Booker T. Washington)
ESPN 150 rank: 28

While in Orlando as an Under Armour All-American, Harris, coming off a 15-0 senior season and 4A state championship, said he will not make his college announcement until signing day and is still very much open. At this point, LSU, Florida, Ohio State and Miami are the finalists, with the Tigers a possible frontrunner. Harris has already taken an official visit to Baton Rouge and enjoyed himself and visited Gainesville as well. Randy Shannon seems to have made an impression on him, like he has with most southern Florida prospects this year, and a visit is coming up. The Buckeyes hosted Harris this past weekend, but OSU does not appear to be a frontrunner at this point. A proven winner and one of the more competitive athletes in this class, this year's national champs could be in the lead for the defensive playmaker.

Massive DT Omar Hunter looks to be a lock for the Gators.

8. DT Omar Hunter (Buford, Ga.)
ESPN 150 rank: 37

If this one-time Notre Dame commit doesn't end up verbally committed to Florida within the next week, we will be shocked.

9. DT Brandon Thompson (Thomasville, Ga.)
ESPN 150 rank: 39

We remember watching film onThompson early last spring and being wowed by his explosiveness and ability to cause havoc along the line of scrimmage. We were also surprised by the early lack of offers as at that time Clemson was the only program showing great interest. Since that initial evaluation,Thompson has become a well-known name in recruiting to fans and coaches. As we head down the final stretch toward national signing day the defensive tackle has plenty of options. Several schools throughout the months have been in and out of the mix but one constant has been Clemson. The Tigers have been long rumored to be his destination and at this point seem to still be the safe bet. LSU and Tennessee and are also seriously in the mix though. The Under Armour All-American visited Knoxville this past weekend and already visited LSU. Miami and Ohio State, while long shots, are also in the picture.Thompson was close to announcing at the UA Game and a decision from him could very likely come in the next week or two.

10. DE William Green (Birmingham, Ala./Spain Park)
ESPN 150 rank: 43
Green is one of the top speed edge rushers in the 2008 class, making him a hot commodity especially this late in the recruiting process. The Alabama native is just beginning to take visits and has a busy month ahead of him. He stayed in-state and visited Auburn this past weekend and also has official visits set up for Florida and Clemson later in the month. While those three programs are the only ones with visit dates set, Alabama and Tennessee are also in the mix. It is tough to declare a favorite for Green at this point and we would not be surprised if he waits until national signing day to announce.

DaQuan Bowers terrorized Under Armour offensive linemen from his defensive end spot.
</DD></DL>

<!-- end wide photo -->With less than a month to go until signing day, the final major adjustments to our ESPN 150 have been solidified. After collectively breaking down each of the premier all-star games and popping in tape of our last unevaluated state playoff contests, we feel we have put together a credible and objective listing of the top 150 college prospects in the country.

While we did make some significant alterations midweek at our own Under Armour All-America Game with players we felt were vastly under- or over-graded after evaluating their live performances once again, this rendition of the ESPN 150 reflects the culmination of our practice and game reports and more importantly, a general yearlong overview of which prospects currently possess the elite physical gifts needed to excel at the college level.

[+] Enlarge

Tom Hauck for ESPN.com
DaQuan Bowers is the second defensive prospect ever to claim the No. 1 ESPN 150 ranking; Class of 2006 prospect Myron Rolle was the first.

In a "War Room" type atmosphere, our debate over who should, if anyone, overtake wide receiver Julio Jones (Foley, Ala.) for the top spot in the ESPN 150 was long and hotly debated. No matter how we painted the picture, we just kept coming back to defensive end DaQuan Bowers (Bamberg, S.C./Ehrhardt) and his dominance as an edge pass-rusher, not to mention his prowess in the kicking game.

Jones may be one of the most talented and physically gifted athletes at the position in recent years, but this class is very deep with tall, big-catch receiver prospects, a microcosm of the reoccurring talent at the position in general. Conversely, dominant pass-rushers at any level are rare and highly coveted. Just tune into the NFL draft every April and you will see a disruptive defensive end next in line behind the franchise quarterback.

At 6-foot-4 and a chiseled 265 pounds, Bowers is a rare physical specimen. His supreme blend of first-step quickness and power off the edge were basically impossible for some of the elite tackle prospects in the country to mirror all week. A 1,200-yard rusher in high school as a senior, Bowers' athleticism for his size is extraordinary and his room for future physical development is outstanding. This kid could tip the scales at 290 pounds in college, retain his speed and quickness and be a top-10 pick out of Clemson in the 2011 draft.

Bowers' move to the top spot did precipitate a natural shift in the top 10 of the ESPN 150. Jones fell to No. 2 while Will Hill (West Orange, N.J./Saint Peter's ) slid to No. 3 and saw a position change from athlete to safety, his expected college position. QB Terrelle Pryor (Jeannette, Pa.) dropped to No. 4 overall and is now labeled a quarterback, his projected position with the probable schools remaining on his list. We actually slightly raised the grades of Jones, Hill and Pryor as a result of their senior seasons of great accomplishments, so their slight drop in ranking actually has nothing to do with anything other than Bowers' rise to No. 1.

As one of the focal points of Silver's attack, A.J. Green made a few great grabs in the UA Game.

A.J. Green's (Ridgeville, S.C./Summerville) impressive performance all week moved him back to the No. 5 spot, where he had been ranked most of the season. His immediate impact at Georgia is now a definite in our eyes.

Jermie Calhoun (Van, Texas), although impressive at times as an Under Armour All-American, did fall to No. 7 as a result of Green's and Arthur Brown's (Wichita, Kan./East) jumps. Newly committed LSU Tiger Patrick Johnson moved up one spot to No. 8, bumping Darrell Scott to No. 9. Dee Finley (Auburn, Ala.) stays firmly at No. 10 despite some arguments that his standout performance down in Orlando garnered a higher ranking.

There were a few considerable changes in the top 25 as well: two prospects moving into elite status and one significant move out. Sean Spence (Miami/Northwestern) continued to shine after his midweek evaluation, impressing coaches and fellow players alike with his speed, deceptive strength and keen nose for the football. Spence, now rated as the No. 2 outside linebacker prospect, should explode with size on his rangy frame at Miami and continue the tradition of fast-attacking Canes 'backers.

Tight end Blake Ayles' (Orange, Calif./Lutheran) blend of size, athleticism and excellent hands in the passing game now has us thinking he will step into Fred Davis' spot as a true freshman, eventually growing into a solid in-line blocker and subsequent first-round draft pick. Ayles now claims the No. 1 tight end spot with Jonathan Baldwin's (Aliquippa, Pa.) permanent move to wide receiver. Baldwin was impressive split out wide in the U.S. Army game, his impending starting position at Pitt next fall. We still feel Baldwin may grow into an H-back in time.

Tom Hauck for ESPN.com
Mike Glennon showed poise, accuracy and solid decision-making all week at the UA Game.

Quarterbacks Mike Glennon (Centreville, Va./Westfield) and Kyle Parker (Jacksonville, Fla./Bartram Trail) moved up in the ESPN 150 and also to the Nos. 3 and 4 ranked QBs in the class.

For every Sean Spence, a player we have loved since last June, there is an E.J. Manuel (Virginia Beach, Va./Bayside), a QB prospect we may have over-evaluated as a fluid and pure passer. Our previous No. 1-rated quarterback as a result of Blaine Gabbert's (Ballwin, Mo./Parkway West) season-ending injury, Manuel looked like a smaller version of JaMarcus Russell getting off the practice bus on day one in Orlando. His great physicality and surprising foot speed were clearly evident from the get-go. However, he is raw, and as good of an athlete as he is, he still needs to develop as a passer much in the same way Terrelle Pryor does. Nonetheless, the raw materials are definitely present for Jimbo Fisher to polish up and mold into a good one in Tallahassee.

Sticking with signal-callers dipping in rank, QBs Nick Crissman (Huntington Beach, Calif./Edison) and Landry Jones (Artesia, N.M.) also saw their stock drop in the ESPN 150 after further evaluations. Like Manuel, the skills are available for each, but as a quarterback class as a whole, we are not convinced this is an elite class, rather a very good one with upside and guys who have their best football ahead of them.

New to the ESPN 150 and jumping both Crissman and Jones in quarterback rank is Arkansas commit Tyler Wilson (Greenwood, Ark.). This is a kid we tried to invite late to the Under Armour All-America game due to Taylor Cook's (Eagle Lake, Texas/Rice) injury and think is a perfect fit for Bobby Petrino's system at Arkansas.

There are a few other notable offensive skill prospects who saw their stock go down somewhat in the updated ESPN 150. WR Deion Walker (Christchurch, Va.) never had a chance to get going in Orlando due to a knee injury, but even on his first few days of practice we noticed his listed measurables did not quite add up and the talent at defensive back exposed some of his weaknesses. This is something that happened to each and every player during the week in Orlando and San Antonio for that matter, as many prospects were truly challenged for the first time. In the backfield, ATH Kye Staley (Guthrie, Okla.) has gained some weight that has changed his running style from a slasher to more of a bruiser.

[+] Enlarge

Tom Hauck for ESPN.com
Terrance Parks' physicality at cornerback was a wake-up call for the elite receivers at the UA Game.

One of the main guys exposing weakness in the offensive skill players in Orlando was cornerback Terrance Parks (Fairburn, Ga./Creekside). Hurt throughout most of his high school career due to an ACL injury, Parks showed superior physicality jamming and pressing receivers off the line as an Under Armour All-American but also looked smooth in transition turning and running with the elite wideouts in the game. Parks moved to the No. 5 corner spot and impressively from No. 92 to 35 in the ESPN 150.

In the front seven, Uona Kaveinga's (Lawndale, Calif./Leuzinger) fast, physical style of play combined with his mental intelligence slid the hard-hitting inside linebacker headed to UCLA into the top 100. However, as Kaveinga moved up the inside linebacker rankings, Jon Major (Parker, Colo./Ponderosa) fell down from 111 to 137. The physical run-stopper came into the game with a twisted ankle and was not as laterally quick or fluid as his competition at linebacker on Saturday.

In the defensive trenches, Templeton Hardy (Como, Miss./North Panola) dropped out of the ESPN 150. He is going to end up as an offensive lineman in college in our opinion but will start out on the defensive line. The massive lineman heading to Mississippi State looks the part and has a future, only it is on offense not at defensive tackle.

Vaughn Dotsy (Ventura, Calif./Saint Bonaventure) also saw a slip out of the ESPN 150 this week, but Khaled Holmes (Santa Ana, Calif./Mater Dei) impressed mightily with his well-rounded skills as an Under Armour All-American, leaping up to No. 67 from 144. Dotsy was essentially a victim of numbers and a back injury late in the season.

Center Braxston Cave impressed coaches all week with his technique.

Centers Ben Jones (Centreville, Ala./Bibb county), a player highly regarded by his coaches in Orlando, and Braxston Cave (Granger, Ind./Penn), a high school prospect with the rare physical tools and technique at the position, leaped to ESPN 150 status.

On the outside at offensive tackle, the general consensus among NFL coaches and evaluators was that the prospects all looked the part with their tall, well-built bodies but physically are not quite ready to anchor the run as college freshmen. Technique improvements are needed by all. No. 1-rated OT Tyler Love (Birmingham, Ala./Mountain Brook) remains at the top but dropped down slightly in the ESPN 150 due to some other prospects' rises, while Dann O'Neill (Grand Haven, Mich.), a player who gave Bowers the best matchup all week during one-on-ones, made a significant jump into the top 100 at No. 69.

As our ESPN 150 is concluded for 2008, we are well aware that assigning a high school prospect a number ranking and signaling out 150 prospects out of 2500 evaluations is very difficult with all the variables these student-athletes will face on and off the field at the next level. After much analysis, we do feel the current prospects included in this elite list are the most ready from a physical and mental standpoint to make a smooth college transition and a possible early impact. Many players omitted from this list could and will develop into outstanding college players with their supreme physical tools, athleticism and eventual positional polish, but when evaluating intangibles and projecting prospects to contribute in today's game, this group is on its way.

<!-- end wide photo -->The Buckeyes arguably have the best class in the Big Ten heading into national signing day with almost half of its current commitments in the ESPN 150; a signing on February 6 by ESPN's No. 1-rated quarterback Terrelle Pryor (Jeannette, Pa.), a once OSU lean, would push it toward the top in the country. A strong class by Ron Zook last year raised some eyebrows around the country after his consecutive two-win seasons; this year's Illinois class might be comprised of more top-to-bottom quality and a trip to the Rose Bowl has silenced his recruiting critics. Rich Rodriguez has to be pleased with the prospects he inherited from Lloyd Carr that fit his explosive spread system and is trying to give Pryor the keys to run it. While Penn State landed its traditional great linebacker class, it lacks playmakers with speed and have many thinking Joe Pa has lost his recruiting touch. In part one, a look at the top six teams from 2007:
Schools in order of 2007 finish

Ohio State

Signing day storylines: Holding firm at the No. 4 spot in the latest release of our class rankings, it is hard to ignore the premium talent currently committed to Ohio State. Back-to-back BCS National Championship losses has done little to deter many of the country's elite prospects away from Columbus, and this year's class represents its on-field success far more than last February when the Buckeyes landed at No. 20 on our final rankings.

The Buckeyes currently have 18 total prospects heading into signing day with close to half claiming spots in the ESPN 150 and an impressive 11 holding Scouts Inc. grades of 80 or higher.

Offensive tackle was perhaps OSU's biggest positional need in this class with the graduation of Kirk Barton and the anticipated departure of Alex Boone; let's just say the position was filled in a big way with 6-foot-6, 290 pound Michael Brewster (Orlando, Fla./Edgewater) , 6-foot-7, 299-pound J.B. Shugarts (Spring, Texas/Klein) and 6-foot-7, 308-pound Mike Adams (Dublin, Ohio/Coffman). While the future line appears to be sturdy, the Buckeyes could use blue-chipper behind it after Todd Boeckman graduates. The much-heralded Terrelle Pryor (Jeannette, Pa.), ESPN's No. 1-rated quarterback prospect, could be the guy, but the once Buckeye lean now appears to be looking hard at Michigan and Oregon.

Defensively, the Buckeyes will be thin at linebacker in the next few years, particularly on the outside, but the position has also been addressed with Etienne Sabino (Miami/Dr. Krop) and Andrew Sweat (Washington, Pa./Trinity), two of the best and quite possible most versatile backers in this group.

Top Prospect: Sabino is an impressive physical specimen with the linebacker skills to step into Butkus Award winner James Laurinaitis' shoes in 2009 and maintain his great production. The No. 1-rated inside linebacker prospect and No. 18 overall player in the country is a rare athlete with the size and power to fill at the point of attack and the speed and sideline-to-sideline range to chase down faster ball carriers. At 228-pounds, the Florida native is extremely explosive in the short-area and can close on the football as fast and hard as any linebacker in this class. Has the versatility to play both the middle and strong side.

Class highlights: Arguably one the better offensive lines assembled in the Class of 2008 and maybe in the past few years. Brewster, who also projects at center, Shugarts and Adams sit at No. 2, 3 and 8 on our tackle board, and although their size and tenacity standout right away, it is hard to ignore their ability to work up to the next level. Running behind the blocks of granite during his career in Columbus could be Ohio native DeVoe Torrence (Massillon, Ohio/Washington), a wild card in this class. The ESPN 150 athlete flashes the strong downhill running form that fits well in OSU's power running schemes but could be equally effective chasing down backs at linebacker.

Wide receiver DeVier Posey (Cincinnati/LaSalle) is another top in-state prospect heading to Columbus.

Another highly-touted prospect who could move the chains on offense is Jake Stoneburner (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Coffman), ESPN's No. 5 ranked tight end prospect. More polished as a lean, 6-6 receiver than an in-line blocker at this point, Stoneburner possesses perhaps the best hands and catch radius in this tight end class.

Joining Sweat and Sabino on defense and possibly at linebacker is Nathan Williams (Wash. Courthouse, Ohio/Miami Trace), a physically-impressive hybrid with great vertically-attacking speed who could be developed at defensive end. In the secondary, Sabino's Dr. Krop teammate Travis Howard (Miami/Dr. Krop) is the No. 10 corner in the country and possesses great athleticism, fluidity and upside as a defensive back prospect.

Could see the field in 2008: Sabino, Sweat, Brewster (if he's 100%), Adams, Torrence, Stoneburner (in certain packages).

Illinois

Signing day storylines: Around this time last year, Ron Zook's impressive class after consecutive two-win seasons raised some eyebrows around the country. Conversely, a Rose Bowl Illinois team this year may not have landed any 2008 prospects in the mold 2007's No. 1-rated defensive end Martez Wilson or No. 3-rated receiver Arrelious Benn, but the Zooker has displayed his recruiting touch once again with quite possibly a far more balanced and deeper class. Led by ESPN 150 corner Patrick Nixon (Jacksonville, Fla./Middleburg), the Fighting Illini boast 15 prospects rated at 77 or higher on the Scouts Inc. scale compared to last year's six.

Despite landing Benn in 2007, Illinois will lack good receiver depth the next few years and filled some of that void with Alfred Jenkins (Jacksonville, Fla./Terry Parker), a potential playmaker at the next level, and Cordale Scott (Cleveland/Glenville), a smooth, big-play possession receiver. ESPN 150 6-foot-3 receiver Kenny Tate (Forestville, Md./DeMatha Catholic) is also looking strongly at Champaign as well. Look for Deries Hodge (Harrisburg, Pa./Milford), an explosive power-back currently prepping at Milford Academy, to get some carries next year with Rashard Mendenhall declaring early for the NFL draft.

Our one concern is the loss of Jeremy (J) Leman at middle linebacker and the lacking depth behind him. Justin Staples (Lakewood, Ohio/Saint Edward) and Nate Palmer (Chicago/Simeon) are serviceable outside backers but not the answer in the middle.

Top Prospect: Illinois went into Florida for Nixon and stole a good one. One of the most versatile defensive back prospects in the country, Nixon possesses great upside for the next level with his room for physical development and natural tools to mold as at the position. Despite his lack of ideal bulk, this kid will come up and pop you while providing sufficient run support. In coverage, he displays the quick feet to mirror in man-to-man and the great range needed in zone. Could be employed at safety or corner and provide his future defensive coordinator with great scheme versatility.

Class highlights: Not an overly flashy class with just one ESPN 150 member, but six top-30 positional prospects show the overall depth of talent that will complement the handful of elite blue-chippers currently on the Illinois roster. The skill positions were emphasized in this class after last year saw a focus on the offensive and defensive lines.

Nixon and Jenkins are excellent prospects on the perimeter. No. 16-rated athlete Jack Ramsey (Chicago/Neal F. Simeon) could develop behind Juice Williams at quarterback but also possesses the open-field speed and quickness that to get on the field early at another skill position. Tight end Hubie Graham (Scranton, Pa./West) is the No. 14 ranked prospect at the position in 2008 and the well-balanced, highly coveted prospect is a big land for Zook out of Pa.

Defensively, Tavon Wilson (Washington, D.C./Woodrow Wilson) should pair up with Nixon and give co-defensive coordinator Curt Mallory two physical corners on the outside. Defensive end Corey Liuget (Hialeah, Fla.) needs some polish but could be a sleeper and develop into a force across from Wilson with his good blend of size and explosiveness off the line. Whitney Mercilus (Akron, Ohio/Garfield) is another end to keep your eye on in Champaign with his good get-off and overall athleticism on the edge.
Could see the field in 2008: Nixon, Hodge and Jenkins.

Michigan

AP Photo/Tony Ding
First recruiting him at West Virginia, Rich Rodriguez is now wooing Terrelle Pryor for Michigan.

Signing day storylines: Lloyd Carr certainly established a top-15 class before announcing his retirement, but the big question for Wolverine fans is whether recently hired Rich Rodriguez can add some weapons before signing day to fit his explosive spread offense run at West Virginia. ESPN's No. 1-rated quarterback prospect Terrelle Pryor's dual-threat skills would fit perfectly in that system, but even without his presence, Rodriguez certainly has to be pleased with the present class he was left to finish despite a tumultuous 2007 season in Ann Arbor. The overall roster may be is ill-equipped for the spread -- hence the transfer of quarterback Ryan Mallet -- but the 2008 offensive class has some impressive weapons.

With the Mike Hart era over, the Wolverines needed a back and Rodriquez could have found his next Steve Slaton in Sam McGuffie (Cypress, Texas/Cy-Fair). Equally elusive on the outside and filling the playmaker void left by Mario Manningham is fellow ESPN 150 prospect receiver Darryl Stonum (Stafford, Texas/John Foster Dulles). Brandon Moore (Trotwood, Ohio/Madison) lacks good in-line blocking skills, but his athleticism in space at 6-6 frame should fit in nicely with the spread system that isolates tight ends on linebackers.

To succeed in the Big 10 you have to be able to stop the run and one of the nation's finest in that statistical category in 2006 showed vulnerability in 2007. Inside linebacker is an area in need of young physical talent, and while Michigan boasts a few prospects with perimeter skills, it currently lacks a good run stuffer in this class. It should also be noted outside 'backer Marcus Witherspoon (Absecon, N.J./Holy Spirit) is shopping his great range to Tennessee and Christian Wilson (McKees Rocks, Pa./Montour), who was projected to play offense prior to Rodriguez' arrival, is looking at North Carolina.

Top Prospect: From what tackle Dann O'Neill (Grand Haven, Mich.) showed us as an Under Armour All-American, he could have Wolverine fans forgetting about Jake Long in a few years. A bold statement, but we think this kid possesses that type of rare talent. He is massive and physical but possesses deceptively good feet for a 290-pounder who will only get bigger and stronger. The tenacious attitude to go along with his strong run blocking skills is present. A potential complete package in Ann Arbor once he polishes up as a pass protector.

Class highlights: The aforementioned offensive skill prospects (McGuffie, Stonum and Moore) who fit Rodriguez' scheme are exciting, equally impressive are the up-front prospects with the ability to block in space. Guard Kurt Wermers (Crown Point, Ind.) needs some size, but he can pull, move in space and get hand placement -- key attributes for a lineman in a zone running scheme. Tackle Elliot Mealer (Wauseon, Ohio) has tight end experience and the natural quickness that should be highlighted when he slides inside to tackle and is asked to pull and track down linebackers in space. O'Neill played and excelled in a similar scheme at Grand Haven High School, so we expect a smooth transition as well.

We talked about the need for an inside run plugger, but the Wolverines certainly have some versatile athletes for newly appointed defensive coordinator Scott Shafer to employ on the outside. Aside from Witherspoon and Wilson, J.B. Fitzgerald (West Windsor, N.J./Plainsboro) is also a fast-attacking perimeter playing who could see his good size and vertical speed slide down to end during his career in Ann Arbor. Covering those guys upfront is Mike Martin (Redford, Mich./Catholic Central), a thick, disruptive defensive tackle with all the physical tools needed to be productive at Michigan. The quality in the defensive secondary improves as well with smaller yet feisty corner Boubacar Cissoko (Detroit/Cass Technical) at corner.

Could see the field in 2008: O'Neill, McGuffie, Stonum.

Wisconsin

Signing day storylines: Bret Bielema's second season at Wisconsin may not have produced a 12-1 record, but with the injuries it is tough to view 9-4 as a disappointment. There do not seem to be any significant prospects wavering in this class. Building off 2006's success and the program's rich tradition of winning, the Badgers actually head into signing day with a class a bit deeper in top-half quality than last year but maybe still not indicative of its perennial on-field success.

Much of last fall's struggles stemmed from a disappointing defense that led the Big Ten in 2006; four top-25 positional prospects should help. Defensive end was the most glaring need for this class, and Under Armour All-American Tyler Westphal (Menasha, Wis.) was a huge pickup.

[+] Enlarge

Tom Hauck for ESPN.com
Tyler Westphal ranks as the No. 9 defensive end prospect in the 2008 class.

Top Prospect: Westphal showed he belonged in elite status with his performance at the UA Game. His pass-rush skills, overall athleticism and quickness off the edge matched what we saw on film, but this time it was against some of the better offensive tackles in the country. He'll need to add considerable bulk to stop the run and hold his base at the point of attack, but he possesses a long, rangy frame for future physical development and his best days as a football player are definitely ahead of him. Westphal showed versatility at tight end during his high school career as well.

Class highlights: Landing Westphal and the state of Wisconsin's top player for the third consecutive year is a good sign, but a commitment from Leonard Hubbard (Springfield, Ill./Sacred Heart-Griffin), the No. 7 player out of Illinois, may prove just as beneficial. Hard to find a more explosive player in the short-range than this No. 13-rated inside linebacker. Hubbard generates power very quickly between the tackles and is a fierce hitter. Already tipping the scales at 230, this kid has the frame to pack on 10 pounds of additional bulk to help his strength and durability blowing up fullbacks during his Big Ten career, which projects to be very productive. Joining Hubbard in the front seven is 6-7 defensive end Anthony Mains (Naples, Fla./Golden Gate), another under-the-radar prospect dripping with upside if Wisconsin can be patient with his physical development.

The sleeper trend continues into the Badgers' offensive class with quarterback Curt Phillips (Kingsport, Tenn./Sullivan). Mechanics need some polish but Phillips possesses the size, arm strength and athleticism sought after in elite prospects; dual-threat abilities could open things up a bit more in Madison with Phillips at the helm.

Wisconsin is in need of a punter in this class with Ken Debauche and Paul Standring graduating, and it snagged a good one in Bradley Nortman (Brookfield, Wis./Central). Nortman needs some mechanical polish but possesses a strong leg, good hang time and -- most importantly -- is used to the cold elements.

Could see the field in 2008: Hubbard.

Penn State

Signing day storylines: PSU is currently at a crossroad on and off the field. While its 2008 recruiting class shines with talent in particular areas of need like linebacker, it lacks the overall talent once seen in traditional Nittany Lions' classes. One ESPN 150 prospect compared to Pitt's four after its 5-7 record this fall is cause for much concern. Unfortunately, the stagnant class could stem from 81-year-old Joe Paterno still hanging in there and not offering the spark often needed to relate to the younger generation of prospects. However, tradition still sells and no one coach in college football represents more tradition than Joe Pa himself.

Top Prospect: Michael Mauti (Mandeville, La.) proved his No. 3 inside linebacker ranking during his senior season and against national competition at the U.S. Army All-American Game. The ESPN 150 prospect plays the game as fast and physical as any linebacker in this class and could be the best pure run stopper in 2008. He is compactly-built, layered with great bulk but is still deceptively quick pursuing between the tackles and shows a great closing burst to the football. This kid should continue the tradition of great Penn State linebackers and could quickly replace some of Dan Connor's production.

[+] Enlarge

AP Photo/Tony Dejak, Ron Schwane
Michael Zordich and Brandon Beachum form a potentially lethal linebacker duo, though Beachum may start as a running back.

Class highlights: Linebacker U should continue for the next four seasons. Aside from Mauti, the Nittany Lions stole a great one from the Buckeyes in Ohio native Michael Zordich Jr. (Youngstown, Ohio/Cardinal Mooney), one of the more instinctive and well-rounded backers in this class. His teammate Brandon Beachum (Youngstown, Ohio/Cardinal Mooney), is reportedly committed to play running back in Happy Valley, but we project his straight-line, short-area speed is more suited at linebacker.

On the outside, Michael Yancich (Washington, Pa./Trinity) could be overshadowed as a prospect by his linebacker teammate Andrew Sweat (Washington, Pa./Trinity), but Yancich is a bit more fluid and is a sound 'backer in his own right. The run support continues at safety with D'Anton Lynn (Celina, Texas), ESPN's No. 10 ranked safety prospect and one of the better down-the-in-box high-point players in this class.

It is good to see a potential playmaker in PSU's offensive class; recently committed receiver A.J. Price (Reston, Va./South Lakes) should offer outstanding big-catch potential during his career.

Could see the field in 2008: Mauti and Price (red-zone packages).

Iowa

Signing day storylines: While most Hawkeye fans could still be hurting from the Western Michigan loss, the Iowa coaching staff has been working hard to put together a solid recruiting class to join its young team with a lot of promise heading into next fall. As long as Kirk Ferentz is at the helm, Iowa should continue to bring in good prospects that my lack the ideal measurbales that garner elite status but fit his system well.

With that said, the talent in 2008 does not currently match the top-half quality signed in its No. 24-ranked 2007 class and is more reminiscent of 2006. Linebacker was a key area of need in our opinion with its young depth and the loss of Mike Klinkenborg and Mike Humpal. The Hawkeyes do not appear to have any solid prospects currently pledged or lined up for a commitment on signing day. Offensive line was a weaker position exposed in 2007 and also an area that has not seen much focus in this class.

[+] Enlarge

AP Photo/The News-Gazette, Darrell Hoemann
John Wienke led Tuscola (Ill.) to two straight IHSA Division 1A football championship games.

Top Prospect: With Jake Christensen's struggles at quarterback, Iowa really needed to land a top prospect at this position and did with ESPN's No. 14-rated signal caller John Wienke (Tuscola, Ill.). The former Michigan commit possesses all the physical tools to develop in Iowa's system and should only improve as he refines his mechanics and accuracy. He possesses great size for a pocket passer with a powerful arm to make all the college throws. Needs some development but do not be surprised if this borderline ESPN 150 prospect sees the field early in his career.

Class highlights: Wienke will have an exciting target at receiver in DeMarco Paine (Saint Louis/Hazelwood East), a high-upside prospect with a good blend of deep ball speed and underneath quickness. Protecting Wienke upfront will be James Ferentz (Iowa City, Iowa), son of Kirk and a good player in his own right. ESPN's No. 10-rated center lacks some size to play up front in the Big Ten but is a technician like you would expect and comes off the ball extremely quick.

Secondary coach Phil Parker has to be pleased with the good run support skills and toughness possessed by committed prospects David Cato (Mansfield, Texas/Summit) and sleeper Shaun Prater (Omaha, Neb./Central), attributes that have represented his Iowa defensive backs.

Could see the field in 2008: Wienke.

Billy Tucker is a recruiting coordinator for Scouts Inc. and has close to a decade of coaching experience at the college and high school level. Tucker has served as a recruiting coordinator for two nationally ranked Division II colleges. After a miserable 1-11 first season, Tim Brewster has compiled one of the surprise recruiting classes heading into signing day with good top-half quality and prospects from 11 states outside of Minnesota. Spartans fans can be excited about some of the young athletes Mark Dantonio currently has committed in his first true class at Michigan State, but Northwestern fans will most likely see a recruiting class that finishes near the bottom of the conference recruiting rankings. Look for Under Armour All-American Darius Willis (Indianapolis/Franklin Central) to bolster Indiana's running game and in-state recruiting in 2009. In part two, the final five teams from 2007:
Schools in order of 2007 finish

Purdue

Signing Day Storylines: Very quietly Purdue has established a successful football program under head coach Joe Tiller. The Boilermaker head coach has led his team to bowl games in 10 of his 11 years including a Rose Bowl appearance in 2000. He has a winning record and has done a good job of finding and grooming talented quarterbacks like Drew Brees, Kyle Orton and Curtis Painter. Overall Tiller and his staffs have not been major players on the recruiting trail stringing together top-10 or even top-25 classes, but they have had an eye for talent and fitting their needs.

It looks like this will be Tiller's last true class as he is ready to step down at the end of the 2008 season. Purdue has been consistent but has failed to rise as a serious threat for the Big Ten title and crack the inner circle of dominant teams that Ohio State, Michigan and Penn State have formed.
A former Tiller assistant Danny Hope will take over when Tiller leaves and likely will not change much from a scheme standpoint, but it will be interesting to see if his new blood can bolster Purdue's recruiting and help them rise to Big Ten contention.

Athlete prospect Jerico Nelson gives Purdue coaches plenty of options.

Under Tiller the Boilermakers have been unable to land an ESPN 150 prospect and likely will not by signing day this year either. Purdue has recruited and coached well enough to win in the Tiller era, but the question for Purdue fans is, can Hope elevate Purdue to the next level as a recruiter and coach?

Top Prospect: Purdue's top-rated prospect is an import from SEC country. Jerico Nelson (Destrehan, La.), the nation's No. 21-rated athlete, is a nice pick-up for the Boilermakers. The only real drawback for Purdue here is trying to figure out where to play him. He is a speedy and elusive runner who can be a home-run threat on offense as a running back. He also has very good hands and can be a threat in the passing game. Considering Purdue's spread scheme and need for a consistent playmaker at running back (it ranked 89th in rushing offense in 2007), it is likely Nelson could end up on offense. The problem is the defensive coaches may get jealous and want him on that side of the ball. He has fluid hips and could develop into a very good cover corner. He should also be an asset as a return man. The bottom line is that the Purdue coaches will find a place to play Nelson and his career could include some shifting around and even double duty.

Class Highlights: If Nelson ends up on defense or even as a receiver, Purdue does have another fine running back prospect pledged in Ralph Bolden (Folkston, Ga./Charlton). Bolden is a shifty running back with excellent top-end speed and overall open-field running skills. He needs to add bulk but is fast, tough, difficult to tackle and has big-play flair. His presence could allow Nelson to utilize his abilities on defense.

One of the best pickups for Purdue is actually a kicker. Under Armour All-American Carson Wiggs (Grand Prairie, Texas/South Grand Prairie) could handle placekicking and punting but will likely be a punter at the college level.

The offense is losing two productive receivers as Dorien Bryant was a senior and Selwyn Lymon was dismissed from the team. The Boilermakers have two verbal commitments from prep receivers led by Roy Roundtree (Trotwood, Ohio/Trotwood-Madison) and two junior college transfers; Aaron Valentin (Freeport, N.Y./Erie C.C.) is already signed. The offense is also losing productive tight end Dustin Keller and will add Jordan Brewer (Carmel, Ind.). Like Keller, Brewer as a tight end could be an asset as a big, athletic receiver. The Boilermakers are set to sign a big class this year and will likely find some early contributors in the group.

Could See the Field in 2008: ATH Nelson, P Wiggs, RB Bolden, CB Kevin Green (Tallahassee, Fla./James S. Rickards), JUCO WR Valentin.

Indiana

Signing Day Storylines: For the first time in a long time (14 years to be exact) the Hoosiers get to finish a recruiting class on the heels of a bowl appearance. Despite the unfortunate death of head coach Terry Hoeppner, there is reason to be happy and excited about football in Bloomington, Indiana again. The Hoosiers rode the wave of emotion spurned by the passing of their leader to a bowl game, and while they lost to Oklahoma State, they did end one of the longest bowl droughts among BCS teams. They finished above .500, have a new head coach in Bill Lynch who justifiably had the interim tag removed from him after doing a very nice job in the aftermath of Hoeppner's passing and have some legitimate talent.

Indiana will need to replace the big, productive James Hardy, but players like quarterback Kellen Lewis and defensive end Greg Middleton give hope that 2007 was just not a fluke.

[+] Enlarge

Tom Hauck for ESPN.com
Darius Willis upped his stock with a strong showing at the Under Armour Game.

Top Prospect: The Hoosiers get to boost with Under Armour All-American Darius Willis (Indianapolis/Franklin Central). The Indiana native showed up in Orlando and proved among the better running backs in this class. He is a big back who combines a nice blend of size, speed and power as a runner. He can be tough to tackle and can gain yards after contact. He has good straight-line speed but is not overly elusive or shifty. While there are some drawbacks to Willis' game, he is still growing into his frame and developing. He has good upside and presents a change of pace to what Indiana has now in their stable of backs. The class 5-A first team all-state player rushed for 1,728 yards and 28 touchdowns as a senior and is a fine addition for the Hoosiers' offense.

It is big landing an in-state talent like Willis, and it also seems like Willis is excited to be a Hoosier. Every time a family member of his was spotted around the Disney property, they were decked out in Hoosier gear and Indiana needs that. They need for a well-regarded prospect to commit and show that Indiana can be a possible destination for top prospects, and Willis could start to slowly open the eyes of other recruits.

Class Highlights: The Hoosiers will find it tough to replace the departed Hardy but have made strides to keep the wide receiver position a positive. They will bring back Ray Fisher and Andrew Means and will also bring into the mix highly-graded Tandon Doss (Indianapolis/Ben Davis). Doss is another fine Indiana prospect the Hoosiers were able to keep close to home, and he is an aggressive, speedy player with nice size and good strength. He is tough, fast and can make acrobatic grabs. Hardy was a very good, but Doss could develop into that type of receiving target for Indiana in time. They also added another pair of solid receiver prospects in Tyler Adetona (Gainesville, Ga.) and Marquelo Suel (Fort Wayne, Ind./Harding).

Led by Middleton the Hoosiers finished in the top 10 nationally in sacks and are brining in more pass-rushing help in rangy postgrad prospect Kyle Kozak (Pickerton, Ohio/Hargrave Military).
The Hoosiers struggled some to defend the pass in 2007 and have not done much to address that with the 2008 class. They did dip into Florida though to land safety Peter St. Fort (Naples, Fla./Golden Gate), a potential sleeper in this class among the safeties. In an effort to improve the offensive line Indiana has five verbal commitments from linemen, led by No. 37 ranked guard Justin Pagan (Chicago/Saint Patrick).

Could See the Field in 2008: RB Willis, WR Doss, DE Kozak, S St. Fort (on special teams).

Michigan State

Signing Day Storylines: With one full year under his belt head coach Mark Dantonio is looking to sign his first true class at Michigan State come February 6th. For the first time in a while Michigan State heads into signing day with a little positive momentum. Yes it lost its bowl game to Boston College, but it was a small victory getting to a bowl after a three-year absence.

Also Dantonio was able to avoid yet another late season Michigan State collapse. The Spartans tried hard to fall apart again, losing three straight games in the second half of the season, but Dantonio was able to steer his Spartans to two wins over the final two weeks and into the Champs Sports Bowl.

Much work is still needed in East Lansing, but at least the new coach can sell some shown improvement and continue to preach the Spartans are headed for brighter days. His current class does not compare to in-state rivals Michigan or with Big Ten power Ohio State but does have some positives. There are also some possible late grabs out there if they can catch some breaks. While both are long shots, cornerback Neiko Lipscomb (Tucker, Ga.) and defensive end Nick Perry (Detroit/Mackenzie) give Spartan fans something to keep an eye on. Also underrated linebacker Steve Gardiner (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin-Coffman ) and defensive tackle Dawan Whitner (Cleveland/Glenville) present some possible interesting late additions.

Top Prospect: The top prospect in the Spartans' class is a not only a good addition, but a needed addition. With the graduation of Terry Love, the defection of Devin Thomas to the NFL and Deon Curry entering his senior year, the Spartans can use some help at wide receiver, which was not a strong position to begin with. That help is coming in the form of in-state Fred Smith (Detroit/Southeastern), a big, physical, strong receiver. He is able to combine his size with good speed and could be a matchup problem in the red-zone. He needs to become better at the technique of the position like running better routes and being quicker out of his breaks, but he has the potential to develop into a big-play receiver. The Spartans have had some good receivers come through East Lansing in the past and Smith has the tools to be another good one for the green and white.

Class Highlights: The Spartans have verbal commitments from a trio of talented athlete prospects. All three could play on offense or defense. Charles Burrell (Detroit/Southeastern) and Johnny Adams (Akron, Ohio/Buchtel) could both help fill needs at wide receiver. With some youth needed at safety though, we would not be surprised to see Burrell, a teammate of Smith's, moved there. The third athlete of the group is Glenn Winston (Detroit/Denby), a physical player on defense and a slashing, power running back on offense. All three give the Spartan coaches some good options.

Michigan State had a good ground attack in 2007, but Jehuu Caulcrick was a senior and Javon Ringer is heading into his senior year. The time to start looking for future Spartan backs is now, and they have added one in Caulton Ray (Bloomfield, Mich./Brother Rice). Ray is a thickly-built runner with good vision and balance. The incoming freshman may remind Spartan fans some of their current star running back Ringer.
Again, youth is needed at safety, and while Burrell could be an option, they have also landed top-50 safety Brynden Trawick (Marietta, Ga./Sprayberry). He is a good-sized, physical player who could develop into an outside linebacker.

This Michigan State class is heavy with in-state prospects as 12 commitments hail from Michigan. The Spartans have shown an effort to recruit their own turf hard. Another interesting aspect of this class is no junior college additions. Michigan State has relied on the JUCOs in the past, but Dantonio seems to be taking a bigger picture route with his recruiting and working to build with prep players.

Could See the Field in 2008: WR Smith, athlete prospects Burrell, Adams and Winston.

Northwestern

Signing Day Storylines: Former hard-hitting Northwestern linebacker and current head coach Pat Fitzgerald is still trying to mold the Wildcats and get them back to a bowl game. Despite a six-win season, the Wildcats failed to make a bowl game again in his second year at the helm. With the continued success of programs like Ohio State and Michigan as well as the emergence of programs like Wisconsin, Illinois and even Indiana, the competition in the Big Ten is becoming very tight. The battle for talent is fierce as the Wildcats have to deal with tough academic restrictions and emerging recruiting machine Illinois.

Much like their season, the Wildcats will very likely finish near the bottom in the conference recruiting rankings. That being said, they have gone out and filled some needs and Northwestern fans still have some good talent to root for here down the stretch to national signing day. A physical linebacker in the mold of the Wildcats head coach is still on their radar. Steve Gardiner, an underrated player out of Ohio, is a possibility as is tight end Quentin Williams (Pittsburgh/Central Catholic). The Wildcats will need to really battle Stanford among some other schools but have a good shot as Williams' older brother Nate is on the Northwestern roster.

Top Prospect: A big man tops the list of Northwestern's commits -- and I mean that figuratively and literally. Offensive tackle Neal Deiters (Elmhurst, Ill./York) is listed at 6-foot-9 and close to 350 pounds. Even if he is a little smaller than his listed measurables, that is still one big boy. While at times prospects with his freakish size can be more of a novelty than a legitimate player, Deiters does have some upside and could be an anchor at the right tackle position with some work. In the run game he can clear lanes, and when he gets into a defender he can almost pick them up like a forklift and move them out. He will need to improve as a pass blocker and learn to bend more at the knees and coordinate his massive frame. Deiters may not be a quick fix for an offensive line needing help, but he has promise and could develop into a very nice pickup for the Wildcats.

Class Highlights: The offensive line was an area of concentration and rightfully so. Four of the Wildcats top-five commits are offensive linemen, and this is a good thing. They may not be as glamorous for fans to discuss as quarterbacks or wide receivers, but with a line that featured several seniors in 2007 and ranked 97th in rushing offense and sacks allowed, these additions are good. In addition to big Deiters, they also have verbal commitments from in-state linemen Jeff Radek (Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley), Brian Mulroe (Wilmette, Ill./Loyola Academy) and Nick Adamle (Wheaton, Ill./North). All three may need some work, but they all also play hard and will bring a blue-collar, nasty attitude to Northwestern's offensive trenches. They also have a fourth commitment from a lineman in offensive tackle Chuck Porcelli (Lombard, Ill./Montini). Porcelli at about 6-foot-8 can search with Deiters for suitable clothes and beds to fit in.
Also a position of need, three safety prospects led by Hunter Bates out of Tim Tebow's alma mater Nease in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla. are set to sign.

Could See the Field in 2008: Any of the linemen may be thrust into action; Radek or Mulroe may be the most ready. With help needed in both run and pass defense several defensive prospects may be called on to contribute early.

Minnesota

Signing Day Storylines: Signing day is a big day for Gopher fans. After a miserable 1-11 first season, head coach Tim Brewster gets to unveil his first real class. Lauded for his recruiting abilities, he has worked hard to not disappoint, planting roots in Minnesota and going nationwide looking for talent. Minnesota has landed at least one verbal from prep prospects in 11 states outside of Minnesota, spanning from California to Florida. Brewster and his staff have shown a work-hard attitude recruiting the nation as they try to right the Gopher ship.

While strides were made to assemble a good class, Minnesota did miss out on some of the top in-state prep prospects, and this will be an area that needs to improve moving forward. The Gophers did land five in-state verbal commitments in their current class of 21. A possible addition is Under Armour All-American Keanon Cooper (Dallas/Skyline), an athletic defender who could help a poor Gopher defense.

[+] Enlarge

John Albright/Icon SMI
With a strong stable of young quarterbacks, MarQueis Gray should have time to adapt to the college game.

Top Prospect: For the second straight year it looks like Minnesota's No. 1 prospect will be a quarterback. Last year it was Brewster's son Clint, the No. 8 rated quarterback, and this year it is MarQueis Gray (Indianapolis/Ben Davis), the No. 13 rated signal caller. With freshman Adam Weber taking snaps in 2007, Minnesota must be applying the thought that competition is good and you have never have enough talented quarterbacks.

Gray will make for interesting quarterback battles as he has good tools and size. He is a good athlete but is a pocket passer first. He has solid arm strength and flashes good touch. He is also athletic enough to tuck and run and create when plays break down. He still needs to develop his game and improve his mechanics but has good upside. With Weber and Brewster on campus, Minnesota can likely bring Gray along.

Class Highlights: This will be a big class currently with the 21 prep commits and seven JUCO additions in addition to Notre Dame transfer offensive guard Matt Carufel. Four junior college prospects already signed may be able to help right away, especially on defense.

On the prep front, Jewhan Edwards (Philadelphia/Roman Catholic) heads a pair of defensive tackle pledges ready to help a run defense that ranked 114th. Edwards, a big and explosive interior defender, could be a steal if he can take care of the little things on and off the field. The defense also has a verbal from No. 22-ranked inside linebacker Sam Maresh (Champion Park, Minn.), an in-state product. Maresh physically looks ready to play and could also help a porous run defense.

Two outside linebackers -- Spencer Reeves (Dallas/Skyline), a high school teammate of Gopher target Keanon Cooper and Florida native Gary Tinsley (Jacksonville, Fla./First Coast) -- should help. Tinsley could also be used as a rush end and help the Gophers get pressure on the quarterback after ranking 116th nationally in sacks. Minnesota's defensive woes also spread to coverage as they ranked 115th in pass defense and 116th in pass efficiency defense. With that in mind, it has have targeted secondary help. Another Dallas Skyline addition is the athletic Troy Stoudermire, who could play wide receiver or corner, but his talents may be better used on defense. Another solid corner pick-up is Jonathan Dandridge (Detroit/Highland Park).

On offense, WR Brandon Green (Chicago/Paul Robeson) is a speedy, reliable target with good athleticism.

Could See the Field in 2008: Any of the JUCO additions (especially those already on campus), WR Green, DT Edwards, LB Maresh and several others as there are holes to fill, especially on defense.
