Free agent / off season moves

Jaromir Jagr may follow Mats Sundin's lead and intends on taking his time before deciding what direction his playing future is headed.
Jagr's agent Pat Brisson is talking with a number of teams, including Russian teams eager to sign the NHL superstar.
The Edmonton Oilers, New York Rangers and Pittsburgh Penguins are considered the frontrunners with all three NHL teams expressing interest in signing Jagr.
Interest in Jagr is primarily based on a one year deal that could excede 7 million dollars, however the belief is these teams could be convinced to accept a two year deal if pushed.
The problem with the second year is Jagr's age.
If the 36-year old was to retire, return to Europe, or not fulfill his contract, the NHL team he signs with would take the full cap hit for the remainder of the agreement.
So far, Brisson has been unable to get Jagr to commit and says he has no way of knowing whether a decision is coming tomorrow, next week, or next month.

A day after signing core players Evgeni Malkin and Brooks Orpik to long term deals, the Pittsburgh Penguins took care of their goaltender on Thursday.
Sources tell TSN Marc-Andre Fleury has signed a seven year, $35 million extension.
The deal includes a no-move and limited no-trade clause that triggers in 2010-2011
The no-move prevents the Penguins from placing Fleury on waivers, while the limited no-trade still allows for some flexibility with Fleury controlling the list of teams he would consider in the event Pittsburgh wants to trade him.
Fleury, 23, helped the Penguins win the 2008 Eastern Conference championship and a date with the Detroit Red Wings in the Stanley Cup Final. Fleury was 14-6 with a 1.96 goals-against average, a .933 save percentage and three shutouts during the playoffs.
Fleury was scheduled to become a restricted free agent on July 1, but the Penguins offered him salary arbitration in June to effectively keep hm off the market.
By offering arbitration, the Penguins retained the right to continue negotiating with Fleury in advance of the hearings, slated to take place between July 20 and August 4. The move also prevented other clubs from signing Fleury to a restricted free agent offer sheet and forcing the Penguins to match or accept draft picks as compensation.
Fleury was the number one pick in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft, but struggled early in his career - as many young goalies do. He had a breakout season in 2006-07, posting 40 wins and a 2.83 goals against average to go with a .906 save percentage.
Although his numbers were strong again this season, Fleury struggled with an ankle injury, missing 27 games. He finished the regular season with a 19-10-2 record, four shutouts and a 2.33 goals against average with a .921 save percentage.

The Pittsburgh Penguins have taken quick steps to replace the departed Marian Hossa.

Pittsburgh has verbally agreed to deals with forwards Miroslav Satan and Ruslan Fedotenko.

Both deals are one-year contracts, with Satan earning $3.5 million next year and Fedotenko $2.5 million.

Satan, twice selected to the All-Star game, scored 16 goals and added 25 assists in 80 games last season for the New York Islanders. The native of the Czech Republic has 685 points in 947 career NHL games.

Fedotenko marked 16 goals and 17 assists in just 67 games last season, also for the Islanders. Fedotenko was sidelined for parts of the year with a knee injury.

Markus Naslund is off the available list for free agents, as the Swedish winger has signed a 2-year contract with the New York Rangers.
The unrestricted free agent, who turns 35 on July 30, finished the final campaign of a three-year, $18 million contract with the Vancouver Canucks, where played the last 12 seasons.
Acquired from the Pittsburgh Penguins in 1996, Naslund bloomed into one the Canucks' most celebrated players in franchise history. In 1,035 career NHL games, he has 371 goals and 823 points.
Drafted by the Penguins in 1991, Naslund won the Lester B. Pearson Award as the NHL's most outstanding player - as voted by his peers - in 2002-03 after finishing second in league scoring with 104 points, including 48 goals.
The Rangers also announced the signing of defencemen Dmitri Kalinin to a one-year contract.
The 27-year old played 46 games for the Buffalo Sabres and marked one goal and seven assists. In eight seasons with the Sabres, Kalinin has 145 points in 466 games

After losing Brian Campbell to the Chicago Blackhawks, the San Jose Sharks have added an exprienced face to their blueline.
The Sharks announced Thursday that the team has agreed to a one-year, $5 million contract with 18-year veteran Rob Blake.
"Rob is a tremendous competitor that has been one of the top defensemen in this League for many years," Sharks GM Doug Wilson told the team's official website. "While he has enjoyed mentoring the young guys, great players need the ability to win in order to thrive and his sole purpose here is to focus on winning."
The former Norris Trophy winner should be plenty familiar with the Sharks, having spent the majority of his career with division-rival the Los Angeles Kings.
While Blake is 38-years old, new Sharks coach Todd McLellan doesn't believe that will be a problem.
"Rob's skill set and intangibles speak for themselves."
"I coached Nicklas Lidstrom for the last three years and Rob is the same age as him. Rob, like Nicklas, has proven to be a leader on a championship-winning team and any coach would be lucky to have a player of his caliber."
Sharks forward Joe Thornton, who has teamed with Blake in international competition, believes Blake will fit right in with the team.
"I've gotten to play with Rob at several international tournaments and we've built a friendship over the years," said Thornton. "He'll fit right into our group and more importantly will help us win. He is extremely talented and can play, and excel, in every situation."
In 71 games for the Kings last year, Blake recorded nine goals and 22 assists and was -19. The six-foot-four, 225-pound defenseman was originally selected by Los Angeles in the fourth round of the 1988 NHL Entry Draft.

The Montreal Canadiens added a pair of hometown boys Thursday.
Georges Laraque, a native of Montreal, has signed a three-year contract with the Canadiens, worth $4.5 million. The deal includes a partial no-trade clause.
"A 10-year veteran, Georges is the kind of player who made his mark in the NHL," Habs GM Bob Gainey said in a statement. "With his physical play and determination, we are convinced that he will add valuable energy to our group of players."
Laraque spent last season with the Pittsburgh Penguins, where he tallied 13 points and 141 penalty minutes in 71 games.
Orginally an Edmonton Oilers draft pick in 1995, Laraque has spent time with the Penguins and the Phoenix Coyotes.
Montreal also announced the signing of goaltender Marc Denis to a one-year, two-way contract. Denis was recently bought out by the Tampa Bay Lightning after playing just 10 games in 2007-08.

So the habs got Tanguay and Laraque, both of whom said at one time that they wanted nothing to do with playing in Montreal lol

Sources tell TSN Dan Boyle has waived his no-trade clause and has agreed to a trade to the San Jose Sharks.
The paper work confirming Boyle has consented is being processed right now and once signed by Boyle will clear the way for the Sharks and Lightning to complete the deal.
In return for the 31 year old veteran defenseman, it is believed Tampa will receive a package that will include 23-year old defenseman Matt Carle, a first round draft pick, a prospect and a 4th round pick.
Sources say defenseman Brad Lukowich is also part of the deal going to San Jose.
The Vancouver Canucks and Philadelphia Flyers were the other two teams who made in to Boyle's final three trade options.
Boyle only played 37 games this season after his wrist was cut by a skate in a freak accident, but he put up 25 points on four goals and 21 assists.
He signed a six-year, $40 million extension in February just before the trade deadline.

Boyle, who was part of Tampa Bay's Stanley Cup championship team in 2004, had a career year in 2006-2007 when he scored 20 goals with 43 assists for 63 points.
Carle, struggled in 2007-08 posting two goals and 13 assists in 62 games. In 2006-07, he thrived on the point posting 11 goals and 31 assists.
Carle was drafted by the San Jose Sharks in the 2nd round (47th overall) in 2003.

this lightening team will be a fast and exciting team i think..they could go from bottom dwellers to a more competitive team...i just feel bad for vancouver..they have yet to make a huge response to the free agent market and who knows if morrison is back in van city :( sad to see gillis screwing this one up

The San Jose Sharks acquired standout defenseman Dan Boyle from Tampa Bay on Friday, trading defenseman Matt Carle and top prospect Ty Wishart to the Lightning to acquire their second proven NHL defensive star in two days.
The Sharks, who received journeyman defenseman Brad Lukowich in the deal, also gave up a first-round pick in 2009 and a fourth-round choice in 2010. San Jose then made room for its new defensive talent by trading veteran defenseman Craig Rivet to Buffalo for two second-round draft picks.
San Jose lost defenseman Brian Campbell to Chicago on Tuesday in a lavish free-agent deal, but the Sharks quickly compensated for his departure.
On Thursday, the Sharks signed longtime Los Angeles Kings captain Rob Blake to a one-year, $5 million free-agent contract. With the addition of Boyle, who waived his no-trade clause to join San Jose, the club replaced Campbell’s passing skills with one of the NHL’s top puck-moving defensemen.

Boyle and Blake also have championships on their resume, with Boyle playing a significant role in Tampa Bay’s only Stanley Cup title in 2004.
Boyle and Blake will join Kyle McLaren, Christian Ehrhoff, Marc-Edouard Vlasic and Doug Murray in a defensive rotation that might be the Sharks’ strength next season under rookie coach Todd McLellan.
Boyle missed the first half of last season with a wrist injury from a freak locker-room accident, but returned to score 25 points in 37 games. In February, Boyle signed a six-year, $40 million contract which begins in the upcoming season.
The Lightning’s new ownership group apparently was eager to rid itself of Boyle’s large contract, but San Jose has been well under the salary cap for most of the three seasons since the league instituted a spending limit.
Boyle was one of the NHL’s top defensemen in the 2006-07 season with 20 goals and 43 assists. His offensive acumen provides a solid counterpoint to Blake’s physical play.
Carle had two goals and 13 assists in 62 games last season, frequently getting benched by coach Ron Wilson. Carle won the Hobey Baker Award at Denver University as the NCAA’s top hockey player, but hasn’t yet starred in the NHL.
The deal’s most painful component for the Sharks is the loss of Wishart, a first-round draft pick two years ago. He finished up his fourth season of junior hockey last spring and played five games with the Sharks’ top minor-league affiliate.
Lukowich, a 10-year NHL veteran joining his fifth team, had one goal and six assists during 59 games in his only season with Tampa Bay.

Todd Bertuzzi is coming back to Canada.
The Calgary Flames have announced they have signed the power forward to a one-year, $1.95 million contract.
"Todd is a proven scorer with the ability to play both wings," said Flames GM Darryl Sutter in a statement. "He expressed to us that he wanted to play in Canada and that desire along with signing him to a one year deal was important to our philosophy. He wanted to play on a good team and it fit our money. Additionally, our captain, Jarome Iginla, was a strong supporter of Todd and wanted him on our team."
Bertuzzi signed a two-year contract with the Anaheim Ducks last year, but was recently bought out by the team - once again making him an unrestricted free agent.
The native of Sudbury, Ontario played in just 68 games for the Ducks last season, missing time with a concussion early in the season. Bertuzzi marked 14 goals and 26 assists last season, while also amassing 97 penalty minutes.
Bertuzzi's best season occured in 2002-03, when he scored 46 goals, 51 assists and was named to the First NHL All-Star team. Bertuzzi's career took a downward turn in 2004, when he was suspended indefinitely by the league for deliberately injurying the Avalanche's Steve Moore.
In June 2006, Bertuzzi was traded to the Florida Panthers in a blockbuster package that brought Roberto Luongo back to Vancouver and was engineered by then-Panther GM, and current Flames head coach, Mike Keenan.
However, a herniated disk in his back limited Bertuzzi to just seven games with the Panthers and he was eventually traded to the Detroit Red Wings, where he played just eight more games.

sounds like the canucks are getting rid of another player as Brendan Morrison is most likely going to sign with the Ducks tommorrow.

The Tampa Bay Lightning continued to pile on veteran support on Monday, signing forward Mark Recchi to a one-year, $1.25 million contract that's worth $1.5 million with incentives.
Recchi, 40, split last season between the Atlanta Thrashers and Pittsburgh Penguins. He played in only 19 of the Penguins' 26 games with just two goals and six assists. He has been a healthy scratch in seven of their last eight games before the team place him on waivers in December.
The Thrashers acquired Recchi off the wire, and the Kamloops, B.C. native scored 12 goals and 40 points in 53 games with Atlanta.
Recchi, who has 522 goals and 1,381 points in 1,410 career NHL games, made $1.75 million last season.
The 19-year veteran won a Stanley Cup with the Penguins in 1991, and helped lead the Carolina Hurricanes to their first championship in 2006.
Recchi joins a host of new forwards that the Lightning have signed in the offseason, including former Pittsburgh teammates Ryan Malone, Adam Hall and Gary Roberts along with Radim Vrbata and the re-acquired Vinny Prospal.

Free agent centre Brendan Morrison is off the free agent list, as the B.C. native is set to join the Anaheim Ducks. Terms of the impending contract are not known, but it is expected to be a one- or two-year deal.
Morrison is still rehabbing after undergoing knee surgery on April 7 to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament. It is Morrison's fourth surgery in the past two years. Over the past week, Morrison has turned down offers from nine teams including the Minnesota Wild, Columbus Blue Jackets and Los Angeles Kings.
Last week, Morrison turned down a one-year, $1.9 million offer from the Vancouver Canucks, the team he has spent the past eight seasons with. It appeared that the Canucks were hoping Morrison would be their 'fall-back' position if they are unable to sign Mats Sundin. He wasn't prepared to wait.
The move will reunite Morrison with the former Canucks general managers Brian Burke and Dave Nonis, who both work in Anaheim's front office.
Morrison, 32, scored nine goals and 25 points in 39 games with the Canucks last season and spent most of the campaign on the shelf with wrist and knee injuries. In 674 career games with Vancouver and the New Jersey Devils, he has 159 goals and 474 points. If he can stay healthy, Morrison could be Anaheim's second line centre behind Ryan Getzlaf.

Ray Emery has decided to take his show on the road.
The former Ottawa Senator netminder has agreed to a one-year deal with Atlant Mytishchi of the new Russian Continental Hockey League. The deal is reportedly worth in excess of $2 million plus bonuses.
"Unfortunately, it's only been a short time since the buyout and there isn't anybody willing to give (Emery) a second chance at this time," said Emery's agent J.P. Barry to the Sun Media. "I think if people knew the things that he's done over the last little while to turn the corner, there might be more interest out there.
According to Barry, Emery had hoped to play in the NHL next season, but received just three calls.
"Given his offer from Atlant, in Ray's circumstances, we feel the best thing for him to do is play as the No. 1 goalie with this club. Ray is excited about the opportunity and just wants to go back to focusing on being the best goalie that he can be. He knows there will be a lot of pressure, but he's ready for that and he's looking forward to moving on," Barry added.
Emery joins former New York Ranger Jaromir Jagr, who recently signed a two-year, $14-million contract with Avangard Omsk, as one of the few NHLers to leave North America for Russia.
Emery hopes this detour is just a stopgap until he can resume his career in the NHL. Last season, Emery lost his starting job to Martin Gerber and a series of off-ice antics prompted the Senators to buy out the 25-year old's contract.
"He's a talented goalie who wants to play," said Barry.
Emery ended the season with a 12-13-4 record and an .890 save percentage.
