2015 Offseason News/Notes, Injuries, Suspensions, Etc thread

We’ll start today’s report with some disappointing news on the football front - middle linebacker Clifton Garrett has left LSU and will transfer to another school. Garrett came to LSU as a highly decorated five-star recruit who was expected to contribute immediately, but instead did not record a single tackle in his true freshman season and barely saw the field in this year’s Spring Game. In January of 2014, just before signing with LSU, Garrett had shoulder surgery to repair a torn labrum. Apparently, lingering shoulder issues and trouble acclimating to the Louisiana heat were among the factors at play in keeping the Illinois native from ever living up to expectations at LSU.
Make no mistake about it, losing Garrett is a big blow to LSU’s linebacker depth. The Tigers are now down to eight scholarship linebackers on the roster, including former safety Devin Voorhies and former defensive end Michael Patterson who were moved to linebacker this spring. Of the eight, three are seniors who will be moving on after this season, one is a junior who could decide to leave early after this season (Kendell Beckwith), and two have never played the position before.
Barring injuries, LSU should be fine at linebacker this season, but the Tigers could find themselves very inexperienced at the position when they open the 2016 season at Lambeau Field. As we discussed in depth last February, LSU did not bring in a single linebacker in the 2015 signing class. So far this year, LSU has secured commitments from two players who could fill in at the position - Andre Anthony (DE/LB) and Clifford Chatman (S/LB) – and is in hot pursuit of several elite linebackers including Louisiana’s own Michael Divinity and five-star outside linebacker Keion Joyner of Havelock, NC. Don’t be surprised to see LSU hit the JUCO ranks very hard in pursuit of a 2016 middle linebacker who could step in and contribute right away.

Thursday was not a good day for the LSU football program.

LSU quarterback Anthony Jennings is one of three LSU players that was arrested and booked on Thursday evening, according to The Baton Rouge Advocate. Jennings, defensive lineman Maquedius Bain, and defensive backDwayne Thomas were all booked at a Baton Rouge jail together. Thomas has been charged with unauthorized entry of a dwelling and simple burglary, and Jennings and Bain were charged with unauthorized entry of a dwelling.
It's unclear whether these arrests are related to that of defensive tackle Trey Lealaimatafao, who was also arrested on Thursday and charged with simple battery and simple robbery in connection with a bar fight.
All four players have been suspended indefinitely, so there is a good chance this could end the quarterback competition and give the job to Brandon Harris by default.
Jennings started for the Tigers in 2014 but struggled, completing only 48.9% of his passes and throwing for only 1,611 yards, 11 touchdowns, and seven interceptions. Harris appeared in eight games, going 25-45 for 452 yards, six touchdowns, and two interceptions.

</figure>The LSU football team is making noise on the recruiting trail, but now one current member of the team has the Tigers in the news for all the wrong reasons.
In news first reported by Ross Dellenger at The Advocate, redshirt freshman defensive tackle Trey Lealaimatafao has been arrested by Baton Rouge police and remains in jail as of late Thursday afternoon.
Here is an excerpt from the report:
Lealaimatafao was arrested for simple battery and simple robbery, a felony, on Thursday following a fight in the parking lot of a Baton Rouge bar, according to police booking records. LSU team spokesman Michael Bonnette said Lealaimatafao has been indefinitely suspended from the team. This is Lealaimatafao’s third such off-the-field incident and second arrest in one year in Baton Rouge. Lealaimatafao, a redshirt freshman from Texas, dug through the pockets of an unnamed male victim after the victim had been beaten unconscious by “unknown suspects” in the parking lot of Reggie’s bar on Tuesday, police records show. Lealaimatafao then punched the victim’s girlfriend in the face with a closed fist when she interfered, police records show.
Lealaimatafao continued to dig through the male victim’s pockets after the alleged beating. Three eye witnesses told police that the football player fled the scene when authorities arrived. All three witnesses gave police similar accounts of the incident and identified Lealaimatafao out of a photo lineup.

Agreed...lots of conflicting information out there about Battle right now

He's a guy who it wouldn't surprise me if he was kicked off the team just b/c he has a history of issues with a bad attitude and being lazy. I hope there's nothing to it but where there's smoke, there's fire

Damn...Battle entering supplemental draft as he has a kid on the way. Hyatt, a 5-star freshman will likely take his place. Great get in recruiting but still a True Freshman at OT is never ideal

Bad advice as he would make more in the upstate than he would for any NFL club.

Good point especially with having to go in the supplemental draft...likely major pay cut

He also had major issues going to class and since Clemson blocked a transfer to UNC he had to settle with the NFL

what a piece of work..

Florida State coach Jimbo Fisher indefinitely suspended freshman quarterback De'Andre Johnson on Thursday for an undisclosed violation of team rules.

According to the sources, Johnson was involved in an argument with the woman after she cut in front of him while they were waiting to order drinks at a bar near the FSU campus. Witnesses told police the woman raised her arms and then Johnson grabbed them and punched her in the face.
Johnson, from First Coast High School in Jacksonville, Florida, has not been charged with a crime. Police did not interview Johnson on Wednesday night because he had left the bar. Tallahassee attorney Tim Jansen, who has represented FSU student-athletes in the past, told ESPN.com on Thursday that he was unaware of the incident.
A Tallahassee Police Department spokesman sent a heavily redacted incident report to ESPN.com on Thursday. The incident report redacted the alleged suspect's name and a witness' name. The woman's name was not redacted.
The woman, a 21-year-old FSU student, declined comment when reached by ESPN.com. She was treated by police and security officials at the scene and declined further medical treatment.
Johnson, who enrolled at Florida State in January after graduating early from high school, isn't thought to be one of the main contenders for FSU's starting job this season. Junior Sean Maguire and Notre Dame transfer Everett Golson, who enrolled at Florida State this summer, are believed to be the main contenders to replace 2013 Heisman Trophy winner Jameis Winston, who was the No. 1 pick by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in April's NFL draft.
Winston had his own share of legal issues while at Florida State. He was accused of sexual assault in December 2012, though after a lengthy investigation he was never charged. He currently faces a civil suit in the matter.
In April 2014, Winston was issued a citation after shoplifting crab legs from a Tallahassee grocery store. He was ordered to complete 20 hours of community service and was suspended from playing for the baseball team until he completed the service.
Freshman Deondre Francois of IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida, also joined FSU's quarterback competition this summer. He was ranked the country's No. 3 dual-threat quarterback and No. 42 prospect overall in the ESPN 300.
Johnson, who was named the 2014 Florida Dairy Farmers Mr. Football, was ranked the No. 7 dual-threat quarterback as a senior. He passed for 3,710 yards with 47 touchdowns while running for 398 yards with nine scores, leading First Coast High to a 12-1 record last season. He finished his prep career with 11,697 passing yards, 131 touchdown passes and 23 rushing scores.

And i know in happens at all college campuses for athletes but kid just graduated High School and is in a bar 'ordering drinks'...

Well at least the Tally PD had the decency to redact all the information about the QB while making all information about the accuser public

Is there another school that consistently attracts all this negative pub the way Florida State University's football team does since the 80's?? Not sure there is even a close 2nd?
