Baker Mayfield was named starting QB at Oklahoma.
Fans are fired up, but he still has to prove he is the answer and he hasn't done it in a real game at this point.
He was the first walk-on to start his first game as a Freshman at a D-I school at Texas Tech, but he was in and out that year.
He had 12 TDs, 9 picks, but most of his TDs came against the likes of Kansas and SMU and Stephen F Austin, and he threw the picks against the good teams, and was shut out by a sub par Texas team.
The positives are that he was a true freshman then and is a third years sophomore now, has had a lot of practice time since he transferred to OU, so there is some reason for optimism, the coaches like his leadership and confidence, and the players like playing for him. And he has a lot more talent to work with, including one of the best running games in the country, at OU than he ever had at Tech.
Negatives are that he is a small guy--doesn't look like he is even 6 feet tall although they claim he is--was injury prone at Tech, and is playing behind a suspect O-line.
Bottom line: Reserve judgment until he goes into Neyland Stadium in week two against a good SEC defense.
