2013 Nba offseason news and notes

ESPN NBA - Free-agent C Andrew Bynum (missed last season with knee injury) has decided to sign with Cavaliers - Broussard

I like how he worded that. Bynum has decided "to sign with" as opposed to has decided "to play for" since we all know he isn't really going to play in any NBA games.

Iggy to the Bay in a 3 teamer. Bay gives up Jefferson,Biedrins,Rush, 2014/2017 1st rd, 2016/2017 2nd rd to the Jazz and 2018 2nd rd to Nuggz. Am I crazy or does that seem like a shit load for Iggy?

Iggy is one of the best defenders in the league. He just needs do be more aggressive and he needs to pushed hard by the Mark Jackson

5 picks, 2 first rounders?

even if they are world beaters and the first rounders are low, they got destroyed in this trade, and one of the first rounders (if not both) could be high picks depending on injuries, etc

yeah , I like the trade as well. a lineup of klay, curry, iggy, lee, and bogut is right up there with some of the best starting 5 in the league, and you have harrison off the bench. assuming they stay healthy ( which is a big if) I like this team...Bench a little thin, but this is a young team and come playoff time the rotations start to thin out

well. depends.

here is a interesting article from 2009 posted in a recent grantland article about the pelicans that may say its worth the risk (if you feel youre going to be a competitive team for years to come)

really dont think the jazz did themselves many favors. chances are you dont land a big time free agent and even with a talented 2014 draft, who are you gonna get? some 1st round pick in the 20s? basically have to tank yourself and hope your own pick is a a star.

Who is this guy? Anyone have any knowledge?

Gigi Datome is a 6'9 SF who just won the MVP in the italian league... he's a late bloomer even if is only 25, hes been good for years , played very good internationally at the junior level with the national team but this has definitely been his breakout season, dragging his team throughout the playoffs right to the finals.
he used to be a fastbreak guy and a slasher, his game has grown a lot and now he's a consistent shooter with the ability to hit big time shots and win games.

his attitude is excellent too, hard worker, 100% focused, great mindset.

if i had to make a comparison, i could say a bigger rudy fernandez.

FWIW...Before the crash, I (I posted as Stats49) posted a couple of threads looking at drafts over last 10 years. Hardly any 2nd rounders have panned out, though it seems to be getting a little better lately. And even Top 10 picks weren't much for All Stars, just depended on the year. Obviously, Lebron's class was extremely rich as He, Wade, Bosh, Melo all have been to multiple All Stars, but that seemed to be the exception. Its quite the crapshoot for drafting talent in the draft, some teams have been better over and over then others. Unfortunately, those threads went off the grid with the crash of CTG.

As for the trade...Utah had to take on the salary in order to get to the salary floor. They picked up 20million in expiring contracts. DEN got a 2nd round pick just for Iggy...so they didn't get much.

If you are GS, and you have Iggy/Klay/Barnes and hopefully Lee healthy for next couple years that gets you at least out of the top 10 of the draft, then any healthiness you get out of Curry/Bogut is going to get you deeper and deeper into the first round, possibly into the 20's. I see GS as a team on the rise, but they are really banking on these guys getting them where they want because they have traded picks like they don't matter.

It was a good pickup for GS, will be even better the more Steph is able to play. I like the nucleus of Steph/Klay/Iggy though, that's pretty solid.

ESPN NBA - Source - SF Andrei Kirilenko, Nets agree to terms; Kirilenko averaged 12.4 PPG, 5.7 RPG last season with Wolves.

The head russian...signs a talented russian. Nice pickup for Nets.

Yesssssss. Solid.

Great sign by the nets.. Makes them 10 deep with a good defensive backbone...
Ak gave up 10 million to become free agent now only making 3. . I am going to say their is an account in Russia or Switzerland that may have 7 million in it.. Just a guess..

We need a solid three point weapon off the bench and then we are golden. Lets do it!!!!

it's such a strange team though...

Warriors sign Toney Douglas for 1 year $1.6 million. Looks like he'll probably be backing up Curry at the point unless we sign somebody else. He's an on-ball defender so maybe the Warriors are looking at defense more with the Iggy signing also. They also picked up Jermaine O'neal, not sure what he's getting paid. The team is starting to shape up. Starters are strong. I like them up and down. Bench is ok but that's ok since the starters are going to be playing most of the time. I'm hoping they pick up one more decent free agent.

Starters
PG- Stephen Curry
SG- Klay Thompson
SF- Andre Iggy
PF- David Lee
C- Andrew Bogut

Bench
Toney Douglas
Harrison Barnes
Draymond Green
Marreese Speights
Festus Ezili
Jermaine O'neal

I think that GSW really built a very nice roster here.

The problem is that they are at the moment, are a team that can easily go to WC Semi Finals or Finals, but hard to see them go all the way at this point.

ding ding ding. fun squad to watch and will compete but hard to see them going all the way.

The rest of the NBA had resigned itself to billionaire Mikhail Prokhorov's relentless pursuit of players and playoff success, absorbing it all until the Brooklyn Nets are pushing an unprecedented $185 million in payroll and punitive taxes. From Deron Williams to Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce to Joe Johnson, these Nets embody the spirit of the Russian's imperialistic vision.
201307111910690403711-p5.jpg
Andrei Kirilenko opted out of a contract that would have paid him $10 million with the Timberwolves this season. …Prokhorov had come to conquer the NBA, constructing a basketball arena in the borough of Brooklyn and empowering general manager Billy King to transform a barren roster into a championship contender. The Nets were destined to gather talent in this kind of boldly belligerent way, big names and bigger contracts stacked to the stars. From $101 million in salary to $82 million in luxury tax, Brooklyn has introduced itself as one of the biggest targets in the history of the NBA.
Only this time, the rest of the NBA believes the Nets have gone too far, delivering the league into an unfiltered rage. The signing of Russian free agent Andrei Kirilenko – a $10 million-a-year player last season – for Brooklyn's $3.1 mini-midlevel exception has transformed rival owners and front office executives into an angry mob of disbelievers.
The insinuations are unmistakable: Around the NBA, there are calls for the commissioner's office to investigate the possibilities of side deals and Russian rubles ruling the day – for now, unfounded charges based on circumstance and appearances.
Within the NBA, there had long been those promising that deals would start popping up involvingProkhorov that made no fiscal sense, theorizing that high-end players could take less within the constraints of the salary cap and still make up the difference in clandestine pacts.
Once the Russian billionaire convinced a superb Russian player to take $7 million less to be a backup to Pierce, the rest of the NBA's reaction was instant and uproarious. For the first time now, the Nets have truly arrived as a contending franchise. They're good, with a chance to be great, and the rest of the NBA wants an investigation.
"Brazen," one Western Conference GM told Yahoo! Sports.
20130420_jrc_ag9_054-cb0eff63789ad37c49b81d1467ecc94e
Mikhail Prokhorov has shown little concern for the NBA's hefty luxury-tax penalties. (USA Today Sports)"Let's see if the league has any credibility," one NBA owner told Yahoo! Sports. "It's not about stopping it. It's about punishing them if they're doing it."
Another Eastern Conference GM: "There should be a probe. How obvious is it?"
The telephone calls and text messages kept coming on Thursday night and Friday morning, and the reason was simple: Few trust Prokhorov to honor the NBA's salary-cap rules and regulations. He made his $15 billion fortune in the wild 1990s in Russia in what he called, "cowboy territory with no sheriff." Bribes were part of the business culture, and Prokhorov confessed to his part in it.
It is easy to make the accusations, but harder to prove that Prokhorov and his management did anything but a solid sales job after the free-agent market had dried up onKirilenko. When it comes to uninhibited spending and free-agent coups, the modern NBA has a long list of targets. Understand something else, too: Plenty of American-born owners, running respected franchises, have come under these suspicions, too. Charges of side deals didn't start with Prokhorov and won't end with him.
Nevertheless, this is the second time there's been questions about the Nets' signing of a foreign free agent below market value.
A year ago, Brooklyn agreed on a full midlevel-exception deal with Euro forward Mirza Teletovic on a three-year, $15.7 million contract. Shortly after the agreement, Brooklyn realized it needed to alter the exception slot to still keep open the chance for cutting a trade for Dwight Howard. Without re-entering the market, Teletovic accepted a three-year, $9 million deal at the mini midlevel.
Part of all this is the mystery surrounding Prokhorov, the distrust that comes with how he amassed his fortune, and his bold predictions of an NBA title within five years of purchasing the franchise.
When the Boston Celtics made the Kevin Garnett deal to make themselves championship contenders, everyone accused Minnesota Timberwolves general manager Kevin McHale of preferential treatment of the Celtics and their general manager, Danny Ainge, in the deal. When Pat Riley brought LeBron James and Chris Bosh together for discounts on max contracts, there were cries of collusion.
Nets officials will privately tell you they understand these suspicions were inevitable – even if they believe the suspicions are misguided and misinformed. Nevertheless, Kirilenko has long been a target of Prokhorov, the highest-profile Russian star in the NBA and forever an object of the owner's desire. The Nets were discussing deals to back up Pierce with the pedestrian Alan Anderson until discussions with Kirilenko became more serious in the past several days.
Kirilenko wanted a three-year deal with a minimum of $8 million per season, front-office executives said. Several teams, including the San Antonio Spurs, pursued Kirilenko with sign-and-trade discussions with Minnesota only nothing could get done. Kirilenko has history with Deron Williams, the Nets star. They played together for five years in Utah. Most of all, Kirilenko has history with Prokhorov. The billionaire owned CSKA Moscow, and Kirilenko played for him there, too.
The Nets pursued Kyle Korver with its $3.1 million exception to start free agency, but he re-signed with Atlanta. Eventually, Kirilenko and the Nets were left shopping, and a deal was consummated on Thursday.
Brooklyn gets a strong, athletic defender to pursue James and Dwyane Wade in the playoffs, one more willing passer and scorer. For the Nets, too, they get the scorn of the sport now. Everyone can suggest it was easy to construct this roster with no financial limitations, but, rest assured, everyone couldn't have done what Prokhorov and King have done with these Nets – whatever everyone thinks. Brooklyn has arrived with suspicions and charges and jealousies, arrived in unmistakable and unprecedented noise. Here are the Nets now: From Russia, with loathe.

[h=1]D.R.A.F.T. Initiative: Pick-based analysis[/h]

If there is a guiding principle of the NBA draft, it's the notion of "upside." Teams envision the best-case scenario for every prospect; fans assume players will meet all expectations and comparisons.
Here at Insider, though, we're all about reality. And history has taught us that more often than not, draft picks don't exactly measure up to the hype, albeit not always on a Darko/Dirk scale. To determine what is realistic, then, we looked back at the past 20 drafts (beginning in 1989, when the NBA pared the draft to two rounds) and examined the value produced at each slot. The chart below shows the end result of a complicated process of number crunching.
Using John Hollinger's estimated wins added statistic, plus some nifty regression analysis, we were able to determine an expected value for every pick in the draft, independent of this year's specific teams or players. The next column shows the actual average EWA for each pick. We have included the best and worst players drafted at each slot, based on EWA -- think of this as a ceiling and a floor -- as well as the drafted player who comes closest to resembling the expected EWA for a given pick. That's the caliber of player you should expect your team to select.
From now through the draft, we'll expand on all of these concepts, and we'll also examine the best and worst breeding grounds of talent, team-based drafting tendencies and players' career arcs based on whether they entered the draft out of high school, college or the international ranks.
For now, familiarize yourself with the table below, as well as its team-based counterpart. And then recalibrate your expectations.

Thanks ReNew...much appreciated. I remember my research about 2nd round picks...they are basically worthless.

From the numbers above...over 20 years

55 2nd round picks were not "scrubs" out of 542...which is just about 10%...so 3 players per draft out of 30 picks...are not scrubs.
Absolute, total crapshoot when it comes to making 2nd round picks. And I am almost positive its down to 1 or 2 in the last few drafts, which brings the percentage down to 3-6%.

As for the first round, there is big drop off after the 1st 6 picks. If you scout right and make the right picks, you can have some nice finds in the first round, but otherwise, picks 7-30 are pretty much the same.

We already know this...either be real good or real bad, but don't be a contender for a playoff spot or last in the playoffs because its the worst place to be in NBA.

I just find it fascinating how little the draft matters after the top 6. Its not too big a deal for a team like the Heat to give up their 1st round picks when they are winning championships.

Based on this analysis, you would have to think Warriors didn't give up much to get Iggy.

Hearing Devin Harris is on his way back to Dallas. Mavericks and Harris are closing in on three-year, $9+ million deal

Nope....not for 9mill, probably for less.

right.

thats what this article was reference in the pelicans grantland article. discussing whether the hornets are giving up to much or not. We know we are getting a sure thing in jrue holiday. I think taking an all-star PG at the age of 23 is a risk I'm willing to take, replacing a 26 year old defensive liability in vasquez. plus losing noel and a top 5 protected pick in 2014 im completely fine with. Noel i feel has bust written all over him and the best the 76ers might get from us is a what... 13/14th pick of the 1st round IMO. no one is trading up in the draft next year to grab the 1 or 2 pick.

I think demps was smart to not fight with half the league trying to tank and go after the BIG FAs or draft picks next year and start building a team beginning with a young core this year.

I love how it's okay for the heat to sign players that are willing to take pay cuts but when prokorhov does it he must be paying the players under the table. Lol

There was a bit of a difference in the pay cuts, wasn't there? And dude signed for 15.7MM then a day later signs a deal for only 9MM? Who would do that if you weren't getting some or all of the other 6MM back somehow that was rightfully yours?

Not to mention Prokorhov isn't exactly shy about his under the table dealings in the past. Clearly this situation looks much more sinister than any other teams' dealings with contracts. Fan of NJ or not, it's pretty easy to see no?

Surprised this hasn't been posted yet...

Baron Davis says he was abducted by aliens about two weeks ago

Former New York Knicks guard Baron Davis has been a lot of places thanks to his professional career. He's been able to tour all over the United States and has traveled the world as an NBA player. He's translated a lucrative career with six franchises into incredible artistic opportunities with gaming and with the entertainment industry.

According to Davis during a podcast interview with THE CHAMPS, he might have also been to a spaceship recently. At the very least, he says he was with aliens when he was abducted on a drive from Las Vegas to Los Angeles. Via the New York Post:
“I was actually abducted by aliens two weeks ago,” Davis said.
When probed for details, he explained he was driving from Las Vegas to Los Angeles in the early morning recently and this is what happened:
“I see this light and it's a big a—truck. And I said, oh f---- this is going to be traffic,” Davis said. :Driving, driving and the next thing you know there's a steel thing and these crazy looking people – half human, half ugly-looking mother f-----s.
“They were poking me on the nose, looking at my eyes, they had my hands tied and the next thing you know I was in Montabello dude, burning rubber on the way back to L.A. at 4 o'clock in the morning.”
The weird part of this story to me is that Davis was driving from Las Vegas to Los Angeles. I get that it's only about a 3 1/2 to 4-hour drive, but it just seems like if he was going to enjoy his time there, he'd catch a quick flight so he could have plenty of rest and recovery.
Sure, the entire part about Davis being abducted by aliens seems strange, but the fact that he drove from Vegas to Los Angeles just doesn't add up to me.

I have zero doubt that Kirilenko got some promises out of Prokhorov in exchange for the signing, but I have no problem with that.
It's the way the buisness have always been done in Russia and it doesn't have to be illegal or something.

I think that if Prokhorov simply told him that he will take care of him after this season, AK could have simply believed him.

Also, they are old friends and Prokhorov is really tight with current president and prime minister of Russia and I can also can easily see Kirilenko doing that simply out of respect and simply knowing that it can be very good for him in the future, if he returns to Russia (and he plans to).

It's the same as players willing to take pay cuts for a chance to win a ring, for a chance to stay in a team that they like, for a chance for the team to get better players.

I believe that no real money was switched under the table, just full understanding by Kirilenko that it's very good to be Russian that Prokhorov is in debt to...

Yeah it's quite similar to how some players want to go to bigger market teams to get more exposure for life after the NBA. Carmelo wanted to come to NYC to possibly have a career in film production after his days in the NBA are over.

Atlanta allegedly matched on Teague. Interesting to see what Bucks do with Jennings now. No way he wants to be there even for just this year.

The Rockets will add Hakeem Olajuwon to their staff in an official capacity.

His exact job has yet to be announced and he will spend most of his time at home in Jordan. Olajuwon has taught plenty of big men in the NBA and most of the time it isn't cheap. The Dream reportedly charges $50,000 for a week of lessons to the likes of Amare Stoudemire and others. Dwight Howard and Omer Asik don't have a bevy of offensive moves, so if Olajuwon is brought on as a big-man coach close to full time, it could be a very helpful hire.

Olajuwon needs to teach Howard and Asik some post moves with their backs to the basket. Howard could be one of the greatests IMO if he could add a post game. The defense is there. Rebounding there. Well I take that back on being one of the greatest. He still needs leadership skills and a couple rings.

Ron artest is beat. Really how can anyone say he is a good signing?

I don't call him that. I call him ron artest.
Cheap or not his tank is empty...
