Canadian Hockey Team Appreciation Thread

Pretty much a regular
So in 2010 our biggest rivals the Russians lose to us 7-3 and their goalie says

" They came like gorillas coming out of a cage.
"

and now this year's team is arguably better...

will be interesting to see how Stamkos does this saturday

if he can't go I wonder which 14th forward who would be a 1st liner on every other team we go with?

St. Louis. Pretty much a no brainer imo, since he was oddly left off the team in the first place.

Yeah I was gonna say I think Giroux is the guy, Marty is old and G is one of the best there is when he's playing like he's playing right now.

But how is this Canada team better than 2010? 4th best goaltending in the tournament and a lot of forwards that don't forecheck. Sounds like wishful thinking more than anything.

And let's not forget it's not home ice this time, my little homers.....

At work so I will list all the reasons why team is better later

But in terms of stamps

Guessing it's down to Marty, giroux, Carter

I'd go Marty or g

Easily, mostly it's just because 2010 was a young team

The Defense in 2010 was

Neidermayer/Pronger
Keith/Seabrook
Doughty/Weber

2014 will be something like

Keith/Doughty
Hamhuis/Weber
Bouwmeester/Petro

the reigning Norris trophy winner will be our 7th or 8th d man plus PP specialist in PK Subban

if you were making a list of the top 4 d men in the league Doughty/Weber/Keith are there in some order with Chara

so from 2010 we really only lost Neidermayer

Pronger was too slow for IIHF rules (more speed, less physical), Seabrook has been shown to mostly be a product of playing with DK

we added in Petro, and Weber/Doughty are both in their prime now, whereas in 2010 they were 25 and 21 respectively

In net we bring back the Gold medal defending goalie, 5on5 sv% is the best statistic in which to measure a goalie

the last 3 years http://www.cappingthegame.com/forum...Hockey-teams&p=1980729&viewfull=1#post1980729

Lundqvist is 2 and Luongo is 4

Rask (Finland) is 7th

Miller and Quick are 15/16

so I don't think anyone has a huge advantage over anyone else, even though if I had to choose them in order I would go

Henrik
Luongo
Rask
Hiller
Bobrovsky
Miller
Halak
Pavalec
Miller

up front we have lost

Iginla, Heatley, Thornton, Morrow, Richards, Staal

and replaced with

Tavares, Duchesne, Benn, Sharp, Kunitz + whomever replace Stamkos

and the core of

Crosby/Toews/Getzlaf/Perry/Bergeron/Nash were all under 25 in 2010 and again are in their prime now

outside of anytime when Gretz and Mario were on the same team Canada has never been deeper down the middle with

Crosby
Tavares
Toews
Getzlaf

I heard it was down to Marty, Giroux, Neal, or E. Staal. I'd go Marty or Giroux also...I said above I would take St. Louis no doubt because he was snubbed, but I honestly forgot Giroux didn't make it either. I still think it's gonna be St. Louis though. They should name who it is tonight or tomorrow you would think right?

You listed Miller twice. Where do you really rate him? I would hope it's not 9th on this list. I'm not really even a Miller fan and can't wait for Buffalo to trade him, but he's better than a few guys on this list.

6th

him and Hiller had me confused and I restarted list forgot to remove him 9th

I think 2-6 are pretty close if it was tiered I would have it as something like

1st Henrik
2nd Luongo/Rask
3rd Hiller/Bob/Miller

bit of a gap to 4th

4th Halak/Pav

but in a period of over 5 or 6 games, any guy in that group of NHL goalies at the tournament starting for their team, could outplay all the others (except maybe Pavalec) and make it a strength for their team

goalie play can be volatile over an entire season, let alone 2 weeks

I'm just surprised that it's still up in the air whether Quick or Miller will start for the US. Again, not much of a Miller fan even as a Sabres fan, but I'm pretty sure Miller should be the starter over Quick all day long. Based on what he did in the last Olympics alone, Miller should be the starter, although that's not how it works and I really don't even have a problem with that (the spot being his because he played so well 4 years ago).

Miller has been phenomenal this year for Buffalo...yes they are horrible as a team but he has single-handedly had them in most games this year, and is the main reason they have won the games they've won. Buffalo's problem is they can't score goals consistently, but Miller should be commended for what he's done with this team this year (still can't wait until he's out of town and traded away though).

ya I would start Miller in a heartbeat and I am not as big a fan of him as I know a lot of really smart hockey people are

he's the only reason Buffalo isn't allowing 5 goals a game

Quick had that unreal cup run, but if you take that away and just look at say the regular season the last few years, I don't think Quick even makes the team

Yep. It was actually up in the air as to whether Quick would even make the team...now he's possibly going to start over Miller?

As far as Miller goes, I don't like him mostly because he's a douche. He constantly throws his teammates under the bus and doesn't take criticism well at all. He just has this attitude about him when you hear him in interviews, and he's not someone you want around a team that's rebuilding imo. He's been great at times, but he's always liable to let in that soft goal, and does it way too often for most people's liking. We've always been spoiled here in Buffalo with some top notch goaltending, and Miller's pretty good...I'm just not sure he's that "elite" goalie in the NHL that most of the nut-hangers in Buffalo think he is. After having Hasek here for years, it's likely no one will ever live up to him...he was the best I've ever seen by a mile.

Here's Miller vs Quick this year...it really shouldn't even be a question as to who starts for the US.

Miller has faced nearly twice the amount of shots in only 7 more games...how is that even possible?!?!? In 7 more games, Miller has seen 600 more shots!! That's simply incredible. Put another way, he faces 12 more shots per game than Quick.

You wanted to give him away for the Flyers 3rd line center last summer and now he's second best in the world. That's rich.

ya lets not consider contracts, cap etc.

plus the fact we had Schnieder

either way its worked out

kept the better goalie

and Horvat will be captain of team Canada 2018

I think other countries may do the same, each team has a back to back in its first 3 games, either 1/2 or 2/3

Lareux teeed wants Miller to start because he doesn't want to have to face Quick. Don't believe him that he actually thinks Miller is better

lol. Miller is better than Quick though. You think Quick is better than Miller too, or just saying teed really thinks Quick is better?

I think Quicks best is better than Miller at this point, but I think they're both good and I'd take either in a heartbeat over ol Glove Hand Bobby Lu in a big tournament

I mean if Putin has already spent $50 billion on this shit, a couple million to players and refs seems like pocket change

these refs are I think half NHL/half European, they are professionals, and the highest rated/most talked about event here will be the Gold medal game

if the tinfoil hats are right and Putin wants to fix an event to win gold, its not this one

The canadians in this thread care more about this than the actual canadian players

The motivation isn't even close to the level that is was 4 years ago. The players will treat this like a 2 week vacation, and the play on the rink will reflect that.

no gold this year

I can see what Braves is saying... I just dont think with this lineup that we will see another Torino, lots more youth and gusto

I was actually just trolling :)

But I do think it will be hard to capture what they had four years ago the home crowd is huge in these things

Canadians suffocated the Americans....Americans had no room to skate....1-0 could have been much worse if it wasn't for bad finishing on the Canucks part and good goaltending by Quick...on to the Gold Medal Game vs the Swedes

Now that we're bounced, go Canada. What do I care about Swedes?
