Brand done for the year...

So much for whether the 76ers will be able to adjust to Elton Brand.

According to Comcast SportsNet's Dei Lynam, Brand is scheduled undergo season-ending surgery Monday on the shoulder he dislocated Dec. 17 against Milwaukee. The team’s prized free-agent signee returned Jan. 24 against New York but clearly has not been 100 percent. He averaged just 5.7 points, 4.7 rebounds and 18 minutes off the bench in the six contests since returning from a 16-game absence.

In Tuesday’s loss to Boston, Brand sat out the second half. He failed to score, going 0-for-2 from the field, and had three rebounds in eight first-half minutes. Brand’s shoulder stiffened prior to the contest, and he used a spandex shirt under his jersey that was supposed to provide extra support.

In Saturday night’s collapse to the Nets, Brand went 1-for-7 from the field in the fourth quarter and 2-for-10 overall.

The Sixers knew Brand had not been feeling himself even though he was given medical clearance.

“He is not 100 percent with the shoulder,” general manager Ed Stefanski said prior to Tuesday’s game.

The standout power forward underwent an MRI on Wednesday that reportedly came back clean.

“It was a natural process,” coach Tony DiLeo said. “There has been no setback. It’s just the healing process.”

Brand then met with Dr. Craig Morgan in Wilmington, Del., on Thursday morning.

This is the second straight major injury for Brand, who missed the majority of the 2007-08 season with a torn Achilles. But the Sixers were confident he would be able to regain full strength this season and signed the former All-Star to a five-year deal worth approximately $80 million this offseason.

Brand’s maiden season in Philadelphia ends in a disappointing fashion after just 29 games. He averaged 13.8 points and 8.8 rebounds, significantly down from his career averages of 20.0 points and 10.1 rebounds.

This is the second straight major injury for Brand, who missed the majority of the 2007-08 season with a torn Achilles.

(more coming ... )

eh...short run theyll be ok...they play better without him...anything that gets maurice speights more playing time is a good thing...hes a beast

trouble is now (if they were exploring it before) hes untradeable and he has this huge contract and going into next year you still dont really know how he fits in with this team...

he also might now be injury prone...

pretty much an awful signing at this point...stefanskis gonna get slaughtered for this one in the next few days

That franchise hasn't been able to catch much of a break in about 20 years.

Sorry, Smoke.

agreed, JP.

but before this year you would have said the same thing for the phills, and look what they accomplished. so you never know

smoke things could be worse bro- you could be a wizards/nat's/o's fan:whip:

You're right, Cap. But you look at the Sixers since trading Barkley (1992), and they've basically had two good things happen to them. Drafting of Iverson, drafting of Iggy. That's tough to endure as a fan.

I also agree that their GM will get hit for this one, but it's like the Browns signing LeCharles Bentley only to see him go down on the first play of traning camp and never see a down for them. That's just bad luck, not necessarily a bad deal.

whats the word on speights? he's a stud no doubt but didn't get consistent minutes even when brand was out for a month, are the 6ers committed to developing him or are they just gonna go with smallball to surround dalembert?

Speights is playing very well this year and will prob get some minutes but most of the time will go to Evans....I have been to 15 games this year (16 after tonight) and everytime I see Evans he impresses me.He had 10 boards against Boston and he can run with the Sixers unlike Brand who could not. I think that they will be alright

All they need to do is get the 4th seed and they dont have to worry about playing Boston, Cleveland, Orlando in the first round and we can go from there

And a Gator........................:tiphat:
Damn, if Philly would've signed the PF from ATL (J. Smith) instead of Brand they would've been able to keep running (like the end of last year and playoffs) which is what everyone on their squad (except Brand) is "made for".

agreed J Smith was the right guy to sign

trouble was that he was a restricted FA and Atlanta almost certainly would have matched any offer

i still say if they woulda known how studly Speights was they would never have signed Brand...

Think it was a bad deal and he deserves heat. Just a simple rule. Never sign anyone who has not shown he is durable. See Chris Webber. Agree it will probably help the team this year. GL

Exactly

you gotta love the espn.com poll question

will the sixers make the playoffs this year without Elton Brand?

28% yes
72% no

first of all, its the eastern conference...

second of all, theyve been pretty much without him for 2 months now...

thirdly, they play better without him!

It is clearly obvious the Sixers play at a much higher level without Brand, so him not being on the court ain't really the problem, it's the fact that we signed his ass and are now pretty much stuck with his ugly contract...

Brand shoulda stayed in Clipjoint

karma....

they sign Diddy thinkin they had Brand to pair with and Brand up and leaves for Philly

look at it this way...after this year...its only 3 more years until he becomes the valuable trade commodity known as "Elton Brand's Expiring Contract"

i doubt it has any effect on any of their lines or totals...

he really hasnt been playing any sort of major role since the initial injury

Fourth, the type of people who vote in ESPN polls do not know any of the above.

Something about this whole thing just feels fishy to me...Either way this acquisition is well on its way to being a complete bust
