ST. PETERSBURG, FLA. — Ball State tonight will welcome back the ringleader of its offense who helped produce the second-best attack in the Mid-American Conference this season.
What level of effectiveness quarterback Keith Wenning will show after a 5-week layoff remains to be seen, but the Cardinals will welcome whatever he has.
Wenning is slated to start when the Cardinals take on Central Florida at 7:30 in the fifth Beef ‘O’Brady’s Bowl at Tropicana Field.
“I anticipate he’ll start,” Ball State coach Pete Lembo said Thursday. “That doesn’t mean that (backup) Kelly Page won’t play, but if we kicked off at this minute, Keith would start the game.”
Lembo and Page never really expected anything different from Wenning. The junior suffered a fractured bone in his right ankle on Nov. 14 against Ohio. Wenning had surgery the next day and has been on the mend since.
He started doing drills a week ago today and did a little more each day until returning to full practice Tuesday.
“That kid is one of the most competitive people I’ve ever met,” Page said. “He has a drive like no other. He has a competitive nature like I’ve never seen.
“With his injury, he had to get extra treatment, and I think he was in (the trainer’s room) three or four times a day. Other guys see him getting treatment, and they want to get better as well because they see him want to succeed so much. It’s fun to watch him play
football.”
Wenning built strong numbers throughout the season as the Cardinals won nine of 12 games. He became Ball State’s career leader in completions (694) this year while completing 66 percent of his passes for career-bests of 2,878 yards and 22 touchdowns.
But his season was put in jeopardy in the Ohio game as he landed awkwardly while catching a receiver-throwback pass from Jamill Smith.
Wenning said the injury isn’t completely healed. Changing positions with quick movements in the pocket isn’t a problem, but sprinting out of the pocket isn’t as easy for him as it was before the injury.
