This might be a homer pick, but I think Dallas -2 against Cleveland is a joke. I love Pittsburgh minus the 7. I also like Jacksonville -2 against Tennessee.

If Week 1 was next week I'd probably go:

50 Dimes/Cowboys -2
25 Dimes/Pittsburgh -7
25 Dimes/Jacksonville -2

Any insight or other opinions?

BTW thursday night Giants are -4 against the Skins. Denver is -1 against Oakland I believe.
 
i was hoping to get cleveland with some nice points. I just do not believe dallas is going to be as good as they were the previous two seasons. Since dallas is largely a public team, i will wait til gameday to pull the trigger on the browns.

Just out of curiosity where did these numbers open up at, an offshore or a vegas book?

Perhaps this is a homer pick, but I don't think Jacksonville deserves to be favored in Nashville opening week.Last year these teams split their games with the road team winning each game. I would expect an other split only this time with the home team taking care of business. The Titans will have the motivation edge after losing to the Jags in their last meeting. Keep in mind that Haynesworth missed that game and the Titans D is night and day different when he plays. The Titans have the better kicking game and I would argue the better coach. You also have to factor in that there is a good chance Vince Young has pointed to this game for seven months to prove his critics wrong.

COWBOYS -2
I think the Browns are going to have a difficult time stopping Dallas. It's hard to imagine the Cowboys winning the game by a point.

You might be able to get Cleveland +4 on gameday, which would make me take Dallas ML. Cleveland is a team to be reckoned with this season, I just think Dallas is a huge matchup problem for them.

I got these from thesportsadvisors.com, their live scores and odds. I believe it's a whole bunch of different offshore books, that's why there are different spreads, to my understanding.
 
I just don't see how u can be confident laying chalk in the 1st week of football. Then again I am a predominantly dog/small fave bettor.

Still quite early, but one game that jumps off the page is The Bucs over the Saints. No need for points in that one- I think this line is driven largely by perception. TB has the better defense by a bunch, better coaching, better run game. In both meetings last season the Bucs prevailed & I think they win both again this season. Looking at futures, I see TB wins o8-105, & +210 to win the South? I think both present very good value....

Bills-2. Seattle on the road is a losing proposition most of the time. Bills revamped D comes in healthy, & with added help on the D-line & secondary, I think they have what it takes to get the home opener W.

SF ML- Exactly who are the Cardinals to be road chalk? The same team that went 2-6 on the road last season! I'm going to make a bold prediction & say that Patrick Willis will be the best LB in the game this seasaon. The addition of Justin Smith can only help their D, & Gore up against a pretty poor run D @ home seals the deal for me.

You were making sense up until you said Tampa has a better running game than NOLA. How so? Who can Gruden put against Deuce McAllister, Reggie Bush, Aaron Stecker, Pierre Thomas, and Mike Karney? It is obvious that Tampa has the better defense, but Tampa lacks in offense... still... and I have always wondered about that since Gruden is supposedly an offensive mastermind. Tampa did win both meetings last year, but if you remember correctly, it took a freak occurence of a botched handoff to stop NO at the end of the second game. Not to mention, opening game in the Superdome... that's about the biggest homefield advantage a NFL team can get.

I will not be playing this game, but I just wanted to provide food for thought. Now, +210 to win the NFC South is great value on Tampa. The South is anyone's division, and why not get two-to-one on your money on the best defensive team in the division. Atlanta will be a non-factor this season, so your options of the division winner is narrowed to three teams. Carolina is always in it because of coaching, defense, and a good running game.

#28 NO............avg 91.6 ypg/ 3.7 ypc


I don't see this one as debatable. Bush has really shown me nothing in the running game, & quite honestly I think Stecker is the better pure rb right now. Of course Bush presents a much better option out of the backfield. Remains to be seen how Deuce fares coming off his injury.


2. I do remember the end of that game, & though it was close the fact remains that TB prevailed.


3. Superdome the biggest advantage? That's utterly ridiculous, guiven they went 3-5 su last season at home, with just 1 win coming against a team over .500! I would hardly consider that a strong advantage. My vote would go to the Colts @ home as the biggest advantage.....

The stat line may read that Tampa's running game produced better, but the game isn't played on paper. NO lost Deuce early (and may very well lose him again since he is constantly injured) and without Deuce, Bush is not as valuable. Unlike most Saints fans, I agree that Stecker is a better pure RB. Truthfully, Lex, I think NO should trade Deuce and Bush while both still have value, and use Stecker and Pierre Thomas as our running options. Stecker is a veteran that can offer a second-year player like Thomas guidance to eventually take over. The problem is still NO's inexperienced OL. The other reason Tampa outrushed NO was because NO was coming from behind in so many games, whereas Tampa controlled many of their games. Also, having Brees behind center is a reason to pass more. Not to mention, Sean Payton loves to pass since he was a QB coach for Dallas before taking over in NO.

As far as homefield advantage, the results do not show because the Saints were a sub-par team last year, plagued by injuries. The noise causes problems for visiting teams. That is the advantage. Whether our team can actually execute plays is a different story.

And for the record, I would like to remind everyone that I am not a Sean Payton supporter. Coaching will be the reason NO will be stuck in a rut the next few years. And until our dumbass owner, Tom Benson, realizes this, we will not progress further than we did in 2007.

His drafting has been decent, not superb but ok. Reggie Bush kind of fell to him on his lap. So that pick was a give me although, in the long term i'm not sure that bush is going to be the superstar we all imagined but who knows NFL is soo unpredictable.

I agree with you to trade away those two RB's to get more help in other positions. I think RB is the most overrated position unless you have a can't miss RB i.e. adrian peterson, LT, westbrook, you get the idea. I think you can find pro style RB's later in the draft that very often pan out to be ok guys that you can get 3-5 years out of. Look at what GB has been doing for years.

I think it would be hard to do but a switch to a 3-4 defensive scheme wouldn't be a bad thing nesecarily because the rest of the division is currently runnign a 3-4 and it would allow the saints to be more effective on defense. Of course it would take 2-3 years to get the bodies to efficiently run the system, but in the long run i think it could be prove to be very beneficial.

This is my updated list:

I'm axing the Jags play, never should touch a Tennessee/Jax game.

Cowboys -2, Obligated to.
Redskins +4, Always give the Giants a good game.
Pittsburgh -7, Houston has no answer for the weapons the Steelers have.
Oakland +1, This will be the upset of week 1, think Jamarcus plays well, as well as McFadden. Plus that Oakland D is coming together.
Minnesota +3, Rivalry game minus Brett Favre, AD does his thing.

I don't like Payton, frankie. He did bring in Brees, but he was also a QB coach, so I would expect his best move to be acquiring a QB. Haslett was nothing great either, but the previous regime had Mike McCarthy as our OC before leaving for Green Bay and Ron Zook as the DC before leaving for UF then Illinois. Bobby April was the ST coordinator too, but he is running the ST show in StL now... I think.

Mickey Loomis has a heavy hand in the drafting, so I can't give Payton all credit. The drafting has been decent but nothing special (until this year? Ellis and Porter are looking good... I'm keeping my fingers crossed) Still a heavy bias toward offense.

I am a huge fan of the 3-4 scheme, but it requires good LB's which is something the Saints don't have. It would been a couple of years before we could establish good 3-4 personnel, and Gary Gibbs would be heading it up (although if I remember correctly, Gibbs came from a LB background. And, we now have Ed Ogeron coaching the DL).

I like all your picks. I think Minnesota is going to win 11 games, and the Pack probably gets 9. Green Bay has a good team but you have to think they are going to stumble at times this year so why not gamble that it will happen early in the season.

I didn't realize you were that stacked in assistant coaches. Too bad the organization didn't promote from within, sounds like they had a lot of good prospects ( i guess hindsight is always 20/20). I am really surprised that they did not try to trade up to get Keith Rivers LB out of USC, he would of been a great fit in saints defense as he played in a very similar type of defense at USC. I think he would be better than getting Sed Ellis. Both should be good NFL players but i think Keith Rivers wouuld more of an immediate impact.

I guess we are in agreement with teh 3-4 scheme.

My hometown team is the browns as i am from cleveland. Believe me i get sooo much shit for it as i live in downtown pittsburgh because of school. Cleveland was in a similar situation defensivly not too long ago but with the regime change came the 3-4 scheme and i am very happy with it. It hasn't been that successful yet but it has been getting better over time. I believe that the defense will be much improved this year, but then again i am a big fan so you shouldn't put too much faith into anything i say about the browns, like how i think they'll win week 1. Who knows...i hope i do as i have my tickets already.

I love football talk, it makes me not think about America's Naptime sport baseball.

11 seems a little high for a team that has an unproven QB. I think it goes minny, chicago, GB, then detroit.

Untiil Rodgers shows me something i can not assume him being a forgone conclusion that he's going to be successful in the NFL. The GB defense is really good and they do have a very stable running game. Hopefully the coahc in GB dosen't put too much on his shoulders and treats him like cowher treated roethlisburger his first year, just have him make a very small amount of throws. Just tell rodgers that he dosen't have win it, he just can't lose it.
 
You can't expect Rogers to duplicate Favre's 2007 year. Green Bay is good, but they simply won't be as strong as last year.

I agree they won't go 13-3 again; Rogers doesn't have to duplicate Favre's 2007 though, since the rest of the team is young and will improve. They still have the most overrall talent in the division, top to bottom of the roster. The fact that Minny has an unproven QB is undeniable, but Minny has a great OL, a promising young star in Peterson, and a strong D. With these attributes, the Vikings should be able to control the clock and grind down teams. Remember, the Ravens won a Superbowl with Trent Dilfer taking the snaps. It was because J Lewis was running the ball well behind a good OL and the defense was dominant.

The place to fade the Vikings this season will be games where they can fall behind early. With no proven QB and having to make up a deficit, Minny could be in trouble if they fall behind early and often. My favorite spot to fade Minny this season will be when Minny's opponent has the lead and has a decent defense, meaning they can hold a lead (a.k.a. not the Saints of last yr). I will also look to bet Minny when they are up at half against poor offensive (passing) teams, as AP can run the clock down and the Vikings' D should hold opponents in check.

You're seriously not comparing the Vikings defense to the most dominant defense in the NFL since the '85 Bears, are you?

Vikes QB Jackson isn't unproven...he sucks. Who are there WR's? Their passing game will one of the worst in the NFL in a league where you almost HAVE to throw the ball to win (unless you have a defense like the 2000 Ravens).

I would bet a large some of money that GB finishes ahead of Minnesota this year. We'll see...

No, I'm not. I also don't think the Vikings win the SB like the Ravens did. I was just offering a comparison to a lesser extent.

1st off everyone is so high on Aaron Rodger's, this guy played what one half of football and looked really good against Dallas. Lets throw him out there for a full season and then lets praise him

Green Bay lost there heart and soul, the identity of there team, and rumors I heard yesterday is that Brian Grant is going to hold out. Guy had 4 good games last year.

Another rumor I heard is that they are going after Jason Taylor. I can't see JT playing in GB. He has been open about this being his last year. I don't think he finishes it with GB.

Minny on the other hand went out and straight up got players this off season. Jared Allen are biggest pick-up is exactly what this defense needed. Are linebackers are solid, are D-line is solid now, picking up Mdu Williams, and drafting a safety in the draft also improves our secondary.

We look great on paper, and are biggest ? will be T-Jack. This is his 3rd full year, 2nd as a full time starter. With a few more weapons on Offense he could be mediocre.

Basically what I'm trying to say is Minnesota is going to surprise some people this year. Barring any major injuries we should win (gulp) 10 games.

One side note I believe GB is 0-4 when retiring a major players jersey.

Week 1 lines that look interesting are:

Houston +7
Buffalo Pick
Carolina +10
Baltimore Pick

I really, really like that Carolina line. I think Carolina will be quite a bit better this year and historically John Fox as a dog is a very good bet, last year it was not too good, but the qbs they were throwing out there each week were so terrible.

I would say Carolina is the best on the board, Buffalo 2nd, and Houston third.

Should be able to flat bet those 3 and go 2-1 or greater.

I am showing lines of Carolina +10 at The Greek and at WSEX; 9.5 at Bookmaker. I am still waiting to bet week 1 lines, but certainly Carolina +10 looks good to me. San Diego made a nice playoff run last year, but I still do not fully believe in this Norv Turner led team. Carolina with Delhomme should have enough at the qb spot to play competitively as a dog. Getting +10 in a week 1 game where the head coach has a solid dog record looks good to me.
