6 Lefties on the Memorial Day mound

Holland-Rangers
Escobar-D'Backs
Quintana-White Sox
Locke-Pirates
Nicolino-Marlins
Wood-Dodgers

Holland

Derek Holland (3-4, 5.21), who is 2-0 with a 1.16 ERA in three starts at Cleveland with the Rangers winning all of them.
The Indians have some hitters who have enjoyed success versus Holland. Carlos Santana is 7 for 18 in this matchup, Jason Kipnis is 5 for 15 and Mike Napoli 4 for 12.
Holland has one of baseball's worst road ERAs at 6.41. The left-hander yielded two runs in 6 2/3 innings of Monday's 2-0 home loss to the Los Angeles Angels.
Texas (29-21) has won seven of nine after seeing Prince Fielder and Mitch Moreland homer in Sunday's 6-2 victory over Pittsburgh.
Fielder ended a career-long homer drought at 34 games with his third of the season. Moreland went deep again after he stopped a 1-for-27 skid with a home run Saturday.

Quintana vs Harvey

Quintana (5-4, 2.22 ERA), whose personal losing streak has come with a 4.19 ERA. The left-hander gave up three runs and five hits with eight strikeouts in Wednesday's 4-3 home loss to Cleveland.
He was given one run of support for a third straight start, which is the same formula that turned him into an under .500 pitcher over the previous two seasons despite a 3.34 ERA.
Quintana has never faced the Mets, but Yoenis Cespedes is 9 for 15 with four home runs, a triple and two doubles against him. Asdrubal Cabrera is 2 for 19.
Harvey (3-7, 6.08) hasn't made it through six innings on his skid. The right-hander has a 10.80 ERA in his last three outings after giving up five runs and eight hits along with three home runs in Tuesday's 7-4 loss in Washington.
one start against the White Sox had no such issues as Harvey gave up a hit and struck out 12 in a shutout on May 7, 2013. He was perfect until an infield single in the seventh inning.
Longtime NL East foe Jimmy Rollins is 5 for 19 with two home runs and two doubles off Harvey.
New York (28-21) will be happy to face anyone other than Clayton Kershaw after Sunday's 4-2 loss in which they managed five hits. Over a 2-3 span, the Mets are batting .172

Wood vs Hammel

Wood (1-3, 4.03) for the opener. The left-hander had his start pushed back three days because of irritation in his left triceps from hitting, though it didn't keep him from striking out a career-high 13 in his last start.
Wood gave up two runs and four hits over six-plus innings in a 3-2 loss at San Diego on May 21. He has a 1.96 ERA and 27 strikeouts in his last three starts, though he is still seeking his first win since April 13.
Wood has a 4.76 ERA in his two career starts against the Cubs, but he held them to two runs in six innings of a 2-0 loss on Aug. 30.

Hammel (6-1, 2.17 ERA) has a 5.00 ERA in 12 career starts against the Dodgers. Chase Utley (5 for 9 with a home run) and Howie Kendrick (7 for 16 with two doubles) have seen him well.
Hammel, though, is off to the best start of his 11-year career. Though he admittedly struggled with command, the right-hander tossed a season-high 7 1/3 innings in Tuesday's 12-3 win over St. Louis and held the Cardinals to a run and four hits.
He will face a lineup that has averaged 5.57 runs during a 6-1 stretch. The Dodgers were mostly stifled in Sunday's 4-2 win over the New York Mets, but Adrian Gonzalez won it with a two-run single in the ninth inning.

Locke vs Nicolino

Locke (3-3, 5.08 ERA) has gone 3-0 with a 3.34 ERA in his other six starts during this solid stretch.
The left-hander might not have to deal with Giancarlo Stanton on Monday night, but he'll try to contain hot-hitting Marcell Ozuna as the Pirates open a four-game road series against the Miami Marlins.
Locke will try to win three consecutive starts for the first time in his six-year career with Pittsburgh (28-21) after giving up four runs over 6 1/3 innings in Wednesday's 5-4 victory over Arizona.
Locke might be able to help the Pirates avoid their first three-game losing streak since dropping four straight from May 1-4. He's 3-0 with a 2.28 ERA in his four starts versus Miami - all Pittsburgh wins - since the start of 2014.

Stanton has gone 7 for 14 with two home runs lifetime when facing Locke, but he's missed the past five games due to soreness in his side. The star slugger took batting practice before Sunday's 7-3 win at Atlanta and is expected to return at some point during this series.
Chris Johnson is 7 for 15 with two homers and Ozuna has gone 4 for 11 in the matchup. Ozuna went 2 for 4 with his 10th long ball Sunday, leaving him with a .488 average over an 11-game hitting streak.
The center fielder also has reached safely in 36 straight games.

Derek Dietrich went 3 for 3 with a home run, double and four RBIs for Miami (26-24), which seeks its second back-to-back wins since May 16. He's gone 12 for 23 over a six-game hitting streak, but won't play in this one after getting hit on the head by a foul ball in his own dugout.

Justin Nicolino (2-2, 4.37) hopes to build on Wednesday's effort in which he snapped a two-game losing streak. He allowed three runs and struck out a season-high six over 5 2/3 innings in a 4-3 win at Tampa Bay.
In his only start versus Pittsburgh, the left-hander gave up two runs despite walking four over six innings in a 2-1 loss Aug. 27. Andrew McCutchen singled and walked twice when facing him in that contest.
Since averaging 8 runs over a five-game winning streak, the Pirates have totaled four in consecutive losses. Starling Marte and Francisco Cervelli had four of the team's eight hits in Sunday's 6-2 loss at Texas.
McCutchen has hit .426 over his last 19 games against the Marlins, while Gregory Polanco is batting .419 with 10 RBIs in his 11 meetings.
Pittsburgh has outscored Miami 44-20 while winning eight of the last nine matchups and has won the season series the last four years.

Escobar

The Diamondbacks will have a new face on the mound to open this series after calling up Edwin Escobar from Triple-A Reno. The 24-year-old left-hander was claimed off waivers from Boston on April 29 after making two relief appearances for the Red Sox in 2014.
He went 2-1 with a 4.68 ERA in five starts at Reno, pitching six shutout innings in his last start. He made three appearances, one start, and had a 3.86 ERA with Triple-A Pawtucket before going on waivers.
Another pitcher was called up to start Sunday's 6-3 win over the Padres. Archie Bradley tossed 7 1/3 solid innings, ending the Diamondbacks' poor pitching stretch.
They posted an 8.57 ERA in their previous five games, surrendering 68 hits - nine of them home runs - in 42 innings.
On Sunday, Arizona scored five runs in the second inning for the second straight day.

Dug myself yet another deep hole yesterday. Time to regroup.

9 Lefties on the hill today

Matz-Mets
Happ-Blue Jays
Sabathia-Yankees
Smyly-Rays
Kazmir-Dodgers
Rodriguez-Red Sox
Santiago-Angels
Surkamp-A's
Corbin-D'Backs

Smyly vs Gee

Smyly 2-6 3.92 hopes he can end that success by building a bit of momentum for himself.
The left-hander had pitched well his previous two starts - allowing four runs in 11 1/3 innings - before getting pounded in Thursday's 9-1 loss to Miami. He gave up five runs and six hits - two home runs - in six innings to suffer his third loss in his last four outings.
'It was just frustrating because I felt like I had pretty good command,' said Smyly. 'Just a couple of bad pitches, a couple curveballs just stayed up. It was just a frustrating outing for me because I thought I could perform better than I did.'
The five-year veteran held a 2.61 ERA and 0.97 WHIP in three starts against Kansas City in 2014, though those were all with Detroit. Smyly is 3-1 with a 2.20 ERA and 1.04 WHIP in five career starts against the Royals, the other two coming in 2012.
Eric Hosmer, Salvador Perez and Omar Infante have each homered off Smyly, though they have just a .206 batting average in a combined 34 at-bats.
Kansas City's only loss in its last seven games came from Gee (1-2, 3.86). The right-hander jumped into Kansas City's rotation earlier this month and looked good in his first two starts, but his Wednesday outing was a disaster.
He was shelled for 10 hits and six runs in four innings of a 7-5 loss at Minnesota, giving up four extra-base hits including three homers.
'It just seemed like when I made a mistake (Wednesday) they really did some damage,' Gee said.
Gee spent the first six years of his career with the New York Mets and has never faced Tampa Bay.

Happ vs Sabathia

Happ 6-2 3.20 who gave up eight runs in two innings of a 13-2 home loss to Tampa Bay on May 16, has limited his last two opponents to four runs and six hits in 14 1/3 innings.
That includes a run and three hits in seven innings of Thursday's 3-1 win at Yankee Stadium, though he walked three for a second straight.
"I think that was a big game," Happ told MLB's official website. "Nice to get the series here. We're going to face them again next week, so we have to keep grinding."
It was his second win over the Yankees in as many attempts this season and third in as many starts against them to push his record to 5-2 with a 4.15 ERA in 11 starts. That's gotten substantially better in the five since his last defeat to New York, going 3-0 with a 2.23 mark while giving up three earned runs once.
Alex Rodriguez (0 for 14) Mark Teixeira (2 for 11) and Brian McCann (3 for 21) have struggled against Happ, but Carlos Beltran is 9 for 30 with three home runs.

Sabathia (3-3, 2.83) missed time earlier this month but has returned and put together another strong two starts to add to an already encouraging season. The veteran gave up two unearned runs and two hits in seven innings of the loss to Happ and is 2-1 with a 0.45 ERA in his last three starts.
"He's learning what he can and can't do now with lesser velocity," McCann said. "When you have a mindset like he's got, he's going to succeed no matter what he's doing. That's why he's one of the best pitchers of this generation. His career has been amazing."
If he's able to keep things positive for one more start, he's going to enter June without having given up four runs in a start. That just hasn't been the case too often lately against the Blue Jays.
Sabathia gave up four or five runs in his previous five starts in the series, going 2-4 with a 3.83 ERA in the last six meetings with Toronto.
Jose Bautista (4 for 34 with 10 strikeouts), Justin Smoak (3 for 15), Russell Martin (3 for 15) and Michael Saunders (1 for 17 with nine strikeouts) have rarely gotten in on the fun.

Kazmir vs Arrieta

Arrieta (9-0, 1.72 ERA) had a remarkable 0.55 ERA during an 18-start stretch prior to posting a decent 3.24 ERA in the last four. For the first time in 30 starts, the right-hander gave up more than three runs Wednesday - allowing four and seven hits over five innings of a 9-8 win at St. Louis.
"He has not pitched as well as he can yet," manager Joe Maddon told MLB's official website. "You'll see the day when he goes out with that fastball command and it'll be the eighth inning with 92 pitches and it'll be a good day."
Still, Arrieta can become the majors' first 10-game winner after Chicago (35-14) won his 23rd consecutive start - matching Atlanta's record behind Kris Medlen in 2012.
"That's baseball," said Arrieta, who also looks to become the first in franchise history to go 10-0 since Jim McCormick in 1886. "You can go out and give up one run and get the loss. We'll ride it out and see where it goes."
Maddon is grateful for the chance to witness all the success surrounding Arrieta.
"He's on a nice run now, a historic run," said Maddon, whose club has won six in a row after dropping eight of 12. "I will take a moment to sit back and think I've been watching this the whole time."
Maddon certainly enjoyed watching Arrieta on Aug. 30 at Dodger Stadium, when he struck out 12 in a 2-0 victory for the first of his two no-hitters over an 11-start span.
Chase Utley, who fanned for the final out of that contest, is 0 for 10 against Arrieta. Adrian Gonzalez is hitless with a walk in his last 11 plate appearances against him.
'We'll just go out there and try to put some at-bats and hits together,' Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said.
Los Angeles (27-25) managed one hit - Justin Turner's pop fly lost in the sun in the first inning - of Monday's 2-0 defeat. After Jason Hammel left with a cramped hamstring prior to the start of the third inning, four Cubs relievers did not allow a baserunner the rest of the way.

Facing the Cubs for the first time since 2010, Scott Kazmir (4-3, 4.84) improved to 2-0 in his last three starts after allowing a run and striking out a season-high 12 in six innings of Wednesday's 3-1 victory over Cincinnati.
'My rhythm is getting a lot better with all my pitches," the left-hander said. "That's the key to be able to have that fastball command. I was able to go in and out and use my changeup off the plate.'
Each of Kazmir's last two wins came at home, where he has a 3.56 ERA despite going 2-3. He's 2-0 in five road starts but owns an 8.02 ERA in the last four.
Ben Zobrist is 1 for 7 in the regular season against Kazmir, but has hit safely in a career high-tying 16 straight games and is batting .458 in his last 23.
Dexter Fowler is 1 for 9 against Kazmir, but could have a chance to improve on those numbers after sitting Monday with a sore heel.

Matz

Matz (7-1, 2.36 ERA) has yielded six runs in 48 innings during the streak, becoming the first Mets hurler since Tom Seaver in 1969 to allow two or less in seven consecutive winning starts. The 25-year-old was in top form in Wednesday's 2-0 victory at Washington, holding the Nationals to four singles and striking out seven over a career-high eight innings.
'I think he thinks he belongs here,' manager Terry Collins said. 'I think he knows he's part of a very, very good pitching staff. We count on him when he goes out there and I think he picks his game up.'
Matz faces a Chicago lineup that's receiving little from its heart, with Todd Frazier in a 1-for-22 slump and Jose Abreu having gone 11 straight games without an RBI.

Hamels

Hamels (5-1, 3.34 ERA) surrendered six runs in 4 2/3 innings of a 9-1 loss to Pittsburgh on Friday. It was his shortest outing since July 19 with Philadelphia and his first loss since his second outing with the Rangers on Aug. 7.
Hamels had been 7-0 with a 3.87 ERA in 13 career outings in Arlington including one victory over the Rangers. He gave up eight hits, two home runs, walked a pair and hit two more batters while getting denied Texas' franchise record for consecutive victories, a mark he will instead share with Bobby Witt from 1990.
Hamels had the second-longest winning streak in the majors behind Jake Arrieta of the Chicago Cubs.
'"If you pitch long enough, you're going to have games like this,"Hamels said. 'You're going to have good games, bad games, a ton of games in between. You just kind of move forth and try to plug away again.'
Though Hamels is 3-0 with a 1.63 ERA in four road starts, he has lost both of his career outings against the Indians. He was rocked in both, allowing a combined 14 hits and 11 runs in 10 innings in starts from 2007 and '13.

Lester

Lester (5-3, 2.48 ERA) lasted just 2 2/3 innings May 21 at San Francisco, where he allowed five runs, six hits and three walks in a 4-3 defeat. Six days later, he yielded an earned run and struck out seven in 6 1/3 innings of Friday's 6-2 home victory over Philadelphia.
"I wasn't worried about my start (against San Francisco) at all," Lester told MLB's official website.
Lester lowered his ERA to 2.29 at Wrigley Field, where he's fanned 45 and walked 11 in six starts.
He faced the Dodgers (28-25) at home and on the road last season but lost both times, giving up nine runs and 12 hits in 10-plus innings.

Niese vs Conley

Niese (5-2, 4.42 ERA) has been great over his last three, going 2-0 with a 1.89 ERA after allowing one run in six innings of Friday's 9-1 win at Texas. He posted a 7.36 ERA while giving up seven homers over his previous four outings.
'I've been working hard between games, and it's been showing in games,' Niese said. 'I know I have it in me, but in my sides in between games I was able to work on the mechanical part of it.'
The left-hander allowed another homer against the Rangers, though, and the 12 he's surrendered are among the most in the majors.
'He's working and developing,' manager Clint Hurdle said. 'The delivery's repeating itself. He's physically getting in a good place.'
Stanton homered off him last season when the Marlins roughed up Niese on May 30, but Niese bounced back with seven strong innings in his last start against them Aug. 4 while with the New York Mets.
The Marlins slugger is hitting .414 with four homers off Niese, and Dee Gordon (5 for 10), Marcell Ozuna (5 for 12) and Chris Johnson (10 for 27) also have had success against him.
Stanton, though, is still dealing with a sore right side and didn't start for the seventh straight game Tuesday. Manager Don Mattingly said he would've been available to pinch-hit, leaving open the possibility that he could be back in the starting lineup to face Niese.
"We'll go through the same process (Wednesday), batting practice again," Mattingly said. "If that goes good again we'll see where he's at."

Miami (27-25) had dropped three of its previous four prior to Tuesday's 3-1 victory as Ichiro Suzuki had two hits to tie Sam Crawford for 31st on MLB's all-time list, 37 short of 3,000.
J.T. Realmuto went 3 for 4 and Christian Yelich's RBI single in the seventh put the Marlins ahead for good.
The Pirates (29-22) scored two runs or fewer for the third time in four games after exploding for 10 runs and 14 hits while winning Monday's series opener. They were held scoreless until Gregory Polanco's sacrifice fly in the ninth.
Pittsburgh looks to bounce back against Adam Conley (3-3, 4.15), who continues to have control issues.
Conley's average of 14.19 baserunners allowed per nine innings is among the highest in the majors. He walked a career-high seven in a loss to Washington on May 22, then walked another and hit three batters over 4 1/3 innings while getting a no-decision in the Marlins' 4-2 loss to Atlanta on Friday.
The left-hander led 2-0 going into the fifth, then gave up two runs on four straight hits that chased him.
"At this point, (he's) got to execute," Mattingly said. "You've got to get the ball where you want it, and make sure you're getting the ball to your spots. If you don't get your spots, and get into bad counts, you're going to give up some hits."

Duffy

Duffy 0-0 3.23 will be making a fourth straight start after 16 appearances out of the bullpen, and his longest outing of the season began well but finished poorly Friday. He retired the first 16 batters he faced on 59 pitches before giving up five runs on his next 17, lasting 5 1/3 innings and getting a no-decision in the Royals' 7-5 win over the Chicago White Sox.
The left-hander didn't give up a run while allowing five hits in 7 1/3 innings over his previous two starts.
'That's probably the best (and) worst game I've ever had,' Duffy said.
Duffy went more than four years between starts against the Rays before giving up two runs and seven hits in five innings of Kansas City's 3-2 loss Aug. 30.
Brandon Guyer is 3 for 3 with a homer off Duffy, but he went 0 for 5 on Tuesday as the Rays lost for the ninth time in 11 tries. Guyer is 2 for 17 over his last four.

7 Lefties on the mound today

Bumgarner-Giants
Keuchel-Astros
Chen-Marlins
Uras-Dodgers
Moore-Rays
Miley-Seattle
Boyd-Tigers

Keuchel vs Greinke

Keuchel (3-6, 5.58 ERA) won the 2015 Cy Young after going 20-8 with a 2.48 ERA while leading Houston (25-29) to the playoffs. He's been downright bad in stretches this season, though, and has allowed at least five runs five times, including when he gave up seven in a loss to Texas on May 22.
The left-hander got it together Saturday and won for the first time since April 15 after allowing two runs in seven innings of a 4-2 win over the Los Angeles Angels. Keuchel didn't walk any for the first time in seven starts and retired the final 18 hitters he faced.
"I knew it was going to turn around because I'm a pretty big competitor and I don't like to lose," Keuchel said. "Losing five (decisions) in row didn't sit too well and I knew I was going to turn it around if I just stuck with it.
Manager A.J. Hinch figured a performance like that was coming, too, but probably not after Keuchel allowed back-to-back homers in the first inning.

Greinke (6-3, 4.71) didn't expect his poor start to continue either and has won his last three starts. He held San Diego to one run through five innings Saturday and picked up an 8-7 victory despite giving up three more runs in his sixth and final inning and ended May with a 3.82 ERA in five outings.
The right-hander allowed at least four earned runs for the fifth time already this season, though, after doing so just twice all of last year, when he led the majors with a 1.66 ERA and finished a very close second to the Chicago Cubs' Jake Arrieta in the Cy Young voting while with the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Houston dealt him one of his three losses on Aug. 22 when he gave up three runs in seven innings. Jose Altuve has had the most success of any Astro against Greinke, going 8 for 15 with a homer, a triple and a double.
Altuve enters this matchup riding a seven-game hitting streak that includes him going 10 for 20 over his last four after finishing with two hits in Wednesday's 5-4 win. George Springer homered with two outs in the bottom of the 11th inning after Arizona (23-32) tied it with a three-run ninth.
Houston has won eight of nine, and each victory during its five-game winning streak has come on the road.
The Diamondbacks have dropped seven of their last nine.

Bumgarner

Bumgarner (6-2, 2.12 ERA) had a 4.50 ERA through his first three outings but hasn't allowed more than two earned runs in any of the eight since, including his last defeat April 20. He's gone 5-0 with a 1.28 ERA during the club's unbeaten streak with him on the mound after allowing a run in six innings of Saturday's 10-5 win at Colorado.
He took a no-decision but escaped unscathed in the sixth after loading the bases with no one out. Bumgarner has allowed three runs with a 0.82 WHIP in 29 1/3 innings over his last four outings.
"I can't say enough about what Bum did. What a gutty effort," manager Bruce Bochy said. "He willed his way through that sixth inning. What a jam he was in."
Bumgarner has been fantastic against the Braves in recent years, too. He's 5-0 with a 2.09 ERA and 50 strikeouts in 38 2/3 innings over his last six starts against them after going 7 1/3 innings of a 6-1 victory Aug. 5 in Atlanta.

Uras-Dodgers

Dodgers will again hand the ball to top prospect Julio Urias (0-0, 10.13), whose second career start comes against another NLCS participant after he debuted against the New York Mets on Friday.
The 19-year-old left-hander, who became the first teenage pitcher to start in the majors since Felix Hernandez in 2005, allowed three runs and five hits in 2 2/3 innings of a 6-5 loss at Citi Field.
"For him to make his debut on that stage in New York, there's really no bigger stage," manager Dave Roberts said. "And I thought that he passed. I think he handled himself well. And to follow that up with arguably the best team in baseball, we're kind of checking some boxes early for Julio.

I don't understand the rationale on some of these series plays. You're getting +145 and you have to win two games for the bet to cash. You can bet KC today at +147 and you only have to win once. If they win today, great, you already got paid. If they lose you can bet them again tomorrow at + odds and then roll that onto the 3rd game for a much better than +145 payoff or stop and take a small profit still having had to win only once.

kdog

I just feel that KC will sweep the Tribe thus I'll get ++ odds all around ... I had to take a stand somewhere, the way I've been going just think I can make up a bit of ground... Tribe aren't that good KC hitting there best stride.. Fingers crossed

7 Lefties on the hill today

Gonzalez-Nats
Price-Boston
Liriano-Pirates
Rodon-White Sox
Rusin-Rockies
Pomeranz-Padres
Finnegan-Reds

Price

Price (7-1, 5.11 ERA), however, limited Toronto to two runs over 6 1/3 innings Sunday in his first start at Rogers Centre since helping the Blue Jays reach the ALCS in October as the Red Sox salvaged a 5-3, 11-inning win.
The left-hander allowed two runs over seven innings while striking out nine in a 4-2 home win over Toronto on April 16. Ezequiel Carrera is 3 for 5 off Price this season, while Bautista is hitting .345 with six homers in 55 career at-bats.
Since posting a 6.75 ERA over his first seven starts, the five-time All-Star has rediscovered his ace form by going 3-0 with a 2.63 mark in his last four.
"This is a very tough lineup to navigate through, one through nine," Price told the league's official website on Sunday. "So for me, I wanted to continue with what I have done my past couple starts and give us a chance to win."

Gonzalez vs Finnegan

Gio Gonzalez (3-3), who is coming off a horrid two-start stretch in which he's allowed 13 earned runs over 9 2/3 innings.
After allowing 10 hits - three of them homers - and seven runs in a 7-1 loss to the Mets on May 23, he gave up six runs and six hits in a 9-4 loss to St. Louis on Saturday. It was the first time in his career he allowed six earned runs in back-to-back starts, and they ballooned his ERA from 1.86 to 3.57.

The Reds (19-35) will hand to ball to Brandon Finnegan (1-4, 4.14 ERA) looking to end an eight-game losing streak in his starts. Cincinnati hasn't won when he pitches since he earned his only victory in a 9-8 win over the Cardinals on April 16.

Rodon

Rodon (2-4, 4.24) has pitched much better over his last three, posting a 2.55 ERA to bring his season mark down from 4.99. He allowed one run in five innings and was in line for the win before the bullpen imploded.
The left-hander faced Detroit once as a rookie last year, giving up four runs and eight hits in five innings. Ian Kinsler and J.D. Martinez homered off Rodon in that contest.

Liriano

Liriano (4-4, 4.63 ERA) had a rough outing Sunday, though, giving up five runs in six innings of a 6-2 loss to Texas. He allowed two homers to left-handed hitters in the same game for the first time in his career, both coming in the fourth after he cruised through the first three innings.
The left-hander also walked four after issuing five free passes in his prior start.

6 Lefties on the hill today, including Kershaw & Sale

Kershaw-Dodgers
Sale-White Sox
Escobar-D'Backs
Nicolino-Marlins
Perez-Rangers
Locke-Pirates

Kershaw

After giving up four hits and striking out 10 through 7 2/3 innings Sunday night against the New York Mets, Kershaw (7-1, 1.56 ERA) was visibly frustrated when Roberts asked for the ball with a runner on first and the Dodgers (29-27) clinging to a one-run lead.
The next batter tied the game with a double and left Kershaw with a no-decision before Los Angeles pulled out a 4-2 victory.

Kershaw who finished 5-0 with a 0.91 ERA in six May starts, fanned 10 against the Braves (16-38) on April 21 and allowed only one run despite giving up a season-high 10 hits in eight innings before the Dodgers won 2-1 in 10.
He's 3-0 with an 0.73 ERA in his last five starts against Atlanta, including two outings in the 2013 NLDS, and has never lost in nine starts versus the Braves.

Sale

Sale 9-1, 2.29 ERA allowed six runs in 3 1/3 innings of a 6-2 home loss to Cleveland on May 24. He looked much better giving up two in the first of seven he lasted before Chicago's bullpen blew a one-run lead in Sunday's 5-4 loss at Kansas City.
Pelfrey is winless in eight career starts opposite the White Sox (29-26), Pelfrey went 0-1 with a 5.40 ERA in three against them last year with Minnesota.

Perez

Perez is 3-1 with a 2.23 ERA in six starts in Arlington, and he is 6-1 with a 2.15 ERA in his last 11 home starts dating to Aug. 2.
Perez (3-4, 3.12) picked up his first two wins of May in his final two starts of the month, allowing two runs in 12 innings of a 4-1 win over the Los Angeles Angels on May 24 and Sunday's 6-2 victory over Pittsburgh.
The left-hander had been 0-2 for the month despite a 2.59 ERA in four starts, and he dropped that number to 2.23. Perez's run support average of 2.85 is one of the lowest in baseball.
Perez has a history of getting rattled in jams, though he escaped an inning with a runner at third and no outs in each of his final two May starts.
'Now I'm more comfortable with runners on base and no outs,' said Perez. 'I just need to throw my pitch where I want and not try to do too much.'
Perez has held left-handed hitters to a .152 average, and opponents are hitting .188 off him with runners in scoring position.
He held the Mariners to two hits and two runs in six innings of a 10-2 loss in his opening start on April 5.
Kyle Seager is 10 for 22 with three homers against Perez, while Nelson Cruz is 3 for 4 with a home run.

Locke

Coming off his first career shutout, the left-hander will try to play the role of stopper for the struggling Pirates as he looks to win a career-high fourth consecutive start Saturday against the visiting Los Angeles Angels.
It seems like Locke has been pitching to keep his rotation spot for much of his career. This season has been no different as speculation has grown as to when Pittsburgh will promote prospects Jameson Taillon and Tyler Glasnow.
Locke (4-3, 4.33 ERA) was a sure candidate to be replaced with a 5.45 ERA after allowing six runs in 5 1/3 innings in an 8-2 loss at Wrigley Field on May 14. However, he's since solidified his footing with three straight wins.
Locke has posted a 2.42 ERA over that span after tossing a three-hitter Monday in a 10-0 win at Miami. He only struck out one but never threw more than 16 pitches in an inning and coaxed the Marlins into 13 groundouts.

8 Lefties on the hill today

Holland-Rangers
Santiago-Angels
Smyly-Rays
Rodriguez-Red Sox
Sabathia-Yankees
Quintana-White Sox
Kazmir-Dodgers
Corbin-D'Backs

Holland

Holland (4-4, 4.78) hopes to benefit from another surge after posting a 2.41 ERA in his last three starts. He earned his first win since April 30 on Monday when he allowed one run over six innings in a 9-2 victory at Cleveland.
The left-hander is 10-4 with a 3.38 ERA in 18 starts against the Mariners. He limited them to four hits over 6 2/3 innings in an 8-0 road victory April 12.
Norichika Aoki is 5 for 10 in the matchup, Adam Lind has gone 6 for 15 with a home run and Robinson Cano is batting .375 with two homers in 40 at-bats.

Rangers have averaged 7.1 runs and batted .313 with 15 homers in their last nine games. They've also won 11 of 14 to move two games ahead of Seattle (31-24).

Quintana

Quintana (5-5, 2.13 ERA) enters the finale of this three-game set having lost four consecutive starts, though he's received just three runs of support during the skid. He was on the wrong end of a 1-0 result Monday against the New York Mets after surrendering Neil Walker's solo homer in the seventh inning.
"If we could score, he'd have a better record," manager Robin Ventura said. "Everybody would know his name."
Quintana now faces an opponent he went winless against in five 2015 meetings while recording a 5.59 ERA. The left-hander did deliver the best of those starts Sept. 22 at Comerica Park, where he held the Tigers to one run through seven innings while again being victimized by a lack of offense.
He'll try to cool off a Detroit lineup that's racked up 17 runs and 25 hits over the first two games. J.D. Martinez went 2 for 3 with three RBIs Saturday and put the Tigers ahead with a two-run homer off Sale in the sixth inning.

Sabathia

CC Sabathia has been a rare exception.
He'll try to beat the Baltimore Orioles for the second time in as many tries this season when these division rivals close a three-game series Sunday.
Sabathia entered 2016 as something of an unknown after he went 6-10 with a 4.73 ERA last season and was slowed by a surgically repaired right knee. He wasn't even guaranteed a spot in the rotation before beating out Ivan Nova in spring training.
Behind Masahiro Tanaka, Sabathia (3-4, 2.85 ERA) has been the Yankees' best starter - and few pitchers in all of baseball have been better lately. The veteran left-hander is 2-2 with a 1.04 ERA in his last four starts with 25 strikeouts in 26 innings.
Sabathia limited Toronto to two runs and five hits over six-plus innings in a 4-1 loss Tuesday.
"He pitched a really good game tonight, and again we weren't able to score," manager Joe Girardi said.
Sabathia had a 5.16 ERA during a five-start stretch against Baltimore before fanning six over seven innings of a 7-0 victory at Camden Yards on May 4.

Kazmir

Los Angeles counters with Scott Kazmir, whose last four starts have been a collective improvement from his rough first seven. The left-hander is 2-0 with a 2.73 ERA in that span after going 2-3 with a 5.54 mark.
The success comes as no surprise to manager Dave Roberts.
"He's our No. 2 and he's had a lot of success at this level," Roberts said. "To now be healthy and see the results, he's feeling good, and he gave us a big lift tonight."
Kazmir (4-3, 4.38) limited the Chicago Cubs to a hit in six innings of Tuesday's 5-0 win, though all the scoring came after his exit. He's given up a run and five hits in 12 innings of his last two starts.
"I feel great," Kazmir said. "All my pitches, I was finishing them all night. So I'm just very excited. Going into it, you know you can't make too many mistakes out there (against NL Cy Young winner Jake Arrieta), so this was a big win for us."
The Braves and Milwaukee are the only two teams the veteran hasn't faced in his career, but Nick Markakis is 11 for 26 with two home runs against him.

Rodriguez

Boston's chances to dethrone the Toronto Blue Jays as AL East champions, and the Red Sox left-hander's strong season debut was a good sign that he's ready to contribute.
Rodriguez makes his second start Sunday looking to help the Red Sox win this three-game series against the Blue Jays at Fenway Park.
Rodriguez (1-0, 3.00 ERA) went 10-6 with a 3.85 ERA as a rookie last season and was expected to be a big part of the Boston rotation until he strained his patellar tendon early in spring training.
rehabbing, the 23-year-old made five appearances with Triple-A Pawtucket before coming off the disabled list with a quality start against Baltimore on Tuesday. He allowed two runs in six innings with three strikeouts in a 6-2 victory.
"It was good to be back," Rodriguez told MLB's official website. "Pitched pretty good and I located my pitches pretty good. My changeup was a great key tonight."
He threw 61 of 89 pitches for strikes, didn't issue a walk and got his fastball up into the mid-90s - though manager John Farrell saw room for improvement.
"We've seen better velocity before," Farrell said, "but I thought he stayed away from the middle of the plate for the most part. He threw a lot of strikes, he forced them to swing the bat when he did get into a 3-2 count. He pitched very comfortably."
Rodriguez rejoins a rotation that is getting plenty of help from the lineup with a major league-leading 7.06 run-support average, and Boston's bats emphatically welcomed him back with four homers, including three from Mookie Betts.

9 Lefties on the hill tonight, including two games where Lefties face each other.

Lester-Cubs
Matz-Mets
Niese-Pirates
Happ-Toronto
Duffy-Royals
Morgan-Phillies
Friedrich-Padres
Paxton-Mariners
Ray-D'Backs

Matz vs Niese

Niese (5-2, 4.36 ERA), who compiled a 61-61 record with a 3.93 ERA in eight seasons with the Mets, got his Pirates tenure off to a rocky beginning by posting a 5.94 through his first six starts. He's been sharp of late, though, going 2-0 with a 2.25 ERA over his last four.
The left-hander struck out six while allowing two runs in five innings and not factoring in the outcome of Wednesday's 3-2 loss at Miami.
"I thought he pitched a very good game," manager Clint Hurdle said. "A solid effort."
Niese's first encounter with the Mets comes against a lineup that's been without some of its biggest bats. David Wright and Lucas Duda are on the disabled list with potentially long-term injuries, and Yoenis Cespedes didn't start the final two games of the team's series in Miami due to a sore right hip.
New York (31-25) still put up 12 runs in winning the first two games, but its depleted order was no match for Jose Fernandez in Sunday's finale. The Miami ace matched a career high with 14 strikeouts while yielding four hits in seven innings of a 1-0 win.
"Tough day at the plate," outfielder Michael Conforto said. "It's always going to be tough when you're going up against a guy like him."
Cespedes did pinch-hit Sunday and could be back in the lineup for the opener. The slugger is batting .361 with four homers in 36 at-bats against lefties but is 5 for 29 lifetime at PNC Park.
The Mets may not need much offense if Steven Matz (7-1, 2.60) regains the form he displayed during a seven-start winning streak halted when he was reached for three runs in 5 2/3 innings by the White Sox on Tuesday. The 24-year-old recorded a 1.13 ERA over the streak, working at least six innings and permitting two runs or less in each outing.
Matz still hasn't lost since April 11 and remains unbeaten on the road during his brief career, having amassed a 6-0 record and a 1.82 ERA in eight regular-season starts.
He'll be looking to stop New York's seven-game skid in this series, with the Pirates winning all six 2015 matchups.
Pittsburgh (30-26) is hitting .293 while averaging five runs per game at home, though it's lost seven of nine overall after blowing a late lead in Sunday's 5-4 defeat to the Angels. After Los Angeles scored twice off Gerrit Cole in the seventh inning to pull within 4-3, Albert Pujols hit a two-run homer off Tony Watson in the eighth.

Lester vs Morgan

Lester (6-3, 2.29 ERA) pitched a four-hitter with 10 strikeouts and went the distance for the first time this season in Wednesday's 2-1 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers.
"I really think that might have been the best I've seen Jonny since he's been here," manager Joe Maddon said.
Lester yielded two runs in 6 1/3 innings while fanning seven in a 6-2 victory over Philadelphia on May 27. With just one of those runs earned, the left-hander lowered his career ERA versus the Phillies to 1.71 and got the Cubs (39-16) started on a three-game sweep at Wrigley Field.
Chicago had won 10 of 11 until Sunday's 3-2 defeat to Arizona that was also Jake Arrieta's first loss in 21 decisions.

Adam Morgan (1-4, 7.07), who was the loser in last month's matchup with Lester. Morgan gave up six runs in four-plus innings in that game and yielded another six in six innings in a 7-2 defeat to Washington on Wednesday, dropping to 0-4 with a 9.61 ERA in his last four starts.
Morgan has allowed five homers in his past two outings and gave up a season-high three to Chicago. David Ross hit a three-run shot while Kris Bryant and Jorge Soler had solo homers.
"He's got stuff. There's a lot of guys that have stuff, but in order to be successful, you can't make mistakes. You have to keep the ball down in the zone and hit the corners," Mackanin said. "That's how you become a good major league pitcher. He's got the stuff to do that, the instinct to do it. But this is a result-oriented business, especially here."

Duffy

1-0 3.44 Duffy has made four starts with a 3.86 ERA, and the latest earned him his first victory. The left-hander gave up three runs and seven hits in six innings of Wednesday's 6-3 home win over Tampa Bay, and he's gone deeper into each start than the one before.
He didn't walk anyone and threw 75 pitches as the Royals take a conservative approach.
"I felt like I had another inning in me," Duffy told MLB's official website. "But I appreciate the fact that they are monitoring me closely. We built up this pitch count fast, so good to be careful."
I'm Duffy threw a scoreless inning of relief against the Orioles on April 24 and is 2-1 with a 2.25 ERA in four starts and two relief appearances against them. Adam Jones (1 for 13 with seven strikeouts), Manny Machado (0 for 8 with four strikeouts) and Chris Davis (1 for 8) have all struggled against him.

Happ

Detroit faces another good one in the opener, as J.A. Happ (6-2, 3.06) has produced quality starts in 10 of his 11 assignments, including all six on the road.
Happ has posted a 2.21 ERA over his last three starts, allowing 10 hits in 20 1/3 innings. The 33-year-old held the Yankees to a run over six innings in a no-decision Tuesday, the sixth time this season he's allowed one or less while pitching at least six innings.
"I'm happy with the results," Happ told MLB's official website.
Happ, 1-0 with a 3.05 ERA in four starts at Detroit, tries to follow up Marco Estrada's gem in Sunday's 5-4 victory at Boston. The right-hander had a no-hitter through 7 1/3 innings and permitted two runs over eight-plus against the majors' highest-scoring team, leading Toronto (32-27) to its ninth win in 11 games.
