- After the Washington Wizards lost to the San Antonio Spurs for the 15th straight time in November, F Nene harshly called out his teammates. They’ve played better since. “You don’t always want it in a public setting, but that’s part of being a professional team,” coach Randy Wittman said. “That’s always very important in building a team that’s united. It seems like two years ago that happened.”
- Washington last beat San Antonio on Nov. 12, 2005. Wittman doesn’t use it as a motivator. “I want us to be motivated by how we’re playing and what we have to do tonight to go into this game and continue to do what we’re doing. I’m not really big on whether you have a big winning streak against somebody or big losing streak,” Wittman said.
- F Trevor Booker returns after missing Monday’s game for personal reasons.
- Spurs coach Gregg Popovich wasn’t aware of his team’s long winning streak against the Wizards. “I don’t even think about any kind of streak we have against them. The only thing that means is that the percentages are probably with them to do well ,” Popovich said.
- Popovich, who majored in Russian history at Air Force, is a little puzzled why the Winter Olympics are in Sochi “One would wonder with everything going on, why would they put it in a dangerous spot?” Popovich said. “You could almost make the case–Where is it not dangerous in the world?” Popovich doesn’t enjoy figure skating as an Olympic sport. “I can’t stand it when they fall. I feel awful for them. It’s like missing two free throws at the end of a basketball game,” he said.

- The Lakers only have nine players in uniform as point guard Steve Nash (back nerve irritation) and shooting guard Jodie Meeks (right ankle sprain) will not play. Nash returned from a 39-game absence Tuesday in Los Angeles’ 109-99 loss to Minnesota, but is being held out of back-to-back contests as a precautionary measure. Meeks was hurt in the first quarter against the Timberwolves and is expected to miss at least two games. Power forward Jordan Hill (cervical strain) is active and working out on the court at Quicken Loans Arena, but will be a game-time decision.
- Lakers shooting guard Steve Blake (right ear drum rupture) will start despite suffering a significant ear injury in the first half at Minnesota. “You just can’t talk to him on the (right) side, which isn’t a bad thing because I’m not sure he likes to listen to me anyways,” Los Angeles coach Mike D’Antoni quipped. “Not really, though, he’s fine. Steve gives us the toughness that we need, so we’re glad to have him available.”
- The remainder of the Lakers’ lineup is point guard Jordan Farmar, small forward Wesley Johnson, rookie power forward Ryan Kelly, and center Robert Sacre. Farmar has not appeared in a game since tearing his left hamstring on Dec. 31 against Milwaukee, but D’Antoni gave him the nod over Kendall Marshall. “Kendall is going to have to find his rhythm as a backup to Farmar right now,” D’Antoni said.
- The Cavaliers have lost five straight games and are 5-9 since acquiring small forward Luol Deng from the Bulls on Jan. 7. Cleveland’s starters are All-Star point guard Kyrie Irving, shooting guard Jarrett Jack, Deng, power forward Tristan Thompson, and Anderson Varejao. “Every game for us is a must-win if we’re going to attain our goal of making the playoffs,” Cavaliers coach Mike Brown said.
- The Lakers have lost a season-high seven straight games and share the worst record in the Western Conference at 16-32. Los Angeles’ roster stands at 14 after shooting guard Manny Harris‘ second 10-day contract expired earlier in the day. Lakers shooting guard Kobe Bryant (left knee fracture), center Pau Gasol (right groin strain), and small forward Xavier Henry (right knee bruise) remain sidelined.

- Jameer Nelson returns to the Magic starting lineup after missing two games with a sore left knee. Rookie Victor Oladipo, the only Magic player who will have played in all 51 games, will come off the bench.
- Pistons center/forward Josh Harrellson will miss a second straight game due to a sore knee.
- Kyle Singler will get his second start of the season for the Pistons at shooting guard, replacing Kentavious Caldwell-Pope. Detroit coach Maurice Cheeks explained that the move is mostly about Singler’s length (6-foot-8) being used to defend the Magic’s Arron Afflalo. “We’ll see how it plays out, but I’m not stuck on that particular lineup,” Cheeks said.
- Magic center Nik Vucevic did not play at Detroit last week. The result was a Piston rebound advantage of 16 in Detroit’s 103-87 victory. “(Vucevic’s return) does help us a lot, but hopefully we’re not relying on him getting every rebound,” said Magic coach Jacque Vaughn. “It’s going to take a team effort to get boards tonight.”
- The Magic have averaged 109.2 points while going 3-3 in their last six home games. They are winless in their last six road games while averaging 86.7 points, including a season-low 79 at Indiana on Monday night.
- PISTONS LINEUP: Josh Smith, Greg Monroe, Andre Drummond, Singler, Brandon Jennings.
- MAGIC LINEUP: Tobias Harris, Glen Davis, Nik Vucevic, Afflalo, Nelson.

- Celtics forward Gerald Wallace is active and available to play. He had been dealing with a personal issue.
- The Celtics have lost 11 of their last 12 road games and they’ve won just six of 24 on the road.
- Probable starters for the Celtics include Avery Bradley and Rajon Rondo at guard, Brandon Bass and Jeff Green at forward and Jared Sullinger at center.
- The Sixers recalled reserve guard Lorenzo Brown from the Delaware 87ers, their affiliate in the NBA Development League.
- Philadelphia has dropped 11 of the last 13 games at home, including five in a row. It hasn’t lost six consecutive home games since the 1996-97 season. “We don’t feel like we’ve delivered the way we want to the home marketplace,” coach Brett Brown said.
- The Sixers lead the league in turnovers — 17.4 per game. They committed a season high-tying 26 in Monday’s loss at Brooklyn.
