Coaching/GM Carousel 2013

I would take Lovie over Wiz....I think I would, at this point, take either Gus (first choice) or Lovie....or maybe Arians.

Have to give something up for Alex Smith, think he's still under contract. Probably a 2nd-rounder, I'm guessing?

Theyre not gonna pay him 8.5 million or whatever it is next year when they have Kaepernick

he'll get cut

I haven't followed his story that closely, but you'd think there'd be a couple takers in trade ... maybe not much leverage at that price and only a year left, but should be able to squeeze something. I know the "trade for Alex Smith" stuff was buzzing around here when it looked like Chip Kelly was coming.

Smoke probably on the money regarding Alex Smith's contract and tradability. From ninersnation.com (my first ever visit to ninersnation.com) ...

Alex Smith contract: Trade, Release, Other?

We break down the various options available to the 49ers as they consider their options at the quarterback position.

Although the quarterback debate remains heated here at Niners Nation, Jim Harbaugh appears set to continue forward with Colin Kaepernick as his quarterback for the foreseeable future. The debate will continue to rage, but one question that will potentially need to be answered in the offseason is what to do with Alex Smith. Assuming the team decides to stick with Colin Kaepernick after this season, Alex Smith is a luxury the team likely would not want to keep given the various other contract issues still to be sorted through.
The 49ers re-signed Smith this past March, after working out Peyton Manning. Whether Jim Harbaugh was pursuing Manning, evaluating Manning, or whatever, it showed some inclination to consider alternatives to Smith. Manning eventually signed with the Denver Broncos, and the 49ers worked out a three-year deal with Smith in a way that provided the team with an opportunity to get out of the deal each year.
Some are asking "Why not trade Smith then"? This is a perfectly valid question, but lets go into detail on what his deal looks like. Smith received no signing bonus, but rather a $3 million roster bonus once he signed the contract. Additionally, he received a guaranteed $5 million base salary. He also is eligible for $1.25 Million in "likely to be earned incentives." Those however would only be met if on the roster.
As we look at the 49ers options with Alex Smith, keep in mind that since the trade deadline has already passed, there can be no more trades done until the new league years begins next March. This is tentatively looking like March 12, 2013.
There are 2 key dates to keep in mind: 1) March 12, 2013 (tentatively based on new league year date, and 2) April 1, 2013. The former date is when Alex Smith is due a $1 million roster bonus. The latter date is when his $7.5 million base salary for 2013 becomes fully guaranteed. Whatever the 49ers elect to do, $1 million of that $7.5 million is already guaranteed separate from the base salary and the earlier March roster bonus.
Now comes the fun part: is it worth it to trade him or cut him?
By trading him, the 49ers would have to either negotiate with Smith to push the $1 million roster bonus back, and allow him to choose a team he would like to go to, or the 49ers would need to take the $1 million roster bonus, pay it, then wait until before April 1[SUP]st[/SUP] to trade him. The 49ers could trade him after the April 1[SUP]st[/SUP] date, but the base salary will be fully guaranteed at that point.
What likely makes the most sense is to cut Smith before the $1 million roster bonus is due. By doing that, the 49ers are only on the hook for the $1 million of his $7.75 million base salary that is guaranteed. The question is basically, is it worth a shot at getting a deal done after league year begins, or to eventually find out there is not a sufficient trade market for Smith, and be stuck releasing him before April 1, and pay him $2 million in dead money.
Below is a chart of what would be saved vs. dead money for both cutting Smith and trading Smith.

Still would be kind of amazing to see a QB with that record of success the last couple seasons just cut.

[h=1]The Latest On Bradley And the Coaching Search[/h] Posted by Tim McManus on January 15, 2013 at 12:48 pm | 0 Comments

It is still very much a possibility that Gus Bradley will become the next head coach of the Eagles. But we are not there yet.
ad_choices_i_UR.png

Bradley will be in Philadelphia this afternoon for his second interview, which is being described by a league source as a continuation of the first interview back in Atlanta. That sit-down between Jeffrey Lurie, Howie Roseman, Don Smolenski and Bradley was shorter than they would have liked, given that it was awkwardly scheduled the day before Seattle’s divisional playoff game against the Falcons.
The Seahawks are now out of the postseason running and Bradley is available. He is expected to meet with the Jaguars on Wednesday, though that can always be cancelled if the meeting with the Eagles turns serious.
There have been several reports flying around suggesting that it is a done deal between Bradley and the Eagles, but several sources have shot down that notion. One league source said that agents of other potential candidates have not been told that the race is over, and at least one still believes there is open competition.
The Eagles met with Jay Gruden and Ken Whisenhunt on Monday. Whisenhunt made a strong case for himself by focusing on his accomplishments, which includes a Super Bowl win as offensive coordinator of the Steelers and Super Bowl appearance as head coach of the Cardinals in less than ideal circumstances. He is now considered ahead of Brian Billick in terms of desirable candidates.
Bruce Arians, meanwhile, is no longer part of the equation. There was a report that the Colts offensive coordinator would interview with the Eagles Tuesday, but the team came out Monday night and said nothing was scheduled. Moments later, the second interview with Bradley was announced for that day. Arians is now considered “off the radar.”
Bradley is very much on it. It might not be a stretch to call him the front-runner, but he’s not at the finish line quite yet.

Theyre not gonna pay him 8.5 million or whatever it is next year when they have Kaepernick

he'll get cut

ye, Kaep was always the goal to get him ready; they traded up to get kaep, smith wasn't a Harbaugh guy either

If it's Bradley, I'm OK with it actually.

It then opens up for a Wiz to OC position like Smoke suggests. It's hard to see Lovie taking a DC job under someone like Bradley, though if he did you'd know he checked his ego at the door. Lovie obviously has more experience as the guy, at both levels, so that would be a tough pill to swallow. But the Wiz thing would/could make sense.

Because this has become a de facto Eagles thread (as every thread not about the Browns should become, really). It's clearance time at the Eagles store. Odd thing here is, no branded paper bags for 2012.

#MissedOpportunities

I'm excited to see Smoke finally get his Eagles Ugg boots though. He's wanted those for a long time.

^ Some good items in there.

Could see Smoke rocking this on a lazy Sunday morning ...

so as long as you get former head coaches that have been in superbowls as coordinators ya'll be cool with it......the realistic expectation bus never stalls in philly

Smoke + Eagles' "Forever Lazy" PJs + Weed from Gorgolon = How Smoke rolls.

the realistic expectation bus never stalls in philly

It only took you how many years to understand this, Jump?

World peace > The Birds > God > Country > Family > Food, clothing, shelter.

It's a pretty simple food chain, really.

That has to be the oldest footie pajama model I've ever seen. Guy looks like he should be changing out your brake pads, not sitting down to a bowl of Frosted Flakes.

Honestly, the only reason Silver Linings Playbook was nominated for Best Picture was because it was about The Birds.

And the reason it won't win Best Picture is because role for The Birds wasn't big enough. Poor choice by the director there will cost him the Oscar.

Apparently the leading candidate for DC if Bradley gets the job is the Florida DC Dan Quinn

Dont see a Super Bowl ring on his resume though, so thats unacceptable

I feel like the Billick meltdown among the fans might border on epic.

And I love the Birds, but they can keep their hands off Florida coaches, thanks. Let's leave that crew in tact for a few years.

I'm willing to roll the dice on this Bradley character, need a solid OC, though.

what is so special about gus bradley?
an asst coach on a team with a winning record this yr.. w o w

wade - you obviously never saw this:

<iframe width="640" height="360" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/3cbpsrN52_o" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

(seriously though...thats pretty much the only reason anyone wants him....well that and his name isnt Wisenhunt, Lovie or Billick...)

I think lovie being a head coach in this league are gone. What answer does he give when questioned about developing an offense. He will make for one helluva def coordinator next year is my best guess.

Bears fans time to start reading up on canadian football - Trestman seems to be the front runner. The guy did wonders with Ganon - and Steve Young has nothing but praises for him so it cant be all that bad.

Well, that video makes me want Bradley less, actually.

Ugh, whatever. I admit I know very little about any of the OC/DC candidates left. I just hope the Birds pick the right guy.

wade, to a degree youre "cause he yells" answer is correct. obviously its not just that, but for the past 2 years weve seen the inmates pretty much take over the prison, there has been no order.

no thats not the only thing to like about the guy, if it was hed be another mike singletary (he yelled a lot and got nothing), but at least with gus we know if DRC takes a play off, hell be dealt with. If Desean begs for a flag while the ball is still in the air, that won't be ok. Saying its because he yells is obviously a condescending way of putting it, but yeah, the fact that hes hard nosed and wont put up with the bullshit that has gone on is a big part of his appeal.

Bascially the last 2 years with Andy was like, remember in elementary school when u found out u had a substitute teacher that day, so u knew u didnt have to bring ur A game and u could kinda do w/e you wanted? It was like that.

So true. So very true. And so many people refused to see it.

I have been catching up on this thread.. dwoww I am on your side regards to foles.. give the guy a shot. He played thru an injury in that wash game, showed some toughness. No idea why he is getting hammered with hate lol.

because nowadays if a rookie qb isnt instantly an MVP candidate he sucks

Yeah I guess
I mean foles can make all the throws. Not exactly mobile but seems to have a feel of how to move in the pocket.

I feel like you can teach most QBs footwork unless you're Derek Anderson. Brady worked on it tirelessly early in his career.

Disagree..
I think u either born with a feel for the pocket or not..
Ex- Russell Wilson, no one taught him that.

Pocket feel is different than footwork.

Some guys will never be able to feel pressure. These guys are easy to spot and their careers are almost always short lived because they just get pounded on.

But the ability to move your feet quicker and to get your timing right on your drops and the way you move in a pocket, that is something I think you can teach. Or at least improve on. It's what almost every QB who comes out now pays some camp/teacher for before the combines and workouts. Speed up the drop, when to transfer your weight, etc.

But, yeah, if you can't feel pressure innately, you're going to have a tough time being a QB. And by tough I mean painful.

This is my most alarming suspicion about Weeden going forward. The eyes in the back of his head don't work.

Ok Joe. Just replying to what u replied to me.. I never state "footwork"
In my above posts so assumed u thought of them as the same

As pissed of as I was from betting atl -3! I had to.admire Wilson esp on that play he avoided blitz n hit Lynch in flat to the 3..
can't teach that shit

No worries, Wade. I wasn't trying to be snippy, just to clarify more what I meant.

I also agree with you guys on Weeden. I worry he doesn't have good pocket awareness.

One thing I like about him though, is that he seems to be fearless with his throws. If the thinks it's the right throw to make, even if it's a bad decision, he fires it to the spot. Not a lot of indecision with the guy.

well Gus is on a plane to Jacksonville. Say goodbye to that dream. I'm really thinking these coaches are comingin and seeing how Lurie and Roseman run things and running for the hills.

Trestman in as Bears HC, and immediately hired NO Aaron Kromer as OC. Got my fingers crossed and hope they can get the offense into the 20th century. Also, hoping the defense won't suffer to much.
