Sunday 02/23/14 NBA discussion thread

Why? No great player has ever won without a #2 to back him up. Who's going to take over? Reggie Jackson?

Except Westbrook doesn't make Durant better in any way whatsoever. Westbrook is a very unconventional PG in my opinion. Not that he's not a great player, I just don't think Durant will ever win if he is not the man on the team. You could say that Durant needs to take control but he cannot do that with a shoot first PG like Westbrook.

Not NBA but want to vent my frustration, There have been 22 foul calls in 10 minutes in the Nebraska/Purdue game, that is a complete JOKE.

T-Wolves 4-11 ATS @ Portland since 2006, but the over is 10-4-1 in that game, and 12-1-1 L14 when they've met overall. This is the second-highest total in that series of games, though

  • History is expected to be made tonight when the Lakers host the Nets at Staples Center. Brooklyn forward Jason Collins, signed to a 10-day contract earlier in the day, is expected to make his season debut against L.A., making him the first openly Yag athlete to play in one of North American’s four major sports. Nets coach Jason Kidd told reporters before the game that he expects Collins to play in a backup role as Brooklyn will be thin up front with veteran Kevin Garnett sitting out after playing in Saturday night’s loss at Golden State and Reggie Evans traded earlier this week to the Sacramento Kings. ”It’s not about history or anything like that. It’s about going out there and make things difficult for the Lakers,” Collins said in a meeting with reporters about an hour before the game.

  • The Nets will also be without starting guard Shaun Livingston (bruised tailbone) and backup guardMarcus Thornton (food poisoning). Livingston, who is averaging 7.7 points, left in the first quarter of Saturday’s loss after taking a hard fall on a foul by Harrison Barnes while going for a layup, though X-rays came back negative. Thornton, who is averaging 8.3 points and came over in the trade that sent Evans to Sacramento, will miss his third straight game with the illness. Mason Plumlee will move into the starting lineup in Garnett’s spot and Andrei Kirilenko will take Livington’s spot in the backcourt.

  • The Lakers continue to get players trickling back into the lineup. Nick Young, the team’s second-leading scorer at 16.9 points, is set to return against the Nets after missing the last six games with a non-displaced fracture of the patella and a bone bruise in his left knee. Young will come off the bench as coach Mike D’Antoni is going with a starting lineup of Pau Gasol, Wes Johnson, Kendall Marshall,Jodie Meeks and Kent Bazemore, who was acquired at this week’s trade deadline and scored a career-high 15 points in his debut Friday against the Celtics. Gasol returned from a seven-game absence due to a groin injury and contributed 16 points in the victory, which snapped a franchise-record eight-game home-losing streak.

  • Both teams go into tonight’s game extremely shorthanded in the post. Portland is without starting power forward LaMarcus Aldridge (groin) and reserve centers Joel Freeland (knee) and Meyers Leonard (ankle). Minnesota will be minus starting center Nikola Pekovic (ankle) and reserve centerRonny Turiaf (knee) and also starting shooting guard Kevin Martin (thumb). ”We’re shorthanded, but they are, too,” Minnesota coach Rick Adelman said. “Everybody has to do a little bit more.”
  • One big man who is available, power forward Kevin Love, has been on a roll, having scored at least 30 points in four straight games and eight of his last 10 contests for the Timberwolves. He has never been better than in Friday night’s 121-104 win at Utah, earning the first triple-double of his career with 37 points, 12 rebounds and a career-high 10 assists. ”He was terrific,” Adelman said. “He took the game over in the third quarter, busted it open himself. We were able to coast in from there.”
  • Portland will start 6-9, 205-pound small forward Dorell Wright for the third straight game in Aldridge’s absence, but Stotts will likely go to 6-10, 245-pound Thomas Robinson early to defend Love.
  • Stotts said he has been impressed with the growth Love has shown since his rookie year in all areas and is particularly taken with Love’s ability to throw the outlet pass. ”That’s pure Wes Unseld,” Stotts said. “You don’t see anything like it these days. Kevin does it cohesively and on the money. It’s a big part of what they do. We need to minimize those opportunities.”
  • Stotts, asked if he still sticks to his pre-All-Star Game comment that the Trail Blazers have the best power forward in the game (in Aldridge) and the Timberwolves the second-best: “Well, they have the best one tonight.”
  • Portland small forward Nicolas Batum, who was limited to 25 minutes in Friday’s win over Utah due to gastrointestinal issues, will start. ”He was OK (Saturday) at practice and should be close to 100 percent tonight,” Stotts said.
  • The Timberwolves have won three straight to climb to 27-28, but still are six games behind No. 8 Dallas and four games back of No. 9 Memphis in the Western Conference race. Are the Wolves ready to make a playoff push? ”We’ll find out,” Adelman said. “We haven’t been able to do it to this point. It’s getting later in the season. You have to win games. It’s a mentality we have to have. … who knows what can happen? You have to win and hope that somebody stumbles. I told our players, ‘You can’t be satisfied with anything you’ve done. You haven’t done anything yet. You have to go into each game with the discipline to play better than the last game.’ “

Listen, if you don't believe it that's fine. There's no reason you should make stupid ass remarks about it. If you don't like his capping style that's your problem. Just sharing information. The guy is winning.

Whatever...

I think all the rants in the world won't help this nuggets team.

nbafan pointed out the very lopsided numbers against the Kings on b2b. In addition Denver has won 8 in a row at home vs the Kings and the line comes out -3? I don't care if the number settles in higher, I think that line is very telling here. Linesmakers have zero faith in the Nuggets to get it done here IMO

Yeah the nuggets with zero fucks given

Wolves faded.

Gonna have to hope this terrible 4th quarter team can find some offense.
