2008/09 Under-Valued/Over-Valued Team Consensus

I have always tried to get some consensus figures going here on CTG because we ARE the public and Vegas loves our money. Usually the consensus polling fails though. We got about a good month to see if this can work.

The first 2-2.5 weeks of the NBA season is a money making opportunity for the betting public. It takes Vegas a couple of weeks to adjust to the new season. The NFL is "sorta" similar, but since it's only once a week, there are less opportunities.

I believe this part of the NBA betting season is when you must build your bank roll. You can then afford to play out the ups and downs of the middle part of the year. Then, if your psyche is still in tact, end the season on a winning note playing the playoff situations.

The opening weeks of the NBA season takes no "inside information" or wise-guy mentality to make money. The pro gamblers know as much as we know before the season starts--some teams have added/lost players and NO ONE knows how the teams will mesh.

What I hope to accomplish is to find out who we all think are the over-valued and under-valued teams to start the season. It will give us a decent public consensus of team perception. You can then decide how to interpret the consensus.

List 3 under-valued teams and 3 over-valued teams to start the year. You can provide a short or long analysis, or not.

Although we can't say without seeing the lines, I've got:
Undervalued: Indiana- not sexy team but have the tools and system to excel and put up points, (not sure yet w/o seeing lines but..) Detroit- the choas of trade rumors made it seem like Detroit needs to rebuild. They still have one of the best starting 5s position for position, along with incredible sparks off the bench with their developing youth. Also, new coach- they might actually care this yr Charlotte- again not a sexy team, but solid lineup: Felton, Jrich, Wallace, May, Okafor. with Augustine, Carrol, Morrison, Dudley and Muhammed off the bench with wildcard Ajinca. should surprise some people under larry brown to finally take advantage of all the talent on that team
Overvalued: Denver- lost their only defenders on a team that couldn't play D.. will still win some blowouts with their homecourt advantage, which should create a lot of value fading them esp on the road. I see a mid-season internal self-destruction, Chicago- they have the talent and derrick rose- which should inflate lines. They still are depending on a rookie coach, rookie PG, and their top scorer is still iffy which should make for a bad start. Miami- not sure if Vegas will adjust, but Miami seems like everyone's popular pick to have a crazy bounceback. They saw Wade's olympics, Beasley's a sav, Marion.. and although I think they'll be vastly improved this season, likely not as much as the rest of the world. Wanna see one of their lines, or their win total O/U though

I think once we see the team win total O/U, we should be able to determine better who Vegas likes this yr

Without seeing them in action, its hard to say Portland, Philly, and Houston will be overvalued. These three teams are obviously the ones that ON PAPER improved the most in the offseason. This may or may not result in immediate results in the W column. great example: Boston last yr. made a lot of moves in offseason, beginning of season- showed that on paper they were good and on the court- they were great. Counterex: last yr NYK added Randolph- On paper, it looked like they just added a western all-star forward that should be able to dominate the east, alongside Curry making the best twin towers in the league. result- um the knicks. So although portland/philly/Hous may have newish teams, it doesnt necessarily mean bad results imo. I wouldnt fade them until a couple games if they prove that they're better on paper than on the court

Portland was a .500 team with youth all around and their prized draft pick hurt all season. Coming into this season people expect Portland to be good because the youth has gained experience after playing last year and the addition of Oden can only help. It just never ends up being that easy. I think Portland will be overvalued this year.

Last year it was obvious that the C's improved their personnel, but the oddsmakers still weren't giving them the respect they should have been getting early in the season (they started the season 7-0 ATS). I think we could see a similar situation with the 76ers.

On another note, gotta love Celts -165 to win the division, no? I remember saying last year I wish I laid my house on the Celts +100 to win the division last year instead of just $50. Is this a sucker line?

Last year it was obvious that the C's improved their personnel, but the oddsmakers still weren't giving them the respect they should have been getting early in the season (they started the season 7-0 ATS). I think we could see a similar situation with the 76ers.

I think adding elton brand who we haven't seen for a stretch in a while is a bit different from adding KG + ray allen to a team that already had paul pierce.

Also, I think the blazers have a better chance of being a good team than the 76ers. They played detroit well in the playoffs, but I'm not sold on them yet, even with brand. I do have some faith in the blazers though. They have a solid starting 5 with a solid bench. They are young but I really like their core. Might take some time to get used to oden + aldridge though. Not sure I wouldn't try to trade one of them if oden plays well.

doubt they turn into the bulls either. the bulls are a pathetic bunch imo lol. they overachieved individually, and after making a mistake of not trading some of their depth, they are in a bad spot, especially with that douche BG7. he might put up stats this year, but stat is all he will care about.

I am interested in seeing how the spurs are treated. they can easily be over or under valued. They have potential to play like a championship team, or like an old and injured team.

pistons will be interesting also, seeing what they do with their youth. joe dumars has really done an incredible job with them. not only did he build a championship team, he also built them for the future.

The jazz and rockets should also be interesting to watch. I'm not convinced either is a real contender yet, especially with houston's injuries. yao and tmac can never stay healthy, and with the lakers and celtics out there, I'm not sure if any of the other teams really stand a chance, but we will have to see, because anything can happen
