Coaching Carousel 2024-2025

Pretty underwhelming carousel so far...

Is this early list of candidates the worst list ever?
Was discussing this with my mother this evening

It's like the Bad News Bears of open positions and I can't stop enjoying it. Jets, Bears, Cowboys (well not open but you know where I'm going here)

I mean Jacksonville is the sexy position but they don't eve know if they want to be in Florida, London, Germany, maybe Brazil.? Tough to sell FAs on that franchise when they don't even know what they want to be. Good QB and WR1 at least.

I haven't placed Ben in the list yet.

My post was about the rumored interviews.
If he wants to go start something in JAX I guess that could be a thing but they have no identity

The others are just a dog and pony show. NE gets Vrabel, what else is there that would be better than what he turned down last year?

Meanwhile the Patriots will probably set up fake interviews with Ty Law and Vince Wilfork to comply with the bullshit Rooney rule while Vrabel has all but signed his contract.

I dunno man. This is a great fit for Ben Johnson. He's an Atlantic Coast, East Coast guy and Drake Maye along with the Patriots organization is far more desirable than working for Chicago and Caleb Williams. Caleb regressed bad and ended with one of the worst QBR for a rookie in a long time.

But... People need to be prepared for Ben not to go to any of these teams. A job will open soon from a playoff team or he will wait and go to a really good organization with a bunch of job openings next year. This year might not be it.

Lot of people are not thinking of the Lions and Bears being division rivals either. That definitely plays a part. Johnson has loyalty to Detroit. Sure money can change that but Detroit is different now with their culture. Not sure who wants to go head to head with the Lions the next 5-6 years. They are still one of the youngest teams in the NFL.

Yeah after turning down DC last year I have no idea why he'd take a job with the gong show that's out there this season

Right. Obviously the last place I want him to go to is a division rival. I respect him that much. But if that's where his heart is then that's where it is. Next man up mentality in Detroit. Matt Campbell knows what he's doing on offense. He's an offense guy. They'll be fine. People also think Johnson is the sole reason the Lions offense is so good. He's a big part, don't get me wrong. But you're not getting that oline, the accuracy and IQ of Goff, Gibbs, jamo, St. Brown, Laporta anywhere else. Those guys are the cream of the crop in the NFL. Brad Holmes, the GM makes that happen. It's a special breed that's tough to replicate.

Johnson knows he can demand a LOT of money. And the Bears are known to be cheap. Of course you interview with them though with their situation.

Why don't teams go after the Rams OC, Bengals OC, Vikings OC, teams who can fill it up on the scoreboards? Those are the names you go after imo.

Plus, Dallas could open. Jerry Jones is 82 years old and really isn't as involved as he used to be. They'd have everything Ben Johnson would want if Mike walks.

I'm kinda thinking he's overly comfortable being an OC for a very good offensive team. Some dudes are starting to figure out that position doesn't suck.

I'm with @Brewers888 you need a guy with an offense mind nowadays in the NFL. The NFL is all about offense. Look at all the holding, dpis and major advantages these offenses get.

The 85 bears may never happen again. It's all about offense. Go after the high scoring OC's. Shit, why not the BUCS OC Liam. He's a stud with what he's done with Baker and that offense.

He could be. He could just be that kind of guy. He definitely can wait. He's still very young. Only 39. He knows her has his pick of wherever he wants to go the next few years. Why settle for these shit jobs out now?

39 sounds old at this point

I personally think Kliff will be a good pick. Remember he was the "genius" it guy a few years ago and he did not do very good. Maybe the second time around he'll be excellent.

Johnson will be very, very selective. He will demand a shit ton of money. He's got all the leverage in the world and knows it. Meanwhile the Fords will keep bumping his salary up the longer he stays here. He's in a great spot.

Maybe the bears are it. Who knows. They have the cap space. They might have the QB. Solid pieces.

Another factor is does he want to coach in a cold weather city on grass? They are building a new stadium outdoors by the lake i believe. Talk about wind, grass and cold. This is shit people don't think about. He's comfortable in the warm and domes.

Maybe that's why he didn't go to DC?

Well you don't have to sell me on Kliff

It's possible he's the coolest dude to ever coach here

But I do love Gannon. Man since Birdwill let Monte actually be a GM, we are a destination finally. Budda wanted out, now he signed an extension. Lots on offense, need to shore up the DLine but everyone wants to be here which is so new....Trey basically said his contract will come. That's not how this team has ever worked.

@B.A.R. has mentioned this before. John Harbaugh. It he loses this playoffs, that's a job that could open. Great organization and really maybe a team that just needs a change.

Um they are far from firing him. I guess he could just hang it up.

Remember a few years ago when his job was hanging in the balance? That was pretty fun. They are my AFC team and I follow them profusely. He's not losing his job unless he leaves.

Arizona isn't far away again imo.

Maybe not. But if they lose again, when are they going to do it? It's the most underperforming playoff team in the NFL currently along with the Bills. Organizations are going to want results at some point.

They are the 3 seed

I guess I think they are the best team in the AFC but I'm biased. Losing to Buffalo or KC isn't some kind of black mark on Harbaugh. The defense has come together nicely but those are incredible teams they have to go through.

Sure, but you and I know that eventually teams want results. Ravens don't win even when they are favorites like last year.

Remember they are one Lively toe from being the 1 seed

I don't think any team could go though @Buffalo and @KC but rest assured if the somehow make it to KC I will be all about gambling on them in revenge. I mean everything about them is better than KC. At Buffalo is a real challenge though.

I think you're overvaluing Baltimore to a degree. They aren't really a big market team....Harbaugh can coach there the next ten years if he wants to.

Also I just found out we signed Corbin Burnes for 6/210 a couple days ago. Phoenix sports man. No one is on the pulse of anything.

I mean that changes the franchise and no one is remotely talking about it.

I tend to agree with you for this year. Hamilton has been the difference in the position switch. Tucker is a big question mark though. Need kickers in playoffs. Chiefs also have the 13th man in refs. I'd need a +3 or more. Just based on distrust of the chiefs and NFL.

It's just something that popped in @B.A.R. head and I agree with him. Some of these playoffs teams are going to fire their coaches. Not necessarily Baltimore but never know. Andy Reid could drive off into the sunset too. McDermott is going to have a really hot seat of he loses again. That fan base is antsy with him.

Great signing.

I actually trust Tucker in the playoffs

Kinda think he got really bored and need the challenge

That's my thing. Does he even want any of these jobs? He passed last year. Not so sure he wouldn't pass again this year.

John is a great coach.

Sean is Sean.

That 2nd round battle imo, could see the losing coach not with the team next year.

Moreso McDummy @DOUBLEUP4LIFE

Goff’s success is directly linked to Johnson. We’ve seen him without an elite OC. He was a bust with Fisher. Purdy would bagging groceries without Kyle. Same thing here. But Goff is a top guy for Ben’s offense and Purdy is the same for Kyle. Lions would be best to make him the highest paid coach in all of football. Ben doesn’t seem like an alpha, anyway. He should stay and soak it in. Who wants to coach outside in the cold anymore anyway? Best job out there is Patriots with most cap space, a stud QB, and the 4th pick. But that seems like Vrabel’s job.

Everyone wanting offense first here need to realize there are maybe 4-5 guys in the league who are offensive minds succeeding at the head coaching level. And when it fails, it fails badly.

Ben Johnson is possibly the highest potential OC in the last few years. He is clearly the top FA including players and the Bears need to just ask him his number. The reports all say he declined jobs last year because money was not right.

Well he made himself more money than ever with this last season. He can pick a number and a team will pay.

Definition of success? Seems of the 10-15 or so solid, sustained coaches about 75% are offensive

The other, bigger part is good OCs get hired. It is much easier to rotate in a new DC. I agree that a good HC is a good HC but for the Bears they need to prioritize offensive and create stability for Caleb.

All a gamble as shown by only mayyybe a third of HC appear above average but have to swing on potential always. Only way to get your guy for 10 years.

Feels like huge maybes. How often do double digit win coaches get fired?
McDermott losing in first OR second round is a failure imo.

This guy has had the talent to get their yet keeps falling short.

Super Bowl appearance or bust IMO.

John simply has been there forever. They seem to have a playoff issue. I feel like he might be the type to look for a different challenge at some point.

Moreso McDermott in my statement though. HUGE postseason for that guy.
