Michigan State has called a press conference for 1:30 ET Wednesday to discuss its football coaching situation.

The Spartans started the season 3-0 under head coach John L. Smith, but have gone just 1-5 since. That slump started with a 40-37 loss to Notre Dame in which Michigan State squandered a 16-point fourth quarter lead.
That was followed by a 23-20 home loss to Illinois, a team now 2-7 on the season. Blowout losses to Big Ten powers Michigan and Ohio State came next before a stunning comeback in a 41-38 win at Northwestern.

Most recently, the Spartans were drubbed 46-21 at Indiana last Saturday.

wow....that may change things on this game...

One of the worst coaches in Division 1-A football, IMO. I'm also surprised he lasted this long. I don't know how, but with John L. Smith, the Spartans simply cannot coach with a lead. I can't recall any team in recent past that has blown as many games when they're up at halftime. It tells me a few things...

1. John L. Smith does not make adequate halftime adjustments when it comes to coaching/strategy.

2. Michigan State players no longer have faith in their head coach & his assistants, who have shown a consistent ineptitude when it comes to playcalling in crucial situations.

3. Michigan State fans/community are tired of this era of Sparty football. They need a new face to turn the program around and have the players believing again. The Spartans have plenty of talent, so this bodes well for whoever takes over the reigns.

I don't think he's nearly as bad as everyone makes him out to be. He won at Utah Freakin State for God's sakes, then he built the Louisville program up to what it is today; Petrino just kept his foot on the gas.

He'll get another chance in a few years, a la Erickson, and he'll be back at big-time school in 6-7 years...

You're no fun Rex...lol.

I do think the reason he gets so much heat is how the L'ville to MSU thing went down..

He can't shake that..

Oh God. Talk about stealing money betting against U of L in that Mobile Bowl. I think they opened 3 fave and closed 3 dog, blew 38-15 against the Thundering Turd. Can't remember the last time I made that much money when I had so little (you could say I bet more than I could afford to lose hahaha)...

Just what this team needs....a lame duck coach...lmfao

Michigan State coach Smith resigning after season

With three games remaining in another disappointing season, Michigan State has decided that John L. Smith will not return to coach the 2007 season.

University president Lou Anna K. Simon is expected to make the announcement at a 1:30 p.m. ET news conference on campus.

Smith will coach the Spartans through the end of this season, including a bowl game. Michigan State, 4-5 this season, must win two of its three remaining games against Purdue, Minnesota and Penn State, to qualify for a postseason invitation.

The university will buy out the remaining two years on his contract. His annual salary is $1.35 million. However, Smith's buyout clause is $1.5 million.

"Coach Smith deserves to coach the rest of this season because he will coach with his heart, just like he always has," Joel Ferguson, Vice Chairperson of Michigan State's Board of Trustees, told ESPN's Joe Schad. "We have respect for him and we hope he takes us to a bowl game. What we need here is more players. What we need is better recruits. We don't make excuses. What we need is more depth and more players."

Smith turned around a moribund program in 2003, his first season, taking the Spartans to an 8-5 record and an Alamo Bowl berth. However, that has been his only winning season. His last three teams have been dogged by inconsistency. The Spartans record under Smith is 22-23, including 0-4 marks against Michigan and Ohio State.

The Spartans started the 2006 season 3-0 under Smith, but have gone just 1-5 since. That slump started with a 40-37 loss to Notre Dame on Sep. 23 in which Michigan State squandered a 16-point fourth quarter lead.

That was followed by a 23-20 homecoming loss on Sept. 30 to Illinois, a team that had not won a Big Ten game since 2004. Blowout losses to conference powers Michigan and Ohio State came next before a stunning comeback in a 41-38 win at Northwestern on Oct. 21, a game they trailed 38-3 in the third quarter.

Most recently, the Spartans were drubbed 46-21 at Indiana last Saturday. Michigan State took a 7-0 lead before the Hoosiers scored 46 consecutive points.

I'd put money on MSU now if I was going to play this.

Sparty comes out hard on this one.

I was considering Purdue because MSU just doesn't know how to win but not after this, no way am I losing my money to these clowns like against NorthWestern..

Unless you have a really good feel, stay away..No telling how MSU can play and that means all the difference in the world..

Purdue plays good, MSU plays shit, they win and cover
Purdue plays good, MSU plays good, MSU wins and they will cover
Purdue plays baD, MSU plays bad, who knows what happens
Purdue plays bad, MSU plays good, MSU smokes them..

I jsut think MSU is dogshit, doesn't matter who the coach is, players gave up on this fool after ND and will be happy to collect another check as a fav this weekend..they mailed it in long ago.
