I am counting out the Raptors, and I am on the Celtics bandwagon after today's game. Yes, all because of one game.
Part of the success of the Raptors last year was catching other teams off guard, just like the Hawks started to do last year as well. Oh, we are playing the Raptors, we'll take it easy. This is especially true when teams had to go up to Canada.
Today's game was ugly, but not just because of poor shooting. The plays Toronto ran were terrible for the most part. I think they dissapoint this year, and they will have a tough time winning a 7 game series, unless they get a very favorable matchup in the first round, which will be hard since they won't have a top seed.
Celtics on the other hand are impressive. Posey came up clutch today, and Rondo and Perkins have been pretty solid as well. The rest of the bench needs some work, but there is still time for them to improve.
I think some people are forgetting how good Pierce and Allen are since they have had shitty teams, and Allen was overshadowed by the powerhour Western Conference. Paul Pierce can score at will now that he has players that attract attention away from him. Ray Allen is also doing great now that he is the third(wow) option on the team, so he is getting lots of open looks. Forget about KG, he is going to dominate the East so badly this year, and it is early, but maybe even win the MVP award.
They got a little lazy today, letting the Raptors get back into the game, but even though the Raptors played pretty well at the end of the game, scoring when they needed, the Celtics always were in control. They have 3 guys that are all capable of taking the last shot of the game, and like someone else already said, they can afford to have one, or even 2 of the big 3 have off nights.
It is very early, but the Celtics are for real, and are definitely one of the top teams in the East. Raptors are not at the same level as them/pistons. They may be in the race since the East is looking pretty weak so far, but I think the Bulls and Nets and those guys will start to get it together by the end of the season, because they have been there before. Raptors still have to prove themselves IMO.
