NEW YORK MUTTS/PITTSBURGH PIRATES UNDER 8
The Mets like to take days off after blowing out the competition. They also struggle with pitchers they've never seen. I think Karsten will do well here. Santana is a great day pitcher and should have his way with a relatively weak Pirates lineup. The only concern is the Met bullpen.

ANGELS ML/RL
The Halos didn't even play that well today and got the win. Looking at the body language it's hard to like Cleveland against a team like LAA unless Lee is on the mound. The Angels get it done tomorrow.

DODGERS -1.5 +160-
Kershaw was filthy in his last start. I love fading Suppan on the road. The Dodgers are playing great baseball and I see incredible value with the run line.

BLUE JAYS +175
This line is way off. The 2008 version of Beckett doesn't deserve this much respect.

MARLINS +115

BLUE JAYS +175
This line is way off. The 2008 version of Beckett doesn't deserve this much respect.

In his last 5 starts Beckett has pitched 32.2 IP for 12 ERs against teams not called the Angels, for an ERA of 3.30

Marcum, on the other hand, in his last 5 starts (since he returned from injury) has pitched 27.2 IP for 19 ERs against teams not called the Angels, for an ERA of 6.18 (figures which become markedly worse if you minus his start vs that garbage offense of Oaklands).

Boston is 12-3 SU in Beckett starts where they give him at least 4 runs of support - 2 of the 3 losses were road games.

Boston at home off a (likely) shutout loss, against a guy who himself isn't in 2007 form (when he pitched well against the Red Sox), isn't likely imo to be held to less than 4 runs.

Psychic or psychotic pick. Oakland 1.5 unit ml and 1/2 unit alternate rl. Reasons--? Last 10 on the road in last game of a road series WS are 2-8. WS on the road on Sunday this season 2-8. Oakland at home on Sunday this season 6-3 with 5 by 2 or more. Vazquez on the road on Sunday with WS 0-6 last 20 he is 5-15. Vazquez last 13 games has had a terrible game at least every other game. He is coming off a great game heading into game 14
By the way tomorrow the Yankees are at home on Sunday. Moose last 20 in this spot is 15-5 while the Yankees are 16-4 last 20 and this season 8-1. This also fits the covers chart so will be playing them mostly ml.

At quick glance Kershaw and Cub/Marlin UNDER have my attention.. Can't remember the last time I played an under but that one looks solid..

Totals players: talk me off it.:shake:

Reds now 3-13 since Griffey left (FYI Harang fast ball was 86 mph, this is 6 mph off what he use to do)

A's now 5-23 since July 13th

Great insight guys on the Cards play for Saturday....you guys convinced me although I was hesitant on Piniero. Let me play Devil's Advocate for Sunday because I lean slightly towards Cincy this time. Yesterday I leaned towards Stl but was hesitant.

Lohse scares me. His longitudinal trends over 7 years (http://www.fangraphs.com/graphs.aspx playerid=739&position=P&page=0&type=full) look like an EKG but he tends to stay with a trend for a period of time before bouncing back. Predicting those trends seems virutally impossible. Right now he is in his worst period in over a season. Lohse's career problem has been an inability to bring consistency over long periods of time. He seemed to be defying it this season but suddenly has hit his worst point of the season. In his last 5 starts, he has thrown 29.7 innings and allowed 36 hits, 21 earned runs and 6 HR's. In his non-decisions, he is 2-6 so his W-L record skews reality and the Cards are 15-11 overall in his starts. I can't fault someone for backing the Cards, but I lean towards Volquez or maybe the OVER.

Baltimore's last 46 games of offense -

11, 2, 9, 2, 5, 7, 5, 7, 10, 3, 10, 6, 8, 5, 7, 1, 1, 5, 7, 11, 1, 8, 8, 1, 1, 5, 6, 5, 13, 7, 3, 10, 3, 4, 5, 3, 4, 9, 9, 7, 8, 5, 6, 11, 11 & 3 run totals.

_7 totals of 0-2 runs.
_7 totals of 3-4 runs.
32 totals of 5+ runs (69.5%)

Their current 21 game streak of scoring at least 3 runs is their longest this season.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Baltimore has gone 70 games without posting consecutive Under results. They are 46-20-4 to Over during this period (Unders rate of just 28.6%), and are 17-0-2 to Over off their last 19 Under results.

They play Sunday off an Under result on Saturday.

I am going to do some more research now on similar statistics, but for now these are the ones I have found recently.

Cincinnati is 1-11 in L12 home games with the losses coming by 6, 2, 9, 2, 4, 3, 3, 7, 11, 4, and 5 runs. They have been outscored 83:27 in those losses.

Despite going 9-9 in their last 18 games against left-handed starters, Florida's lack of run production has been consistently poor. In 17 of the 18 games, the opposing starters have tossed 101 innings giving up only 32 runs (2.85 ERA). Whether or not Florida wins seems to rest completely on their starting pitching and the opponent's relief pitching since Florida has tapped out at 3 runs against the starter in 17 of those 18 games (2, 0, 3, 2, 2, 1, 2, 2, 3, 1, 3, 2, 2, 0, 2, 2, 3). The one exception was the 7 runs scored in 1.2 innings against the turbulent Jorge De La Rosa who couldn't find the strike zone.

Since July the 6th, the Chicago Cubs are...

- 22-2 SU in games which they've scored at least 3 runs (19-5 to Over)

- 0-10 SU in games which they've scored 2 runs or less (9-1 to Under)

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Chicago's last 23 games of all-or-nothing offense -

10, 6, 2, 2, 9, 6, 7, 7, 11, 0, 5, 8, 0, 11, 11, 3, 3, 6, 10, 8, 11, 6 & 1 run totals.

_7 totals of 0-3 runs
_1 totals of 4-5 runs (4.3%)
15 totals of 6+ runs (65.2%)

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Capping a side for their games has been as straightforward as simply concerning yourself with how their offense will go.

Since July the 21st, the Texas Rangers are...

- 9-2 SU in games which they've scored at least 6 runs (9-1-1 to Over)

- 2-12 SU in games which they've scored 5 runs or less (9-5 to Under)

I am seriously considering the Nats at +150 or more.

In Odalis Perez 11 home starts, he has allowed 3 earned runs or less in all 11, has a 2.50 ERA and the Nats are 6-5.

Aaron Cook almost went on the DL this week with shoulder/back fatigue. In his last 3 starts, he has lasted just 17.3 innings and allowed 30 hits and 15 earned runs.

I know the Nats are horrible but this seems to be a good spot at +150 or more.

Would be interested in other's thoughts.

Wish I knew what to gleen from this regarding 4 of 5 of Jeremy Sower's most recent outings:

8/12 6.3 IP, 6 hits, 4 runs
8/6 6.0 IP, 6 hits, 4 runs
8/1 6.7 IP, 6 hits, 4 runs
7/19 6.0 IP, 5 hits, 4 runs

Talk about consistency.

there may be reasons to back the nationals but the bottom line is don't do it. they have lost 9 in a row and they are down 25 units against the money line on the season. pretty awful considering they are dogged in seemingly every game

Florida ML (if Florida can beat him at Wrigley field, then they can do it at home too!) Cubs go under two games under .500 tomorrow. (Still rooting for them for World Champs!)
Pit ML (40% chance, nice odds)
Seattle ML (55-60% chance, very nice odds also... Seattle batters have pretty good stats against Perkins. Also, the pitcher for Seattle just got called up I think)
Houston (6-1 in Oswalt last 7 starts against the Dbacks)
Oakland (G. Gonzalez is a up and coming leftie... not to mention the sox have never seen him)

Dodgers RL might be worth a small play...

well the above is IMO... forgot to add that. The captain morgan's is running through my body after celebrating the Brewer's win... But Seattle is playing decent ball right now. At +190, they are worth a look because they can hit Perkins. I'm just worried about Feierbadne d ... over might be worth a look

There are 3 dogs over +175 I think and I believe at least one of them will come through. Seattle has the highest chance IMO

Cook on 6 plus rest. 3-7 with an era of 5.87. Cook in his last 3 starts 18.1 innings 18 runs. He has not pitched recently because of tightness of the back. Not pitched in 7 days. Perez has great history vs Colorado pitching at home. Considering a first half bet here.

any thoughts of a first 5 under so the pens don't come into play and there's no risk of karsten's getting tagged hid third time through the lineup?

Great post.

You know what the problem with Cincy is at the moment? Similar as the A's, they need 1 million chances to score. No killer instinct whatsoever. They could have KILLED Pineiro last night but tagged him for ONE measly run in the 1st.

What happens next, Harang self combusts and they tag him for what, 4 homers? Can't even count any more. I know Albert had two solo shots, Skip I think nailed a 3 run HR...

Cincy don't have a guy who can clean the bases. They may tag Lohse for 6 IP, 8 H and only 3-4 runs. Would not be surprised at all. St Louis can match that in their sleep.

With Griffey and Dunn they at least had the authority and these guys did knock 45 homers in the season but now they have plenty of guys who can get on base (Hairston, Dickerson, Bruce, Keppinger)...

but Volquez has regressed big time as well.

So basically you have two pitchers who are regressing, and two teams on different paths.

Home advantage?

Cincinnati is 0-8 in last 8 home games
31-33 overall

St Louis 37-28 on the road (2nd in the majors, behind Anaheim), 6-2 v Cincinnati in 2008.

What would definitely prevent me from playing Cincinnati, the Reds lost a lot of their pop with Dunn and Griffey Jr, they get on base but don't knock as many homers, especially not with RISP.

Lohse has been allowing HRs but so has Volquez of late. STL or no play for me, probably a no play due to Lohse's severe signs of regression.

GL :shake:

BUT....0-8 in last home games...
same as OAKLAND was 0-12 against RHP until they beat DANKS who shut em out earlier this season....

I would take my chances with cinci because I think STL busted their load.... but I am not betting on the game...

I understand, what I'm saying is, I would not take a team that will probably need an out of the ordinary offensive effort to score more than 3 runs against a team with that kind of lineup core, this is a killer order right here

Ludwick
Pujols
Ankiel
Glaus

One good inning is all they need to score 3 or more. Cincy may strand another 20 runners (this is exactly what they did last night, TWENTY stranded baserunners, they had 10 hits compared to Cards' 13 but lost 9:3).

There are very good arguments for STL.... I think its a stay away game... I'm hoping for a DOG sunday but will be staying away from Cinci.. no offensive threat... At least Oakland has FraNK Thomas and Emil Brown... along with Kurt Suzuki who had that walk off... He is a up and coming star... Give it two more years.... Cinci has Dunn.. Thats it... Gluck!

I completely agree, exactly what im thinking.... cin reds have solid hitters but no one to bring em in too much inconsistency, hard to tell when they bring it

are we all sure that beckett is starting? covers has C. Bucholz... espn has beckett though

and is padilla really out?... nippert is listed at covers and espn

Just a quick pointout, pretty much none of the teams have seen Gio Gonzalez yet BUT if there is one team that should have him scouted/watched the best it should be the Chicago White Sox. He was in our farm system for at least the past 2 years if I'm not mistaken, was supposed to be one of our "up and comers" but just never got a shot being stuck behind the likes of Brandon McCarthy, Charlie Haegar, and Lance Broadway. Supposed to have pretty good stuff, was one of the focal points for the Swisher deal if I remember correctly. I bet he'll want to get some "revenge" against his old team. Good luck with your plays.

Thanks for the wishes. I believe Oakland will win by no no more than 2 runs if G can shut em down and go 7 IP

Betting the A's or Reds in any situation is a poor investment, these are 2 teams that for all practical purposes have quit & are very bad, why try & throw darts & guess when they might win a game, just fade them both each & every day till seasons end.

A's are 5-23 since July 13th

Reds are 3-13 snce Griffey left

San Diego at home vs lefthanders this season - God almighty....

14 totals of 0-2 runs (66.6%)
_3 totals of 3-4 runs
_4 totals of 5+ runs

- on the 4 occasions they've scored 5+ runs, they've faced pitchers who carry the following road ERAs for this season - 2.40*, 4.53, 6.13 & 7.59. Hamels road ERA this season is 3.64.

*In the instance of the best ERA they faced, they only scored 2 ERs in 6 IP vs this starter, getting the rest vs relievers.

- since the All Star break, SD has scored 0, 1, 0 & 0 run totals in home games vs left-handed starters.

- SD is 1-8 SU, averaging 2.77 runs/game & carrying an average losing margin of 3.62 runs, in their last 9 home games vs left-handed starters without Jake Peavy as their own starter.

- SD has not had a win by more than 1 run as a home dog vs a left-handed starter this season.

- in their 17 home games vs left-handed starters when Jake Peavy wasn't their own starter, SD has allowed the opposition to score 5+ runs on 10 occasions - 58.8% of the time. These games are 8-7 to Over when the loser wasn't shutout.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Cha Seung Baek at home: the man who turns Petco into a hitter's park...

Home starts
WHIP 1.70, ERA 6.57, avg 5.14 opposition runs/game, SD 1-6 SU

All home pitching (starting & from bullpen)
WHIP 1.75, ERA 7.04

- In 4 of 7 starts he hasn't gone beyond the 5th inning, and hasn't gone a full 7 once.

- His K/BB ratio vs NL teams is 1.66:1

(111-63-27 - 115-67-30)

No play for me. Want no part of Volquez..Coin flip game IMO.

Those considering the Cards should check Larussa's "Sunday" lineup first..Day off tommorow but you never know with Larussa.

Also Pujols got hit in the foot late in the game. Stayed in but was noticeably limping. Here were Larussa's postgame comments:

"We'll check him tommorow. If he is hobbled, he'll miss."

Nice write up on the Phils / Padres BetCrimes.
Add to the fact that Hamels weakness is the occasional long ball, Petco should treat him well. I can't believe I'm going to lay 2-1 on a road team that hasn't been hitting, but I am.

With all due respect cashflow, the A's have not quit for the season. I will agree with you that they are a bad team, but these guys have not quit.

I watch these guys everyday. They are throwing out a Triple A lineup every day. These guys are trying very hard day in and day out.

Baltimore has gone 70 games without posting consecutive Under results. They are 46-20-4 to Over during this period (Unders rate of just 28.6%), and are 17-0-2 to Over off their last 19 Under results.

They play Sunday off an Under result on Saturday.

This streak will be tested today:

Detroit @ home is 1-7 O/U on Sunday (Tigers avg 3.9 rpg).
BAL on the Road is 0-10 W/L on Sunday (O's avg 2.6 rpg).

They draw a young gun ump in CAUSEY...pretty much a wild card.

However, OLSON has been horrible on the road last 5 outings:

9.2 rpg by the 1st 5 INN in games he started in last 5 road attempts.

I'll be watching this game closely.

Thanks for all your hard work BC...

Regarding the STL/CIN game, STL is 8th in BB/G and 6th lowest K/G. Not a great matchup IMO for Volquez who needs K's to get himself out of trouble. He walks a ton of guys and this is a team that could make him pay. He's also a lot better on the road than at home(.271 BAA vs .197 at home). This could be a good spot for the over and perhaps the Cards, I just don't think I can back an inconsistent Volquez right now, especially at home.

I think the Phillies RL is a safe play tonight. They're playing like trash but they should show up tonight.

Pujols is in the lineup. and all others significant bats are playing..

Just heard Larussa.. Cards are 14 games over .500. Been there several times but never been able to crack 15. Larussa said that is a very important number and with tommorow off, they are going for it today.. All regulars play..

Nevermind on the rays/rangers total. Nippert to start and not padilla. Not Brett favreing yet.

Things to think on. Anaheim next plays at Tampa, They were swept there last time which they clearly remember. Cleveland has been playing much harder in general and in day games recently making today a dangerous game,
You might think about the last time Perkins faced Seattle. The team blew a 6 run lead in the 7th inning which was a major humiliation. Under might be best here.

When the A's let Harden & Blanton go they for all intensive purposes quit! When the owership quits very hard for the players to win.

I was considering it but the problem is they're not playing well and the price is insane.

They will want to win for Hamels after a string of losses but nah I can't lay this mucho chalko.

:shake:
