***National Championship--Clemson vs Alabama--Discussion***

I think Lane just wants the credentials so he can take some young ladies behind the scenes of the game. Doubt he wants to coach

We at least have two really good teams playing. Oklahoma probably better than both right now if they were to play but they were rightly kept out of the playoff.

Just hope for a good game.

Strongly disagree with the bolded but you are right in that they did not deserve to be in the playoff based on their regular season body of work so it's a moot point

I think this will be a great game. Part of the issue with teams playing Bama is that their heads are already spinning before the game kicks off. Clemson not only has the players to beat Bama. As or even more importantly, they have zero fear of them and actually want to play Bama really badly.

This is setting up a lot like how it was for Alabama in 2009 after losing to Florida in 2008. The goal all season was to get another crack at Florida, and when they got there, we were ready.

That was the oddest thing I've read. Even more bizarre then Wilkins checking his oil

Alabama LT Cam Robinson on Clemson players being touchy-feely: "They better not try me like that. That's all I got to say."

Boulware, the team’s outspoken linebacker and defensive leader, was asked about Wilkins’ actions Wednesday by Tiger Illustrated. He didn’t mince words.
“People are trying to say sexual assault?” he said. “People that say that have either never played football, have never been in a locker room … I know there’s going to be that one person: ‘Well I played football and I never did that.’ You either sucked at football, you had no friends in the locker room, or you were the person that went in the bathroom stall to go change because you were scared to shower with the team.”
Boulware also said the “people freaking out” about Wilkins’ actions were “trying to divert the fact that we beat [Ohio State] by 31 points or that we beat [South Carolina] by 49 points.” South Carolina is Clemson’s biggest rival.
Wilkins, for his part, has called what he did a “silly moment,” while Boulware said what Wilkins did was not out of the ordinary for Clemson. Just that it was clearly visible to a large audience watching at home.
Boulware will concede that Wilkins went too far (“about four fingers deep”). He said the rest of the team has been making fun of the sophomore defensive tackle because of how much it’s blown up.
“Nobody has done it as aggressive as Christian did,” Boulware said. “We try to be a little more discreet about it and poke somebody. He definitely grabbed a handful.”
Clemson coach Dabo Swinney said his defensive tackle was “being goofy.” Wilkins made a public apology to ESPN after the blowout and said he shook hands with Samuel following the game.

So now we know after all these years why Woody Hayes punched that Clemson player....shit probably been going on for decades at Clemson.

i laffed. enjoy the party down there DS!

Leaving at 2:00AM

Got a house on the water in Tierra Verde tomorrow AM through Tuesday. Gonna party it up, fish a bunch and go to all the media shit. Win or lose, I intend to have a blast

So, can anyone compare and contrast the Ole Miss and Clemson offensive schemes and tendencies? Why were the Rebels able to have even more offensive success this year after scoring 43 and beating the Tide last year?

IMO - look at the QB that have beat Bama in past years - Garcia, Manziel, Knight, Wallace, Kelly. All of these guys are middle fingers up attitude guys that are capable of making brilliant plays and can also just be miserable and lose tons of games they have no business losing because they are forcing balls. You gotta just say screw it against Bama and take risks with your big receivers against corners that are gonna be in single/man. I think Watson did that last year, without a big WR, and is capable of assuming that similar mentality. All of those guys had both big WR and a gunslinger mentality. Difference being is for majority of Bama's dynasty run has been without being able to rush the passer - that's a recent development as Bama changed recruiting strategy to combat the HUNH.

From SportsInsights.com....spread still seems steady overall but has actually risen at Pinnacle from +6 to +7. Hmmm...

So Bama with an improved pass rush sacks Kelly three times this year compared to twice last year. Pressure that doesn't result in a sack should be reflected in the pass numbers (incompletions, interceptions, lower yard per pass because of checkdowns and less time to let deep patterns develop) and holding penalties. Kelly threw for 421 yards completing 65% of 40 passes this year. Factor in the sacks (3 for -25) and holding penalties (1 for 10, which negated a 20-yard completion on 3rd-and-9), and that's still 44 pass plays for 386 yards, or 8.8 yards per pass play with no INTs.

We really can't say it's a fluke when it's done by a team that had beaten Bama the two previous years and therefore must have had Bama's full attention.

Back out that 75-yard fluke TD pass by Kelly in last year's game, and Kelly and Watson have combined to go 73-120 for 1092 yards (9.1 yards per pass) with 9 TDs and 1 INT this year and last.

I'm looking for reasons why I should ignore or discount what Kelly did, whether it's a different skill set for him vs. Watson, or different supporting personnel, or schemes. or injuries to Bama defensive players in those games or whatever. It's just hard for me to ignore the fact the one QB who torched Alabama this year is the guy who beat out Watson at Clemson.

I think the fluke plays came in last year's Bama/Ole Miss game. I don't remember there being as much weird stuff this year. I don't think what they have done has been a fluke - like I said I attribute it to having big WR and an accurate risk taker at QB that gets hot. Kelly threw a few balls this year that I remember that were seriously picture perfect, perfect coverage and he just threw a few Tom Brady balls. The two NFL QB that Bama faced this year, Kelly and Allen, hit huge chunk plays and threw for tons of yardage. It's entirely possible it happens again in this game or it's possible that the questions I've had about Clemson's OL for a couple years now and Watson's decision making lead to a real bad day for the Clemson offense.

Personally feel tOSU made Clemson look a lot better than they actually are. Will be on Bama pretty big.

Clemson has covered its last 6 bowl/playoff games, all as a dog (with five straight-up wins). And all those dog covers came against the elite: LSU, Ohio State (twice), Oklahoma (twice), and Alabama.

And I'm starting to sense that Bama fans are relatively disinterested this year. Is that right? If so, does that feeling extend to the team and staff? Last year, they had watched FSU and OSU win a couple championships. This year are they fat and happy? Not Hurts, obviously, but he'll have two more chances at least.

Could care less about the fanbase, but no team makes a national championship game and is disinterested in any sense of the word. Any team coached by Nick Saban sure as hell isn't going to lose focus or be disinterested...if it came down to a head coaches fight to the death for the Title Dabo Swinney's wife would shortly be a widow.

I've seen nothing to think that either the fans or players are disinterested.

I am warming to Clemson. I already have a two team teaser (first leg in with Wisconsin) that has bama at minus a half pt for the title game. So I was looking at possibly taking Clemson ML, and not exactly freerolling since i paid for and won a bet already in the teaser ... but more of a way to get off of that teaser. The problem is the ML is just 210.

I think this version of Bama is just so much more offensively challenged than last years team. So if Clemson (who I think was better on both sides of the ball last year than this year - grats clemson fans, you have a real program) produces at all offensively, I don't see why they cannot compete against the number and win 1 of 3 times. Clemson D shut down some pretty good rush offenses this year ... I think Jackson and Co. the only ones that went off on them, though FSU probably the most similar to bama as far as oline and talent and they had a decent day running too.

I liked Bama based a lot on my eye test but in reality, clemson has competitive numbers to bama playing fairly equal schedules and those kids have wanted this game exact game all year. And I hate the Kiffin stuff. It feels like a built in excuse incoming.

Feel like Clem might rip off the win....
Bama D is so good, just have a feeling on the offense....
Haven't pulled the trigger yet, but something feels weird

Took under first half. If the game gets to the total, I just think it comes from desperation or head hanging and not normal play. Maybe a special teams return when legs are tired second half. But I don't think we see either team going up and down the field on the other, particularly early. I do have some concern that Bama has some first quarter success if they are doing anything different at all with Sark calling plays.... but they are not making any scheme changes, just play calling changes. Just no way to implement scheme changes at this point. Hoping plays get in a little slower for Bama early too .... maybe sark will have to repeat the play because his speech is slurred. My other fear is Watson being aggressive. That can hurt the total both directions. But I like the two defensive lines to make it hard to have any consistency for either offense. And Washington just gave a blue print to Clemson .. make Hurts beat you with his arm....

should be a good game which I will probably miss.

I tend to think this game will be a lower scoring first half.

25.5 - I don't see it going over-

Bana defense can slow down Clemson and Bana offense will run and get stuffed a bit-

mike Williams catch prop should go over. Watson looks for him a lot.

Very hard game to cap-

Clemson sure looks like they could Win but it's concerning that everybody is crowning them champions much like everyone was saying giants will beat Green Bay.

Seems like Bama has become the underdog and is being disrespected.

Last year Coker vs Watson. This year hurts replaces Coker - advantage Clemson?

Last time Bama was being underestimated they whipped Lsu in the bowl final. Everyone was saying Lsu beat them 9-6 and was talking about the 9-6 result.

In the final Lsu and Jordan Jefferson didn't cross midfield.

I wonder if Bana defense will play hyper???

2 games- Ole miss had success vs bama with their offense.

Also Texas a m and their receivers were getting open and were competitive.

Clemson sure looks like ole miss and Texas a m in terms of receivers and spread attack.

In big games it seems Watson shows up but then he loses to Pitts struggles like crazy vs nc state and Louisville.
