USC - Utah First Half possessions:
1) USC won the toss, received and scored on opening drive in 1min 44sec keyed by a Caleb Williams 55y run.
1) Utah drove down field to the SC16, but missed a 34y FG.
2) USC made it 14-0 4 minutes later on a drive that saw four plays of 17y or more (Utah was called for defensive holding on the intended receiver on a 3rd-4 incompletion moving the ball from the U04 to the U02 - USC scored next play)
*pivotal possession* 2) Utah converted a 4th-1 at the SC34, then on a flee-flicker threw an INT in the EZ, but SC was called for roughing the passer negating the INT. Utah scored next play. Brock Huard was very upset by the roughing the passer penalty saying "get out of here" "what are we talking about football" "what are we doing here" "Tom Brady even disagrees with that" "I can't for the life of me can't understand these calls" "that's embarrassing" "that's not roughing the passer" "I got hit harder in junior high".
3) USC got a 65y completion and scored two plays later to lead 21-7 just inside of the 2nd Q.
3) Utah 5 plays and punt (drop on 3rd down)
4) USC SOD after an early/unexpected snap when Williams was trying to change the play then throwing deep on 4th-5 from the U38
4) Utah 3-and-out punt
5) USC 5 plays and punt (Williams tried doing one his run around get away plays and was sacked for 20y loss)
5) Utah got a big punt return to start near midfield, hit a deep pass than Rising walked in to make it 21-14 4min left in the half
6) USC only faced got a 30y completion and a 36y completion to convert two 3rd downs and would make it TD...28-14
6) Utah drove 5p 70y scoring TD with :30 left 28-21
7) USC nearly had a big catch to midfield by Mario Williams, but ball was bobbled a bit and was ruled incomplete on replay, USC threw deep again incomplete, the final :08 were killed
end of half
2H Utah was -4 / 35.5 (or live +3 / 84.5)
Second half possessions
1) Utah goes 7p 75y to tie the game on the opening drive of the 3rd Q 28-28
1) USC returned KO to midfield and 3 plays later retook the 35-28 lead
2) Utah converted a 4th-2 on a Rising run who powered through a USC tackler, but RB Bernard fumbled at SC03 (Gentry FF)
2) USC after having a FG near midfield, Williams was sacked on 1st and 3rd downs, SC punted - Addison was injured this drive and would not return
3) Utah this possession saw a penalty on four straight plays - on a Utah 3rd down incomplete pass, SC was flagged again for another roughing the passer call with targeting, they lifted the targeting but kept the roughing the passer and Utah has a first down. Dean Blandino said it should not have been roughing the passer. Next play SC was called for targeting again, replay again lifted the targeting. Utah was called for illegal downfield, but next play USC pushed a WR out of bounds for D PI. SC LB Gentry was injured this drive (ankle) and would not return. Utah would go on to tie 35-35
3) USC completed a 90y drive with a 20y TD pass to go back up 42-35 6min left in the 4th Q
4) Utah would take their time. Converted 3rd down 3x and 4th down once, which was a Rising QB run with just :39 left, they went for 2 and Rising ran it in again - 43-42
4) USC got a big KO return to midfield, but SC held on the KO return. From their own 20, Caleb ran for 15y, but penalty moved SC back to their own 15. Utah was bringing pressure rather than playing safe. SC threw deep but it was incomplete. 3rd-15 now SC again threw deep, but it was INT'd with D PI. This is where they blew a whistle during the run back when they shouldn't have which preserved SC some time while Utah DB was running around and they actually put :05 seconds back on the clock going from :08 to :13. SC false started then threw out to Dye who ran for 15y to SC40. That was second false start this possession (crowd noise). Utah pressured again and Williams had to roll and throw up a prayer as time expired.
USC had a 356-284 1H yard edge (7 possessions or really 6.5 since the final one started with under :30 left to 6 possessions for Utah). Utah had a 301-187 2H yard edge (each team had 4 possessions). Each offense had their way with players open all over the place for both offenses. Utah definitely fed off the crowd and it impacted USC late.
This was the game that Utah TE Dalton Kincaid was targeted 16x, he caught all 16 for 234 yards! Rising passed for 424 and added 60y rushing! Kincaid has been injured a couple times this year, including last week vs CU and did not return. "We expect him to play,” Whittngham said. “It’s not a guarantee but we’ll see what happens.”
