Arkansas has made a head-coaching offer to LSU's Les Miles, the New Orleans Times-Picayune reports, citing a source.
The Razorbacks offered five years, $27.5 million, according to the paper.
"They made a serious offer," a source told the newspaper. "(Athletic director) Joe (Alleva) is meeting with (Miles') agent and the discussion is ongoing."

Miles' agent, George Bass, dismissed the report, telling the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette: "There's nothing like that going on."
Arkansas athletic director Jeff Long announced Saturday the school would not be bringing back John L. Smith.
The former Michigan State and Louisville coach was hired from Weber State in April to replace the fired Bobby Petrino and signed to a 10-month contract. Long says that once a new coach is hired, Smith will be reassigned as a consultant through the end of his deal on Feb. 23, 2013.
SportsByBrooks.com earlier reported the news on its Twitter account.
LSU sports information director Michael Bonnette told the paper that Miles "didn't have anything to say."
LSU beat Arkansas in its final regular-season game on Friday, finishing with double-digit wins for the sixth time in eight seasons under Miles.
Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.

I dont care one way or the other hunt

The story is likely a joke, but if he goes I could care less

Id be more interested in who they hire

He can get kids there, but we also lose some we shouldnt

he has lost us some games. won us a couple

This team SHOULD be ready to beast again next year

lotta BS tho...this story IMO has no legs

The SEC likes to interchange coaches tho....doubt this happens now

If it does, be more fun to see who comes to LSU...that is the story

here you go gar, times pic reporter trying to connect some dots

Another source familiar with the Arkansas coaching search said the original report, which came from a twitter post from the Sports by Brooks website, was "speculation based on Miles and Arkansas Athletic Director Jeff Long having spent eight years together at Michigan."

Long worked in various capacities in the University of Michigan athletic department during Miles' eight-year tenure there.

"We've seen the tweet by Sports by Brooks and we're not going to comment on rumors or bits of information," Bonnette said. "It has been brought to Les' attention and he didn't have anything to say."
Miles' agent, George Bass of Dallas, could not be reached for comment. Tom Murphy of the Arkansas Democrat Gazette tweeted that he spoke to Bass by phone and Bass said, "There's nothing like that going on."
Miles is at the end of his eighth season at LSU and is the school's second-winningest coach with an 85-20 record, including a 10-2 mark thus far. His current LSU contract calls for $3.751 million plus postseason and academic incentives and was last increased in August of 2011.
Here is some background and connective tissue between Miles and Arkansas and why there may be mutual interest:

  • Long began his administrative career at Michigan after he was hired by Bo Schembechler, the man who recruited Miles to play for the Wolverines in the 1970s. Long was on the UM staff after Miles returned to his alma mater as an assistant coach from 1987-94.
  • One of the Razorbacks' most influential and wealthy alumni is Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, who played on Arkansas' 1964 national championship team. Miles was a Cowboys assistant coach from 1998-2000 and he developed a strong bond with the owner.
Strong enough, in fact, that when Miles' father died, Jones offered to send the assistant coach home to Ohio in the owner's private jet. Miles' name came up when Dallas was in the market for a coach in 2003, 2007 and 2010.
One source close to the LSU athletic department said Jones is a major reason the salary has ballooned to the $5.5 million range.

  • Bass is also the agent for TCU Coach Gary Patterson, who was thought to have emerged as the leading candidate for the Arkansas job. When Patterson made it clear he was staying in Fort Worth, the attention switched to Miles through Bass, a source said.

LATEST LES MILES NEWS

The following is a press release from LSU sports information: LSU head football coach Les Miles, who became the second-winningest coach in Tiger football history during the 2012 season, will receive an increase in salary and a contract extension following LSU's bowl appearance this year, it was announced Wednesday by Vice Chancellor and Director of Athletics Joe Alleva.
Details of the contract changes are still in the negotiation process and will be announced at a later date, and are subject to approval of the LSU Board of Supervisors.
"Les Miles is one of the premier coaches in the country and has LSU in contention for championships year in and year out," Alleva said. "Only two coaches in the 119-year history of LSU football have coached as many years at this school and only one has won more games. Les Miles has made a commitment to LSU and LSU is solidifying its commitment to Les Miles."

The 2011 National Coach of the Year, Miles has an eight-year record of 85-20 at LSU going into its 2012 bowl game. He has won .810 percent of his games since coming to Baton Rouge in 2005, the fifth best winning percentage in the history of the SEC, while taking the Tigers to the best eight-year record in school history.
He has led LSU to four top five finishes, two Southeastern Conference titles and the BCS National Championship in 2007. Two years in a row LSU has posted the second best Graduation Success Rate in the SEC, trailing only Vanderbilt.
"The coaching business is a competitive one and it is important to compensate our coach for his accomplishments and his worth," Alleva said. "Les has not received a pay increase since his salary was automatically elevated following our national championship in 2007 and he has continued to keep LSU on the national stage.
"Our intent was to address his contract following this year's bowl game, but speculation about other job opportunities accelerated our process a little," Alleva said. "I think we have accomplished the important step of securing Les Miles as our head coach for the long-term good of the program."
