Florida State 2014: Mission Impossible 2---They Canceled The Sequal

Florida: Forget the Records, its personal

This one is a biggie no matter the records. Both teams could have subpar years, but the measuring stick would still be “Did you beat Florida?” or “Did you beat FSU?”. 2012’s version of the rivalry was a heartbreaker. FSU was up 20-16 in the 4th and then…………. All hell broke loose at Doak. Starting with EJ Manuel getting absolutely rocked & fumbling and Florida going on to score 21 more points. Left a bad taste in the mouth of the Noles. Which brings us to 2013, and much like other past wrongs that were righted in 2013, this version of the Noles checked off another box.

There were some fascinating things about this game:

- The Gators had just lost AT HOME to FCS Georgia Southern. A team that did not complete 1 pass against the Gators!! In fact lowly Ga Southern held the UF offense to less total yards than South Carolina did.

- The Noles were 28 point FAVES IN THE SWAMP!!!! Let that sit for a second, seriously think about that

- Beating the Gators in this game could produce the epic remake of the Florida Chant: “Its great to be a 4 and 8er!!”

Now the actual game as almost as competitive as the Hurricane game, which is to say it wasn’t. Florida wouldn’t score its single lonely TD until the 4th qtr & some of the Noles 1st team D decided to hit the sidelines to disrobe & enjoy the game as fans.

- FSU would rush for more yards than the Gators would pick up total (129 – 115)
- The Seminole defense held the Gators to 1-11 on 3rd down
- The Seminole offense would go 9-15 on 3rd down
- The Gator Offense would run just 49 plays!!!
- Winston had another 300+yd day & 3TDs

And this guy happened………………

Now Kelvin that shit was UNCALLLED FOR!!!! INAPPROPRIATE!!! You were raised better than that!! Its disrespectful to come to anyone’s house piss on their floor, kick their dog, kiss their wife, cuss their kids and sit in their recliner controlling their remote!!

But thank you :D

ACCCG: Duke, It wasnt personal, just had to happen.......

I think this pretty much says all that needs to be said about the game

No slight to Duke, yall had an awesome season and congrats!

All in all FSU again lost a ton of experience & NFL talent, 7 draft choices & 13 players total. Even the backup QB is now the starting QB for the college team with the 2[SUP]nd[/SUP] best odds to win the championship (Alabama). Gone is the DC who coordinated arguably CFB’s top defense last year, the 2[SUP]nd[/SUP] straight year FSU has lost the DC of a Top 5 defense. And after all of that……………………….

They’re BETTER this year!

What you will notice is these are some long, tall, HUGE, fast kids. Its been remarked by people who cover the Noles & Jimbo himself that this is the most impressive class sizewise they may have ever had. Most of these kids are ready to compete at a Florida State level day 1 sizewise. That’s important, because quite a few may be called upon.
A large number of the entire scholarship FSU roster are Frosh or RSFrosh, something like 45%!! This means this team built to compete beyond this season.

You’ll also notice A LOT of DTs, if there is 1 position where FSU is down its DT. Moreso a lack of proven depth at the position than down. But in either case an area of concern after the starters. Several of the DTs will get an opportunity to make the rotation & I get a feeling a couple will.

This class features the future of the FSU offense at RB (Cook), WR (Lane & Rudolph) possibly QB (Cosentino). All 3 uber talented, Rudolph is the more college ready. Lane has a high ceiling at WR, a potential superstar. Dalvin Cook has absolute superstar potential & should figure into the backfield rotation as the season progresses. He has true homerun ability & 10.96 100m speed. Cosentino is the prototype QB, he’s big, has a huge arm & is very smart. Reminds me a lot of transfer Jacob Coker.

Another “trend” of the class was Big Fast LBs. Pugh, Daub & Purifoy. These are premium athletes, I mean they already look like College Sophs & Juniors. They can fly, & come with full force and bad intention. These are the future of the Nole LB core. With what’s in front of them they may not see much of the field this year while they learn, but oh my in 2yrs………..

And finally this class contains a lot of O linemen, HUGE O linemen, LONG O linemen! They have maybe the nation’s best OLine in front of them to learn from. But these guys, especially the JUCOs will be counted on for depth this season. And these guys are physically ready for the task. They’ll need some seasoning & development, but by midseason if any are called on they should be able to hack it.

Jalen Ramsey getting kicked out of practice and knocking Jameis to the ground...

"Ramsey was previously in a scuffle with running back Karlos Williams and later shoved receiver Kermit Whitfield in the back after a play. He also crushed tight end Ryan Izzo during a non-tackling period. The final straw came when Ramsey blitzed off the edge and knocked Williams into the lower legs of the reigning Heisman winner"

That MUST be reigned in! Thanks for putting that up GSRO. Jalen has to save that for live action, & the coaches did the right thing there. Jalen's a monster but cannot put Jameis in harm's way with friendly fire. SMH

Charles Kelly New DC:

Charles Kelly now runs the nation’s #1 defense. I mentioned him earlier in the review/preview. Kelly has worked his way up the ranks to become the DC at FSU. Last year he was the ST/LB coach at FSU, coaching standouts like Telvin Smith, Christian Jones, Terrence Smith & all the highly touted youngsters expected to compete for the starting jobs this year. Previously Kelly led an inseason turnaround of the Georgia Tech defense that improved in every statistical category and went from 2-4 to 7-7. Kelly has coached under current Ole Miss DC Dave Wommack & former NFL asst, college HC/DC & 3-4 guru Al Groh. Taking over for the latter after GT got off to an awful start in 2012.

Kelly has the right pedigree to coach the Nole defense & coaches from the back to the front. A style Jimbo Fisher prefers and just like Jimbo’s previous DCs Stoops & Pruitt. The coaching defense from the back forward is a staple of how Saban wants his defenses as well. Essentially its starting with the secondary then moving the pieces in front of it to act in concert. The thought being to control the air & the space on the field 1st, then to let the big hulking brutes upfront destroy all that remains. Dictating that you will not throw & that your only choice is to try & run against mutant sized men in the box, backed with mutant sized linebackers that run like DBs. Seems to have worked VERY well for LSU, Bama & FSU. You essentially do not move the ball.

Kelly’s scheme & plan will be very similar to Pruitt’s, with the exception being Kelly may be more aggressive with blitzing & more creative with blitzing. He’ll be able to command the Nation’s best secondary, a fleet of 4 & 5 start LBs, Mario Edwards Jr (possibly the biggest and best defensive player in the nation), Eddie Goldman (a potential 1st rd DT), & another fleet of 4 & 5* D linemem. Kelly has all the toys a DC could wish for.

Now for the 2014 Offense, Strengths & Weaknesses

When speaking of the FSU offense you have to start with Winston. Reigning Heisman Trophy winner, Pre Season All American (1st or 2nd team on every list), All ACC, yadda yadda yadda. You’re getting a Winston that’s another year older, wiser & mature (though some may disagree, crablegs anyone?) Winston’s leadership skills were never in question, to see how he inspired teammates as a 1st yr starting RsFrosh was amazing. Seeing him do it now as a RsSoph is even more incredible.

The starting QB in Jimbo Fisher’s scheme must be smart, football smart, athletic, a cannon for an arm, decisive & a coach on the field. Jimbo cant be held responsible for what happens to his QB’s when they reach the NFL, but he gets them there and gets them paid! The last 3yr multi yr starters for Fisher were ALL 1st rd picks & have cashed in with $42milly!! The thing is, the QBs that possess the above traits can pick up Fisher’s offense fairly well in the 1st season & then become DOMINANT in the 2nd. Mind you this aint some Mickey Mouse predetermined system. This is pro-style quarterbacking at an elite College level! The second and subsequent seasons in the Fisher system tends to produce amazing numbers, as the QBs become more well versed in its intricacies. Now let’s imagine that, Jameis Winston with a 2nd yr into Fisher’s system. WOW!

I don’t expect Winston eclipse his numbers from the previous season, 1 because very few in college history have done it & 2 he loses 2 of his starting WRs. I do however expect him to be very close & to may be more impressive as he brings along True Frosh WRs & turns them into stars. The best measure of how valuable a player is, is how much better he makes his teammates. I expect Winston to make his teammates MUCH better.

A problem from last year with Winston was, holding on to the ball too long while searching for deep targets, as well as his elongated release. Both have been addressed this offseason. You’ll see Winston sport a new tighter delivery, with the ball held higher. This will enable him to gain valuable tenths of a second between read, react & throw. With Winston’s already superb anticipation this could be dangerous. Winston also has begun to get rid of the ball sooner and taking the easy 4-5yds keeping the offense moving. This will be key as teams will now tend to drop more people into zones & deeper to play against Winston’s proclivity to search out the deep target & hit them. The new consistency with the shorter high completion passes will place most defenses in a bind. If teams attempt to play nickel and drop to max zones, this opens up the lead draw to Karlos Williams. Something no nickel DB wants to see coming his way. If the defense keeps the LBs in, you’re now asking 1 of them to stay with Nick O’leary, not a great idea.

Winston being able to eat in the short controlled passing game forces poor choices on DCs, to which an offensive mind like Fisher can exploit. This then opens up exciting pages of the playbook and even better downfield targets. Id expect Winston to have another Heisman worthy year this season, but with less TDs & a better comp %. Without the 3rd down king KB on the team expect that Winston leans more heavily on O’leary & Rashaad Green early. As the season progresses, you will see the emergence of Travis Rudolph & Ermon Lane. Who both by the end of the season will enable the offense to be completely unstoppable. There will be nothing any team outside of Tuscaloosa can do with this offense by Novemeber.\
Next: RBs & WRs………….

But BOL nonetheless, I don't see a championship happening this year but they are clearly the class of the ACC again. It'll be interesting to see how Jameis handles all of the media attention he gets

I'm gonna guess he handles it with a big ass smile and a few nonsensical phrases

you can become academically ineligible at FSU?

impressive

apparently lol, but you gotta be 1 idiotic mofo. This ain't Notre Dame or UNC ;)

Florida State sophomore wide receiver Isaiah Jones will not play during the 2014 season after being declared academically ineligible, Jimbo Fisher said Saturday.

Honestly he wasn't projected to start, may have finished with 15 catches. Depth wise may hurt a little, production wise not much at all. And I hear he may be back soon anyways........

Running the table in CFB 1x vs an AQ conf is tough no matter what. Getting in the BCS game with the weak ACC perception over anyone else is another. Making it a no brainer? Mission impossible, doing it 2x with a playoff? Mission Impossible 2.

Its 1 thing to beat everyone on your schedule, it's another to beat them so soundly that the only recourse is they have no competition. Ask Urban about the FSU's schedule, ask Sumlin how fun playing Duke was. FSU? Mehh the train don't stop baby

RBs & Wrs: Youth & Talent

Rating Att Yds TDs Avg
Karlos Williams RB 6'1, 225 Sr. 5 stars 91 730 11 8.0
Ryan Green RB 5'10, 195So. 4 stars 33 163 1 4.9
Fred Stevenson FB 6'1, 230 So. 4 stars 8 33 1 4.1
Mario Pender RB 5'10, 194So. 4 stars
Dalvin Cook RB 5'11, 200Fr. 5 stars

The backfield is led by Karlos Williams, an athletic freak. The 6’1 225 4.4/40 speed Jr came to FSU as a 5 star Safety (#4 player in the nation), but never truly showed the instincts needed to be an elite level Safety. Its been speculated that Jimbo all along wanted to put Karlos on offense. But as has been the case with other recruits under Jimbo, he’s allowed the recruits to play the position the were sold in recruiting & offered them the ability to play a position that may get them closer to their NFL dreams if it didn’t work out. James Wilder Jr, Cam Erving & a couple others have made the position switch and been successful.

Williams though is SPECIAL! He’s got the power of a big bruising back & the speed of a small scatback. He doesn’t however have a lot of short area quickness. Meaning you wont see much juke in the hole stuff with Williams. He’ll press the hole, make the 1cut, lower his shoulder & if clear from there will sprint a LONG WAY. If I had to make a CFB comparison he’s a lot like Todd Gurley to me, just a big strong fast powerful back. But whereas Gurley has 387 carries & counting and injuries on his odometer, Los has just 91 career carries & no injury history to speak of (hoping I didn’t jinx him).

Its important that Williams be able to carry the early heavy load for the RBs, as everyone else is a Frosh or Soph. But using Jimbo’s history of spreading out the carries I don’t expect Los to carry more than 180att this year, basically 12.8att/gm if the Noles play 14 games. But if he keeps his per carry avg anywhere near what it is (8.0, I know VERY unlikely, but 6.0 is VERY LIKELY!), Williams may very well crack 1,000yd mark by season’s end. The problem is with FSU expected to be in many a blowout, Williams wont get many 2nd half carries, so I don’t expect him to crack 1k. Expect Williams to be leaned on early on as Jimbo works the other young backs into the gameplan, Williams must show he can catch out of the backfield as that will be an emphasis this season. His game experience as pass blocker is crucial too. Overall I expect by season’s end he will be on many All America lists & may crack the 1st rd of the draft. You just don’t find many 6’1 225lb 4.4/40 running backs with less than 300att on their odometers.

Ryan Green & Mario Pender:

Its rather rare in today’s football to have two 4* top 50 overall Soph RBs that are “under the radar”, but FSU has em. Green & Pender are both small quick sturdy backs in the Chris Thompson/Devonta Freeman mold. Both about 5’10 195 & 4.4/40, powerful enough to bull through the line, but cat quick enough to bounce & GO!! For various reasons both have seen little game experience (In Pender’s case a bunch of maturing was needed). But they weren’t going to see many carries over Chris Thompson, JWJ, Devonta Freeman & Los anyways. So what FSU has is 2 backup RBs that would start for almost any team in the nation save for maybe 15. And I expect them to be GOOD this year. Green & Pender offer the quickness that Williams doesn’t, as they get integrated into the offense they will be dangerous weapons. Put them in space & 1 missed tackle will mean a TD. No defense wants to see 2 hyperfast cat quick RBs after having to deal with Williams for 2 quarters, a tired defense vs these guys will result in eyepopping per carry avgs & highlight film runs. I’d expect both to be in the 65-80att range this year.

Dalvin Cook: OMG Becky Look at this Back!

Quite simply, unless something awful happens to this kid, he will be the best RB in America in 2yrs. Yes Im saying it, and you can attribute it to my being a fan and I wouldn’t blame you. But almost every respected name in CFB analysis thinks the same. Cook is SPECIAL in a way that is rare. Again Jimbo recruits to a profile, 6’ 200 4.4/40 and this guy will be the best yet of that profile. Id just suggest watching his HS highlight tape, or some of his FSU practice tape. He combines what Los brings & what Green/Pender bring into 1 guy. Some kids look great in HS highlight film because they are playing against future rental car salesmen. Cook looked great playing against guys that are starting as freshman on every top 25 team in America (save for Midwestern Schools outside of Mich/MSt/tOSU). Yes the Miami area HS teams are loaded with D1 superstars & he shitted on ALL OF THEM! I mean the sat down, dropped trow, then proceeded to drop bombs on everybody, every game!

Cook will be slowly worked in to the fold this season barring injury, but by seasons end I expect him to be the #2 option to Williams & getting a good amount of carries. But not enough to make him think going to the pros next season is wise. Expect 40-65 carries & somewhere around 450-500yds 6TDs and a couple “OMG Becky Look at this Back!” type of runs.

In summation the RB group is oozing with talent, there may only be 3 or 4 comparable groups (Bama of course & Georgia come to mind). But while they are long on talent, they are short on experience, there’s 124 carries CONBINED between these guys. So I will expect some mistakes, fumbles, pass pro errors, all of that shit. But I also expect some amazing shit that makes those mistakes more than forgivable. With the loss of KB & Kenny Shaw at the WR position the RBs will be called on a lot to replace the production & take pressure off Jameis. This is the moneyball theory, the Noles don’t have to go & Get another KB, they just must replace his production by using the pieces in a different way. Tha way will be the FSU running game. It will be awesome behind possibly the nation’s best Offensive line. At a certain point I think people are going to start saying, this isn’t fair, and they are playing with the cheat code. This team really is that loaded. Oh yeah, guess what? The top 2 RBs of the 2015 class are coming to Tally too, lol.

Good point, Fournette is absolutely #1. Once every 10yrs back & coincidentally will be draft eligible 10trs after AP was.

Oh shit, how did I get on the fade list :( fuck!! Lol

Well played haha, ur username isn't SHALK or Schrute though ;) Nah u know I like ur thoughts, always lookin in ur topic each week to see what u like. Not here to fade u, unless one week u make 10 1 unit plays an 1 20 unit play. ;)

:enraged::mooned::enraged:

WRs & TEs: Rashaad Greene, Nick O’Leary, some vets & the Future……….

Did you know Rashaad Greene can become the school’s All-time leading Receiver? A school that boasts Fred Biletnikoff who the award for Nation’s best WR was named after. And lets not forget Ron Sellars either. Welp, Greene has a shot to be tops All Time! He most certainly barring injury will have the career mark for receptions as he is just 40 away. The yardage mark will be a close call, he needs 1133. About 81yds/gm. But with FSU predicted to be in many blowouts & him expected to be constantly double teamed this could prove be one of those end of the year “do we put him back in for the record” deals. The TD mark (32) held by Peter Warrick may be difficult to attain too. Of all 3 I think this is less likely. Greene needs 10 more TDs which isn’t unreasonable in 14gms. But the problem is in the RZ I think a lot of the work will go through O’Leary, the TEs & the RBs & the other WRs. Meaning Greene will have to do his scoring from 20+yds away. Tall task when he’ll certainly have a safety over top almost every play.

Either way Greene will be the leader of this unit once again. An excellent route runner, with great quickness & good hands. Greene has started all 4yrs, and understands the Fisher system WELL. Its an advantage to have what really is a coach on the field at the WR position. You can almost always count on that guy being in the correct spot. Its even better when that guy isn’t just study hard but is average athletically type. Greene is extremely talented and will be the #1 receiving threat opposing teams seek to limit.

Teams will roll coverages towards Greene & provide favorable matchups to the other WRs & TEs. This essentially leaves the defense playing 9 on 10 vs the rest of the team. Highly advantageous in the run game, this is hat on hat everyone is accounted for. It places secondary’s in a bind vs O’Leary. In order to account for the hat on hat look in the run game in a 11 personnel look they gotta leave a backer in. That backer is now 1 on 1 with O’leary & no safety help if he’s aligned to Greene’s side. On the opposite you’ll see the defense threatened by combining flow away from the strength, PA to capture the backside LBs eyes & making the backside defenders read/decision guys. Cant make false steps as the NB or the Mike on a read/decision when you’re getting essentially 1 on1 to the backside. Greene causes this.

Christian Green & Jared Haggins: The “Other Guys”

Christian Green was a very high 4* & 33rd best player in the nation in 2010. He had a good RsFr year & with Rashaad Green’s breakout Frosh year was thought to be apart of a future FSU pass receiving duo. But has had the awful luck of being on a team that had a Kenny Shaw, a Kelvin Benjamin & a Rodney Smith. There’s but just 1 ball to go around & he’s been the odd man out each time. He’s a big strong (6’2 204) reliable SR though. And after waiting his turn gets his shot to start. Its good to have a veteran SR out there especially early, knowing where to be is an asset to team. I expect Green to start for most of the 1st 1/3 of the season until eventually being uprooted by Travis Rudolph. That’s not any knock on Green, but more of a credit to how college ready & good Rudolph is.

Jared Haggins is a gritty tough RsSr who has had the injury bug. Every time the team thinks he’s ready to go out and produce some injury comes along and dousing those flames. He’s certainly talented enough, that’s never been the question. The body though has been. He gets his shot this year, & would be good to see him produce. But my opinion is he’ll be the 1st of he & Green to slip down the depth chart. Haggins provides good SR leadership though & someone Winston can count on to be where he should be.

CFB’s Fastest Man Kermit Whitfield & Jesus Wilson:

If you didn’t know Kermit Whitfield before the MNC game, you knew him after. He’s CFB’s fastest player unless Im missing someone.

He has world class track speed (4.3/40 10.15 100m) is the cousin of CFB’s former fastest player & FSU player Marvin Bracy (left team LY to turn pro in Track), and did I mention he’s fast? At his size (5’7 183), Whitfield should be thought of like a Tayvon Austin type. Just a small quick as all getout speed burner. He wont be called don to run precise intricate patterns (at least not yet), but he will be called to be the “constraint” guy against the defense. Meaning when defense’s wanna get cute and overplay their hand, Kermit will be sent on bubbles & crossers vs mismatched defenders in 1 on 1 situations (remember what I said about Greene earlier?). You got your 4thor 5th DB or your nickel LB chasing CFB’s fastest man in a 1 on 1 situation? Good night Irene!! 6yd completions turn into 65yd touchdowns that way.

Whitfield still needs to learn the nuances of the position to be considered in the Tayvon Austin class, but he has the tools & is just a soph. Expect to see him also on running plays, again to take advantage of personnel mismatches.

Jesus “Bobo” Wilson is sort of a fan fave. He’s again built in the Tayvon Austin mold (5’9 177), 4.4/40. HE’s a carbon copy of Kermit but just a lil slower. He’ll be used the same as Kermit as well in the slot. Bobo showed some immaturity this year being involved in a misdemeanor petty theft (took someone’s scooter). But he’s a fun kid & talented.

3 REALLY big Frosh that are just Bananas……….

In last year’s recruiting cycle when talking of WR’s the 3 names everybody knew & mentioned were Malachi Dupree, Speedy Noil & Ermon Lane. Lane is a 6’3 206 4.5/40 WR, built in the T.O. mold of big strong fast WR. Explosive of the line, a monster in contested catches, physically as hell & elusive with the ball. Lane’s main negative is he must run more precise routes in college. What passed for ok in HS will leave you covered in College. But make no mistake Lane will be a force this season, and by year’s end will be playing a LOT! He’s tomorrow’s future superstar, has 1st rd pick written all over him.

Travis Rudolph, flew under the radar in last year’s recruiting cycle, climbing form a high 3* to eventually a 5* once FSU (Free Scouting University to lazy programs who chase whoever FSU peeks at) got on him. Rudolph chose FSU over Bama & the Gators. Rudolph is ready to start today. He had offseason foot surgery that’s held him back, hence why he isn’t starting over Christian Green now. But this dude is ready & recovered! And he’s running routes at a college soph/Jr level. The guy is really polished, think Isaac Bruce but bigger. No rounded off routes here, its plant, cut, GO!. He creates separation not through speed ( though he is 4.5/40), but through precise route running.

Rudolph will be the 1st of the 2 Fros to see significant playing time & should be elevated to starter by November. At 6’2 184 Rudolph aint a small dude, he provides immediate physical mismatches against the 5’10 180 CB.

The Golden Bear’s Golden Grandchild…………

Nick O’Leary, stay your ass off of Two Wheeled machines!!! Just leave em alone okay? Nick O’Leary for the last 3yrs has been referred to as “Jack Nicklaus’s grandson”, last year he earned the right to not need a qualifier anymore. He’s Nick O’Leary! And in Jimbo’s offense the guy that’s most important outside of the QB is the TE. He’s where the tone is set. O’Leary is 6’3 247. That’s a solidly built boy! He aint Jimmy Graham size, he’s Jordan Reed sized but a MUCH better blocker. All the fantasy nerds know who Jordan Reed is, well Nick is just as good. This should be a standout season for O’Leary, he’ll be counted on to be big on 3rd downs & in the RZ due to the double teams Rashaad Greene will face. He’s already the school’s all time best TE, and an absolute matchup nightmare. Being a good blocker is a big bonus, because now the team does not have to tip its hand regarding run/pass when he’s in or by his alignment. Defense’s will have to guess with personnel & then O’Leary can be flexed out to further disrupt the defensive look/adjustment. Jon Gruden likes to call move TEs like this Jokers, because they are the wildcard. O’Leary is just that, though they don’t use him as an H-Back he serves many of the same roles. Id expect this season with the return of Kevin Haplea at TE, the introduction of big Mavin Saunders, Jeremy Kerr & Ryan Izzo, that the Noles use O’Leary all over the place. Using that move tight end mantra to dictate matchups. He’ll be flexed, inline, motioned, in the backfield etc. He’ll be put on display this season.

The OLine, an All American, 2 1st tm ALL ACC’s, 114 starts and MASSIVE!

At an avg of 6’4 & 316.5lbs with a combined 114 starts under their belt this may be CFB’s best OLine group. Though I LOVE LSU’s OLine & Stanford and aTm have premium groups as well. But this is the best group in college. Every one of them will become NFL players.

- Cam Erving expected to be 2nd Rd draft choice
- Josue Matias expected to become 2nd Rd draft choice
- Tre Jackson expected to become 2-3rd Rd draft choice
- Bobby Hart expected to become 6-7th Rd draft choice
- Austin Barron expected to become 7th Rd draft choice

Cam Erving (6’6 302) 28 career starts, began as 3* DT and became a potential 1st Rd OT at FSU.

Bobby Hart (6’4 318) 23 career starts, Big agile SR RT and just now turning 20!!!! Came to FSU as a 16yo Frosh & STARTED the final 9gms as a True Frosh 17yo. Not as highly touted with the accolades as some of the others, but is a terrific run blocker and has great feet in his pass sets. Again he’s only just turned 20yo. Just beginning to fill into the man he will become at the next level.

Austin Barron (6’3 292) 31 career appearances. SR Veteran Center that rounds out this talented bunch
2014 Rimington Trophy Candidate

The story here is that 4 of these 5 (excluding Erving) were the 4 Frosh that were called upon to start vs ND in the 2011 Champs Sports Bowl. Those kids were whipped BAD in the 1st half. But in that 2nd half those 4 young men grew up and took o ver the game against a burgeoning ND Defensive group that include Manti Te’o, Louis Nix, Stephon Tuitt, Aaron Lynch & Darius Fleming. From that rough start this core group emerges in 2014 as National Champions, with all the accolades & primed to be 1 of if not the best OLines in college. This unit was remarkably healthy/lucky depending on how you choose to see it last year. That was important because the OLine depth last probably could not have sustained more than 1 injury, the depth was that bad. This year through JCs & and a mammoth sized bunch of Frosh recruits the depth is much better and this unit would be in far better shape than last year should they see any injuries.

They should keep Winston upright and provide plenty of room for the backs to get untracked. With what should be more of an emphasis on the ground game this season, this unit should really shine.

The LBs: Young & Highly Touted, but no real experience………….

Terrance Smith JR is the leader here, at 6’4 228. HE’s not built like most backers. The height of a DE & the weight of a Safety. He reminds me of a Big WR like Calvin Johnson or Brandon Marshall, but on defense & in the middle! Oh yeah he’s a 4.6 40 guy too…….. So that means he can stay on the field ALL 3 downs, play the middle like a big safety and run like a Big WR. Awesome advantage to have in the passing game. The ability to do this is because of the mass up front on the DL. FSU is able to put Super Safety/ Big WR sized guys at the LB position and let them RUN!!

Because of the spread prevalence, many top teams are moving toward this sort of LB. OU with Eric Striker, UCLA with Myles Jack, Washington with Shaq Thompson. With teams using the Nickel as their base now, it becomes a disadvantage to have a 6ft 250 no neck in the middle. Teams are keying the mike now in reads and that sort of dinosaur is being abused. Having a 3 down LB who can go sideline to sideline, run with receivers & thump with RBs is where CFB is moving. 1 less man to have to sub when facing a HUNH team is crucial. Having the mutant DL in front makes this work.

EJ Levenberry 6’4 237 Soph| The other man in the middle, EJ Levenberry is the mutant version of Smith. A 4.65-4.7 40 guy, Levenberry provides what Smith does in a upsized package. Even sturdier against the run, Levenberry will be the missile that destroys HBacks & fullbacks. This is a big rocked up guy, whereas Smith is long & lithe, Levenberry is built like a cartoon superhero.

Reggie Northrup 6’1 220 Jr | Another Speedy LB (4.6 40), though not as tall as Terrance, Reggie weighs about the same. Like Smith, Northrup is like a big safety that can thump in the middle at LB. Northrup had 46 tackles last year despite never starting. The Junior brings experience to go along with Smith’s experience.

Ukeme Eligwe 6-2 239 Soph| Eligwe before getting injured was expected to be 1st man up in some packages. To be used in sort of the same way Christian Jones was last year, a hybrid LB/DE player. As with the other backers, Eligwe is another 4.6 40 guy. Eligwe should be back by the Clemson game & is sure to provide some speed rush in the lighter defensive packages.

Matthew Thomas 6’3 218 RsFr| The former 5* blue chip bad ass! Thomas is a special LB, a high 4.5/40 guy that absolutely brings the thump with him when he arrives. He could become 1 of those pass rush LBs at the outside that just change games. Powerful enough (even though his frame still hasnt filled all the way out) to get leverage on the outside rush and fast enough to blow right by blockers. Thomas has a hurt ankle to start the season but if things go well, he should make an immediate impact in the 1st month or 2. Just completely changes the dynamics of what FSU would be able to do. You can place him all over the field save for maybe CB &DT

Ro'Derrick Hoskins 6’2 235 RsFr| Hoskins rounds out the non Frosh LBs. Built more like a traditional LB, Hoskins will see the field in certain packages & to give the others a breather. Hoskins provides versatility as he can play both inside and outside. He’s still just a RsFr like Thomas so he’s learning on the job.

I spoke on the Frosh LBs earlier in the preview.

For the most part you’ll only see FSU using 2 LBs schemewise. While called a 3-4 team, FSU is a 4-2-5 team . FSU shows the 3-4 look against 2 back teams, and even then they still only use 2 LBs. The OLBs in the FSU 3-4 are DEs in a 2 point stance. They rarely ever show a 4-3 look or a 3 LB setup. In some crazy situations a 3-3-5 may get tossed in there, but for the most part it’s a base nickel squad until they line up against the 2back teams.

DLine group:

Mario Edwards Jr 6'3 294 Jr | There are very few men walking the earth that can combine the size, speed & agility of MEJ. He's a mammoth sized man that can do standing backflips in FULL PADS & runs a 4.75 40!!. Powerful at the point of attack, MEJ sets the edge and thats that, you will not change that fact. The former #1 recruit in the nation is truly a 1 man wrecking crew. While many care about sack numbers & use that as the only measure of a DE, MEJ's value is broader than that. Could he stand to have more sacks? Absolutely. But this is a man that can play & is asked to play every position along the DLine. From out wide as a 9 technique, to in closer at the 7 or 6 technique, to right there in the middle as a NT. What you're getting from MEJ is dominance over the opposing player. Stick him on a tackle and the offense cannot run there, they must send help there to pass. They speak of shutdown corners, guys who eliminate entire sides of the field passing, well MEJ is a shutdown DE. He shuts down entire portions of the field for running. In the standard 3 man line, the DE isnt asked to be the high sack total guy. He's more of a DT with edge responsibilities. With the exception of JJ Watt & maybe 2 other guys, 34 DEs dont put up big sack numbers. Id put MEJ in the Justin Smith/Sheldon Richardson mold. But with better technique, MEJ has the tools to be a huge sack number guy, so dont dismiss that. IF his role calls for that he can do that. But again the role is more akin to Justin Smith/ Sheldon Richardson as opposed to Muhammed Wilkerson/JJ Watt/Cam Jordan.

That side of the field is effectively shut down when he's on the field, period. SI did a great job scouting him, check it out http://www.si.com/college-football/2014/08/14/mario-edwards-florida-state-seminoles

Eddie Goldman 6'4 320 JR | Goldman was the #10 player of the 2012 cycle. Goldman is different from Jernigan, where as Jernigan was built in the Warren Sapp mold, Goldman is built in the BJ Raji mold. A mammoth sized man that eats single blocking, demands doubles & creates space for the backers. As the fulcrum of the attack Goldman forces OLines to assign 2 guys to him to set the point. When you have MEJ demanding 2 guys as well, that's 4 of the OL 5 on 2 guys, leaving a 1 on 1 for the other DE & Free roaming backers. If you single Goldman he will reestablish the LOS 2yds deep in the backfield. Goldman had a breakout Soph year & now as a Jr is ready to take the next step into elite territory.

Chris Casher 6'4 260 RsSoph | A 4.6/40 guy & #29 player overall in the 2012 class. Casher will play the hybrid DE/LB role that Christian Jones played last year. In limited action in 2013 Casher recorded 25 tackles, 5 tackles for loss, 2 sacks, 1 forced fumble, 1 touchdown. This year in an expanded role he should be ready to increase those numbers and become an everydown guy. I think he may lead the team in sacks this season at somewhere around 10.5. Casher seems to be the guy around anytime Winston gets into his antics, so some maturity questions remain. Casher regarding the squirrel shooting pellet gun incident involving he and Winston had this to say to the USAToday about how the story was framed: “That’s some bullsh*t,” Casher said to AP reporter Brendan Farrington. “They can kiss my ass. And you can quote me on that.” So yes he's a fiery dude with some growing to do. But talented as all getout & should have a fine season opposite MEJ & his double teams.

Nile Lawrence-Stample 6'1 314 RsJR |Not as highly touted as his other linemates coming out of HS, NLS is a big mobile guy. Projected to start at the other tackle opposite Goldman in 4 man lines, NLS will generally be the guy that will get the single blocking. He must win those matchups. 3yrs playing as Jernigan's understudy should have paid off for NLS. He's not expected to produce eyepopping stats, but he will be counted on to be an integral part of the multiple fronts FSU will deploy.

Derrick Nnadi 6-2 303 Frosh | 1 of the top DTs of the 2014 cycle. Nnadi has come in and immediately established himself. Already pushing to take time away from NLS, Nnadi will be a force as a Frosh. Almost everytime Fisher opens his mouth speak about the defense, he gets a glow when mentioning Nnadi. Derrick has definitely impressed Fisher & will see early playing time & often. More closely built to Jernigan, he supplies some of the same tools. Tremendous strength/speed/size combo. Technique is advanced for a Frosh but still not what it will be. Nnadi will be quite the surprise this season & will push NLS for playing time.

silk i hope to avoid the clemson-fsu battle we had a couple years ago, but would you care to talk me off Okie State? I expect they'll give up a ton of points, but will also score plenty and that backdoor is always open getting the hook on 17

...i also like that they've played in Jerry World, not that it's a huge advantage but it's close to Stilly and is an absolute spaceship if you've never been to it before

Great write up but you not gambling this year?

i am! Lol prolly dropping today, stay tuned

Ehh, you're getting the best of it. I see a game that the score doesn't tell the tale. FSU isn't going to produce the same scoring as last year & will give up a lil more. Could very well be 27-10 at half & end up 37-20 | 40-24

And bro we had fun with the Clem game 2012, u became someone I consider a friend :)

Always one of the Best reads to be found anywhere

BOL on the season  :tiphat:

And I hope it Bama/FlaSt in the final game....and U know who I'm pulling for :)

Finishing up.....

The DBs: No Fly Zone

Jalen Ramsey
Ronald Darby
PJ Williams
Tyler Hunter
Nate Andrews

These 5 men comprise of the first line in the No Fly Zone, all of them future NFL draft picks, a couple 1st rd picks, all of them before Rd 4. Sounding like a broken record but, there may be not better unit in the country.

- Darby (5’11 195) is a shutdown corner and runs 4.37/40.

- Opposite him is PJ Williams (6’ 185), runs a 4.38/40 and will probably be drafted higher than Darby!!
- Tyler Hunter, was the Starting safety last year until injured. Perfect centerfielder for the Noles defense & is the eraser in the secondary.

- Nate Andrews who as a True FROSH on the Nat Champion team last year LED the team with 4 ints.

- Jalen Ramsey, The 5 starr of the group, and sure shot NFL high 1st rd pick. Ramsey came in as a 5 star CB, started as a corner. Moved to safety when Hunter was hurt, started at safety. All as a True FROSH!! Only 2 men in the last 30yrs have started at CB as Frosh for FSU. Jalen & Deion. Jalen is the most gifted DB in Tally since Deion, and that says A LOT. A few good ones passed through Tally since 1989.

The depth is bananas too…..

Teams will have an awful time trying to make their money passing on the Noles Secondary. Teams without top flight passing games will see their air attack grounded. Lamarcus Joyner leaves HUGE shoes to fill, but Jalen Ramsey wont miss a beat. Ramsey will play the STAR position and be used much like Joyner was. So expect many disruptive plays by Ramsey, whether near the LOS or deep in coverage.

On the Outside, Darby & Williams matchup with every passing game out there. Heady players whether in Zone or in press, with the recovery speed to turn open into covered. These 2 basically eliminate the outside receivers.

Nate Andrews at the Nickel is really unfair, you’re getting a field corner in the slot. A guy who on most teams would be locked up on #1s outside is now locked up on 3’s & 4’s inside. Just not fair.

Tyler Hunter in the back, like conductor of a great symphony. Roving centerfielder that will make opposing QBs pay for tryin . IF someone should happen to make it past the front 7, Hunter will erase that mistake.

Special Teams:

Ill keep this Simple,
- Roberto Aguayo: GREAT
- Cason Beatty: Possibly the worst Punter for all 128 FBS teams & probably half the FCS teams too.
- Kermit Whitfield, is special and no one in CFB can catch him on Kick Returns
- Whoever returns punts will be A. Fast B. Most likely fielding the punt near the 50

If there really is a weakness on this team it’s the punter. If you watched any of FSU last year & especially the Natty, you saw. Whereas Auburn’s punter may have been the MVP in the 1st half by flipping field, Cason Beatty did what he did all year and that was diddly squat. Auburn started with good field position after almost every punt, no matter where on the field FSU was punting from. Its playing with a handicap. The most consistent explosive play in football is the punt. You should normally net out about 38-40yds each time as an elite team. FSU last year? 34.3!!!!!! Ughh Right there with greats like UNLV & Army. On field position alone over the course of a game it was like giving up 4-5pts a game form just having a shitty punter.

Welp it aint getting any better, Beatty’s back and will continue to gift the other team3+ pts in field position every damn game.

On the good side, Aguayo is the nation’s best kicker and it aint even close. Broke the NCAA record for most pts by a kicker last year and outscored 8 of 14 FSU opponents by himself.

took Karlos Williams to win the Heisman at +3800 fwiw. Hopefully Auburn gets a rematch. Good luck this season.

Now for my predictions:

its hard as hell to go undefeated once, doing it twice is damn near impossible. But I just can't see a team that can beat FSU on the schedule. Maybe the trip to the Ville but doubt it, maybe Clemson but ehhh I don't know, maybe the Notre Dame game but again ehhh.

The playoff increases the difficulty, all 4 teams should be really good. If there's to be a loss it comes there.

So with that said .............

15-0

Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston stood on a table and yelled "fuck her right in the pussy" on campus today, according to a bunch of students who saw him. For the unaware, "Fuck her right in the pussy" was a fake video that turned into a meme, with a few people shouting iton live news broadcasts. It is now dead, because Jameis Winston climbed onto a table and yelled it. College jokes!

oh even i think he shouldn't be suspended because some people claim he did this on twitter. did he likely do it, yes absolutely? Is it a terrible idea coming off of a rape allegation? ohhhh yeah. Was his father right that he needs constant supervision? Apparently

but at the end of the day make him run steps or something

I wonder how many 100s of former players thank God every day that there wasn't social media when they were playing? Jaboo doesn't appear to be the finest gentleman, but nobody really cares. Colleges and nfl have been looking the other way for decades, it's just now more accesible due to technology. Hopefully he grows up. Otherwise, he can sit at the barbershop with Jamarcus Russell and tell folks he can throw it over that mountain

forget the fact that he's a 20 yr old kid and probably lost a bet, but you can't be yelling that kinda stuff when your recent history with the subject at hand is murky at best.

But lol at sportsbooks even thinking jimbo might suspend him

There is a better chance of him being in jail Saturday night than jimbo suspending him for something
