2023 Texas Rangers - Entire Season

Pretty much a regular
the 2023 season officially started this afternoon as we announced an old fart as our new manager
Bruce Bochy did the dog & pony show & CY read the script as why Bruce is the right person to lead our franchise to the “promised land”




we are in the midst of 6 consecutive losing seasons & our starting pitching SUCKS
Martin Perez’s negotiations are stalled & he’s now 30% to comeback to our team


if/when we sign anyone I’ll add to this thread



Carlos Rodón, Chris Bassitt & Edwin Díaz are all on our “must have” list
 
Here's what I'm telling myself:

They need an experienced skipper because they're going to get a bunch of talent over the winter and they need someone to get them gelled quickly so they're ready for the playoffs this time next year!

unless we sign minimum 2 quality starters & bring back Marty then the playoffs are a long long long way off…
 
we have extended Martín Pérez a one year
$19.65 million qualifying offer on Thursday
the deadline to accept the offer is Tuesday at 3 p.m. CT




we’ve also made a few interesting moves


traded Nick Solak to the Reds for cash considerations

we have acquired Jake Odorizzi from the Braves for cash considerations and Kolby Allard
Odorizzi went 6-6 with a 4.40 ERA in 2022
they hope he will be the # 4 starter next year

can’t believe it but we exercised the $6 million dollar option with Jose Leclerc for 2023 he has a $6.25 million option for 2024


as expected we declined Kole Calhoun’s $5.5 million dollar option and he becomes a free agent
 
Martín Pérez has accepted the qualifying offer and will return to the club in 2023
I fully expect a 3 year contract will be worked out before christmas
 
we signed our pitching coach on wednesday
I’m not a fan of his at all, but Mike Maddux is the choice

he was with us when Ron Washington was our manager (2009-2015)
he’s been with the cards for the last five seasons


we also signed Dayton Moore as our senior baseball advisor

Trepidation is the word I'll use. I foresee flashes of unhittable brilliance, followed by extended stints on the IR, followed by a ballooned era--all before the all-star break ;)

exactly, we could get 6-8 great starts then season ending surgery

my only hope now would be if we try and get rid of Semien’s awful deal somehow someway
 
Andrew Heaney is on his way to Globe Life
we have given him a two year deal worth $25 million with a opt out after the 2023 season
many incentives that could earn him another $15 million


he pitched only 72.2 innings in 2022
but if he stays healthy would be a very nice #3 starter

looks much better than last year but is loaded with MANY ????marks

can deGrom,Gray and Heaney stay healthy

Martin Perez had his best year by far will he bounce this year????
Our bullpen is below average
our offense gets plenty of praise, but they finished 19th in OPS last season and didn’t add anyone

a ton of question marks with this team
we could win 85-88 games or we could win 70-73

SS: Corey Seager had way too many errors and his batting avg was only .245
he did hit a career high 33 HR’s




3B: Josh Jung
unlike others I don’t think highly of him at all
I see him back in the minors by Memorial Day
Josh Smith is a solid 3B but his bat is a huge liability

we have a huge question mark as who will be our everyday left fielder

Miller had a injury plagued 2022
Josh has all star defensive skills at many positions, his problem is his bat
to stay with the team he needs to hit at least .245
I hope he can do it




My 2023 Outlook:
our over/under is set at 82.5 wins
my gut feeling is a big bet on the UNDER
due to our starters with so many question marks
our pen is subpar & we have ? marks at 3B & LF
our offense was 19th in OPS last season and we didn’t add anyone of significance to improve it


I’m saying we will have many key injuries and our record will be 74-88 or worse
I truly would like to be wrong but I wouldn’t ever consider buying any playoff tickets

Mentioned this last year several times, I think you should expect a monster year from Seager. I bet the home runs remain around 30 and he hits .300 or above. The 1st year when you get the bag for a new team is so difficult, moving your family, getting used to new environment/routine, pressure of wanting to show why you got the bag. So many things work against guys their 1st season on a new team expected to be the man. We saw it with Goldsmidt who was consistently fantastic his whole career in zona. We got flashes of that guy but he was very steaky/inconsistent, a shell of his career in zona. Now he coming off a MVP season!! If goldy can struggle with it anyone can. Seager primed to have a incredible year imo. The average will skyrocket back up, not just because of settling in w his new home but the dismantling of the shift is gonna enhance a lot of guys averages imo. I think he will be in the top 7-8 of mvp voting.

Giving degrom the money and years a super risky proposition. Guys injury history well documented and he wasn’t the same dominant guy when he did pitch last year. I hope it turns out to be a home run signing for ya’ll but it feels like a coin flip at best that it works out. The fact Mets looked at a 40something JV as a upgrade has to be worrisome! Obviously the years/money had something to do with it but it was mostly the fact they couldn’t trust degrom, if they could they wouldn’t have let him out the door,

I think Perez will give basically the same type of effort. I’m a fan of Jon Grey and Heaney but again health a huge concern w him, handing out big money to so many pitchers with questionable injury history is scary! If they forced to rely on Oddrizzi for innings that a problem imo, coming back to AL feels like he could get blown up in a lot of starts, hopefully he not needed for more than 10-15 full in spot starts!

That pen is not a who’s who of guys that strike fear, teams are not gonna feel out of games trailing late!

Even if everything breaks right I can’t see them being better than 3rd in the west, Astros the obvious favs but I think this is Seattle’s time! Luckily there still the angels and A’s to pick on. Dunno what halo’s have done but I assume their pitching still stinks as it always does!! Oakland won’t stay down long then rangers back to bottom feeders if these pitching contracts don’t work out. I mean at least they appear to be trying, lot of franchises would kill for that!
 
83.5 a pretty massive jump from the 63 or so posted last year. They did clear the 63.5 by winning 68 games. Can they really add 16 more wins? If the rotation healthy no doubt, seems like a really big gamble tho. Don’t see how ya play anything other than under.

Oakland season win total is 59.5.
Ive asked my bay area A’s friends and they think that number is spot on. That’s how bad its gotten in Oakland.
 
in a surprising move we traded Mark Mathias to the Pirates we got back Ricky DeVito a 8th round pick in the 2019 draft

Mathias for some unknown reason wasn’t treated right by CY and his minions
they love Robbie Grossman
I thought CY and his crew would be more objective but they are the same old same old

I’m really happy this will be my final year

can Jake give us 170+ innings
will Heaney,Gray & Eovaldi give us 100+ innings

our pen is at best sub par
we have no stud closer just a group of average Joes

I’m still sold on us winning between 72-76 games
I really hope to be wrong but I’ve got to look at reality 4 of our 5 starters could all be on the DL before the first of May…

Jake will be our 14th DIFFERENT opening day starter since 2010
Kevin Millwood was our last consecutive opening day starter 2006-2009

Jake has not pitched a full mlb season since 2019
he’s on a pitch count of 70, so look for Hearn in the 4th or 5th inning

I can count the number of times we've been on SNB in the last decade on one hand...now we're on the season debut. Going for a series sweep, no less. Going to be a lotta smoke blown up our asses, negating our 'nobody believes in us' card.

We're shaping up to be the flavor of April and downhill from there.

Should be a heck of a offensive series the way both swinging the bats and back the rotation starters. Smacking Nola and wheeler around was super impressive to me.

Josh Smith fortunately has no concussion or broken bones in his face
he did get 6 stitches, will be evaluated tomorrow and then a decision will be made if he needs to go on the DL


Jake takes to the hill tomorrow afternoon to try and avoid getting swept
Will be interesting to see if he rebounds from his opening day ass beating
 
we had a 2-0 lead Orioles rallied to tie it up then Josh Jung hit a two run HR we went on to win 5-2 our record is now 4-2

it was a vast improvement from start #1 and very surprised he was allowed to throw 92 pitches

We’ve scored 7 runs over our last 4 games and we’ve been shutout in 2 of these 4 games

Heaney (W 1-1) went 5.0 innings threw 93 pitches gave up 2 hits 1 run which was not earned walked 2 struck out 10
He did record nine consecutive strikeouts from the first to fourth innings
By doing this he passed Nolan Ryan in the Rangers’ record books for most consecutive strikeouts in a single game Ryan had seven on July 7, 1991 vs. the California Angels

Dunning threw 2 scoreless innings

Burke threw 2 innings and gave up 1 run



Garcia went 1-5 drove in 4
his only hit was a big one, his 2nd HR of the season a grand slam

Seager went 3-4 drove in 2
he hit his 1st HR of the year a solo shot

Jankowski went 2-3 drove in 2

Heim went 2-3 drove in 1
he hit his 1st HR a solo shot

Bubba Thompson went 1-4 drove in 1

Lowe 1-3 drove in 1


we struck out 6 times, went 5-11 with RISP and left 5 on base
while it was a nice win the Royals are an awful team and these are teams we must beat to have a decent season


Jake gets the ball tonight, IF he’s the Jake of the past this is the team he could no hit

Our first walk off win off the season, final score 8-5 bringing our record to 7-4
We wasted a good start by Jake costing him a W but bottom line is the team won a game that last year we’d have lost

Corey Seager left the game in the 5th with a left hamstring issue & I’m 95% sure he’s heading to the DL
Luckily we have Josh Smith who plays SS exceptional



Jake threw 98 pitches over 7 innings
he gave up 7 hits 2 runs both were earned
walked none and struck out 9

Hernandez & W Smith each gave up 1 run

Leclerc blew the save for the first time this season

Ragans (W 2-0) pitched 0.2 and got the win he didn’t allow any hits



Jonah Heim went 1-5 but his only hit was a walk off 3 run HR
it was his second HR of the season

Eovaldi takes to the hill tonight to go for the sweep
We’re off tomorrow then we head to Houston for a weekend series

It’s nice to be 7-4 but we’ve achieved this record by beating a lot of bad teams
Let’s see what happens when we play the Astros,Yankees this week and the end of the month
 
Whelp it’s now offical Seager is heading to the DL for minimum 4 weeks
We will be lucky if we see him back the All Star game

It’s now time to see Josh Smith do his thing & Ezequiel Duran

That sucks. I’d ask what happened but I’m sure I can read back a little and find it? If so no need to repeat yourself.
