If the Cajuns do become bowl-eligible this year but don’t get to and win the SBC title game, their postseason destination would be uncertain — if they even get an invite.
The Sun Belt currently has tie-ins with four other bowls, not including its recently announced affiliation with the new Myrtle Beach Bowl in South Carolina, which doesn’t debut until 2020. Those games are played in Mobile and Montgomery, Alabama; Orlando, Florida; and Tucson, Arizona.
But five SBC teams already are bowl-eligible this year (Troy, Appalachian State, Georgia Southern, UL Monroe and Arkansas State), and two others — UL and 5-5 Coastal Carolina — could still get there.
With a likely dearth of at-large spots in other bowls, up to two eligible Sun Belt teams could get shut out of postseason play.
That makes reaching, and winning, the title game a high priority for the Cajuns.
The road to it, however, isn’t easy.
According to the SBC:
“If ULM (6-4, 4-2) can take a win over West rival Arkansas State (6-4, 3-3) on the road (Saturday), and Louisiana (5-5, 3-3) falls in an upset to South Alabama (2-8, 1-5) in its home finale, the Warhawks will punch a ticket to the Sun Belt’s Championship Game.
“A win by both the Warhawks and Ragin’ Cajuns will set up a winner-take-all-game in Monroe between the two teams in the final Saturday of the regular season.
“An Arkansas State win over ULM on Saturday keeps the Red Wolves in the hunt for the West Division title.”
Also from the Sun Belt:
“Troy remains the league’s only unbeaten team in Sun Belt play. … The Trojans (8-2, 6-0) have a chance at locking up the East Division this weekend if they can win at home over Texas State (3-7, 1-5), coupled with an Appalachian State home loss to Georgia State (2-8, 1-5).
“If the Mountaineers (7-2, 5-1) win Saturday, regardless if Troy wins, it sets up a de facto championship game on Nov. 24 in Boone for the East title.”
Little of that matters for the Cajuns if they can’t beat South Alabama on Saturday.
