So much for whether the 76ers will be able to adjust to Elton Brand.
According to Comcast SportsNet's Dei Lynam, Brand is scheduled undergo season-ending surgery Monday on the shoulder he dislocated Dec. 17 against Milwaukee. The team’s prized free-agent signee returned Jan. 24 against New York but clearly has not been 100 percent. He averaged just 5.7 points, 4.7 rebounds and 18 minutes off the bench in the six contests since returning from a 16-game absence.
In Tuesday’s loss to Boston, Brand sat out the second half. He failed to score, going 0-for-2 from the field, and had three rebounds in eight first-half minutes. Brand’s shoulder stiffened prior to the contest, and he used a spandex shirt under his jersey that was supposed to provide extra support.
In Saturday night’s collapse to the Nets, Brand went 1-for-7 from the field in the fourth quarter and 2-for-10 overall.
The Sixers knew Brand had not been feeling himself even though he was given medical clearance.
“He is not 100 percent with the shoulder,” general manager Ed Stefanski said prior to Tuesday’s game.
The standout power forward underwent an MRI on Wednesday that reportedly came back clean.
“It was a natural process,” coach Tony DiLeo said. “There has been no setback. It’s just the healing process.”
Brand then met with Dr. Craig Morgan in Wilmington, Del., on Thursday morning.
This is the second straight major injury for Brand, who missed the majority of the 2007-08 season with a torn Achilles. But the Sixers were confident he would be able to regain full strength this season and signed the former All-Star to a five-year deal worth approximately $80 million this offseason.
Brand’s maiden season in Philadelphia ends in a disappointing fashion after just 29 games. He averaged 13.8 points and 8.8 rebounds, significantly down from his career averages of 20.0 points and 10.1 rebounds.
