Week 12 in the FCS

There was so much late game craziness this week!

First of all, I'm not sure I can appreciate, I don't know if any of us can appreciate just how massive of an upset occurred today with Mississippi Valley State beating FAMU - at Bragg snapping a 23 game home winning streak for FAMU. And the fact that it was Valley of all teams to do it, the cellar dweller of celler dwellers beats this proud championship program Florida A&M Rattlers. There are some upset people right now in Rattler Nation.

4 OT games

Northern Iowa at YSU - what a crazy game. YSU led 14-0, then UNI led 21-14! 7 lead changes in the 4th Q and OT. YSU won in the bottom of OT1 on a 2pt conversion the week after I said all these teams lost doing it. The last 20 minutes of this game was banannas

Robert Morris - CCSU - might be the wildest game of the day. CCSU led very very briefly early 7-3 then RM ret'd the KO for TD. RM typically led this game by 10-14 pts...until with 7min left CCSU ties on a fum ret TD 24-24. RM gets sacked and fumbles inside their own 20 and CCSU goes up 27-24 1min left. RM goes down and nails a 45 yarder at the gun. First play of OT CCSU runs some kind of flee-flicker and the pass appears to be caught in the EZ for a TD, the CCSU bench is celebrating, but the RB DB stole away the ball for an INT! So now RM can win with any score. 37y FG, as the announcer said "it's straight down the wide left"! The play before that, I'm trying to remember, I think RM just missed on an overthrow of a crossing receiver that would've easily scored the game winning TD, but instead they had to attempt that FG which missed. Top OT2 RM scores, their 2pt attempt is no good. CCSU has to convert a 4th-9 to keep the gamea live, then scores TD and their 2-pt pass gets tipped up in the air where a Devil receiver is able to catch it in the EZ for the 2pt win!

Charleston Southern at Eastern Illinois - oh jeez this one. Ok, I don't know exactly what happened before this, but this is all that matters. EIU is in the bottom of OT1, a FG can win it. They have a high snap go over the holders head, CSU player and the kicker are chasing after the ball near midfield now, CSU player kicks the ball to keep it away from EIU player and he scoops it and scores is and they think they just won the game! But no, because he kicked it there is a penalty on CSU which actually gives EIU a FD and they are able to then make their next FG and win the game!

Austin Peay was a loss waiting to happen in this game. AP led 24-7 HT, but they go 3-and-out on 4 of 5 2H possessions. EKU mounts a 2H comeback and scores TD with :13 left and they kick the xpt to tie the game and go to OT. In OT AP has to kick a FG so of course you know that EKU scored a TD and scored 23 of the final 26 pts to win 30-27

Another loss waiting to happen, Tarleton. Coaches' job is to put their players in position for them to make plays and succeed, and hopefully win the game. Tarleton's coaches failed their players, on the final Tarleton offensive possession, they were gashing ACU down the field, they get to the A05 with a FD. Run 2y loss, Run 2y loss, 3rd and 9 now from the 9, 2min left, they run again! For a 2 yard gain. FG 31-28. There is no way in hell those coaches could've thought their D was going to keep ACU from scoring - well if they did they are dumb. A little more aggressive down there at least pass it one play and try and get the TD. Ok, so now on D. They rush 3. They rush 3 on D vs one of the best QBs in one of the best passing offenses in the country. And down the field ACU goes. Then Tarleton starts getting neverous so they start to blitz. Doesn't work. They finally bring the house, McIvor is ready for it, 24y pass down to the T02. The announcer says "you can not call that blitz vs this QB in this situation". Made 'em pay. ACU scores TD 2 plays later. McIvor was 8 of 9 passing on that game winning drive not counting clock killing spikes. ACU wins the UAC, congratuations. Tarleton's coaches failed them.

So many more late game plays that mattered.

LIU was at the 1 yard line in the final seconds, bad snap, game over

Bucknell led 21-3 at one point. HC takes the lead on a pick-six 4Q, but misses the xpt. Bucknell retook a 38-37 lead. Bucknell has the ball, has to punt and with a minute left, HC makes a 23y FG for the win.

Anyone have Towson? You mad if you did. Towson leads 31-0. Final 31-13. A&T scored a TD with :06 left on 4th down

Furman beats ETSU, no idea how that happened!

Sacred Heart beat Merrimack, see above.

Stony Brook led 30-10 4Q, they lost 30-31!

North Dakota actually led 14-0, but USD slowly turned that ship around and got up 42-21 before UND scored the final 2 TDs, the last of which came with just :23 left to make it a 6 pt final.

Harvard kicked game winning FG as time expired at Penn

Albany led 17-0 HT, they lost 17-20. UA's final 2 possessions ended at the R11 and R19 on a blk'd FG attempt in the final seconds

Drake led 20-13 4Q, they lost 20-29 as Morehead scored TD to tie, then kicked FG to break tie with :14 left then they returned a lateral Drake was doing in for a final TD with :00 left

WCU scored 35 pts in the 2Q, always kind of cool when that happens

Samford beats Chattanooga, WTF!

The Citadel scored 20 unanswered at Wofford to win 30-17

East Texas A&M scored the winning TD with :36 left

Maine scored TD with :02 to cut the final margin from 13 to 6 to impact the total and the spread at some numbers

How about UT Martin failed to score an offensive TD!! They missed a would-be game tying 28y FG with :30 left and then TTU took an intentional safety to kill clock making the final 10-9

Portland State led 3-0 HT at Montana! Griz outscored them 28-14 2H. Anyone see Fife and Hauck get into it on the sideline?

Bethune missed a 54y FG that would've tied with :04 left

SDSU led 41-0, SIU scored the final 10

SFA was once again without Vidlak, but Calzada was doing his best to keep SFA in the game with his INTs. The best one was when he threw one at the S06 in just a 7 pt game, the SFA defender was on his way to a 94y pick-six to tie the game, but some UIW players got near him and his own player bumped into him causing the ball to be fumbled and UIW fell on it!

Some meaningful scores at the end of the Weber - Idaho game. This game was never more than a 7 pt margin and Weber led at various points. Until 2 min left Idaho is up by 6 with a 3rd and 4 - they throw a short pass and receiver weaves through a myriad of defenders down the field on his way to a 74y TD to go up 13. Weber scored a 57y TD :47 left. Mattered for the side, depending on number could;ve mattered for the total

And to cap it off, how about Montana State up 30-8 on UC Davis 4Q. Davis is at the M08 on 4th down, PI in the EZ and Davis scores to make it 30-15 6-1/2 minutes left. Cats are doing what they do, running the ball, killing clock, short pass for a 3rd down conversion. Now they face 4th-2 at the D43 2-1/2 minutes left. They could go for it, probably get it, kill the rest of the clock and the game is over they win 30-15. But they play it safe and punt. All hell breaks loose. Davis gets a 77y pass down to the 4, they score. 30-22. Davis gets a perfect bounce for the onside kick, they recover. Davis goes down and scores again :34 left. Their tying 2pt conversion however was INT'd in the EZ and their second onside kick attempt is recovered by the Cats. Not sure what everyone was on side and total, but it mattered.

Yesterday was crazy to say the least as I benefitted from CSU but then saw the reverse happen with Tarleton. Definitely glad that FAMU line was too high for me to play on as it was cool to see those MVSU kids get a win as they worked hard for it yesterday. Headed to Japan so won't be around the next 2 weeks but looking forward to some great discussions when I return as playoff season will be on the horizon!
