Week 8 What Are We Learning

- The NFL tried for a year to review pass interference penalties. Not one call was overturned. You just have to throw enough water bottles on the field for that to happen,
- CPA and I exchanged posts on this site Friday evening wondering if the Horns hype was playing right into Smart's hands. It was and did. I wasn't necessarily surprised by the outcome but I was at how easily Georgia won both LOS.
- Horns have one, maybe two, more losses in them. The Michigan and OU wins are have lost a lot of their shine. The immersion into the new conference is a gradual one, not a sudden / completely successful one.
- Going to be another rough week for DeBoer. Undisciplined football is bad football. 15 penalties. That Kendrick Law PF was devastating late. Tide's earliest 2nd loss since Saban's first year (2007).
- Sucks that Rourke is out indefinitely for IU. That was an ass kicking yesterday and not a fluke. I don't know much about Cignetti but he sold me during his interview right before kick: "We're winning and when you do you get all these fucking people in the stands". Loved it.
- OU is just so bad offensively, dear Lord. Venables is locked in at $51MM through 2029. I don't know what the buyout is but it will come into play, soon.
- No one talks much about Kevin Jennings. He's one of the best players in the country. All you hear now is Miami and Clemson in the ACC but don't count SMU out. It's really good.
- Lincoln Riley has lost 9 of his last 14 and continues to be a fraud.
- It doesn't matter what you think about the coach. Colorado is playing solid football. The defensive improvement has been amazing.
- Gut punches over the weekend: Okie State, Auburn and UCF.

Why do say Texas has more losses coming? They got beat by a very good Georgia team. If someone would have told you that Texas would hold Georgia to 285 total yards, intercept Beck 3 times, you probably thought Texas whooped Georgia. You can't give really good teams short field. I still think Ewers is not completely healthy. A lot of the sacks came from the edge rushers. It seemed he could have stepped up in the pocket to maybe avoid some of that pressure. If Texas defense continues to play like they did, they will be OK. They have 3 road games left, Vandy this weekend, Arkansas & A&M. There is still a lot football to be played, only time will tell.

I think Michigan fans are delusional if they think this coach has even a one percent chance of ever being successful. Since these coaches are being paid like pros they should do the right thing and fire Sherrone before throwing away another season.

He can’t play quarterback

Why should these programs have any patience when a coach is in over his head. We can call this amateur sports ha ha ha all we want but with these coaches getting paid huge money and the players making money you have to treat this like a pro franchise. If that means moving on after one year you do it.

Agree with Sherrone. Was thinking of your Jets defensive coaches rants when I saw Oklahoma getting obliterated. Venebles another lost hire. Never she'd any tears. All these guys are military millionaires. Never have to coach or work again unless they want to

With his garbage offense he will never attract a QB. Unless your name is Harbaugh you can't win that way.

It’s bad. It’s very bad. Doormat of b10 is coming soon. He can’t play QB but he could have recruited a top 200 one. He has 3 QBs who are probably outside the top 500 across all FBS FCS d3…

Milroe's performance yesterday was almost indescribably bad. Since they've kept the stat (2016), Alabama has had 3 instances where we had a QBR under 100:

Jalen Hurts against Clemson in 2016 Natty (true freshman against a generational defense)
Buchner/Simpson against USF in 2023
Milroe yesterday

He was missing WR so bad, and was so reliant on throwing to Ryan Williams, I hope for his sake he is hurt as many have opined. Otherwise it shows such a massive regression that I'm not sure he can play winning football against any team on our schedule, save Mercer.

I was surprised, had bama

Tua in 2018 had a better QBR against Clemson than Hurts did in 2016?

Much better. At least according to cfbstats.com. Hurts had a rating of 88.09, while Tua's was 145.24. Tua obviously had the pick 6, but he moved the ball pretty well between the 20s. Hurts could barely complete a pass and the only reason we had a chance to win at the end was his legs, which I guess doesn't factor into the QB rating number

Most fans are not happy.

Any statements I've made are just what will most likely happen with him. You're not going to see a one and done. This would be HIGHLY atypical of how they operate.

Trust me, the boards are not pleasant. I've mostly been apathetic with this team since the 1Q vs Texas. This is the least I've watched them since late 2014.

Again, I'll get into this more once I start the B1G thread, but Sherrone has absolutely the smallest of help from this staff. Awful staff overall. That doesn't excuse any of his faults -- but I'm just saying he'll need a major overhaul to have even the slightest chance of succeeding.

One thing about Ewers is he usually steps up better and evades IMO.

Nice point here.

I agree on the health.

Didn't have any bets. Probably think im crazy but early when 0 0 I think and that Texas receiver dropped that pass around midfield that would've been a long gain maybe td and then Texas punted. Thought that was just huge play. But way Georgia dominated probably wouldn't have mattered. Still huge momentum swing

Yeah, you never know how things go with an early score.

Georgia needed that win more in the bigger scheme of things -- the bama loss now fully in the rearview mirror..

I expected more points overall - just glad I skipped the over and took Bulldogs TT. Lucky decision.

We very well could see this matchup again.

Over the last 7-8 years we've learned that the 2nd matchup in this conference can be totally different from the first!

I didn't post anything publicly but thought it was a lazy bad hire by Michigan. But in a way they were stuck. Would have been real hard to bypass him. Happens all the time. Hiring is tricky. For every Cigneti and Odom u get a Venebles. Also being a San Diego guy I thought Hoke would kill it at Michigan but we know how that turned out. If they're smart they'll move on now but that probably won't happen. Tough situation for Michigan

Definitely can be construed as lazy.

He was JH heir apparent. That was part of it.

The bigger part is Saban's retirement. Otherwise, DeBoer is possibly in A2.

Many of us said last year we'd rather Sherrone go to a non p5 school first and work on his craft and come back down the line. Great guy, feel bad for him right now.

Knowing that he'll be here next year, I hope he knows that cutting ties with almost all these assistants is a must.

Remember, JH took a lot of guys with him while others had NFL aspirations as well.

We also see how damn good Minter is. The Chargers lead the league in scoring defense at 13.2.

Hoke never had a chance after his first 2 years. Why? No trenches. Especially the OL as Rich Rod rectified very poorly in that department. Like, brutal. I can still see Devin Gardner running for his life all game. Brady did recruit pretty well -- that's why the transition to a great coach was pretty smooth in '15 and '16. Veteran team that was a few Columbus officials away from getting smoked in the playoffs. Hoke simply wasn't much of a GameDay coach.

Interesting. You're obviously about a million more times knowledgeable than me i.e assistants are garbage. There was a big game last he coaches for jh. Think psu. He ran the ball like 20 times in a row. With success. And was universally praised ie old school, tough, etc. But I thought it was bad omen. That's Woody Bo like and kids dont prefer that anymore, especially 5 star qb. So I thought recruiting might go south. Guess we'll see as sounds like he gets 2 years. Interesting on Hoke.

That game is well remembered for all the runs in the 2h.

Two things here --

The gameplan was actually to throw a lot. The start of the game showed them that couldn't happen due to Chop Robinson.

Add in a JJ injury and the game plan took on a life of its own.

As far as the manball Jim preferred, that's a big reason the WR and QB positions are bleak.

Two excellent QBs coming in the next few years. Meantime, they'll need portal next year for sure. Their goal is a top 5 guy.

Sherrone got the number 1 player in the state and the country coming to play QB at LSU.
I like him

I’ve been listening to BAR on Michigan for a long time. Shit I feel like I know the school and program almost like a local.
No way they fire him after year 1.

Didn't remember jj being hurt in that game. Usually I think any new coach deserves 3 if not 4 years. But it can interesting at these blue bloods if get off poorly. I know Portnoy said he'd give $3m in nil for Michigan qb. Lol. So hopefully it gets turned around. Resources certainly there. Yeah I dont think jh did them any favors way he left it. I was in San Diego when he was at USD. Great coach but an asshole imo. Just my opinion.

The one difference now is that with JH gone they might start to play the NIL game in full. Supposedly bigger checks than even Portnoy are being written.

Shall see.

Nothing improves until the staff is gutted. He should do a landmark firing TODAY with the OC and or LB coach.

What needs to be done eventually must be done now. Yeah I get that coaches are usually given at least 3 years to show something but these guys are getting paid millions and millions of dollars to win and when its as obvious as it is in this case move on. Why waste a second season when you know the guy isn't going to win.

wow. Amazing on the $. The colleges should be able to tie them into the school via contract if giving them such sums. Eliminate the threat of the transfer portal. seems too one sided now. Seriously if I was a G5 President i would consider getting rid of sports if this gets too nutty - go University of Chicago. Or form a league of all the schools outside the P4 with different rules and such - if you can swing it legally. The P4 are just a minor pro league now.
