***Super Bowl LI Discussion: Atlanta vs New England***

Anonymous Ravens Player - "The Patriots defense gets a lot of credit for taking away the opponents biggest weapon. We tried to do that but we could never figure out how to take away the officials"

Chump change per David Purdum below...Guessing we'll hear something on Mayweather's bet tomorrow.

Las Vegas sportsbook operator @CGTechnology_ took a $1 million bet on the Atlanta Falcons +3 this afternoon, per @jsimbal.

@MGMRaceSports took a $485,000 bet on the Patriots -3 today. "We're back to about 60 percent Pats money," says vice president Jay Rood.

A lot of money is wagered on the SB, no book will risk to take a side. Individual books will get unbalanced action, but not the market as a whole. The Super Bowl may be the game of the year where the line is truly set by the public.

The books with unbalanced action will then seek to hedge it, maybe the big books even have a kind of a clearing house where they can swap risk with each other.
Local bookies probably simply place bets on the other side if they feel they are too exposed to some outcome.

There could be an exception if the books feel certain that the line is going to move in one direction, but it still seems very risky. What if a key player has an accident etc.

As much as I comb through things I come back to the same conclusion: who do I trust more to play better red zone defense? That's the Pats, easily. Neither team is likely to punt much but feels like Atlanta may be forced to settle for 3s in some situations where New England may not. Just way too much youth on that Atlanta defense, especially on this stage against the best QB the game has ever seen.

13 Super Bowls have been decided by the following margins: 10, 12, 14 & 17 pts.

12 Super Bowls have been decided by the following margins: 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 11 & 13 pts.

---------

Not reading the whole thread, but I presume someone's already noted that with Brady at the helm,

- the Pats have never scored a single 1st quarter point in the Super Bowl.

1Q results: 3 losses, 3 ties
2Q results: 4 wins, 2 ties

---------

In the last 11 Super Bowls, the NFC team has led at half-time just twice.

In the last 16 Super Bowls, no NFC team has led at half-time when scoring 19 pts or less.

Just heard on Fox sports radio that Alex Mack will play but the Falcons are unsure how long he can go as he has a fractured fibula.

Atlanta Falcons Pro Bowl center Alex Mack, the NFL's top free-agent acquisition this past season, will play Super Bowl LI with a fracture in his left fibula that he suffered in the NFC Championship Game, according to sources.

One source said that if this were the regular season, Mack could miss six to eight weeks, but he will be out there Sunday, with concern running high among Atlanta officials.

The Falcons are confident Mack will hold up in pass-blocking, but they are uncertain if he will be effective on downfield blocks, or if his leg will hold up.

The fracture occurred above the plate that Mack had inserted in his left leg after he broke his fibula in 2014. The plate might have been a blessing, helping to support a leg that suffered what one source describe as a "chip fracture." Mack didn't practice the week after the NFC Championship game, then was limited in practice this past week.

Mack will receive a pain-killing injection to help him get through the game, per sources.

Pain killing injection. You think?

Well he only missed one play before sitting out the final series during the NFC Championship game so maybe it isn't as big a deal as it sounds.

Two things that make me weary of Pats. Well, 3.

Everyone is on the Pats.

Shanahan the brightest, smartest mind in the game.

And the Pats haven't seen an offense like this without having tape on them.

Pats play to the level of the competition and do just enough to win. Unless the opposing team really sucks, then they run the score on you.

I really cant decide on a side. I think my favorite play is 3384 Winning margin under 7½ points -105*

THE SINGLE BIGGEST MISTAKE PEOPLE ARE MAKING IS CLAIMING THAT THE PATS WILL WIN BECAUSE THEY WILL TAKE JULIO OUT OF THE GAME. I'm so tired of hearing it. Has everyone forgotten Freeman, Coleman, Sanu, etc? They are not a one dimensional team. Stop making stupid comments because Joe Buck commented about how Bill always takes out the biggest asset of the other team. You make look like sheep.

Will the Pats win? Maybe. But it won't be for one singular reason. It will be because they shut down Ryan, and the run.

Sanu is a slow possession receiver, wish people would stop referring to him as a weapon. Julio will get his but I don't think the Falcons will find a running game and in games where they had 90 years or less rushing they were only 3-3.

This will be the first year in at least 12 years that I don't have a single wager on the SB and I feel pretty good about it. Just going to watch and hope for a good game. I think I've been on the right side of the outcome only 1 time in the past 6-7 years so I'm probably saving myself some money.

This shocks me. I will play their 1Q TT Under today.
I believe ATL is +.5 -120 1Q as of now.

Don't do it

The Falcons have scored an opening-drive touchdown in eight straight games, while this game’s total suggests 5.9 points should be scored every six minutes. Incredibly, New England has failed to score a single point in the first quarter of all six Super Bowls quarterbacked by Tom Brady, a statistic of which the Patriots are acutely aware. “Coach Belichick has reminded me about ten times in the last ten days,” Brady told reporters when asked about the scoreless first-quarter streak this week. Added OC Josh McDaniels, “It’s obviously something we’d like to change.”

Longtime Bill Belichick confidante Mike Lombardi stated this week that he anticipates the Patriots prioritizing grabbing an early lead and beating the typically fast-starting Falcons at their own game. “Belichick’s mandate all week: ‘Start Fast,’” Lombardi wrote in his Super Bowl preview for The Ringer. "Belichick's first quarter will be all about building a lead and learning Atlanta's plan." While such a strategy may be easier planned than accomplished, it would be a means of forcing Atlanta out of its comfort zone and creating positive game script for New England, allowing the Patriots to stay balanced. The Pats traditionally defer when they win the coin toss. If they win the opening flip in this game, I expect New England to take the ball.

Pats always want the ball to start the 2nd half too. That could change this game if they win the toss. Didn't they also take the ball first after winning the toss in one of the playoff games this year?

Pussing out on a side, unless my local hangs a juicier Atlanta money line out there. Was happy to see the game total drop. Going with ...

Over 56.5
OT yes +800
Trump tweets at the winner -165
New record for passing yards (415+ yds) +325
Bennett 1st TD +1200
Longest FG over 46.5 -115
First score under 5-1/2 minutes +100

Good luck everybody!
