Goodbye to Romance College Football
I have some limited time Sunday, Monday and none Tuesday. So I will get some shorter notes posted, but will not be complete. Feel free to contribute anything you saw, heard or read from the weekend.

ACC

17-10 FSU outgained them 425-315, with 248 rushing. Duke was trailing 3-7 before HT, tried halfback pass, but was INT’d at the F14. It was tied 10-10 at the end of the 3rd. Duke got within range to tie, but their final pass to the EZ was incomplete. Blackman 18-21-197-1-2, Jones 22-35-204-0-0. Akers 15-115, Patrick 18-98. They aren’t calling targeting on O players the same way they do on the D players. After an INT, RB Patrick came up to tackle the Duke player and based on what they call and uphold was a clear target, but after replay he was allowed to stay in the game.

35-17 NCSt trailed for the first time in an ACC game this year when Pitt got out 7-0. Pack took the lead on 93y TD run and 92y punt return both by RB Hines for 14-7 lead. 14-14 HT. The 2nd half was all State as they outgained Pitt by 100y and forced 2 TOs. DiNucci started and was 19-32-170-1-1 (1 lost fumble), a preplanned QB switch they put in Fr Pickett in the 3rd and that didn’t go so well, 5-13-61-0-0 (18 rush y). DiNucci finished up. Whitehead led Pitt in rushing again with just 18y. Finley 14-25-198-1-0.

45-42 BC gets the upset. LV had leads of 14-0 and 21-7, but BC would score the next 28 pts and ultimately turnovers did LV in when it mattered most. A 3rd qrt INT set BC up at the L22 for a 35-21 lead. LV would trail by 14 twice in the 4th, 42-28. After LV rallied to tie 42-42, they fumbled and after the return and some runs BC advanced to L10 with :03 left and nailed the winning FG. BC had missed an earlier FG. BC QBs combined for just 12-28-191-1-1, but ran for 364! Led by Dillion 39-272-4TD (3rd best yardage in BC history). Lamar Jackson 19-39-332-2-1, 22-180-3TD rushing. 625-555 TY edge for LV.

25-24 Miami comes from behind thanks to WR Langham heroics again. He caught the game winner last week and this week he caught a prayer of a pass, which thrown carelessly thrown into double coverage, tipped and caught on 4th-and-10 for 28y to keep the eventual game winning drive alive. GT led 14-3, but Miami made it 14-13 HT. Canes att onside kick to start the 3rd, but it was ret’d for GT TD! It was 24-13 Jackets before Miami scored the final 12 pts, their game winning FG was good with just a few seconds left. Canes got just 1 TD on 5 RZ trips. The game experienced heavy rain. Miami outgained GT 481-281.

20-14 Virginia jumped out 10-0 at HT. NC had just 4 FD and 75y at the break. In the 2nd half NC would take a 14-10 lead. An 81y TD pass got UVA back in front and an early 4th qrt 27y FG extended the lead. UVA got just 1 TD in 4 RZ trips. NC was at V37 with 1m left, but were sacked on 4th down (4th sack of the day). Chazz Surratt DNP and Harris went 7-18-46-0-3int! Fedora said that Surratt could've played, but gave Harris the time based on practice. I guess practice matters more than game performance. Fewest passing yards in 17 years for NC. UVA 40-20 min TOP and 405-257 TY edge.

AAC

28-24 UConn gets the upset. Temple was SOD at the U12, U24 and U42 (hailmary att). Owls also threw a pick-six and another INT set up UConn for 1p 9y TD “drive”. They also kicked a FG from the U4. UConn had some TOs as well and missed a FG, but Temple’s were very costly. Tem 28-15 FD and 473-244 TY edge.

30-27 Memphis hangs on to give Navy first loss. Navy turned it over 5 times! Memphis led by 11, but Memphis turned it over and Navy went 10p 83y with a 2pt to cut it to just 3 late 4th. Navy forced a Memphis punt, but Abey was INT’d to end the game. Abey lost 3 fum and 2 INT, he was 1 of 7 passing. Mem 397-334 TY, Tigers were just 29% on 3rd down, Navy was 50% and 2 of 2 on 4th.

23-10 FIU outgained Wave 438-239. FIU threw an INT on the opening drive in the EZ, but FIU came right back down to lead 7-0. 10-3 HT FIU, then 13-3 and Tulane could never get closer. Banks 5-16-36 passing and just 59 rushing (sacked 3x). FIU WR Owens 6-152. FIU outrushed them 218-203 (5.0-5.1) and 37-23 min TOP edge.

45-17 Tulsa snapped out of their funk and had two 100y rushers (Brewer and Brooks). Houston led 10-0 with total of the game, but Tulsa capitalized for their first score off a Hou INT and long ret for short TD. Tulsa outgained them only 416-404. Tulsa actually only gained 63y on their first 5 drives before the INT and short 3p 1y TD “drive” sparked them. Tulsa would add a second 2p 6y TD “drive” after another INT. A late fumble led to a D TD by Tulsa. Essentially Tulsa got 3 easy TDs off of Houston TOs. Hou was also SOD twice at T32. Tulsa used Skipper as the passing QB, President played, but only ran the ball.

63-21 UCF rolls again. UCF scored TDs on 6 of their first 8 possessions while ECU scored TD on just 2 of their first 8. Knights also scored a D and ST TD. 33-16 FD and 603-347 TY edge for UCF. Milton 21-27-324-2-0. Sirk and Minshew comb’d for just 15-33-160-3-1.

USF struggled to finish drives, settling for 3 FGs and 1 TD to lead 16-3 and then Cincy threw a pick-six on the final play of the first half for a 23-3 HT score. 402-273 TY for Bulls.

All time leading 49er tkler Karrington King was lost with dislocated knee (may end career).

25-23 UAB. It was 22-20 HT, with MT getting ahead with a FG for a 23-22 lead before UAB matched the FG to retake the lead and win. 24-0 Southern Miss had 20-6 FD and 423-147 TY edge. It was just 14-0 HT and through 3 qrt before SM scored final 10 pts. Mike Price says “we were just awful on offense”. Price also said “man at times our defense played wonderful”. UTEP crossed midfield once before their final drive. SM fumbled and SOD in UTEP terr. But UM kept pounding and broke a 59y TD run for a 20-10 lead early 4th. IU got a huge punt ret and was able to score TD to trail by 3 with 3-1/2 left. Their potential game winner of 52y was barely short (Nall tackled for 3y loss 2 plays earlier may’ve been the difference). Ore St also threw an 1st down INT from the C32 to the C11 which was ret’d 43y leading to a CU TD. Montez 14-24-168-2-0 (23 rushing). Lindsay 28-185-2TD (long of 74). 28-27 USC stops a late 2pt attempt to escape. Utah led 21-7 HT and 21-14 through the 3rd qrt. SC took their first lead late in the 4th and after not having any O in the 2nd H Utah would go 11p 75y scoring a TD with :42 left. Whittingham opted to go for 2 and Williams rolled out under pressure and didn't see a wide open Carrington in the back of the EZ. Utah did throw an INT at SC12, but USC fumbled it right back and Utah scored on D to lead 7-0. Utah missed a 1st H FG. SC fum at Ut21 and SOD at Ut33. 30-20 FD, 532-436 TY for Trojans. Darnold 27-50-358-3-0. Williams 16-27-262-1-1 (sacked 4x) Moss 20-141.
